Pies are great too! I had the apple pie and the peanut butter cream one, v good! Be aware you can change the frosting on the red velvet cupcake if you wish ;) I prefer butter cream instead of whip :D

Al Ahli is a bit pricey for those of us w/out insurance :( I wouldn't mind spending if something was wrong, but this is just a physical and to get the Dr. to fill out the registration form. nole, I called Tadawi and it seems like the Dr you linked isn't there anymore :( Do you know where she's moved, if she's gone to another clinic or something? Thanks everyone!

List of registered, legal transport/taxi services in Qatar: http://www.carsindoha.com/taxis.php I use Al Afdhal to take me and my son to his soccer practices twice a week from Muntazah to Doha College. One way costs me 35 qr and they're professional and know their way around. They drive brand new honda accords. I recommend them.

It closed for good. DH went over there last week to get me a taco salad, it would have been my second time eating there, and there was a guy that said the place is closed for good ;( I need mexican and now the only choice i have is to make it at home, which isn't a problem, the problem is every time i buy hard taco shells they always taste old and not crunchy! What a catastrophe!

Ok I'm going to try to send poor husband to the mexican place today and see if they have some good tacos. Could someone please tell me where exactly the Al Rayyan Petrol Station is? He says he knows where it is but it seems like there are two different petrol stations referred to as Al Rayyan so I just want to make sure! Thanks again! marycatherine - that doesn't look anything like what I'm craving unfortunately THIS: http://www.annarbor.com/calendar/photologue/photos/01%20san%20fu/cache/050312_ENT_SanFu_MRM_10_display.jpg is what i'm looking for! Omg just looking at the pic is making my tummy rumble, lol! Most places don't put that many veggies, so that is definitely a very glammed up pic, but it's what I'm looking for!

Thank you ladies! I'll be sure to check out the places mentioned! Has anyone been to the Chinese restaurant in city center? Across from Applebees? Its seems like they've got a nice lunch buffet but we discovered it at the end and it seemed like the food was all gone! From what we could see it seemed kinda good.

I actually looked into all of those, but I noticed you didn't list evolution! This is the first semester that they're offering swimming at Doha College and I really like them! My son is 5 years old and after only a month is almost there! The coaches are great and the program is great. Out of all the swim schools you listed I felt that evolution was the most professional as well as the best priced. (1295 per semester/three semesters a year, two 1/2 hour classes per week for 10 weeks) Also, you might want to check to see if the schools you're looking at have room before researching further as a lot of them are full!

I did Raahtad but tuition is 42K plus 7K for mother tongue fees...so that puts it at about 50K/year which unfortunately is above our budget :(

The cut off date here is Sept 1 for most schools, only ACS (Amercan Curriculum) has a cut off date of Sept 30. So he'll be considered 2 years old on Sept 2013. From your question about DESS I assume you're looking to put him in British school? If so, they start Nursery at age 3, so he won't be accepted until Sept 2014. Also, DESS gives priority to British passport holders so it's very hard to get in if you don't have one! You've got lots of time until then though. I'm not sure if any of the big schools accept any children that are 2 years old, but there are LOTS of great nurseries that you could put him in for Sept 2013. Hope that helps!

If you only want schools that follow the USA curr I recommend also applying to ACS, this is only their second year but I haven't met a parent that has anything bad to say about it yet! Also look into International School of London as they teach the IB curriculum, which is international. If you're open to putting them in a UK curr school there are more options there. A lot of schools recommend applying to four different schools so you can be sure you'll get a place in at least one school until you can secure a place in your school of choice. HTH!

Thanks chardfan I've looked into Sherborne, but haven't put it on the list. To be honest I haven't heard good things about it :( We're going to apply to Doha College, Doha British School and Newton British school. All are around 30K a year. I need a fourth choice but haven't found anything with good recommendations in that price range. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know!

marycatherine - thanks for letting me know! I started hearing this after I went there so I called another vet describing the kitten and also what was done and they said that no, the medicine and advice given was right and no worries! So yay, we're well on our way to our goal of a healthy kitty! Raahtad: You're welcome to come on over to play with her anytime! I just wouldn't recommend these first couple of weeks since she is being de-wormed and I haven't given her a good rub down yet, but she's so much fun to play with I'm sure they'll love her! I wouldn't worry too much about your cat, I think with all the love and attention and play she'll receive from you and the kids she probably wont' miss the outdoors too much!

