Ah, DD, you are American. That explains it. We Americans are the only ones who seem to think our home country is much, much better than Dubai. The Aussies think Dubai is cheap, and it is compared to Australia, the Brits think the weather is great, and it is not as rainy as in London. The South Africans think Dubai is so safe, and it is, compared to Johannesburg. But compared to New York, or anywhere in the states, Dubai is expensive, hot, and boring! The one and only time that I will lump my Canadian a$$ with being compared to my Yankee friends to the south. Couldn't agree more :)

DH picked up kids today at 2:30 and he said that he could smell it in the car and he was having difficulty breathing. Kids will more than likely being staying home tomorrow. I honestly don't blame the teachers, they are doing what they are told, the problem is that they are not being given all the information. I got this info off the internet - so whatever was burned or is still burning at the factory is not good: http://www.burningman.com/environment/resources/burning.html Check out the Frequently Asked Questions section - the 1st question in particular (cement, rubber, construction materials - as identified in the article link below)

Not all parents went to the meeting that was held at the Marriott - I did not, but received info after. Alot of questions the parents had went unanswered - like what exactly the chemicals were that were burning. Even questions about evacuation procedures could not be answered (and this by the secondary head teacher) who's job it was to report on this detail. Civil Defense didn't even show up and they were supposed to. It smelled this morning when I dropped my kids and if it smells again like that tomorrow morning, my kids will stay home. They were kept inside today as a precaution because of the smell.

Are you sure they are ticks? Ticks are really dangerous for pets (heartworm) and can be dangerous for people too if they get imbedded in your skin.

Can you buy tea tree oil here? I found adding a few drops to the children's shampoo bottle has kept the buggers at bay :) Yes, where do you find tea tree oil? Some pharmacy's here carry organic shampoos and conditioners, I can't remember the name of it. But it comes in a greenish bottle, if you ask the pharmacy they will know.

Coconut oil?? I didn't know that would work. I went the chemical lotion route, but wouldn't do that again. Tea tree oil is also good, it's an oil so hard for the buggers to stick to, and they hate the smell of it. A good thing for the nits is vinegar. Rinse the hair and scalp for the next few days with it. It gets rid of the gluey shell so the eggs can't stick to the hair shaft and it's great for soft shiny hair. Rinse with the vinegar everyday for a week after. Make sure you clean everything - I drycleaned all the comforters, pillows, etc and then left them at the drycleaner, cleaned and sealed in the bags for 2 weeks after - to make sure none of them survived. Stuffed animals you can throw into a sealed plastic bag, leave for 2 weeks and they should be okay. You need to vaccuum EVERYTHING!!! The bed, sofa, carpet. They are alot of work to get rid of.

No one mentioned after school activities :( DD dances 3x a week, 3 hours on Tuesday - thankfully she's grade 8 and can manage on her own. DS's are grade 3 and 4 and we just started into the homework routine yesterday. Both play football (American) 3x a week (Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday - Thursday practise will change to a Saturday game in about 2 weeks). On the off days, the DS's come home, snack, change and have free time till 5:30 (play with their friends, go to the park, swimming, etc), then they are MINE. Dinner by 6pm, then homework from 6:30 to about 7 (it takes a little longer some days). They both get the assignments for the week on Sunday and it's due the following Sunday so there is lots of time to get it done. I try to keep the weekends as free as possible (this is what I did last year) - if projects are due, than we have time on Saturday finishing it up. Computer time ends at 8pm, TV is off at 8:30 and then silent reading till 9 and then bed by 9. We just started this routine - fingers crossed it works this year again :)

Cartoon Network is horrible, I agree with Sue62 about Zeke and Luther - and it shows kids who have other interests as well (skateboarding, biking). @Green-ish - yes my guys are older than yours. But when mine were small, we were still in Canada and watched CBC shows, there was also YTV and TVO in the morning used to have really good morning shows for kids. Was saddened last weekend when we walked by the Wiggles movie poster - I have no one to go with anymore :-( I was and still am a fan, I think they are great for kids.

