If he is moving from the states there are a few US brands he may recognise out here. Ethan Allen certainly do a 'California King' which is an extra long bed size (213cm) for tall people. There are also Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. And So to Bed... (UK brand) go up to 7' but not sure what their lengths are. I would be less inclined to buy a custom bed size as it restricts being able to buy fitted sheets, I believe the Cal King is a standard size in the US. That said if he wants to buy anything that is not a local brand and he is shipping a container, he may be better to ship all that he can from the US as it is so much cheaper there.

I have used both, now just use Bobbi Brown the loose mineral powder. Which Bobbi Brown do you use? I am considering changing though, I have heard good things about Jane Iredale and did a makeup trial last time I was in Canada, it's just so difficult to get here. I also like Laura Mercier, they do a fairly big mineral makeup range. The makeup artist for my wedding used their normal range which I was really happy with, but I am going to try a Laura Mercier mineral makeup trial at Fenwicks when I go to the UK at the end of the month.

By the same standards; I presume you lovely ladies will be cancelling your shop 'n' ship accounts and buying local from now on? I think we're talking manufactured and frankly the UAE doesn't manufacture much of anything (although we have some hangers from here). Now for a long post! I make a conscious effort to not buy products made in China where possible but it is not easy. So many manufacturers are moving production to China. I prefer to buy Made in UK but will look for anywhere made in the Western world and Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Not only because you have no idea the conditions workers in the Far East have to work under but also because I believe the western economy needs a boost right now so what better way to help than to buy from home. Just in Dubai we have a sofa from Crate & Barrel, made in North Carolina, US, Ethan Allen desk and chair made in US. Pans from Lagostina, made in Italy, Knives from Shun made in Japan. Scott Zwiesel glasses from Pottery Barn made in Germany. Tableware from Crate & Barrel made in Italy, tableware from Denby, made in England, we wanted Wedgwood for a formal set but much of their manufacturing is now moved to China so we are now looking at Nikko which are made in Japan. B&O stereo made in Denmark, Pioneer TV made in Japan, And So To Bed… bed made in Italy, we are looking at ordering more bedroom furniture from Simon Horn which are made in England. Sadly we bought some furniture form Pottery Barn and were disappointed to find it was made in China. I have a Medi-Ball made in Australia and a Zsig badminton net made in UK. DH buys his shirts from Turnbull & Asser and shoes from Crockett and Jones which are made in England. Our camera bags are both Billingham and made in UK and we have some Zeiss binoculars (inherited) which are not just made in Germany but made in West Germany! In the UK we have in storage and stowed at my mothers for visits. Oak dining set made in France (the brand name escapes me but most French oak is awesome - especially farmhouse style). More Denby tableware (I kind of ended up with 5 sets, bit of an addiction!). Barbour wax jackets, made in England. Johnstons cashmere scarves made in Scotland. Le Chameau wellies made in France, don't kid yourself with those fashionable Hunters (which are made in China) Le Chameau are the way to go, my father bought them in the 60's used them all his life and would not touch Hunter. (I must confess, I did once buy some Hunters, I was taken in by the purple neoprene lining but Le Chameau are so much better!). Two shotguns made by William Evans in England and a third shotgun made by Browning in Belgium (before they relocated their manufacturing to China and other places). I can't express how upset I am Apple products are made in China but still can't help buying them. :-( And we are currently looking at ordering a Loewe (Germany) TV and Duresta (England) sofas in the not to distant future, and I am hoping for some Dubarry's (Portugal, formally Ireland) when we visit the UK at Christmas (if only DH checked this forum!). Perhaps I should have mentioned, buying things not made in China is kind of a obsession of mine. However even with my efforts I still find tons of my clothing is made in China, Thailand, Indonesia etc. I have a bit of a summary of the best places to go to for certain items, in order of preferance. For wool go to Scotland, for audio electronics England or Denmark (if you have cash to burn), for Plasma TVs Japan for other electronics Germany. For kitchenware US, Italy or France, for knives Japan, Germany, maybe France, for furniture England, France, Italy or US, for bedding Italy. For shirts England or Ireland, for suits England or Italy, for shoes England, Italy or Spain. For wellies France, for wax jackets England, for guns England, Italy or Spain, For pilates equipment, Australia. I would love to hear other peoples opinions and also ideas for more types of items. For those interested here is a list of some manufacturers I buy from and what I know of their production details, any corrections/updates gratefully received and wold love some more brands to add. Although I do have a spreadsheet (somewhere) which is a more complete list but it needs updating (one of my summer chores whilst in the UK): Home Denby - Made in Denby, England Nikko - Made in Japan Wusthof - Made in Germany Shun - Made in Japan Lagostina - Made in Italy All-Clad - Made in US (but sometimes China so beware) Mauviel - Made in France Le Crueset - Made in France (stoneware made in China) Laguiole - Should be made in France Crate & Barrel - Made in US Pottery Barn - Made in China And So To Bed… - Made in Italy (some made in Philippines) Simon Horn - Made in England Duresta - Made in England Duresta - Made in England Fou Furnishings - Made in Italy (some lines) and organic Ethan Allen - Made in US and Mexico (rumours of some stuff coming form China now) AGA - Made in Shropshire, England Falcon - Made in UK Smeg - Made in Italy Weber - Made is US (some products made in China, notably the Spirit line Miele - Made in Germany (some lines made in China) Sebo - Made in Germany Clothing & Accessories Crockett & Jones - Made in Northampton, England Turnbull & Asser - Made in Gloucester, England Thomas Pink - Very few lines made in Ireland the rest made in Thailand Johnstons - Made in Elgin, Scotland Le Chameau - Made in France Hunter - Now made in China Dubarry - Now made in Portugal LK Bennett - Made in Spain Smartwool Socks - Made in US (some line made in Korea and China) Mulberry - Made in England (however 70% of manufacturing now outsourced to Turkey and China) Longchamp - Made in France (however many now made in China) Swaine & Adeney Brigg - Made in Cambridge, England Zimmerli - Made in Switzerland Falke - Made in Sauerland, Germany Sunspel - Made in England (some products outsourced) Pantherella - Made in Leicester, England Barbour - Made in Derbyshire, England (some products outsourced to Eastern Europe, Indonesia and India) John Smedley - Made in Derbyshire, England Derek Rose - Some products made in England Dunhill - Heritage line made in England, shoes made in Italy (need confirmation) other products need confirmation Mont Blanc - Made in Germany Billingham - Made in UK Electronics Bang & Olufsen - Made in Denmark, although some now in Czech Republic and some parts are imported form China, Taiwan or Korea (they use Samsung a lot) Loewe - Made in Germany Bowers & Wilkins - Made in UK (some lines) Pioneer Televisions - Made in Japan (Panasonic are now) ARCAM - Made in UK (some lines made in the Far East) Meridian - Made in Cambridge, England B&W - Made in Worthing, England and Denmark (some lines made in China) Leica - Made in Germany (the Panasonic rebadged lines are Made in Japan/China) Other Mediball - Made in Australia Beretta - Made in Italy William Evans - Bespoke made in England, other lines made in Italy or Spain and finished in England <em>edited by RuthM on 08/07/2012</em>

