I know a very good rheumotologist in the UK who I have been seeing for my disc problem (Dubai doctors are very quick to cut). He will be able to refer your brother to a neurosurgeon if necessary. Dr Robin Garnett. He works out of St Thomas Hospital and BMI Blackheath/BMI The Sloane. He specialises in rehabilitative medicine, particularly back pain. He was formally The Chairman for the British Society for Rehabilitative Medicine and is on a lot of boards, panels, societies and charities for rehabilitative medicine. I think his background is military.

Of course in the long run perhaps something good may come of this. As high streets close property owners will reduce rents in order to desperately try and lease their property (my mums local town high street store rates have gone through the roof). Smaller independent businesses may be able to then afford to move back to the highstreet once all the chains have gone. Then maybe we can have a local friendly music store, camera store, off licence etc. instead of a tax dodging chain employing cheap staff who don't know and don't care about their products. We can live in hope.

Jessops too. What a sad time for British high streets - so far, due to the recession, all these stores have closed and thousands of jobs lost: Woolworths Jessops HMV La Senza JJB Sports Comet Clinton Cards GAME Peacocks Habitat Oddbins Zavvi / Virgin megastore MFI Any more? I'm not convinced all these stores closed purely due to recession. A number of these shops just have not moved with the times or been competitive enough. In my opinion a high street shop needs to offer something more than an online shop in order to survive. In the past this would be customer service. Something which for technical and media products should be easy to do. Jessops, HMV, Comet, Game and Virgin should have been able to do this. Running successful competitive priced websites combined with stores filled with passionate, possibly geeky staff that know their products and can order in products promptly for customers would have gone a long way to keeping these places afloat. I don't mind paying an extra 5% or so in store if receiving personalised and informed service.

I recently tried to buy a book from waterstones and i ended up cancelling the order as after 10 days of the website saying "waiting to be picked up from our warehouse" i was a bit fed up of waiting.... I had the same problem. Ended up waiting 5 weeks for delivery of my books. Waterstone's are fortunate that people like to browse in store, however if they don't do something I fear they may be next.

And is not accepting gift vouchers. Which I have. Which is silly really as I'm sure if I went in to spend £15 I would come out having spent at least £100! It's a shame, although not surprising, recently their stores seem to be getting a bit shabby, selection is not great and the prices are high. But I am sure they could have propped up their stores with their website if they'd thought about it. Hopefully they'll get a buyout like GAME and save the job losses. Perhaps A&NN Capital can buy them like they did with Waterstones, link the two and develop their online sales to compete with the likes of Amazon.

Well each to their own. Some doctors don't want to learn. Personally I would prefer to see a doctor that does want to learn. I feel learning medicine and continuing to learn and develop in medicine for every day of your career thereafter is a good thing. edited by RuthM on 15/01/2013 All Drs in the UK have to continue to learn, their registration is dependent on having enough CME certificates / points. edited by Ayzzy on 15/01/2013 Well if the bare minimum is good enough for you then so be it. But the NHS is very good at teaching, which is why, when looking for a doctor, I try and find one who is top of their field in the NHS then book to see them privately as on the NHS I would not have a choice and I may have to wait months. I am not insulting the NHS, I am just saying it is nicer to be able to choose. But I was referring to doctors in Dubai in any case and to me medical learning should be a daily thing, not a course or a seminar a few times a year. But it's only someone's life you're playing with.

