When we moved here split apartments were the only thing available in our budget (2008). We were told that a good way of knowing if a split villa was illegal was if the utilities are included in the rent as it is impossible for the landlord to spilt the meters etc. the municipality are apparently cracking down in these and evicted tenants, usually with no notice period and no chance of getting the rent back etc. I would stick well clear unless the landlord can guarantee its legal. Also I know of a number of my colleagues who are facing major issues getting visas for their families as they live in split villas with no bills directly to them, one has even sent his family home. There are so many legal options available now to not have to risk it, and all issues associated with poorly split villas. Good luck

Within your budget you will also manage to get a 4 or 5 bedroomed villa in Al Reef (5 beds come with there own pool). lovely community which is developed with a shop, pools, gyms, bus route etc - just slightly further out of the city, Only 45 mins to Dubai and 20 minutes to Abu Dhabi city / corniche. I work near BSAK and it takes approx 25 mins to get there in the morning. 15 minutes to Al Yasmina. Good luck with the school hunting edited by Pootle Flump on 04/03/2012

am i the only person worried about the heat situation?! June 3rd will be scorchio!! Eh. She doesn't wear a lot of clothes... I think kelly means about the audience! 20,000 odd people crammed in, in hot, humid conditions. I remember Pink playing in June/July and it was insane! Gulf news quote 43,000 people will be there to see her - ohh its going to sweaty and hot - think of the q's for the beer tent eeekkk 43,000!!! Wow that would be the biggest gig the UAE has ever seen. Too hot for me, I remember seeing Robbie (can't remember when it was April/May?) and I was pretty hot at that one. Shame she probably puts on a good show. Love to see Gaga! Oops , i got it wrong, add another 2,000 people to that beer queue, GN states 45,000. We went to see Snoop Dogg in the same venue at the begining of May and it was too hot then

We used the company below for National Day, it was excellent. There used to a ferry service to LuLu island but they stopped that a few years ago. The only way to get there is to charter a boat. The Destination Village is on the breakwater, near Marina mall - loads going on down there.

We stayed at The Jewel Facing Rockefeller Center Hotel in July. It was excellent, very central location, 1 minute from 5th Avenue shops, right opposite the Rockafeller Center and within walking distance of Cental Park and Times Square. The hotel was a boutique style, very new and clean, small but adequate sized rooms. They had water coolers on each floor with bottles so you could just help yourself and not have to think about getting supplies in. Only downside was the restaurant was in another tower, but as there are so many cafes, bars nearby it wasnt an issue. We thought it was very reasonable for the standard of room / location.

Agreed BM, if we do all end up with three days next weekend, that is a result! Most countries (I think) don't give days in lieu... Yeah! Not everyone will get a three day weekend next week, but could (and should) have had two 2 day (at least) weeekends, sorry but thats my point. Bit like saying Christmas and New Year are close together so you only get the one. I work in Public and was half promised a long, almost week off next week, but thats a seperate issue. I wasnt expecting to get this sunday off, as we were expecting New year to be called for Saturday.

I think it will, they normally announce public first... Good news I think! All that speculation about the 27th and nobody predicted MOVING new year! Does this mean restaurants can operate normally on Saturday? I don't think its good news, I was actually hoping that for this one weekend my DH would at least get a 2 day weekend. Seriously how can they suddenly decide to just move the New Year day off just to fit in with the National Day / Birthday Party Celebration. I would think its a bit like saying christmas day is tomorrow, but we arent giving you the day off until next week.

Yas Arena (which this is) is outdoors, with no AC. The whole area is graveled, so leave the heels at home. Its literally in one of archways of Ferrai World. Yas Forum is indoors and in the big bubble, and is AC'd, which would have been sensible at this time of year.

When i was job hunting, I had quite a few interviews in hotels. Sometimes with agents, who were using it as their base to meet clients as well and candidates. Also for interviews with companies. Had a interview in Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi - it never crossed my mind it would be in a hotel room (especially at those rates), so just ask where the meeting point would be, which was the coffee shop in Reception, no problem. I have also arranged interviews for my current company, and we tend to use meetings rooms in hotels, if its not in our head office city.

