Arabian Ranches is a well established, family friendly housing area which is an easy 10 minute drive to Nord-Anglia. Victory Heights is a similar but newer area also close to Nord- Anglia.

I believe that Horzon have changed the start time for some of the students this year in anticipation of road works and traffic congestion due to the canal project near Safa Park. I seem to remember hearing that they were staggering timings so as to reduce the number of vehicles heading to the school at the same time. They never used to start at 7.20. I agree, it's frightfully early. I'm just glad I'm not a teacher there!

Dr Grimm assessed my son and we were very happy with her. We asked her if we should go back for an annual check and she said no need. Just come if you feel the glasses are no longer working.

I personally regret having a private pool as it adds a lot to your DEWA bill. If you live somewhere like Arabian Ranches you are never far from a clean, chilled/heated community pool. Have a look at the Palmera attached villas. They might suit you and are closer to Jebel Ali than the Villa.

How can children ever learn to feel secure and trust people if those who are most important to them sneak off without saying good bye? I was always taught to say goodbye and tell them you will be back. They will learn that you will return.

Check out the Oman Dive Centre. They have accommodation in Barasti huts right on the beach and a restaurant on site. It's a great spot. I am sure the ShangriLa will also be able to offer diving trips from their hotel if you want more up market accommodation.

Yvettesmom, one more question...sorry. My ex husband is now saying that he will only sign the letter if it stipulates that his son stays out there for a maximum of three years. How often does the visa or sponsorship have to be renewed? (grrr nightmare!!!!) If in a free zone visas are 3 years and not free zone they are 2 years. Isn't it the other way round?

You will often get blisters initially with new shoes, simply because they may rub a different part of your foot from previous shoes. Your skin just needs a chance to toughen up. I always put a plaster over the slightest niggly patch of skin with new shoes. This doesn't mean that the shoes themselves will not be comfortable once your foot has got used to them.

Sorry I don't know how to do links but here is the KHDA School fee framework which explains the ECI. The full document should be on the KHDA website. Educational Cost Index (ECI): This is calculated on a regular basis and is announced by Dubai Statistics Center (DSC). School Fees Framework A working group of representatives from various government departments was formed to agree on the scope and objectives of the framework. The framework was then developed through a consultative process with concerned parties. This involved the collection of information, the analysis of feedback and the employment of a methodology that is in line with government policy development. The team has developed a comprehensive framework which can be applied in general to all private schools that have been operating for more than three years. The framework takes into account the quality of education as assessed by Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) and the educational cost index as calculated by DSC. This framework will be adopted for the coming period from the date of its issuance until any further announcement that renders it null and void. Schools will be eligible to apply for increases to fees according to the table below: The following conditions apply: 1. This framework is applicable to all tuition fees and all fees and costs for services that are provided by the school (for example, buses, uniforms and school books). However, this framework is not applicable for services provided by a third party. 2. New private schools will not have the right to increase tuition fees in the first three years from the date of starting their educational activity; 3. Fees and costs for non-tuition services provided by third parties must be optional for parents and are subject to the supervision and control of other government agencies; 4. Schools should consider all concerns and input received from parents regarding the fee increases. DSIB School Performance Results Percentage Outstanding ECI x 2 Good ECI x 1.5 Acceptable ECI Unsatisfactory ECI

If you are travelling with your partner how would they know that he was not your child's father? Many children travel with a parent who has a different surname to them. I have travelled by myself , with my children (who have a different surname from me) for years, to many different countries and have never once been questioned about permission to travel from their father.

Some schools will offer you a provisional place based on previous school reports and samples of work with the proviso that the offer of a place is subject to the child passing an assessment when they arrive. Alternatively they may let your child sit the assessment in their current school and then for the school to email the papers over. You may not need to go to the expense of another trip over at this point. You would also be able to afford to live in Arabian Ranches or Victory Heights on that budget. These are both communities where lots of expats live that have communal pools and play areas. It maybe easier for your son to meet other children and make friends in these communities rather than in Al Barsha (lovely though those big villas are!). If you are coming over then I suggest you also look at Kings and Safa Community School (both on Umm Suqeim Rd) and Gems Metroploe in Motor City (just behind Spinneys). Best of luck!

With so many new schools opening I am sure you will find a school place for your 8 year old, unless he has any significant learning issues, in which case it is a little more difficult. Where are you thinking of living? Where will your partner be working? Did you apply to any schools while you were here?

Have you tried lemon juice or lime juice sprayed all over? It's toxic free and it works. Skip chemicals please...... They're mostly on the kitchen bench tops. They are marble so I can't spray lemon or lime juice there.