[b'>[/b'>People must remember this is private medical care you are paying for here so it cannot be compared to the NHS. Comparatively the private care I have received in the UK is vastly superior. That said my family are all health professionals, doctors, dentists, vets, psychologists, radiographers etc. so I have never needed to go to a doctor on a general recommendation as someone in the family always knew who the top doctor was for any issue so perhaps others experience of private health care in the UK are not as favourable. [b'>Actually i have found the NHS far superior to anything abroad and I'd rather have surgery with the NHS then ever in a private hospital. Every private consultant I know in the UK also works in the NHS, unfortunately it is generally at a high level therefore they only get the choicest NHS patients (the complicated and interesting ones). The only difference is that when you go private you are able to choose your consultant, get seen more quickly, book your appointments and surgery at a time of your convenience and they have more time to spend with you. They are the same doctors, you just have more choices! So how can the NHS be better? [b'>[/b'>However I will say that most of the doctors I have spoken to in the UK have told me they would not consider a long term move to Dubai as it is a sure fine way to limit a medical career due to the fact there are little in the way of teaching hospitals here in which to learn, develop and ultimately make a name for yourself. Doctors in the UAE are quick to overprescribe for scans etc. because they get a kick back from the hospitals. Thanks to that I now have two exemptions on my medical so the doctors could line their pockets and rip off insurers. It would not surprise me if they receive the same benefits from prescribing medications. And no doctors do not normally flit from one antibiotic to the other mid course without a confirmed culture. The general rule is prescribe, take culture (if deemed necessary), await results, change if required based on results, antibiotic experimentation is not generally used. I lost all faith in Dubai doctors the last time I visited one with sinusitis and he said it was my wisdom teeth and wanted to refer me to an oral surgeon for x-ray and surgery to which I replied "really, can they cause this much pain from a jar at my mums house in London?" People must remember this is private medical care you are paying for here so it cannot be compared to the NHS. Comparatively the private care I have received in the UK is vastly superior. Oh Dubai doctors what fun. A friend was just prescribed an antibiotic for a viral infection by his doctor out here. It disturbs me deeply. Antibiotics often take 2- 3 days to show an improvement. Bear in mind many symptoms are caused by your immune system not the bacteria itself so even though the bacteria starts being attacked by the antibiotic right away the immune system will take some time respond accordingly and go back down to DEFCON 5 so to speak. A doctor does not normally need to isolate the bacteria with a blood test, they can generally work out what the most probable bacteria is by the symptoms and prescribe accordingly. I had recurrent sinus and chest infections for years before surgery corrected my sinuses and never have a blood test to isolate the bacteria causing the problem. Dubai doctors just seem to love to spend money. However with a severe and persistent infection sometimes a doctor will take a culture to isolate the bacteria and then change the antibiotic based on the culture but antibiotic experimentation is unusual. The only reason I can see switching antibiotics mid course like this without a culture is if the doctor disagreed with the original course and did not want to say anything as it would seem unprofessional. But then the comments are slightly worrying. If it is a virus antibiotics will have no effect whatsoever except to build your child's immunity to antibiotics, not a good thing. It sounds like your daughter has either a bacterial respiratory infection or flu. A high temperature is indicative on infection but you would anticipate the symptoms to be localised. If she has sore inflamed throat, productive cough, aches all over, congestion and other widespread symptoms I would say flu. However if she has for example congestion, producing dark green/yellow/brown mucus, non productive dry cough, some throat discomfort but not inflamed (throat/cough symptoms can show due to post nasal drip) and a very high temperature I would say bacterial infection (you can change these symptoms to chest, throat or ears etc. but should be localised). Obviously if she has a high temperature and severe head pain and/or stiff neck then you need to take her to the emergency room immediately. Hope she gets better soon.

Search isn't working for me unfortunately I just get an error message on all three browsers I have installed on my system. Looks like we may need to stay with the rather unpleasant NOW health as all the others have maternity exclusions for a year as well. I think we shall claim as much as possible for maternity then ditch them, I'll be sure to ask the doctors to do as many tests and scans as they can, rake in the $$$ with these cowboys. Really peeved off, they don't even have results from the MRI on my neck so how they can be slapping on exclusions for that. I broke my little toe last year which I forgot to mention perhaps they should put on another exclusion "the member had an x-ray for an injury to right foot" "no benefit is payable as a result of any disease or disorder related to foot pain or complications thereof." And an exclusion for surgery from 15 years ago which has had no further issue? That's impressive. I will contact Pacific Prime and see what Darren says - thanks for advice.