Really?! You think it's a terrible channel??? It's the only channel that my 14, 10 and 8 year old agree on. I don't even mind watching the shows on it. When you compare it to Cartoon Network (full of aggressive, cartoon fighting shows - which I notice my kids used to emulate), I'd much prefer their TV time be spent watching XD.

Hello Ladies, Does anyone know of any Strata/Community management positions available? My SIL is looking to come over from Vancouver Canada. She has years of experience and is extremely qualified. She has sold her assets there and is ready for a fresh start :) Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Can you send me her resume: Not sure if her experience is what our company needs, but doesn't hurt to try (and a fellow Canadian :) ) edited by radical3 on 18/08/2011

I've been waiting since April - that was the original deadline for completion. It's totally worth the drive to Abu Dhabi - I just hope that its all the same (donuts, coffee, bagels). I find some of the franchises are different when they come here (like Wendy's, even McDonald's here doesn't taste like McD's in TO). Let me know when the Canadian convoy leaves - me and my troops will be on board for the roadtrip :)

There is a time limit on what tests will have to be done. I think if the license is under 2 years expired, you can simply renew, over 3 years, it's an eye test, 5 years it may be a road test. Over 10 and you're back to square one - hello graduated licensing :) Check on the website, just google it. As for being able to renew it it depends on your status - are you claiming non-residence? If you are, you're not supposed to have a license, health card - any ties to Canada - those 2 can be deemed ties to Canada and you'll be subject to income taxation - fun!!! If you are out of country and paying income tax then you have a residence and pay taxes and can renew without issues - not sure what the laws are exactly though for this scenario.

Hi Kie Wow - it's almost like I could have written your post 14 years ago. My DD was the worst sleeper, night and day. During the day she would nap for about 15 minutes on her own, but if I held her or slept with her, she would sleep for an hour or more. At night, I would go through the routine, bath, massage, book, boob and bedtime. She would sleep for about 20 minutes and then start wailing, from 7pm to about 10pm (it's called the "witching hour"). Nothing I could do helped. She would finally tire herself out and fall asleep. It was around the 7 week mark that this happened. My doctor said she was abit colicky and there's not much you can do about it (do they sell gripe water here, that used to help abit, colick is gas in the tummy and the gripe water is made from anise and it helps with digestion and gas), just find what she likes and ride it out (my friends used to take their kids for midnight car rides to make the kids sleep, I used to just walk the house and bounce my DD) - the good news is that it doesn't last forever. I didn't use a pacifier when she was that small - check with your doctor, but if you are saying that you are having abit of trouble feeding, the pacifier may mix her up - baby needs to be on a good feed routine before using one. I agree with checking what your eating as well, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, beans (chick, lentil, fava, etc) may cause gas in your baby's belly. My DD wasn't the greatest sleeper as she got older either, but my other 2 kids were so different. I was shocked at how easily they went to sleep at night so each kiddie is different and not always difficult :) Have hope and definitely ask your hubby to take a shift for a few hours to help you get some sleep - lack of sleep is the worst thing and makes everything seem so much worse. Big hugs to you, just know it does end - I always say the first 3 months of a babies life is so hard on the parents and the baby - there is so much to get adjusted to for both of you. xxx

Did the US not modify the double jeopardy rule like many other western countries to allow someone to be re-tried for offences such as murder, manslaughter etc. if there is fresh compelling evidence or something? I know it was changed in the UK, can never keep up with US law though as it is just so different in every state!!! No. In the OJ Simpson case, the family of Nicole and her friend actually tried him civilly, I think the first time he was found guilty, but when he appealed the guilty verdict was overturned - I could be wrong on that.

I've been following it abit, moreso in the last 2 weeks than when it began over a month ago. My initial reaction was shock, but when you look at the evidence presented, there was nothing concrete that could really pin her to the murder. Like it or not, that is the American justice system. Her actions and her lies after her baby went missing are definitely suspect, but you can't convict someone on that. She had some involvement and her father for sure (he was a retired police officer), but unfortunately nothing that could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. My heart goes out to that poor baby and hopefully the truth will come out at some point.