We had lunch at the seafood place in the downstairs of Burj Arab. It was very good, felt a bit more special than Pier Chic although the setting of Pier Chic is fantastic but really you have to be outdoors to enjoy it which you won't be in August. We also went with a seven year old and they were great with her, there was a lovely childrens menu too. It was for lunch though not dinner, and it was expensive close to 4000 dhs for four of us plus one child (although our friends ordered the seafood platter each which was twice the price of our main and enormous!). As for vintage watch, I would be inclined to contact a dealer in London and get one sent out. If you haven't got a specific brand in mind Rolex (obviously) have good resale value, Patek are possibly the best watches but Jaeger are also very good and substantially cheaper (they say Patek watchmakers buy Jaeger watches). You could also try Vacheron or maybe Audemars. Avoid IWC and Breitling (although we have three) as they don't use in house movements unless it's a special edition. <em>edited by RuthM on 08/07/2012</em>

DH company switched to them and so far not happy. They only cover 10 physio sessions in a year. I had a back injury that recurred six weeks after the initial injury and was worse the second time round. Then couldn't get any treatment at all for it. Worried about the maternity now, we are planning for a baby and don't want to switch insurers because of the exemptions.

You can drive a hire car on a tourist visa with your UK licence (just make sure your UK residency is still valid). Otherwise perhaps your NZ licence with passport. You won't be able to buy a car until you have residency and as soon as your UAE visa comes in you should get your UAE licence.