Not all white gold is made equal! There can be a massive difference in the price of white gold as it is an alloy. It is most commonly a nickel or palladium alloy. Palladium is quite expensive whereas nickel is relatively inexpensive. Therefore cheaper white gold may only be so because of the other alloy parts they are using. Normally it is rhodium plated to give it it's white finish. Every time it needs to be re-plated the removal of the old plating will wear down very slightly the ring itself. White gold is graded: Grade 1 - Colour Value Less than 19 - Good White Does not need to be rhodium plated for long periods Grade 2 - Colour Value 19 to 24.5 - Reasonable White Option to rhodium plate occasionally Grade 3 - Colour Value - 24.5 to 32 - Poor White Frequent rhodium plating needed Grade 1 is typically a palladium alloy, as palladium provides the whitest colour. Palladium is also hypoallergenic. Nickel alloys do not produce such a good colour, but are cheaper and can cause allergies in around 10-15% of people. A nickel allergy is normally developed after prolonged exposure to an item containing nickel. You may not have had an allergy previously. I developed an allergy with some white gold earrings when I was 29, prior to that I had never had a problem with nickel. Now just touching something containing nickel (even just picking something up) can leave me with a rash and itching. Therefore if you do get a nickel alloy, then be sure to have it re-plated frequently do not wait until you can see the plating has worn off. Another option to consider may be platinum. Currently the market value of gold is actually more than the market value of platinum. Platinum jewellery will still be slightly more expensive as it is harder to work with and it is normally 95% pure as opposed to white gold being around 75%. It will grey over time but professional polishing will bring it back up to white.

Aren't UGGs an Australian brand? No they just say that. They're owned by Deckers. TBH I only quoted Uggs because people will have heard of them. I actually don't own any I used to buy Simple Eco Sneaks before they went out of business, who were also owned by Deckers, hence the same sizing. The North Face also uses another sizing conversion a US 9.5 is a UK 7.5 as is Timberland. I just ask for a US 9.5 now when buying a US brand. edited by RuthM on 12/12/2012

Depends on the brand. Nike US 9.5 UK 7 But with Ugg a US 9.5 is a UK 8 - random huh! So around a US 9.5 / EU 40.5 / UK 7 (unless it's an American brand that don't understand UK sizing then UK 8) I can rarely anything here over a US 9, and half sizes are impossible to find. Then they try and put me in mens, which always seem to come up bigger than the comparative women's size and they don't have one small enough! So in between mens smallest and women's biggest size - oh yay. Interesting the number of posters that are around a 39-42 size, perhaps shops here should reconsider their sizing policy.

You must have all had amazing dads. My dad didn't once step foot in my school when I was a kid! Actually that's a lie he picked me up from school once when my mum was sick and the nanny was on leave, I have to say I was really excited it was such a unique event I remember that day well. I'd say do the charity event, they'll be other gymnastics events it's not like the kids are taking their first steps, graduating from college or getting married. Maybe arrange something else to do with the kids, like a special family day out or something. Or video the gymnastics and dad can watch the video with them at home and they can tell him about it.

Ok here goes... I got my mum personal training sessions at the gym (she likes playing tennis but is struggling with the strength side of things), an iPad Mini and a pair of trainers for the gym. I got my gran a subscription to National Geographic, some silk neck scarves and a wood walking stick from a posh walking stick shop in London (picking that out next week). I got my two best friends tickets to Cirque du Soleil and one of them (a guy) a spiderman graphic novel and Aqua di Parma Essenza travel aftershave, the other one (a girl) a Bloomingdales Little Silver (like the Brown but Silver) Bag - she loves the brown one and uses it for her lunches at work, and some Turkish Delight form Bateel. I haven't finished buying for DH yet. I have a list... it is endless! Hornby train stuff (yes seriously), iPad mini, Dunhill Flying Scotsman pen (or any other Dunhill pen), Dunhill cufflinks, Dunhill bespoke briefcase, Dunhill carbon fibre collar stiffeners, Montblanc Patron of the Art pen, history books, law books, dressing gown, socks, pants, undershirts (he has taken to wearing these in Dubai), loungewear, a funny picture book called Underwater Dogs (you should look at this it's hilarious if you like dogs) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Underwater-Dogs-Seth-Casteel/dp/0755364112/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354620066&sr=8-1) and also... Acqua di Parma aftershave, Molton Brown shower stuff, Nespresso coffee maker, Irish linen pocket squares, silk handkerchiefs, cast bronze Labrador bookends made in Ireland, Specialized carbon fibre road bike, sheepskin slippers (cause we're in the UK over Christmas and my mum won't turn the heating on so he might die), Jaeger Le-Coultre watch, Wilson tennis racquet, Specialized cycling shoes and clipless pedals, Smythson pocket diary, Turnbull & Asser work shirts, RL polo shirts, moleskin notebook and finally a Labrador puppy (he put this on his letter to Santa - he's not getting one, he doesn't seem to realise it will grow into another Labrador and then we will have three). I think there's more I just blocked it from my mind, there are many things he wants, Christmas is easy to choose gifts for him, harder to fund them! What I do need is suggestions for things for my mother-in-law - so please keep the ideas coming!

