Which one do you mean...the white villas that are not finished yet? Or the one across the road, behind Dubai College?

Malawi70, can you actually just walk into their warehouse as a private person and buy a bag of coffee beans? Do you have to buy a certain amount (bulk) or can you also walk in for 1 kg? TIA

Going back from the Euro to a country's previous currency might end up a real disaster as it also will cost a lot of money (esp. for the countries that had strong currencies in Europa, such as the Deutsche Mark and the Dutch guilder). Will def. not solve the problems of this moment....which is why Germany and Holland keep bailing out weak countries. I don't believe the Euro will let go of real soon, it would only worsen the problems.

MrsMozz, sorry to hear about your friend. Must be really hard to go through divorce, esp. when you're in a foreign country without family around. At least she's got a good friend in you :) There's an organisation in Dubai, called Nederlanders in Nood ('Dutch in Distress'). Maybe she can call them...in their advert it says they offer help in legal, financial and medical matters, and also assist with family- and personal matters. They have a 24-hrs help line: 050 458 2332 Maybe they can offer advice on what to do. HTH

I'm looking for a good painter that can repaint my DD's desk. It's now pale yellow, but she wants a white and pink desk (what can I say...pink still is her favourite colour ;) ) Any recommendations? I've tried searching old threads, but painters that came recommended are mostly for painting walls etc. TIA

I've also seen them in Dragon Mart, not too far from the main entrance. Some of the shops with bags have the trolleys as well.

My DS's class did an experiment with their science teacher. She bought French Fries from MacDonalds, Burger King and KFC. They kept the fries in class under a glass top, and within 2 days the MacDonalds fries were all green and mouldy, Burger King took about 4 days, but the KFC fries were not showing any decomposing up till a week :\: Made my DS a bit more aware...he hasn't eaten any junk food for a while ;)

JShepherd: we're not in main street, but one of the cul-de-sacs near pool. They've forced the window of maid's room open, then climbed in (window is at back of house, away from street). They walked out through one of the sliding doors to the garden. I'd blocked all the sliding doors with a wooden stick so they can't slide without taking away the stick. Think I'll have to put a bar before all the other windows. I do believe that they have watched the house, as my DH was home last week, after 3 weeks away, and only just left on Friday again... Will ask our friend to report it to security as we're not in Dubai yet. He's waiting in our house at the moment for police to arrive.

Just a warning; we're away on holiday and our help just returned from her holiday this morning and found that someone has broken into our house. They've taken all easy-to-take electronic items, such as laptops, camera and money. We're in Mirador, so please be aware that they're on the prowl :(

My DD had lots of anxieties, amongst which she was too scared to go to bed and sleep on her own. Got a tip to give her a cuddly animal or something to sleep with that belonged once to me or her dad. I actually bought a new soft animal ('little lamb') and kept it for a few days in my bed. We gave her the little lamb and told her that it used to be mine, and that when she took it to bed, she had a little bit of me with her. And she wouldn't be alone anymore. It did work, not immediately, but little lamb goes everywhere (thankfully I bought 3 little lambs, so we've got a spare one just in case...) A few weeks later she decided that she wanted her dad with her as well, so 'elephant' came to join little lamb. But we have hardly any problems with her going to bed nowadays as long as litle lamb and elephant are there. Although I do find that when she is overtired, she gets a bit teary and starts telling us she's scared of sleeping. So she really has to go up in time. Good luck, I hope you can find a way to get her to sleep without being scared.

We've taken loads of chocolate dates in suitcases...just stick them in fridge beforehand until they're quite cold. Then, just before you head to airport, wrap them in aluminium foil. They should be ok when you arrive...

hey, sorry to hijack but... i've been trying to get through to GEMS DSO for a week now, and i havent been able to get through so i was wondering if you ladies could help. I filled out the enrollment form online, and i just need to know where to go to hand in the rest of the paperwork/fee...ect. I know it's another one of the GEMS schools, but does anyone know which one it is, and when they are open? I know i'm pushing my luck at this point, and will probably be put on a waiting list, but better on the top of that list then the bottom right? Registrar is located in Wellington International school on SZR...and I think she will be there until they finished building Gems DSO. I don't know what timings she'll be there, but I imagine in the mornings. Best to give her a call beforehand.

Can they also apply for their exit pass in one of the POLO-exit passes in the Philippines? According to my maid she got hers last year from the POLO close to where she stayed in Philippines. Don't want to let her go and then finding out that she cannot apply for exit-pass in Philippines itself, and it has to be done here in Dubai?

Been to my GP here in Dubai recently and came away shocked! She told me I never should have been on combination pills (like Marvelon) with both estrogen and progestin, because they are well known to trigger migraines. She recommended Cerazette (or any other mini pill) which only has estrogen, as they are usually prescribed to women suffering from migraines. But as Cerazette is out of stock here in Dubai, I haven't yet tried to see if it makes a difference. Although am thinking of not going back on pill altogether as I feel much better, and haven't had a migraine in 2 weeks (as opposed to every week :\: ) edited by Rotetho on 26/06/2011

Had a friend being stopped by customs in the Netherlands. He had a fake Rolex on his wrist, but had put the boxes in his suitcase. Customs wanted him to declare the watch and pay taxes on it. When he explained that it was a fake (and you're allowed to bring in a certain amount or value of fakes in the Netherlands), they had another good look. Still customs declared it a real one. Our friend was, of course, really persistent that it was a fake one from Karama. Customs brought in jeweller from well-known jewelly store in Holland, he looked at watch and also declared it a real one. Only after a phone call to Rolex to check the serial number, they found out it really was a fake one :)

We always try to get as many parents as possible together to get a present for the teacher (and TA). This year we'll probably buy a digital photo frame and put pictures on of all the children in the class. Done it once and just asked all the parents to mail pics of their children (or on USB stick). Teacher loved it, as it was a lovely reminder of that school year. I think parents contributed AED25 per child and that gave enough money to buy one. A memory book with pics, drawings, poems or whatever a child comes up with is also a really nice gift.