With the medical insurance 'time period' - the majority of medical insurance policies which cover maternity do not allow you to make a maternity related claim within the first few months of the policy, I have recently researched this and only found one which allowed you to claim immediately, one even had a 2 year wait. And also medical insurance provided by companies in Dubai does not have to cover maternity by law (unlike Abu Dhabi) so be sure that yours does and that you are able to make claims immediately. I think her DH has checked this as it was one of the first things I mentioned when he said they were moving out. Our last insurance had a six month wait in period but our current insurance does not I think many big companies have so many staff on their insurance they are less likely to have a wait in period. Ofc I could be in the same predicament soon if things go to plan and then my DH changes jobs!!! Watch this space! I'll get my DH to ask his PA tomorrow (she's Arabic speaker) to find out about what to do if you give birth early without a residence visa. Realistically though they must have some kind of allowances for holidaymakers where such things happen. <em>edited by RuthM on 07/07/2012</em>

Never wear high heels is the foremost thing, consider trying some barefoot shoes to try and strengthen the feet but don't wear them all the time as you will need support in the meantime until the muscles have developed (a podiatrist should be able to prescribe some supportive orthotics). Next calf stretch every day, without fail. A good way is to get a 1/2 round foam roller (semi-circular) and put it against the wall. Facing the wall put your foot on the roller so it's at an angle and lean into the wall to stretch the calves. Also use a full round roller to massage the calves (rolling along the calves). (I normally put the half roller right up against the wall for the stretch) You can also stretch the calves off a step but take care not to bounce as it is very easy to injure yourself this way. Otherwise you can massage the actual plantar using a tennis ball, a TP massage ball or if really brave a cricket/lacrosse ball. http://www.livestrong.com/article/547480-how-to-stretch-your-calf-with-adhesions/ http://www.livestrong.com/article/388241-plantar-fascittis-exercises/ http://www.livestrong.com/article/438209-rehabilitation-for-plantar-fasciitis/ Lastly if you don't mind spending a bit of money or insurance will cover it, the best thing you can do is get a proper sports massage on the calves and plantars to try and release them. Up and Running has proper rehabbers, also they will also be able to show you how to stretch and foam roll properly. <em>edited by RuthM on 07/07/2012</em>

Don't Panic!!! My DH came out on a tourist visa and worked on it for four months (it was an internal transfer). His company were moving from non free zone to free zone so couldn't process his visa until their new free zone company was set up. It was an internal transfer though and if caught you can get a fine/ban (although nearly everyone does it). However there should be no reason why he can't come on a tourist visa and not work while waiting for his employment visa to come through, just when you arrive if they ask purpose of your visit say vacation. See if your holiday insurance covers you for emergencies this late in pregnancy, by the time your holiday cover expires your visa should be in and full cover can start. I know your DH said there is no waiting clause in the employment medical cover. Bear in mind you are arriving right at beginning of Ramadan so things will move bit slower then and the place is going to be deserted. On another note, our place is empty for two weeks from the date you arrive, if you won't get temp accommodation until your husbands visa is in you can use it (have to check with my DH first). I can't believe you guys are moving so quickly but once you get out here I'm sure you'll be able to relax and enjoy yourselves!

While you're at it perhaps do something to stop dog fighting? Last time we were at the vet a guy there with his falcon started saying how nice our dogs were and we were quite flattered until he asked were they good fighters? (they're Labradors). He then proceeded to tell us how his cousin has one just like our boy and he is a very good fighter. I attempted to explain to him that Labradors are trained to retrieve things hence are mostly very soft mouthed so frankly hopeless at fighting anything (more through fear that he was going to follow us home and steal our dogs that anything else) but it seemed I was not getting anywhere. Then another dog came in and one of ours barked so he started cheering - luckily DH stopped me before I got us both arrested and deported. Rather than prosecuting animal torture in the region it may be better to educate people (perhaps in schools) that animals are living creatures and have their own personalities and feelings. I think perhaps the incidents of unkindness to animals here (particularly dogs) is due to ignorance more than there being a load of budding sociopaths. That said this is a particularly disgusting case of torture and something should be done about it so signed and shared but I hope people will think of the bigger picture here to try and prevent these things from happening in the first place.

You'll need to create a sun and shade area within the tub on the balcony, in the sun area place a large fairly smooth rock that has a dry area he can bask on. The water should be deep enough that he can easily turn over in it (width of shell minimum), otherwise he can get caught upside down and drown. For food a terrapin this size should be an omnivore by now. It is best to get a good quality complete terrapin pellet diet and supplement it with some greens, possibly fruit if he will take it (although only a little), he will likely relish fresh raw meat and fish or the dried shrimps you can get from the pet shop but in moderation or he'll start turning his nose up at everything that isn't meat! It is often best to feed in a separate container and wait until he has pooped before putting him back in the main tub which will help to keep it clean. Just out of interest OP is it a male or female? Males have a longer tail and long claws whereas the females have a short tail and shorter claws. Females are bigger than males.