I've heard that DM has a no kill policy and when the shelter is full they wind all the dogs n let them loose in the middle of the desert. What's so wrong with that??? I assume this is sarcasm. Letting dogs loose in the desert seems like a cheap, generally unpleasant and very cruel sure to kill policy. I say anyone letting dogs loose in the desert should be driven out to the desert and dumped there themselves to see how they like it.

I think it's orders over 270 USD and I think that includes postage costs. I think the tax is around 5% plus an admin charge. DHL, FedEX, Aramex and UPS have a deal with customs so things are processed quickly and they will ask for payment on delivery. Things may slip under the radar with Royal Mail/USPS/Emirates Post etc. I don't know. No idea where to order from, Abercrombie Fitch ship here, but that may not be to your taste. edited by RuthM on 06/12/2012

My favourite instance here was when a local stopped us at the vet to pet our Labradors. Then said, "they fight well?" one of our Labs is a retired field trial champion, she fights canvas dummies from the ground and carries them places if that's what he meant. He then pointed to our less than intelligent Lab (the non field trial winning one) who looks a bit dim (we still love him) and said "this one good fighter, my cousin has one like this, he lives in Sharjah, we go to a village out of town to fight them". Fortunately I managed to restrain myself from beating him to death myself as I'm sure there is a law against beating locals even if they are animal abusing *******. Then there was the lady in the pet shop that wanted to buy her Husky puppy small breed puppy food because he didn't like to chew (growing correctly is not important, chewing is not important?!). But he bites her fingers so she wanted a rabies test as she thought he might have rabies?! This was our first year here. Since then I have found it very hard to have a balanced view about pet owners here regardless of their nationality. I assume all are guilty of being bad pet owners until proven otherwise, which is a terrible way to be.

Been to the St Regis. Apart from the fat woman that thought it was nice to sit in the spa topless (hopefully not bottomless - I didn't stay long enough to find out), it was really nice. The facilities are beautiful, they have this fantastic rain shower room. I had two great spa days there, DH had a massage and said it wasn't firm enough but tbh there is only one person in the whole of the UAE that does his massage as he likes it - and we tried spas in Langkawi and HK and he still complained so he just complains a lot.

I've used it dozens of times. I don't know about Manchester Airport. At London Heathrow you go to the travelex desk before checking in and they do it all in one place. I always go with cash refund and get it right away. At Gatwick you go to customs before checking in and get a stamp then after check-in you go to travelex and get the cash. I have occasionally needed to post one and have got the refund, Global Blue have contact details if you don't get the refund within six weeks you can contact them. I always keep a copy of the form if I am posting it. As for those shops. Most shops have the forms, even if the staff don't know it. They often have to do a bit of searching and may need some assistance filling them in (from the customer!). But bear in mind the larger the amount you are claiming the more you will get back. So I do all my shopping in John Lewis or Selfridges (which have concessions for some of the shops you listed). Then before I leave I take all my receipts into the appropriate department store and they put all my shopping on one form, as the % you get back is dependent on how much you spend you get more back this way. It's a shame because I used to love shopping in the individual stores in St James, Bond Street and Kings Road, but for the tax form it is so much easier to suffer the department stores. Here is the Global Blue website that have a list of stores, although I don't think it's a complete list. http://www.global-blue.com Hope this helps. edited by RuthM on 04/12/2012

Wow must have been a great evening. However the royals in the UK don't always have that kind of security. Here are a few tales from the UK. A friend of my dad's was shooting (a German guy about 30 years ago) and every time he shot a bird one of the pickers up sent her dog in to retrieve it. He wanted his dog to get some retrieves in (he had a new dog) so he asked her to stop picking up his birds. She continued to pick up so he yelled at her to stop picking up his birds. At the end of the drive he went to get his birds from her and when he took them she said to him "Do you know who I am?", he didn't recognise her and then finally when prompted by a friend he realised he'd spent the last half hour yelling at the Queen of England! On another occasion my dad was on a driven shoot and Prince Charles turned up. Another another shoot he used to go to was frequented by Prince Edward. Still funny they have that much security at a Gala event but yet hardly any at all where people are walking around with guns!

Most people have their wisdom teeth extracted as modern human mouths are not big enough to manage them. Even those who have the space for wisdom teeth and which are fully erupted they can still be very difficult to clean them due to their location and how the they are closely wedged to other teeth. This sounds as if it could be the case with yours, most commonly they would be extracted to prevent further problems.