Ok, so as I guessed it's not a very good offer. My main issue though is that I don't drive so I have to be very picky with the location of the nursery as I'm relying on public transport. Jumeirah would for isntance be very difficult in the summer months (and I don't want to have to take a taxi to work!). Will you be sponsored by the Nursery? I thought that you needed two years work experience for them to be able to sponsor you as a teacher.

Have you asked your ABA service provider who they would recommend? Most service providers have good links with some paediatricians. It would be worthwhile finding one who is knowledgeable about the dietary/bowel issues for children on the spectrum.

Hi, This is very useful detail information, I was hoping to visit the nursery for my daughter who is 4 this Wednesday. The nursery sounds good, I took my daughter to Jumeirah International Nursery and enrolled her there for one week while we are waiting to get my residency visa sorted and she already bored in the hotel. I was not quite sure perhaps it's only first day, there are only one teacher and one TA (nanny) with 15 kids maybe too early for me to decide I find your post very useful and thank you. Jedda, after this week most nurseries only have 3 weeks left of the term. Some will then offer summer camps. As your daughter is turning 4 she will be eligible to start school in September. Many here start at 3years.Have a you got a school place sorted yet? If not then you should get on to this ASAP. Best of luck!

You can get low-fat versions though and it is a much healthier fat than double cream isn't it? I don't think you need a lot of it either. edited by plum2 on 01/06/2014

A friend posted a great sounding recipe on FB the other day. Freeze a fresh pieapple cut into chunks. Once frozen put it in the blender and add coconut milk until you get to the required consistency. An amazing low fat alternative to ice-cream apparently.

I did an online research and initially had three nurseries in my list - Dovecote, Little learners and Child's play. LL is feeding for GEM, Child's play - for Kings. I decided that in order to make the process of entering school a bit easier I need a nursery, affiliated with certain school. Child's play is also very nice (pictures, at least) and fees are very reasonable, but Dovecote is a feeding nursery for Repton school, which is IB curriculum school - being an expat in Dubai, we understand that we may move to other place one day and in my understanding if a child is following IB it's going to be easier for him to adjust himself in new school (correct me if I am wrong). I like their timing, the fact that they have "sleep time". My DS is an early bird and his day sleep may start at 11:00. They confirmed that I can stay with him initially until he settles. Understand, that not all nurseries allow this. My DS will be one year and nine month in September and I plan to send them to nursery for 3 days a week only, at least to start with. GEMS also has IB schools in Dubai, but they are popping up here and there almost like MacDonalds and I am not sure that high teaching staff level can be maintained in all branches, when there are so many of them. The latest news also do not add optimism in respect of GEM. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/education/no-grade-10-class-in-dubai-school-1.1339590 Thank you very much for Dawn Ventures - will definitely contact them as soon as we are back to Dubai. Repton is only IB for the final two years of the secondary school. The Primary school is British Curriculum, the senior school does IGCSEs and then IB Diploma.

My nephew went to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, North London and has been under the care of Mr Lehovsky there . www.rnoh.nhs.uk They do have a private and overseas patient unit. You need to look under the adolescent and child section. Copied from the website: RNOH Spinal Deformity Criteria The Spinal Deformity unit at RNOH is the one of the largest in Europe. The unit has a world-renowned reputation for its pioneering work and referrals are received from across the UK and internationally. The RNOH is the pre-eminent scoliosis centre in the UK and in order to maintain and develop the service, referrals need to meet the following acceptance criteria. 1. The patient has been previously been assessed by an orthopaedic consultant in either secondary or tertiary care. 2. Clinical or Radiological diagnosis of scoliosis has been confirmed. 3. Imaging (MRI and X-Ray) has been undertaken in the last 6 months. 4. GP referrals will be triaged on the above criteria. If these criteria have not been met then acceptance of the referral will be at the discretion of the consultant. edited by plum2 on 28/05/2014

I just read about a great new centre opening in Al Quoz next Wednesday. It is a huge indoor trampolining/bounce park. they have a website www.bounce.ae. and a Facebook page. The concept has been brought here from Australia. They have different sessions for different age groups. You need to book on-line. 70-80 dhs an hour. A great way for kids to have fun and get fit! I met with the owner last year. It looks like a fab place to go and I will pop down there at some point :-) Sarahlou she said kids ;) He said it is for all ages including purple rinses! ;-) This could be fun then :) Don't forget to take your teeth out first ;) and stock up on the Tena Lady pads! ;)
