Within the British System the first year is called FS1 or Nursery and the second year is called FS2 or Reception. Not all schools start at FS1 (DESS and JAPS for example start at FS2)

Hi Gemm 3210 It's going OK. No I haven't found any quark or low-fat yoghurt yet. I keep looking. Had a hard day today. Nothing I was supposed to eat was appealing. I ended up making a bowl of oat bran porridge. Just needed some comfort food I guess. How are you doing?

Al Waha just behind the ranches are being advertised at 120k for a 4 bed, however I know a friend who negotiated her house there for 95k. Bit of a nightmare to get in and out of but pools up and running, and only a few minutes from the shops at Motor City. You might be able to get to Motor City shops fairly quickly but how on earth do you get home again? Do you have to go all the way round by Global Village, or miles onto the Bab al Shams road before you can do a u turn and then come under the 611?

I have bought oat bran in Spinney's and Park'n'shop. Not sure about the turkey. If you just buy chicken breasts they are low fat. Carrefour are great for 0% fat plain and fruit yoghurts and the 0% fat fromage frais.

You should drag your DH out to the Ranches then. It's easily less than 20 mins from IC (depeneding on where in the Ranches you live) and an easy 20 mins to GC.

Hi I had a friend who did the Umm Suqeim to Green Community trip 2x a day for a year and it nearly killed her. Her children were at the Children's Garden Nursery (before there was one in Jumeirah). I advised her against it in the first place and after a month she said 'why on earth didn't I listen to you'. You will regret it and feel like you are spending your life in the car. When it is hot and the kids are cranky it is ****. There has to be more to life than spending 3 hours a day every day in the car. Really you will be so much better off with 2 cars. You can pick up a second car very cheaply or get DH to use taxis.

What department would she be in? I have a few friends that work there in either Education or TESL. Many people stay there long term because they can be reasonable places to work. A unique opportunity to interact with Emirati's on a daily basis which most of us don't have. I have a few friends who have renewed their contracts so it must be OK.

It can be a hassle getting out of Saheel if you are there at the busy time - not sure what the Savannah gate is like. Once you are onto the perimeter rd you have right of way so that's not a problem.

It depends whether you want educational ones or not. 'My very first app' is a lovely one with Eric Carle pictures that covers colours and animal homes. The Peekaboo range (Farm, Wild, Ocean) is also great. Probably better for your 2 year old.

Just give your 3 months notice now and you wont have to return after the summer. I wouldnt take money that doesnt belong to me, so If you are going to lose any monies then be it. As for anothe Gulf country I would definately not risk it. I think for many schools it has to be a term's notice, so the holidays don't actually count. <em>edited by plum2 on 13/06/2011</em>

Schools generally require staff to give a terms notice for a reason, so that their can plan their staffing accordingly. Wouldn't you be better off coming back in Sept, giving your terms notice and paying for cheap flights every weekend to catch up with your OH?

IMO Jumeirah Islands is not looking as great as it once did. A lot of the greenery is getting a bit overgrown and it doesn't seem as 'tidy' as it used to. Depending on where the villa is and which exit you'd want to take it can take you ages to get in and out. It is a huge development. ETA: a lot of the villas are stunning though. Some have zero privacy around their pools and everyone driving past can see you. <em>edited by plum2 on 13/06/2011</em>

I'm in Saheel at AR and we love it. Close to the back gate, quick access onto the main road and it's an easy school run to DC for us. I think you'd be much better going on to Emirates Rd and then taking the first exit which comes in right to the traffic lights where ASD is. I think you'd then have to turn right and go up and make a u-turn. Not sure where the ASD entrance is. There is a bus service from AR, although your girls are a little young for that yet! All the community pools are lovely. I think eith AR or GCMC would be great places to live with kids.

I think AR is all DU - we certainly are and there was no choice when we moved in 18m ago. There is a community charge annually but I think the owner should pay that. There is no mains gas. All houses have gas botles outside. Yes, you can get an electric cooker wired in fine. Gardeners will probably come knocking on your door, or look on the noticeboards at Le Marche, in the AR shopping centre. There are teenagers in AR who babysit. You do lots on the Wii board. You run on it, and on lots of the other games it measures how many times you do things or how accurate you are. It also weighs you, measures your balance and other stuff like that.

Yes I did ask but didn't expect all the add ons. I was expecting about 2700 but then got hit with another 250 for the consultation, 80 dhs for each x-Ray (3) and then 950 dhs for the filling. Would you not think that the filling was part of the root canal? So total bill was 4140 for what the dentist told me was the easiest and most straightforward root canal - nothing tricky about it. The dentist was already busy with the next patient by the time I got the bill.