Mac will automatically open PDF documents with Preview unless you change the setting. Once you have the document saved on your storage drive CTRL+Click the document and a menu will come up. You can then select 'Open With' -> Adobe Reader. If you want your Mac to always use Adobe Reader for PDF files you can also CTRL+Click then select 'More Info' and an information page will come up. Select the drop down for 'Open With' and Select Adobe Reader then click 'Change All'. From now on all PDF documents should open with Adobe Reader. Two great recipes that my friends go mad for when they come for BBQs: 20g roughly chopped coriander, 6tbsp brown sugar, 4tbsp dark soy sauce, 4tbsp sherry (or apple juice seems to work for Muslim friends), 4 cloves finely chopped garlic Mix everything chuck in plastic bag with chops for 4-24 hours, grill - lovely sweet caramelised lamb chops. 4tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 2tbsp (normally one whole) lime juice, 1tbsp finely chopped garlic, 1.5tsp sea salt, 1tsp ground coriander, 1tsp ground cumin, 0.5tsp ground ginger, 0.5tsp black pepper Whisk the above chuck in plastic bag with lamb chops ensure evenly coated, marinate for 1-2 hours. My favourite is the caramelised ones but then I have a sweet tooth!

We have a Weber Gas Grill. Guests have often commented on how it tastes as good as charcoal. I would not be able to cope with a charcoal grill, we BBQ about 80% of our meals, I do roast beef, teriyaki salmon, pizza anything really on it. I even baked some cakes on it recently when our oven broke (although they were a little smokey!). I'd say if you are going to use it frequently then gas is the way to go but if you just intend to BBQ on it occasionally and stick to basics like burgers and steaks it's probably not worth the investment.

Couple of questions sorry if they seem very basic I wasn't sure exactly what you have done so far: 1) Are you using a Mac or an iPad? 2) Do you have Preview in your Applications folder? 4) Have you installed Adobe Reader or just downloaded it? (check to see if it is in your Applications folder) 5) Is the document saved to your computer's storage or are you trying to open it from a web page? 6) If it is stored on your computer have you tried Ctrl+Click on document and 'Open With' either Preview or Adobe Reader?

Sounds like RuthM does not have experience of the senior schools here in Dubai, several comments are completely unsubstantiated. In my experience my kids who were at a good independent, selective day school in the UK and moved here in years 7 & 10 have achieved exactly the results I would have expected had they stayed in the UK and are now at the same universities and on the same courses as their UK contempories. The biggest difference is that they have gained a non judgmental view of people and find it much easier to socialise across the board than those who went to 'Clarendon' schools. Just do your research on the schools here, you need to visit them to see which suits your children best. I think it is a fantatastic place to be educated. HTH [i'>The biggest difference is that they have gained a non judgmental view of people and find it much easier to socialise across the board than those who went to 'Clarendon' schools.[/i'> Who is coming out with unsubstantiated comments now? My family were educated at some of Britain's best public schools and we have friends from all backgrounds, trades and professions. But yet here we are again with another unsubstantiated comment about the public school educated not being in touch with 'real' people. Perhaps we can follow the trend by having a go at bankers next?! Back to schools. The only absolute comment I could find that I made regarding schools themselves is that they are mostly for profit (a few aren't). From a financial point of view good independent schools in the UK will have more money to spend per pupil than in Dubai as they do not have shareholders to pay and also receive many charitable donations from parents and former students. Sending your child to a not for profit school means every penny you pay goes towards that child's education. Plus more from other donations the school receives. In the US they have the Eight Schools Association (their equivalent of Clarendon) whose fees are circa 50k per annum but yet they spend circa 70k per child. The shortfall made up from donations. More funding means more extra curricular activities, greater selection of subjects and smaller class sizes. Which are important as large class sizes may work out well for the majority but for a few children who are more academically advanced or for others that are falling behind they can be a disaster. Moreover smaller class sizes allow more time for pupils to spend learning which means instead of learning by rote they can debate and analyse more within class. Certain things should not be for profit, mainly education, healthcare and public services. You only need to look at the disaster that was Railtrack in the UK to see that. Education should come before profit and never the other way round. As previously advised I would suggest that if you can you do make a visit to some schools before moving out here.