One that size will most likely need a pond, they are really messy (poop alot) although lovely to look at and fun to watch. I think people buy them when they are tiny and then when they get big they dump them, we found one in our garden a few years ago. You could possibly keep it on a balcony in a very large tub, but frequent water changes will be required or a sturdy filter.

DH wants to do some swimming lessons over the summer. He can already swim but wants to improve his stroke and learn tumble turns and butterfly (which he has not done before). There are a few RYA courses he would like to do next year and a lifesaving course so he also wants to be a strong swimmer for that as well as be able to swim laps for fitness. Can anyone recommend a good swim instructor who comes to the ranches, or swimming lessons elsewhere. He would prefer someone come to him but if it is the difference between a really good instructor elsewhere or an average instructor that comes to him then he'd probably prefer to travel to them. <em>edited by RuthM on 05/07/2012</em>

We stayed at and got married at the Mount Nelson (they also filmed parts of Invictus here). My grandparents stayed here over forty years ago when they went to visit my parents as well! The hotel is quite old, full of character. It has beautiful gardens and is in a lovely setting with the backdrop of Table Mountain. The spa is great, the afternoon tea is great, the dinners were good but the breakfast is maybe just average-good. It is walking distance to downtown, we walked to the Jewish museum, District Six museum and many other places from here. As it is an old hotel some of the rooms can be quite small, although we had a suite which was huge! Another hotel I would recommend outside of Cape Town is Asara. It's in the winelands and is great for a relaxing break. http://www.asara.co.za/ http://www.mountnelson.co.za/ If you are interested in restaurants I can recommend La Colombe, Beluga and Sevruga. When we were there we found accommodations could be quite expensive but food was really cheap and generally very good. http://www.constantia-uitsig.com/pages/events/la-colombe.php/ http://www.beluga.co.za/ http://www.sevruga.co.za

They make me slightly afraid. I contacted them for some information on their MBAs and since then they do nothing but spam me every day. In my opinion no decent school should have to tout for business, that said I have read some positive feedback on blogs/forums for them. Hult I believe is quite a new and not all that well known school yet so perhaps that explains all the advertising. DH is leaning towards London Business School which is an established school and they do an Executive MBA out here which is ranked quite high globally. At an executive level the business school you attend goes a long way. Unless you are following a specialty subject that the school you choose is known for it is best to attend the best business school you can. It also depends on the course you wish to attend full time, part time, MBA, Global MBA, eMBA etc. The GMAT average score for LBS is around 650-700 (depending on course) but only 570-610 for Hult. It is probably best to research the schools and courses on websites like FT, Economist, Forbes and Business Week to get a clearer picture of what would be best for you. http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/global-mba-rankings-2012 http://www.economist.com/whichmba/full-time-mba-ranking <em>edited by RuthM on 21/06/2012</em>

Thanks for the feedback. We're in an Alvorada B2 (the larger 4 bed) at the moment which I think is 4020sqft. DH wanted a B1 (3884sqft) but there weren't any available when we last moved. I am now leaning towards a Mirador Type 16 3458sqft or a Palmera Type A 2936sqft, the Alma is bigger inside than the Palmera and newer but I am not sure about the garden size, we're going to try and view some in any case to see what we think. Do you know if the Palmera's have showers in any of the bathrooms or are they all baths?

When you get here go and view some villas in Arabian Ranches, Mirador. It has a lovely green avenue, trees overhanging with Spanish style villas. I am sure there are many other places in Dubai like it but it always makes me think of Europe a little when I am there! As for sinus reactions, I have chronic sinusitis (three surgeries and on Nasonex for the last ten years). When I came to Dubai three years ago, I can say it only deteriorated when indoors with the air con on. But Nasonex keeps it under control.