Actually if I'm going to be completely honest I did none of the convincing it was all the cat and my son! A lot of it from the kitten though, it seems like her mom lives near the garbage can right outside our apt building and this one is just so brave, would always run up to us and play with us when we came home and the little manipulator would focus on kids more! So of course we started to put food out for her and would always find her outside our door whenever we left or came home. That's when my son asked for a kitten and my husband said ok! Just like that! I told him "Don't promise him something you won't give" and he says no we'll get a cat! Of course I was floored! I have been trying to convince him for three years! Anyway his idea was to go to souq waqif, which I nixed and told him no we'll adopt one from CIQ or QAWS and then we said why do that when we've got one right outside our door? THEN I discovered her mother coming and attacking her in the morning so I let her in for good and that's all she wrote! If we do leave Doha we'll take her with us, I couldn't leave her and I don't care about the expense! When you take on a pet it's for life and you're responsibility, not fair to give her up to a shelter once she's gotten so used to you! She really does become a part of the family... Yes we've been here 7 years and we always plan to leave but something always happens that makes staying here more profitable than going back to the states! So we'll see where the wind blows us, but wherever we go, I don't plan on leaving anyone behind ;) As for convincing your husband...get planning with those kids! If anyone will convince him, they will! Why don't you bring yours over from Oz? That might be easier for him to agree to than getting a new kitty...

Def objective but my thing is that I refuse to pay almost the same ticket price for screen as big as some TV screens at home! I refuse to go to The Mall or Landmark and will usually go to City Center or Villagio. Villagio is the newest cinema and it's very nice. My humble opinion and preference of course!

Thanks for the info Rachel, but I should have been more specific. I am aware that age-wise the grades even out but our issue is that my son's birthday is Sept 8, 2007, so he missed the cut off date by a week and that irks me. Right now he's in Reception (British curr) which is four year olds, even though he turned 5 before the school year even began. But what I see, and according to my research comparing the two curriculums, is that the curriculum for reception is actually the kindergarten curriculum in the US system. So basically he is technically in the class for four year olds even though he was the first to turn 5, but he's studying the same information that 5 year olds in the states are studying. Am I making sense? I think I had to explain this like five times to DH before I was able to get my point across! Now, the cut off date in the states (for the area we're in) is at the end of Sept, so if we were in the states now he would be attending Kindergarten, not pre-school which age-wise is equated with Reception (but NOT curriculum-wise!). Now, if I get him in ACS that would be fine as their cut off date is also at the end of Sept so no issues there. But with ASD the cut off date is Sept 1, so he would be a year behind. BUT if I put him in the UK system he'll be studying the same stuff that he would have been studying if he was in the states, so that when we do go back to the states he'll be on track with the kids his age. And most of the UK schools have quality and are easier on the pocket! Win-win, right? I hope? Are you sure that DC gives preference to British passport holders? When I went over there I asked if they did and the admissions woman told me no, they only go by school records and grades when choosing new students! I'm going to be real annoyed if that's not the case! I knew about DESS which is why I'm not going to even try applying there, even though I wish I could as I've heard it's a GREAT school. Thanks for your advice! :)

Yes exactly Rachel the gov't clinics don't treat or vaccinate anyone without an RP and health card anymore :( Everyone gets sent to the clinic in Mesaimeer. My SIL had a baby 6 months ago and didn't have RP for herself or the baby yet and was sent there. Here's the location: http://qatarmap.org/clinic/Mesaimeer_Health_Center and I think the number is 4406 4222 although I haven't tried the number so not sure that's accurate. I'd call qtel or look it up on their database or something. Then again everyone knows the woes of trying to get someone to actually answer the phone so usually just going early (like 7:30 am) is your best bet. I said the location is in Muaizer before sorry I was mistaken! Was trying to go off of memory and I should have learned by now that that's not a good idea in my case! lol

Thank you yyz! We've been saying that she adopted us actually! She literally attached herself to us in a way that was so heartwarming and so cute we couldn't do anything BUT take her in! Those were my thoughts exactly about putting her out. Even though we're in an apt building and she stays right outside the door, I just don't want to do that to her. Especially in these beginning stages, we're still earning her trust! I wish I had a spare room but unfortunately I don't. He's starting to understand that kitty is sick and if he keeps touching her he'll get sick too. Have also started to teach him how to play with her from afar, with string or little plastic balls which she loves to run after and attack. Also, all this happened over the weekend so he'll be in school for most of the day so that by itself will offer more hours of separation.

