There is a translation service available in the building attached to the Barsha Police Station (close to Gold & Diamond Park). I usually take docs there.

Like Daza, I started with sweet potatoes. Washed a whole, unpeeled sweet potatoe, pricked with a fork several times, wrapped in aluminum foil and shoved it in the oven to roast. It comes out really soft and virtually pureed! DS loved it! After 3 days of this, I gave him pears, which I peeled, sliced, steamed and then pureed. That was a hit too. After that I tried a new fruit/veg every week or so. Good luck, hope your baby loves solids :-)

Thanks for your suggestions, simpleasabc. Very helpful! I ended up calling their Head Office in Healthcare City on 04 550 8800 and the receptionist was able to give me the names and e-mail addresses of the clinic director as well as the director who oversees all of the clinics. I have e-mailed them and awaiting their response.

Had to do this last year and didn't fancy sending passports to Cairo, which you would have to do. Rang their embassy in Cairo and they told me a Schengen visa will do, so if you can combine the trip with a stopover in another Schengen country and then get a multiple entry Schengen visa, you should be fine. I would still contact their embassy to double check this advice is still valid!

Does anyone know of any nurseries that take toddlers on an hourly basis in the "new Dubai" areas? Sometimes I have to run a few errands and don't want to drag DS along. I would prefer to stick with the same nursery each time so there is some continuity. TIA!

Athens is an amazing city with so much to see and do! The food is delicious and if you go in the summer, all the fruit and veg are super fresh. I was tempted to bring back some with me but DH vetoed that idea :( We haven't been to the islands but if you plan to stay in Athens, the Grande Bretagne Hotel on Syntagma Square is excellent, both facilities-wise and location-wise. It's a bit pricey, but worth it IMHO. Enjoy your holiday!

It's timely that this thread was "bumped up" today because I was going to post and thank Di@DXB for her recommendation. After weeks of searching for wall mounted safety gates that would fit our (awkward) stairs, we decided to have custom ones made. We contacted Farhad based on the recommendations on this forum and he has just fitted two (stylishly designed!) safety gates in our home. The carpentry work was very professional and he spent more than 5 hours installing the two gates, ensuring that everything was done neatly and lined up properly. We did think initially that his quote was a bit on the high side (double what you would pay for store bought safety gates), but when we saw the work, we found it a fair price. We are now having our bathroom cabinet doors and skirting replaced by Farhad as well, as a cosmetic upgrade. I should also mention that he was generally on time with his appointments and finished the work on the date we agreed. So, thanks again Di@DXB. We were certainly pleased with our experience and sorry to hear that yours didn't go so well, KH :(

Just spoke to my friend and she suggested it would be better if your fiance went to the Court and asked to speak to one of the marriage officials (not the reception). Apparently, he needs to go to the civil matters section and meet with one of the "mazoons" (spelling?) who actually conduct the marriage ceremonies. They will be able to advise on the documents and procedure.

CZ_Expat, I checked with a friend who went through this recently and she had to present the divorce papers. Hers were in English so she only had to translate them to Arabic, although I'm sure you can have yours translated to English and then Arabic. From what I understand, they need the divorce papers to show that you have been divorced for a certain period of time (as this is a requirement for re-marrying in Islam). My friend had to have her original documents attested by the UAE embassy in her country and then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dubai. She then took these to an (authorised) Arabic translator here, who did the Arabic version and I think this had to be stamped by the Ministry of Justice. It sounded like a long winded process that involved a lot of running around! It may be slightly more complicated for you, unfortunately, because there is a third language involved and you may need to attest/stamp all of the different translations. Perhaps, like Cowboy suggested, you could just get some sort of statement in English to say that you are single, which you can then just translate to Arabic (and avoid all of the hassle). My friend also said that her fiance went to the Dubai court beforehand to ask about all of the documents needed and the procedure. He took her (English) divorce papers with him and showed them to the one of the "marriage officials" who then told him what she had to do to legalise them. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage and good luck with all the paperwork. I'm sure it will be worth it :)

Like Big Blue said, Spinneys occasionally has gripe water (the original Woodward's brand) but Life pharmacy on Al Wasl Road seems to have it in stock more consistently. That's where we bought ours when DS was a newborn and it worked much better than Infancol. Another "old wives tale" remedy for gas that I heard about from friends involves soaking a few cumin seeds in (organic) camomile tea and giving a teaspoon of this to the baby (with seeds removed beforehand, obviously). Did not end up trying it because we got our hands on the gripe water, so I have no idea if it works. We also held DS in a "face down" position after feeding, with our hand under his tummy and his head cradled in our forearm. (see here for example:[url=http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/crying-colic-14/treating-colic-slideshow'>link[/url'> - slide 2). Hope your LO gets through this stage quickly. edited by rawla on 07/12/2014

A friend introduced me to this one and it's one of my favourites now - toss spinach, sliced strawberries, feta cheese and browned pine nuts, together, then top with a bit of pomegranate molasses. You can also add sliced kiwi fruit if you like. The sweetness contrasts nicely with the saltiness of the feta!