Ok so this maybe a dumb question.. but when we were first looking for opportunities in the Middle east, my husband spoke with a friend in Qatar and he told him , if my husband and i worked, the rule in Qatar is that he will be the one who would get the benefits (i.e. pay for school, housing allowance, tickets etc) and I will not, even though I will also work (for a diffrent company) but apprently the rule only applies to men. Does the rule also applies in dubai?? if I get hired here, I wont get benefits? b/c my husband works here.. My other question, WHY THE HECk is there so much discrimination in here... in the US, you will be sued if you put an Ad that says (have to be female, 25-42 yrs old, Western education etc.), next I will see an Ad that says, if you are not good looking then dont bother applying.. What the heck???? I think it because most women move here for their husbands job, and then get a job when here meaning we are classed as Local Hire. Most Local Hire packages tend not to include any benefits other than the basics. Thats how it works for us anyway, DH gets all the allowances and I just get my base salary. I was also shocked, when job hunting, at how adverts are worded. I also found it very strange that you are meant to include a photo on your CV!!!

We are going to be staying in Qasr al Sarab this weekend. We understand that the road leading up to the hotel is unmade, but could anyone who has stayed there please confirm that our saloon car will be able to get there OK? Our 4 x 4 is unexpectedly out of action. I'm assuming it would be, otherwise they'd lose loads of trade, but if anyone can verify this, I'd be grateful! Thanks! The road has now been covered in tarmac, just look out for the sand drifts that take over half the road. I wouldnt recommend doing it in the dark, some of the drops down the dunes look a bit scary. Take your time and enjoy the drive through the dunes. It really is a very very nice hotel

Wild Wadi seems so much more tame than Atlantis. The lazy river at WW is suitable for all ages, while the the one at Atlantis is quite wild. My niece has always enjoyed WW since the age of 3, felt out of her depth / age at Atlantis. Took her Brother to Dreamland as he isnt so happy in water and he loved it there (wouldnt have liked WW or Atl). Suppose it depends on how confident they are in water, on rides etc.

We live in Abu Dhabi and it took us nearly 2 hours, it is a very boring, single lane road. We went for 1 night, but said we would only go again if it was for 2 nights. The hotel is out of this world, the best we have stayed in, we also usually book Al Qasr. The rooms are lovely, we got upgraded to a suite with its own garden etc, I was trying to convince DH to let us live here lol, until he reminded me of the commute time to work :-(. The pool area is perfect and was very quiet when we were there (4 weeks ago). edited by Pootle Flump on 04/08/2011 edited by Pootle Flump on 04/08/2011

A lot of our staff who moved to Dubai (we work in Abu Dhabi) are moving back to Abu Dhabi, as they can't handle the drive any more. The two new towers on Al Reem (Sun and Sky) have been realised and are very reasonable (for Abu Dhabi). I believe the facilities and specs are excellent. There will eventually be a Mall next door to them. At the moment Al Whada Mall is only 3 minutes by Car, but would be walkable in Winter (just). Excellent views and it will be a great location. There are a lot of apartments being realised around the Muroor Area (behind Holiday Inn) which is also a good location for taxis etc. Al Nayan area is also very handy for the city with a lot of nice cafes, restaurants etc, no hotel bars tho :-(. Al Bandar is lovely, but maybe a little isolated if you dont drive, but there is a spinneys, hairdressers etc on site and more shops due soon.

BB2 will be able to precise directions (if she isnt on holiday) but basically its in the Muroor Area in Abu Dhabi now, not Khalifa City A. Take Airport Road (the one with Carrefour on) down into the city, over immigration bridge (19th Saada Street runs under it), take the next turning right into 15th Street, then right again, its in a office along that street towards the end (but its not a police station, more like government office building). If anyone knows where I can get a NOC from Dubai so I can get Abu Dhabi licence, it would be much appreciated. I dont think you can have a licence in both emirates which is why the NOC is needed.

We spent 2 weeks doing that trip a few years ago minus the Grand Canyon - that is little too far away from the rest of the places on your trip IMHO. Kings Canyon is also worth seeing in that area and sacremento. We tended to spend 2 days in each place then move on. We actually camped in most places, apart from the cities, which is a brill experience. We always book everything seperately using websites like expedia. edited by Pootle Flump on 05/07/2011

Hi there, the office is right next to the MOL and Khalifa Park Perfect location. There are loads of compounds around that area. Al Seef is a nice one to look at. Alternatively Muroor Road area is only a short drive away with loads of apartments, new and slightly older. As Khalifa Park is almost off island, it would only take 10-15 mins to get from KCA area. I live in Al Reef and drive past MOL, takes me around 15 minutes to get there.

