I've just done a passport renewal on line for a NZ passport and it was really easy. You even upload the photo electronically (that was a bit tricky to get it the right size etc) so no more rushing around getting someone to sign the photos. They take phone numbers of your referee so maybe they contact them directly. We shall see. They say 10 working days to process and then return by courier. I'll let you know how long it takes.

Schools are allowed to put students in a different year from their age so I don't know why they are making it hard for you. I presume you have tried the schools near you like Regent, DIA and EIS? The other thing I would suggest is that you apply to one of the new schools opening in September. All new schools need students and are typically less picky at that time. I believe there are KHDA rules about how long students can be out of school so be careful about that. There is a company called K12 that operates out of knowledge village and maybe good for your son in the interim. Good Luck!

Dubai College is an academically selective school that selects students via an exam typically held in January each year. DC hold an open day in the first term when you can be shown round the school by students. They do not go solely on academics I understand and are looking for students that are strong all round (music, sport ,drama etc). DC students typically achieve high exam grades but also have a very full extra curricula programme too. You need to think about A-levels versus IB for the 6th form as they are quite different. edited by plum2 on 02/02/2014

Most, if not all, established British Curriculum Schools have Learning Support Departments. Some offer pull-out support. Others may offer support within the classroom as well. Some schools allow one to one support (shadows) but families usually have to pay extra for this.

Thanks Plum2...if you could send me the poster if possible? take a pic with your iPad then forward to me? Sorry, I have an iPad 1 which doesn't have a camera. Here are the details from the flyer: " Our beloved Finya is missing (Saheel St 3, Villa 45). She is not used to being outside and needs regular medication. She is grey/ beige and a somewhat larger cat. Very friendly yet can be shy with strangers. She does not wear a collar but is microchipped. It is v likely that she is hiding somewhere so please check inside your garden shed, behind the water tank etc. Please don't attempt to catch her but stay with her and call us 050 5099 835 or 050 5099 834 anytime. Reward offered"

The early morning classes suit those that go to work afterwards and I think the gym is only available before school starts. CF do an 8.30am class in Al Quoz which a lot of mums go to after they have done the school run.

Do you have a nit comb? It is a fine toothed comb which you can use after conditioning your hair to get rid of all the lice and eggs. If you have used a treatment shampoo and the nit comb you should be fine. All bedding, towels etc need to have a hot wash. I know exactly how you feel. My head is itching now just writing about it. Good Luck!

Victory Heights Primary School, Bradenton Prep both in Sports City. There is a new Gems school between Motor City and Sports City due to open in September. Heading the other way the new NordAnglia School just off Hessa Street, also due to open in Sept is also close. Foremarke is close to the Miracle Garden off Umm Suqeim Rd. There is a Kings school site on Umm Suqeim Rd too but nothing seems to be happening there. I also saw in 7 days today that Safa School are opening a new campus close to the Miracle Garden too - also due Sept 2014. There are more schools if you head to the Springs/Meadows area like Emirates International, Dubai British School and Dubai International Academy I think. Loads of choice really!

If money is an issue, and really why spend lots if you don't need to, and you are prepared to pack stuff into boxes yourself, then you could move very cheaply with a man and a van. The guys I have used before will dismantle and reassemble furniture if required but other that that you have to do all the packing and unpacking. We moved 10 years worth of accumulated stuff and furniture from a 3 bedroom place for about 1000k. We started about 3pm and did two runs that evening and another run in the morning. Umm Suqeim to AR. Nothing was damaged and the driver brought someone to help him lift the furniture. Let me know if you want his details.

I have used Rebecca Corley twice to cater events for me in the Ranches. She is an amazing cook and everyone always raves about her food. Something a little bit different. Lots of menu options for you to choose from. She will prepare all the food and bring and set it up for you. She can arrange crockery/cutlery glass/table/chair hire if needed and people to serve/clear up if required. 050 714 1094 Highly recommended. She has a FB page 'Cooking in Dubai'

If you are prepared to get boxes and pack small stuff yourself then you could move very cheaply by just getting a man with a truck. I can recommend Mr Sajjad 055 4788128or Mr Taher 050 6549237 Tell them what you want to do and whether you need them to bring a helper. You shouldn't pay more that 150-200dhs an hour and, if you're organised, a couple of hours should do it. As you say, it's a small job and it's not far.

I emailed them today. They are running a workshop for teachers in Dubai on 2-3 February. They also said "Starting in 2014, regular online programmes will be made available to gifted students in Dubai. The first set of programmes will commence in April. We are also planning to offer the Quest competition early in November. "