Sameera Al Hamad at City Hospital is amazing! She helped me enormously with DS, even long after the delivery. She is very friendly and approachable, always took my calls and replied to SMSs. I seem to have misplaced her number but if you call the hospital they will give it to you. She also runs a breastfeeding support group. I think there is more info on the City Hospital Facebook page. Another vote for British Lasik! I had mine done there four years ago and it was a painless procedure that took less than 5 minutes. The worst part is when the anaesthetic wears off and your eyes start tearing like crazy. There is a bit of pain, but mostly discomfort really. You have to sleep with sunglasses (which they provide) on that night because the place where they make the incision needs to heal overnight. So its really to prevent you from accidentally rubbing your eyes or brushing against your pillow, etc. You need to follow the instructions they give you to the letter and you'll be up and about the next day. I was back at work 2 days after the surgery, and I could see much better almost immediately after it was done. Good luck with your decision. For me, it was one of the best things I did after living with glasses for 30+ years!

It gets even better... They now keep the landlord's AND the tenant's deposits! So if you rent out your property, you don't get anything back, but they still take the deposit from the tenant. Effectively, they are holding Dhs 8000 and Dhs 4000 in deposits for each villa and apartment respectively. No wonder they have a Dhs 4 billion profit! And, you are right, GE, they used to disconnect you only after 3 months of non-payment. Now it's 14 days.

Not sure if this will help, but a friend got candida while BFing and after trying all the recommended "old wives" (Gentian violet) and medical (Daktarin gel, Diflucan) treatments, the only thing that helped her in the end were probiotics. She bought the Ultimate Flora brand available in the fridges in pharmacies and I think she got the "highest" one (80 or 100 billion or something) and after this, things improved.

Agree with GE, best to go to the doctor. My DS went through something similar at 4-5 months and turned out it was bad case of silent reflux. No vomitting but lots of crying and back arching. He hated lying down and wanted to be upright all the time. The doctor prescribed Nexium which he was on for about 6 weeks and then it all just went away! Hope your friend's LO will be OK.

It's "opposite" Deira City Centre, but on the same side of the road. Probably adjacent to City Centre is a better way to describe it. If you are heading from Sharjah to Dubai, you will see it on your right as you drive past City Centre on Ittihad Road. Have looked on their website, but can't find a map.

Hi Monnie, I renovated my kitchen 18 months ago but it was done by IKEA so I can't help with some of your questions, but I can highly recommend Ceramic City (opposite City Centre) for wall tiles. They had a great selection, everything I wanted was in stock, the prices were reasonable and it was all delivered within 2 days. I had ordered a small quantity of tiles for the guest bathroom from RAK Ceramics prior to that, and that was the complete opposite experience! I struggled to get the attention of a salesperson at their Deira showroom because it was so busy, none of the tiles I wanted were in stock and the ones I eventually ordered had to come from the factory RAK! It took almost a week to deliver and then, to top it off, the driver refused to off load the tiles from the truck saying it was not his job. Good luck with your renovations!

Thank you, Doubting Thomas: "So easy for people to say "buy business"...oh how I wish I could afford it but sadly, for those of us in the real world it's a struggle to even afford cattle !!" ... and son2mum10: "I agree with Marroosh we all need to be considerate to others." Life isn't perfect and we can't always have it our way, but we can try to find a win/win solution for ourselves and others, rather than a lose/win one. Unfortunately, the design of plane seats is outside our control so what's the next best solution that ensures we are comfortable and at the same time we're not causing discomfort to the person behind us? Flying BC is the ideal solution, but like DT says, it's hardly realistic for many of us. Maybe slowly reclining the seat only half way so that the person behind isn't suddenly jammed, is another? Or telling the person behind you that you have to recline the seat fully due to medical reasons but you will put it back up for meal times and if needed (e.g. BFing)? Or maybe airlines should just not allow seats to recline by more than 2 inches. This is actually a highly debated topic online and there are many views and opinions about it (just google "reclining seats on planes"), as well as advice: [url=http://www.independenttraveler.com/travel-tips/travelers-ed/the-etiquette-of-seat-backs-and-elbow-room'>link[/url'>

Unfortunately, no. We had to organise for someone to come in and remove the old kitchen. DH sorted that out, as well as the granite countertop. I'm not sure which companies he used. The granite was charged based on measurements plus the cutting/labour/installation. We were given a whole range of prices depending on whether we wanted the inexpensive granite for a couple of thousand Dhs or the more costly ones that were Dhs 10,000+. I don't have any integrated appliances from IKEA. I used my existing appliances and they measured around those.