You can also get him done at the government immunization center in Muaizer. At least I think it's in Muaizer. It's a zoo but they'll vaccinate for very cheap and no need for RP there. Al Ahli will certainly do it but it'll cost you a pretty penny unfortunately :(

Hi Raahatd, thanks so much for your reply! I'm from the US, been here in Qatar for about 7 years now. :) Things have changed a bit since I posted this. We've decided to go with the British Curriculum as kids are a year ahead and that way when we do go back to the states he'll be either gifted or a year ahead (I hope!) So we're going to apply to Doha College and NBS and I'm still looking for two more British Curr schools that are around the same price range (30 - 40K QR a year). Have looked at DBS website but still haven't done much research on them, do you know how much they adhere to the Montessori way of teaching? If you have any other recommendations for school I'd be more than happy to hear them! I think I remember seeing your posts when you first came about how you had to switch your children when you were in Australia, right? I'm so glad to hear they're doing well in ACS, I hope they stay that way! If you're interested in switching I'd start applying to ISL and the other schools you think are better since you know more now and see if you get a place for 2013? Thanks Again!

HI Ladies just wanted to give you an update! We took her to Parkview Vets and turns out she's only 5 weeks old the poor thing! Got her nails clipped and her first deworming serum and they sent us off with some to give to her tomorrow and I'm supposed to go back in two weeks for more. She's also got an official birthday, August 25. Am also supposed to take her for vaccination at 9 weeks old and got LOTS of advice on how to clean her as she's still so young she's not really doing it very well herself! Budget wise we didn't spend as much as I thought we would have to and of course that I'm happy about too ;) Now we're just worried about the whole deworming process as we have a 5 year old and of course he just can't keep his hands off of her so we're thinking to put her out for the next three days until that process is done, but my heart breaks at the thought! Especially since we discovered that her mother is coming and attacking her every morning at around 6 am! Any thoughts or advice on this? I love the little kitten (DS has named her Amy) but not enough to risk my DS's health!

Thank you ladies so much for all the information! I hope I can still bother you with a couple more questions. What is the procedure at the govt vet? Do they open on Saturday? Do I just walk in? What should I buy before I go and from where? Will they bathe and trim her claws and everything? Can I also register her and get her papers done there? Shouldn't I also get blood tests done since she is a stray and I know nothing about her history? Again thank you all so much for the advice, I'm on pins and needles waiting to get it all done so I can have her safe at home!

Gov't vet! I didn't even know there was one! Where is it? Is there a website or number or something? I've been calling around the vets and it's going to cost upwards of 500 QR to get her vaccinated and de-wormed and everything! So if I can go somewhere where they'll do a good job and it'll be about 200 I'll take her yesterday! (We've become very attached, can you tell? lol)

Hi All, We're looking at school for the 2013/14 school year and I was told to apply to at least four schools just to make sure we have a spot somewhere next year! I'd like to stick to the American curriculum so we will be applying to ASD, ACS, ISL and one of the Newton schools. Now I've heard that each of the Newton schools is run individually so I was just wondering which one, in your opinion, is the best? I'm looking for all Native English speaking teachers and a student body compromised of mostly expats. I'm leaning towards Newton British School but that's mostly because I haven't been able to find many comments/reviews on the other three branches! Also if anyone has any suggestions for another good IB school as I'm under the impression that ISL is really the only school who has a total IB curriculum. If we can't get a spot in any of the two American schools then the IB curriculum is our best bet. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! My head is swimming with all the research I've done in the past two months!) Any help would be much appreciated! He should be going into First Grade American next year and Year 1 I think British Curr.... edited by Roosha on 16/09/2012 <em>edited by Roosha on 16/09/2012</em>
