Secondly, we went to a beach club on Friday to cheer her up. There were over 200 free sun loungers and these loud brash girls came and sat right next to us. They were drinking and started smoking. My visibly prego friend asked them to stop, saying it made her feel sick as she could smell it as they were less than 6ft away. The girl refused, said she wouldn't move and that she had smoked around pregnant women before with no problem! My mate said "you're women, how can you not understand? I'm having a baby" to which the smoker said "I don't see a baby". Disgusting. Unfortunately there are a lot of people with this attitude here. People can only think about themselves, it's sad, but I see it more and more often. I wish your friend good luck and hope she can enjoy the last months of her pregnancy. Tell her to stay positive, doing some yoga or meditation might help her.

They have a lot of golfing equipment at Sun and Sand in Ibn Battuta Mall, not sure about the personalized part though. What about buying something from the golf where the person plays? Or the Emirates Golf Club? Like a t-shirt, hat, etc.

One month ago when there was a yoga festival it was a big failure. Went for a morning yoga and there was no entrance. There was a fence all over the Amphitheatre because of previous days concert. Someone even went all around the fence and couldn't get in. Wasn't the only one who couldn't find the entrance, later on some people sneak under the fence to get in... was kinda funny&pathetic at the same time. I went away and was really disappointed. Maybe because it was the first session at 8am... don't know. I also couldn't find the entrance the last time and since I read on their e-mails Dubai Internet City Amphitheatre, I thought I was in the wrong place :( Everyone knows it at Media City Amphitheatre, am I right?

We would like to book our summer holiday. I think if I book online flight and hotel seperate, it will work out more expensive ..any tips?? It's usually cheaper if you book it yourself online than if you do it though an agency, the ones operating in Dubai tend to be very overpriced. You can check flights at skyscanner.net and book hotels at agoda.com, to review hotels I always use tripadvisor.com

freelance chef for hire, for boating people.....just an idea! Isnt a a cook and a chef are two very different things? A chef graduated from a culinary school and a cook is someone who might of worked in a kitchen and can cook nice? Technically, yes, there are different thing. Although some cooks cook better than the actual chefs. You'd be surprised to see how many non Italians are cooking behind the close doors of the most famous Italian restaurants in Dubai... So I'm sure he will be able to be a cook or a chef, or whatever he wants to be, after all it's always a land of opportunities for the ones willing.

I don't think he'll be able to get a satisfying job as a cook for a family. He could try working for an Italian restaurant though, there are several here and always looking for new chefs. Since you mentioned he had a restaurant before, maybe he could try starting something of his own also, although that might require a bit of an investment. Or, he could also give cooking classes (I'm sure some of the people in this forum will tell you that's illegal to do so without a license, etc, etc, but it's always an option) Good luck!

What is the problem with a company keeping someone's passport? A passport is a travel document. If you need to travel and your intentions are honorable, then I'm sure your company will give it to you so that you can travel and they trust you to return. I am American and I used to work in Taiwan and my company held my passport. If I needed it, they gave it to me. In this country with so many foreigners, companies and sponsors have a right to protect themselves. And keeping a passport still doesn't necessarily protect you against absconding employees... WOW!!! Really? A passport is your identity and no one should be in possession of it except you. If the office where your passport's kept catches fire or you need to get out in case of an emergency you should always have it with you.

I attended a couple of classes at Real Pilates in Jumeirah - they're pretty good, but that was more than a year ago. I would go regularly if I could but it's a bit far from me, although I heard they have opened up a branch at JLT. The JLT branch's been opened for more than a year now. It's very close to the metro (Dubai Marina station)

You don't have an e-gate card, do you? Because in that case you could leave the country with the e-gate card and use the letter or some kind of document that your embassy can provide you to enter the UK. Wish you all the best and sorry for what you and your family are going through.

Jeeeez, why would you do that to yourself? A pancake with some turkey bacon, and a load of scrambled eggs and melted cheese.....add in a few beef sausages.....oh yes. Why would YOU do that to yourself? All the stuff you mention is so bad for your body! What nonsense; eggs are good for you as is meat... Sorry but a vegan diet is not healthy at all. I've studied a lot before becoming a vegan and it's a very healthy diet. Have you ever thought of all the pesticides, chemicals and hormones that the chicken are fed with? When you eat chicken or eggs, you are also feeding your body with all that rubbish. But, hey, you are free to eat whatever you want and I don't think there's a need to be aggressive towards people that chose to lead a healthier lifestyle. i eat organic chicken and eggs.... have you thought about all the pesticides and gm foods that you eat... and a vegan diet does not contain all the nutrients you need. I'm sorry to disagree with you, but there's a way of eating all the nutrients you need by being vegan. It requires a lot of commitment and dedication, but it's possible. And since I eat organic fruits and veggies and grow a lot of them myself, I almost don't get any pesticides or gm food.

The equivalent of Oxford St. in Madrid will be the Gran Via, so anywhere around there should be fine for your client. In any case, Madrid's not very big and the metro allows you to move around easily.