I had an IKEA kitchen put in last year and the granite countertop done by a 3rd party, so yes, it is doable! IKEA were generally great except for items out of stock. You will need to make an appointment with an IKEA designer and pay a Dhs 500 (refundable fee). They then come over and take the measurements at your home, following which you go to your appointment, select the kitchen you want, mixing and matching the different options. I think what TB meant by the "sides" is the empty space if the cupboards don't take up the whole wall, since their cupboard sizes are standard. What they do there is just put a fake panel so it looks like it's part of the cupboards. The biggest challenge is the stock because after your kitchen has been designed and all the items are listed, there is a very good chance not all of them will be in stock! In my case about 80% of them were, which the salesman said was actually quite good. You then go and pay for the kitchen and they book a date to the installation (can be weeks later coz they're quite busy). They book two days, but mine was installed in one - very efficiently! The workmen were really great. I did have a problem with different shades on some of the doors and I later found out that was because they are not all supplied by the same company! Some doors come from a supplier in one country, for example, and others from from a supplier in another country. After the kitchen was installed, they refunded me the payment I made for the design and over the next couple of months they followed up with the remaining 20% of the items as they became available (drawer handles, "skirting", the closing mechanisms that prevent slamming, etc.). It was a pain because I had to keep calling to check if things were in stock and then book appointments to have them installed at different times. That was the only negative, but considering I paid Dhs 11,000 for an amazing new kitchen, it was worth it. Also a warning that they do not connect the sink plumbing so you will have to get a plumber in to do that. As for the granite countertop, on the day that the kitchen was installed a company came in and took the measurements. A few days later they installed the countertop. The IKEA kitchen is very much able to hold the weight! Good luck with you new kitchen! I'm sure it will look fantastic.

There are also works by other authors (Hanan Al Shaykh, Leila Ahmed) but some are hard to find in Dubai. My all time favourite is The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz.

Thank you so much for your responses! There's lots to consider, I guess. We have a few schools near to where we live, and all have different curricula but they don't necessarily have good ratings from KHDA, so I'm a dilemma about whether to send DS to one of these to start with because its close by and its *only* (!) primary school and then transfer him later to a better rated school that follows a curriculum which would suit him. Nayls85, good point about the parent feedback. Thanks. I should probably clarify that by "facilities" I actually meant a newish, safe, fun learning environment, rather than pool, etc. So that when I walk into the school, it feels like a place the kids want to be in. Any other views and advice to help me decide would be much appreciated.

Congrats, BellaUK, on your new arrival! My DS was a bit like what you described and it took us months to work out he actually had reflux. We tried gripe water and Infancol. I also don't consume much dairy so we eliminated allergies. What gave it away in the end was his constant arching. Everytime we put him down on his back he arched like crazy. He also refused to be placed on his tummy. The only position he was comfortable in was being carried facing forward and we had to keep walking. If we sat down or stopped, he would scream. We thought he was just being demanding, but eventually the doctor suggested we try Nexium. Just a couple of hours after we gave that to him, he was a different baby! The arching stopped, as did the screaming, and he started to enjoy tummy time. Your DD is still quite small so its probaby too early to tell but I just wanted to share our story with you in case she displays similar symptoms later. BTW DS was EBF until almost 5 months when we introduced solids. Good luck, I can really relate to what you're going through and I hope your little angel is fine.

AnonDubai, that's really painful and I feel for you. I had it all with DS when it comes to breastfeeding - thrush, blisters, cracked nipples, ... Cecile really helped me and I would recommend her wholeheartedly! If you delivered at City, a consultation with the LC is free. I went to see Sameera a few weeks after delivery and was told it was part of the service. The advice about using your own milk to heal is worth trying. It worked for me. All you need is a few drops. Form a C with your thumb and index fingers and squeeze/roll at the outer edges of your areola (not the nipple). When the drops appear, rub on the nipple and let it air dry. I hope this helps you too! Wishing you all the best.

I second Yellow Hat at Times Square. They did an amazing job with my car. It looked new, almost, on the inside. They were able to remove coffee stains and get into all the crevices to get rid of dust. You can also use Airmiles with them. I did have to book in advance and its an all day job. You book in the shop upstairs in the mall, and drop off your car downstairs in the car park.

Thanks, dolleymadison. As I said, there are many views on this and many research studies done in different ways on different populations. You won't find a definitive answer in the medical journals. Sorry - but that's the reality of research studies. They all have biases and limitations. I believe that parents need to make their own informed decision. My view is based on talking to my pediatrician, my own research and my friends' experiences. That was enough for me!

Jupiter, I would check with your pediatrician first, but mine encouraged me to introduce solids from 4 months since DS was ready. The latest thinking is that babies can be introduced to solids anywhere between 4 and 6 months depending on their growth and nutritional needs. I even have a friend who started Cerelac at 3 months with her DS. While some of my friends make their own (mashed) food for their children, others rely on ready-made rice or what porridge. In all cases, the children are doing well. There are many views on this and IMHO you should do what works best for your child, after consulting your pediatrician.

Norak, is the hum accompanied by a slight vibration in certain spots? I ask because we had the same issue when we lived in the Springs. It was mostly upstairs, though, and could be felt most in the corridor. It sounded like a generator or something, with humming and vibrations. It was really loud in some areas but if you took a step in another direction it would suddenly die down. Like you I tried everything to isolate it and at one point I thought it was the AC units on the roof, but we felt it even in the winter when the ACs were out of action for months. It could have been something on the neighbour's roof and some friends theorised that it was an electrical substation nearby! We never got to the bottom of it and it was really frustrating because some nights you could really feel it and we even had trouble sleeping. I hope yours isn't as bad as that.