I always thought Sunset Beach was aka Umm Sequiem Beach aka Jumeirah Free Beach (the one right beside the Burj al Arab). If that's the one you mean, then if you head onto the Beach Road towards the Burj (the Burj will be on your left), you'll go past Jumeirah Beach Hotel and then at the light with the Emarat station on your left, make this left, follow the street and the beach is in front of you.

Ha - sometimes I think EW is a fly on the wall in my house. We also had issues with our mattress this week. We have a King Koil Galaxy with pillow top. We bought it in August 2010. It's one of those you don't have to flip. Both my side and hubby's side were getting that body imprint on and we weren't sleeping well, so we called the shop. They picked it up and brought a replacement bed that was seriously as hard as a box spring - we had the worst 3 nights sleep on it (I even have a bruise from it). Anyway, they said because we didn't switch the sides, meaning switch head to foot and side to side, the imprint happens and there's nothing they can do about it. Hubby wasn't happy with that answer so he made some calls, spoke to the MD, threatened with going to the Dubai Chamber of Commerce to file a complaint and they agreed to refill the pillow top and return it back to us yesterday and ever so apologetic - no idea exactly what was said, but the guy was so nice to me. Hubby said next mattress is a tempur, but I've heard funny things about them too - I don't like their pillows so not sure I'm going to like the bed, I have shoulder issues, get migraines from it and hubby has problems with his shoulders as well.

Exactly. Hearing someone say, "Oh yeah, mine do that!" makes a huge difference. Or a knowing smile and an offer to help (I had 2 under 2 and a 4 year old - so definitely know how hard it is to manage when shopping).

I have tried to save money by shopping at C4, but every time I buy produce there is goes bad in two days. The apples are always bruised, no matter which C4 I visit. What is the secret to getting good stuff, C4 shoppers? Buy fruit and veg at spinney/waitrose or organic supermarket. Use C4 just for cleaning supplies, non perishable goods, canned stuff, cheese, cold cuts, dry pasta, etc..I avoid the meat the veg there-its always in bad shape it seems. and if it is good, it lasts about 24 hours I buy the fruit and veg at Spinney's, meat at Choitrams (the butcher out near my place is fab and the meat is always fresh because of the high turnover) and bulk stuff Car4. Gosh I miss Costco :(

Active living in Al Barsha have lovely stuff, they are on facebook too. If she's got the items in stock fine, but if she has to order stuff in - you are better off buying it online yourself. Our shipment traveled the world and the story kept changing as to where it was and why it was held up - just my personal experience.

Here's another one "Champagne dreams on a beer budget" This is a slippery slope as I have brought my kids along to attend parties but I always check with the Mom first and I always offer to pay for the extra month to feed. As my guys are getting older though, I haven't. I think it's good for kids to understand that they aren't always included in something their brother or sister do and I find something fun to do with the kiddie left at home. edited by radical3 on 08/03/2011

What on earth do pancakes have to do with shrove tuesday? And does this mean easter is next weekend? We LOVE pancake Tuesday - the day of the year we eat pancakes for dinner - my kids love it. Why pancakes? Because pancakes are made with eggs, flour and milk and during Lent (in my grandmother's time) they would give up all that for the 40 days, because it's a luxury item. What have people decided to give up for Lent this year? For me it's all things dessert :( It's gonna be a long 40 days, but on the upside, I may lose 10lbs :)

Seriously miserable because my kids are constantly ill. For example...JUST IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS.......daughter had strep...then son got tonsilitis, ear infection and chest wheeze and free flowing green goo...now daughter got white spots on her tonsils.... This is bl00dy constant..never seems to let up...so completely and utterly fed up....want to go home..or at least somewhere that is not this flippin' place Have you thought of having their tonsils removed? My guys used to get sick alot when we first moved here and *touchwood* they've been relatively sick free for 3 years now (they get the odd cold, but nothing like what they used to be like - we've been here 5 years and we suffered for 2 with these constant infections). My older DS still has ear issues, but that's more of his tubes are not fully developed and he's on his 3rd of grommets and they seem to be holding okay now. edited by radical3 on 16/02/2011