I'd like to tell you that for your age you should be a bit more respectful. I think you've lived quite enough already to learn basic rules of conducts such as turning off your phone, or at least put it in silent mode while you are at a movie screening. You even picked up the phone several times and had conversations bothering all the rest of us who were trying to watch the movie. Next time, if you are not interested, just leave the place, but don't ruin other people's movie. Thanks Why didn't you tell her in her face yesterday? I did. But she just didn't care. :(

Baros Maldives... It was surreal how beautiful that resort was, and the service was excellent. It only has 2 or 3 restaurants but the food was great. Not good for children but more for a romantic getaway for couples. totally agree with newmom83 - snorkling around the island and dive right outside your room.... Both Baros and Velassaru are owned by Universal Resorts, so you can expect very high standards from both of them.

It is illegal for you to have even started without them having processed a temporary work permit / visa. If there is any spot check it is YOU who is liable as well as the company. They sound super shady - do you have any of your original hours and salary agreement in writing? You should sign contract before you even start and then they are legally bound to stick to this. Sorry to say but you might even end up with no pay for the work you have already done. Walk out now. Are you aware that most of the companies here have people working for them before processing their visas? It might be illegal, but it's a common practice.

DH and I went through the same thing with his family (and mine to some extent). We (well me) would spend ages trogging around town buying individual and unusual gifts for family members and in return they would give us money or gift cards "because we are so difficult to buy for". So a few years ago I took the bull by the horns and announced that we are all adults and it did seem rather pointless giving each other gift cards. I know this is not in the spirit of christmas so I told them all I would make a large charitable donation on their behalf. One year I bought a beehive through "Send a Cow" charity and another year I bought a goat. The premise of Send a Cow is that rather than giving food aid or money to families in Africa, they receive an animal or seeds or tools so that they can grow produce to use and sell the surplus or use the animal for milk, breed from it and sell any offspring thus allowing families to become self-sufficient and even start a small business rather than relying on charity handouts. It didn't go down well at all at first but they all seem to accept it, although my mother does buy us a voucher for something out here - last year a dhow dinner cruise which was lovely but she still doesn't get it! My family doesn't have any children involved but if BIL ever has kids, I would mail them a gift without question - kids don't get the concept of having to wait for a present. I know from past experience though that as they get older, say 10+, they often prefer to receive cold hard cash so that they can go and choose their own gifts. Your families may not like it and take offence or they may just heave a huge sigh of relief. Christmas has become far too commercialised for my liking and is a retail and media driven holiday. The religious significance of christmas (and easter) is slowly being eroded but as my family neither need or want for anything, I feel my money is far better used by those in genuine need. I've never heard of this sites before, they are amazing, I wish more people would know about them, instead of wasting money in useless presents that nobody needs.

I'm an ovo-vegetarian. I eat eggs very rarely and only from free-range sources. For me, I went vegetarian for ethical reasons but it also brought in a lot of health improvements. I must admit that it's hard being vegan in Dubai especially if one is dining out. There is a good number of vegetarian options but getting something that's not drenched in cheese is another story altogether. Sure, I can eat green salad with no dressing wherever I go, but that likely won't fill me up. By the way, my cousin has created a Facebook page for all vegans and vegetarians in the UAE so if any of you ladies happen to be on Facebook, please join it. http://www.facebook.com/UaeVeggies It's supposed to be a support network where members can share recipes, tips and communicate with each other. Also, there are some inspirational photos posted on a daily basis, etc. Thanks! edited by Cheezu on 16/11/2012 Thanks Cheezu, I've joined the group. It seems good for inspiration.

I moved to Dubai 2 months ago with my husband and 2 dogs and my days are pretty dull. I train, walk my dogs, play with them, search for job and meet with consultant and recruitment agents who keep telling me that there are limited opportunities in my area of expertise and I have to be patient and patience isn't one of my qualities. I don't know anybody in this place which makes it even more difficult to adjust and to do things and my DH travels quite a lot with his job but does his best to be home for the weekend. I am finding life here relaxing but also stressful, I was never a woman of leisure and never enjoyed been one so its not going to start now I would like to use my skills and expertise to help others but how to go about it? any help or advise would be much appreciated? Check www.volunteerindubai.com, there are tons of events where you could help out every week. Job searching here takes time and it can be depressing, but it's all a matter of patience.

I sometimes use egg replacer in baking. You don't always need it but it can give a better texture for some things. I get it at Le Marche in Arabian Ranches and the Organic Shop. The brand is Orgran. This is a fabulous website for vegan baking and other things: http://parsleysoup.co.uk/ For dairy free margarine, Nuttelex is available at Spinneys and is great as is Pure from Lulu. I'd advise that you buy soy/rice etc milks that are enriched with calcium etc. Also take a supplement with B12 in it or eat foods enriched with B12 - it's the only vitamin you can't get from food as a vegan. There is a gold mine of nutritional information about being a vegan here: http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/vegan.htm Are you a vegan Daza? Was the transition very hard at the beginning? This is the second time I'm trying to become a vegan since the first time I had to struggle. I come from a place where meat and diary are the base of every meal, and it's already hard to explain to people why I'm vegetarian that I just couldn't cope with being a vegan at the time. I hope I'm luckier now.