I went shopping at the weekend and was dissapointed to find that all the shops have started getting their winter stock in already! I find it really frustrating when I need to buy shorts etc and can't get them for 1/2 the year as they seem to think we want woolly jumpers, boots and coats. I would buy as much as you can in the sales. stock up on longer shorts, 3/4 length trousers, Tshirts and vest tops (built up ones, not strappy ones). Oh, and you can never have enough pairs of flipflops (well so I keep telling my DH anyway). You are arriving during Ramadan so more conservative clothing will be needed. If you are planning on working over here, it might be worth bringing a good stock of work wear with you, as I find it difficult to find here. Good luck with the move.

We live in Al Reef and love it, there is a real community spirit around the place. Our facebook page is very active, which is why people hear so much of the problems, but personnaly its no worse than anywhere else in Abu Dhabi for build quality etc. We never hear the airport (3 planes in 12 months!!!). I love that I can park my car right outside my front door and not have to lug shopping through apartments etc. There is a bus service that runs into the city every 20 minutes, and our shops are going to be open before August Inshallah. I love that I can be in the centre of Dubai in a hour, but it still only takes me 20 minutes to get to the Corniche. The hotels on Yas are excellent for restaurants and nights out and only 10 minutes away (20 AED taxi). Wish this had been available when we moved to the UAE 3 years ago. i was coming back from yas yesterday, and whoosing up the road was a stupid idiot in a yellow camero, he was weaving in and out on the main road just dodging cars and squeezing through gaps, i could see him coming so i just moved out of his way. he then proceeded to fly around the r/a and into al reef. so watch out for him! ad does have a problem with build quality as its individuals with shovels, but you would think that certain bigger builders would be better, but nope not always the case. the better builders here are arabtec, you get what you pay for, but of course it doesnt help when some landlords do not help out where they are obliged to like in the rest of the world etc. the first 2 phases are further from the runway so the closer you are when they start to use the new runway properly its bound to become more of an issue. at least they have made a second entrance on to the main road rather than all go through to one exit, thats the prob that kca is having, building too many schools etc there and only really 2 ins...! but then that is also the prob in other places such as mussafah! Lol - I think battling down 30th twice a day prepares me well enough to handle anyone in Al Reef, unfortunately thats the joys of living in the UAE

"Morning Glory" "Burlesque" I realise they sometimes need to check ratings etc and edit for appropriateness... but why even bother releasing these so late!!! Ridiculous!!! :\: I saw Morning Glory here about 5 months ago. I also tend to find films are released here way before the UK

We are doing this in July (without kids though). We fly from Abu Dhabi on Etihad into JFK then AA down to orlando. We usually tend to stay in a suite as it gives you a bit more room and the option to eat in. We have had a villa there before but found it a bit isolated as you had to drive everywhere which limited us going out at night when one of us couldnt have a drink. We are in orlando for 11 nights, then breaking the flight up back by staying in New York for 3 days.

I'm open to living in Abu Dhabi if it's not too expensive. We just don't want to spending all our money on rent. Do you know what areas are cheaper? I think the school places are hard to find there as well though. I rang a couple already....the pearl was one. Would prefer if my hubby didn't have to travel back and forth from Dubai. edited by spudz on 02/06/2011 School places in AD are very hard to find. You could try BISAD (The British International School, Abu Dhabi) or Brighton College. The cheapest place to live is off island. Al Reef have 3 bed villas for 120k. KCA, KCB and MBZ are all off island and have a lot of small compound villas reasonably priced (well for AD anyway).

2 weeks ago we tried the Al Raha Beach Hotel (Sevilla Restaurant), not bad as an experience although i am not sure if they figure in the Entertainers' booklet for Abu Dhabi. In terms of entertainment for kids, they had a clown and a magician. They also had a section of the buffet specially for kids. Al Raha Beach have a really good deal on Cobone or Gonabit (sorry, cant remember which) it includes brunch and full access to the pool all day.
