Hi Julieh I think it is a great idea that your daughter speak to a life-coach / careers counselor. I am actually a certified life-coach (6 years experience), have worked with numerous teenagers, young adults, as well as adults who are deciding on their next (life) paths but also career paths/changes. This field is where my heart and passion is! Please email me at pseif1(at)gmail(dot)com. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I was wondering if any one had received confirmation, from their schools, on when the next academic year will be starting (2016/2017). I have heard that the schools are still waiting on KHDA notice, however when I called the KHDA I was given the start date of August 28, 2016? Am confused.

Hi Salamander, that is great news that you are thinking of going back to studying. To get you started, I can highly recommend COURSERA, they offer a lot of free courses through American and British universitities. It is a great way to see what direction you want to take, before making a significant time and financial investment. I have been getting my MS in Psychology for the past 2 years, part-time, and yes it is absolutely possible. I calculate about 20 hours of studying time, researching, writing, exam taking etc... per week. Hope this helps, and enjoy.

I am a big fan of KidsFirst here in Dubai on Al Wasl road. http://www.kidsfirstmc.com/ Also look at Ligthhouse Arabia on Jumeirah Beach Road 971 4 380 9298 Wishing you a lot of strength! And know that there is a lot of support out there if your daughter is on the Autism Spectrum.

I like Fairydusts point, knowing what his interests are would help in finding a club or meeting point for young adults. This could be in theatre groups, art classes, language classes or sports teams. I would ask him what he would like to do, learn, experience and go from there.

This is a tricky situation as you want to give your daughter as much responsibility (some freedom) to make choices. However I would not have a very good feeling letting her go to a non-supervised house party. Playing the devils advocate a lot could go wrong (and of course the chances are slim but still), alcohol could be involved, drugs are readily available in Dubai, peer pressure to do something she would normally not do. A good indication is her body language, so crying when you asked to drop her off and meet the host. That is for me a red flag and warning sign.

Besides the fact that we are paying for qualified teachers, I would also worry about some very important skills that this person does not have. Training in CPR for example, training in anti bullying, training in social skills matters or skills when working with children who need shadow teachers etc..., cognitive behavior in children .... and the list just goes on. There is a lot more to teaching than just teaching.

I was not going to add my two bits, but just can't help it. As I understand it we are talking about "cultural diversity"? So diversity between race, religion, social etc... When looking at cultural diversity yes we all do things differently, HOWEVER this does not mean one is wrong and the other is right. I profoundly believe that we are all equals / as human beings. And being treated as well as treating with respect is the fundamentals of humanity. When speaking about us/you westerners, that is a huge and very broad judgment, westerners are very diverse so you really can't clump us all together. By making such statements great opportunities of understanding and experiencing new things is being closed. This leads to being very narrow minded.... The statement that westerners have spoiled maids is just beyond strange and hard to comprehend. I wonder where humanity has gone.....

Hi I can recommend Cassandra DeBaere at the Wellbeing Medical Clinic. She is a fantastic psychologist and can surely help, or else refer you to a colleague. I would also ask her in regards to a good GP who is familiar with Pharmapsychology, especially here in Dubai where prescriptions can be filled quite easily, without the proper knowledge. There are also other options, if you would more information you can contact me privately. Hope this helps a little!

Hi, I can only recommend Kids First Medical Center. Have a look at their website and call their reception to see which psychologist / counselor would be best. They do have a long waiting list... but they are such great people. Best of luck

Hi Sunshine, I think your answer is in the happiness of your child. If he is so settled and happy with his environment, then I would definitely leave him put. We have been with Regent for over 5 years, and yes DIA was an option so was DAA, but my daughter has been so happy at Regent, she has done well with her studies, the school is small enough, that you can approach the staff, heads etc... But again it is a very personal decision! lots of luck

gentle bump... I have been doing the rounds with the various on-line universities, some great feedback, some extremely unprofessional and money seeking expériences, so if anybody is in the same boat as I, am more then happy to share my experience. Any feedback, tips, hints greatly appreciated :)

Thanks for your honest response and I feel for you and your son. I have been on an anti bullying platform from the US, joined after watching their documentary BULLY. As you can imagine they have loads of support systems in place, some work, others fail, but at least they are active. I am now seriously thinking of approaching schools in regards to showing the documentary, one to create awareness and two to help kids, educators and parents. I would be more than happy to share what I have found... Write me on Pseif1atgmaildotcom. Good luck and lots of courage, I got a similar response from my school .....

Hi Sive, my parents moved me from an American school to a small town school in Europe, when I was 12. Not only was it a change in curriculum but also in language and culture. And yes I hated it the first 6 months, but got over it, adapted and am now so glad my parents did what they had to do. It has definitely broadened my horizon and made me a more tolerant and understanding person. Good luck!

Upbeat007, you bring up an excellent point, and this goes for any profession in this catagory, therapists, mentors, life coaches, etc.. ALWAYS check their degrees, certificates, licences and make sure that they are from the correct governing bodies. Also shop around, as there are great professionals out there, that also have their ethic in check.

I was in a similar situation and my consulate strongly recommended that I get a new valid passport before leaving the UAE . They processed it with in one week, which is an exception but better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks so much for you replies! I totally agree grey zone to me equals red zone .... So I am really not happy on continuing like this and have there for also just worked for free . Beebers will also look into info you sent through, I have looked at all the free zone companies and RAK companies but it would still mean paying aed18000 - 25000. And I don't even make that in a year ....