Hi Bubi, When my kids started at Wellington, we did go to the induction day. It is just the children who will start new at Wellington, all the other students start the next day. The children do need to attend in full uniform. Although my children started in yr. 1, 4 and 6, I assume Induction day will be sort of same for FS. The time is used to get to know the teacher, bit of the surroundings and there probably will be a meeting for new parents in which the heads of primary/secondary and principal will be introduced etc. It will not take the entire school day, but I cannot remember how long it was (3 years ago ;)) It is nice to get to meet the teacher when there's only a few new children, instead of a full class at once... I'll try and find out if they already scheduled how long the induction day will be in September.

Hi Sophia, The small canal boats have plenty of room at the back of the boat to put your stroller when folded...when you do a canal cruise, check the duration. I've done it with my (at the time ;)) 4 yr old and they get quite quickly bored with the boat trip. You don't want to be stuck for 1,5 hours :\: Amsterdam's got a lovely zoo; Artis...always an option as your 4-yr old will love it. To get to Artis, you can take a tram from Amsterdam Central Station. No problem to take your stroller in the tram either. If the weather is nice (read...no rain ;)) walking alongside the canals is lovely. There's also NEMO (science centre), http://www.e-nemo.nl/en/? There's a lot of activities involving science, but in a fun way. I took my 4 yr old with her brothers, and she had a really good time. Did lots of activities. If you don't mind taking a longer trip by train, there's a few cities around Amsterdam that are really nice as well (Alkmaar, Volendam, although that can be very busy in summer!) You can check public transport via http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/, it will give you timings of trains, busses etc. And if you're in the Efteling, be sure to take your time for 'Het Sprookjesbos' (Fairytale Forest). It is soooo lovely.. I went there as a child with my parents, and now go back every year with my children. If you need more info...just let me know. HTH

Hi Sophia, Public transport is very well organised in Holland...and staying at airport hotel, you can easily catch a train to Amsterdam and from there on to anywhere else. Taxi's can be quite expensive. Not sure about car seats in taxi's....never took one when we were still in Holland ;D I'm off to doctor's now with DS, when I come back, will put up some more info....

I think homework is an issue with most teenagers (and I've got 2 at the moment :\: and it is so hard to see if they genuinely do not understand or comprehend the work, or they just don't want to do their homework. What really helped for me and my 2 teenage DSs was a reward in the long run. They really, really wanted a particular phone (as everyone in school has one, mum! ;-)). Before, when I asked about homework, they always either had none, had it done in school, wasn't important or they didn't understand what to do, how to do it or the teacher didn't explain well *sigh* The condition we set was all homework done on time, and they had to get their target grades school had set. They had to meet our conditions for at least 3 months....then they would get their reward. But they have to keep up their homework otherwise they will have to give back their phones... I've had someone say that it was bribery, but the children didn't think of it that way at all....they got something they really wanted and felt really proud when they handed in their homework on time and received a good grade. I tried before by taking away computer, Ipod or set another 'punishment' when they didn't do their homework....but it didn't really make them do homework. It only caused friction and resentment. I hope school can give you some ideas as how to solve the issue of homework, and if your DS really doesn't understand the task given, or just doesn't want to do it..

I give my teen, just as most people do back home, a clothing allowance. This means he needs to buy his own clothes (for free time, not anything relating to school), books, or any other things he wants to spend it on. He gets 250 dhs a month and I must say he spends it wisely :D I think they have to learn how to budget their own money and getting a job here isn't as easy as back home. His friends back home all have jobs; working at certain fast-food chain, picking apples in the orchards, baby-sitting. But he can't do that here.... So this money is strictly his and if he wants to blow his entire monthly money on a pair of trainers that will cost him 2 months worth, so be it... I must admit he is not one to go out much, so doesn't have to spend much in that respect. But it is giving him a fair outlook on how far his money reaches

Hi CW, We lived in Bahrain 3 years ago and would I go back...yes, yes, yes! Bahrain is very small, very friendly and brilliant if you have a family. On the whole living there was much cheaper than Dubai. Rents are lower (although still very high compared to home), electricity and water were cheaper, going out was cheaper. I haven't been recently, so can't tell you about costs of living now, but hearing from friends their rents have stayed same to 3 years ago, or even slightly less. Because it is such a small country, you'll find your way round very quickly. The best place to live for expats (esp. concerning preschools/schools) is Sar...although I hear that Amwaj is nice as well (but near airport and feels a bit far out). The downsides of Bahrain; because of its size...you really need to get off the island every now and then. There's some protests because of dissatisfaction of Shia (sp?) population. The ones in power are Sunni and Shia population are lot poorer. So you do have the protests near the villages. There is not as much to do as you can in Dubai, but there's the water park (never really busy like Wild Wadi etc.), play areas in the malls, clubs of which you can become members without endless waiting lists and the extravagant prices they charge you here in Dubai. If you have the chance, go over to Bahrain for a weekend and check it out. It's only an hours flight. HTH

@Sandy_Dogg: that's too funny ;) He just came back with his manager, as my DH called company he doesn't appreciate gardener peeking through windows to see what we've got in the house. He claimed he didn't ask for beer as he is muslim and doesn't drink beer?! Well, he sure did ask for one! I would have been happy to give him a Coke or Pepsi, 7-up or Sprite (all in the fridge ;)), but not a beer he claims to have seen.