Migraines due to hormones and especially around your period are actually due to a lack of estrogen. My migraines started after my 3rd kiddie but were "manageable" (that's about 7 years now), I was seeing a chiropractor regularly though. In the last year they have gotten alot worse and its not just around the time I'm due that I used to get them. I went back to the chiro which has helped ALOT, but I realized just this month that the migraines I still get are due to hormones and googled why - lack of estrogen is what I came up with. There are some natural medicines that you can take to mimic natural estrogen, I haven't researched it yet - but will do. I take Relpax - the lowest dose. It works - Imigran does absolutely nothing for me. Relpax works best at the first hint of the migraine and it can make you sleepy so the best is to take it and go to bed. When I've researched abit more about the estrogen supplement I'll send you an email - I've taken it down. Migraines are not nice and there are some woman who suffer all month, on days when they don't have them, they celebrate and live life, I can't imagine having these all month. Good luck Arohadxb

As a Mom who's DD has participated in 3 of the productions put on by West End Production company, I can give you my opinion of our experience. The children in the play are not "employed", they are taking part in a production - they are amateur actors who enjoy being on the stage and you can see that in their faces. The cost of 2,000dhs plus costume is small when you consider the experience these kids are getting out of it. Call it acting lessons, dancing lessons, singing lessons - you can easily lump all those learnings into the cost of "tuition". Plus they are getting experience on the stage. My DD has renewed her love of dance and is actively working towards her grade 4 ballet exam and taking this love as far as she can - studying dance in university. She is confident and comfortable speaking and performing in front of other people which will help her later in life. My DD thinks this is a great opportunity for her and yes auditioning is heartbreaking, but if you don't put yourself out there, you'll never know what your potential is and that at the end of the day is what life is all about.

The people don't want anything from Mubarak except his resignation, how is it possible that he will look into making constitutional changes???? I think it's pretty incredible that so many people were gathered together for many days and nights and there was no violence until Mubarak brought in his hired guns, I truly believe that when Mubarak steps down (soon), that peace will continue to prevail over the country while they elect a new leader. If it's found that Mubarak had any hand in these violent riots he should be held accountable in a court of law.

Not sure how long you have lived here in Dubai, but nationality is the biggest question asked here and EVERYBODY does it. And the "everybody does it" reasoning is a good reason to do it yourself. Riiiigggghhht. LOL - mark my words eventually you will do it to (you need a few years here and more experience). I'm not saying it's a derogatory thing, it's just a natural question to ask, I meet someone and they ask me where I'm from, it's not such a big deal is it? Noooooo, riiiiiigghhht. Plastic surgery is not US only based, however making a show based on a competition for better looks or whatever it was about, is a trademark to a certain country (hello, the Bachelor, Bacheloretter series - good God, give me a break)

As for calling this American trash TV - the US has put out some pretty crappy stuff - The Jerry Springer Show, Jerseyshore, TeenMom, Chelsea Handler, Dr. 90210 (who apparently are making a Middle East version of the show - lovely!!!!) and anything else that E network shows - need I go on with trashy American TV examples? If it was a trashy French show, it would be called that, but in reality America puts out the largest number of TV shows and movies and alot of them are trash.

This is my personal opinion only and how I answer this question to my own kids, I am honest with them about death when they ask. Each one has asked about it at a different age - but I tell them that eventually everyone dies, it's just part of life. Normally people don't die till they are old and I usually point out examples within our family of who has lived really long, but sometimes people aren't very old when they die. We believe in heaven and that's where I tell them I'll be (hopefully), but that I'll always be watching them and protecting them. The stars are proof of souls in heaven watching down on their loved ones (that's not true, I know, but it's hard for a 4 year old to truly understand where you go). I also reassure them that you can't worry about death, you just have to go on living and playing and enjoying life.

True - but our plans are not necessarily "the" plans for our lives and there are lessons to be learnt in all the hardships that we face.