DH and I are looking to downgrade our villa, we were having the villa paid for directly (so might as well max the allowance), but may now be getting a cash allowance instead so thought we'd save some money. Our basic needs are a reasonable sized garden (we have two large dogs), 3 bedrooms and a further room downstairs that needs to be enclosed to be used as a study as he works from home a lot and has far too many books to be scattered around. So I have narrowed it down to (in decreasing size order) Alvorada B1 (we are in a B2 atm the B1 was what we originally wanted but there weren't any available when we last moved). Mirador Type 16, Palmera Type A or Alma Type 1E or 2E. I was wondering if anyone was or has stayed in a Palmera or an Alma? What are the gardens like and are there any with reasonable sized gardens? I am particularly keen on an Alma due to the proximity of the centre (we only have one car) but DH says the gardens are too small and not private enough for the dogs to run about. Any feedback would be much appreciated, thanks. :-)

I just stopped taking the pill and had forgotten why I started taking it. Massive breakouts, constipation, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, waking up sweating, leg cramps, agonising back ache that seems to irritate my herniated disc even more, diarrhea, migraine and extreme fatigue. People say the pill is bad for you but surely it has to be better than this! I don't know about tiredness but for me paracetamol doesn't touch the pain. Diclofenac on the other hand takes the edge off. Diclofenac plus paracetamol is even better, in the UK I would throw some codeine into the mix as well (Solpadeine Max + Volteren) and could on occasion actually go to work! I was reading about it earlier today apparently light exercise, and NSAIDS are reported to help. As well as bedrest with a hot water bottle for the first day or two. I loved it when the doctor said this when I was working in the UK - erm you want me to take 2 days off work every month? and... you think I'll still have a job next time you see me? As for the fatigue, I have no idea, when I first had problems as a teenager they checked me for anemia perhaps that's worth looking at just in case?

We take them out in the desert along Al Qudra road. Just follow the road out towards Bab Al Shams. After AR/Studio City roundabout go over the viaduct then follow the road out towards the desert. On the second roundabout after the viaduct there's a cattle grid on the left and some open gates. Turn left down there and drive as far as you want then pull over and walk the dogs, there are some bins by the gates so you can drop off any waste on your way out. Just watch for off roaders and that you aren't too close to any campers if your dogs have a tendency to snack on peoples picnics! Our vet also told us there is a spot past Studio City, she said to follow the road out from there eventually it ends in some undeveloped desert where she takes her dogs. We haven't tried it yet but are planning on taking a look soon. MBCO is at the Ranches main centre, we've also not had any problems taking the dogs to Costa Coffee there as well.

And ironically today there was what looked like a professional photographer in MoE with three ladies dressed in above the knee skirts and blouses that barely covered their shoulders modelling as if they were casually chatting while holding lots of designer shopping bags (presumably advertising for the DSF). I agree that people should dress respectfully but it would help if the media could reflect this in their advertising.

I'm very tempted! I was looking at the Macbook comparison chart and in terms of performance, do you think that price difference is justified (aside from the display)? The new 2012 MBP and MBA with higher specification are cheaper than the old 2011 lower specification models. I assume you mean the retina display MBP. In terms of package I personally think they are great, but then I use my laptop for gaming and photo editing so the retina display (especially for Diablo 3 and Aperture which are retina ready) will be amazing and having flash instead of a HDD will be a nice speed increase for loading programs. To give you an idea I was intending on ordering a 15" (or 17") MBP with a hi-res screen upgrade and a 512GB SSD which is now with the new 2012 MBP pricing AED 12,999 or £2,599 from UK. The new 2012 retina MBP with equivalent specification (except no optical drive) is AED 11,499 or £2,299. As I rarely use an optical drive and have a drive available for sharing on my iMac this is better for me. Ironically the only thing putting me off another MBP was the weight, I have the 17" model and DH has the MBA which I have been most envious of with the weight and slimness but for me the screen is just a little too small for MMORPGs. So the lighter weight, new cooling system and slimmer design is just an added bonus! In fact I almost feel like Apple read my mind when they made this machine. However if you simply want a lighter MBP, are not fussed about the display and flash storage and unlikely to utilise the higher specification then it will probably be a waste of money. It is shame they are not offering the MBP as a slim version without the more expensive display and storage, this I can imagine would be very popular, but then the original MBP design would likely become obsolete very quickly!

Not familiar with these, but are they just the same as a stripping comb? Similar yes, but not all stripping combs are made equal. We used a Mars stripping comb on our Spaniel back in the UK which was great but I do find the Furminator easier to use on our Labs. Honestly though I like to use a combination of the two for added fur removal!

I really want the new MacBook Pro with retina display but I am still dependent on an ethernet hookup and I just cannot justify that price. The price is high, but that said it has 256GB/512GB flash memory and a display like that will fetch a premium. If you upgrade the MacBook Pro to a SSD of similar capacity it actually works out more expensive than the retina MBP (although SSD is likely more expensive than flash but flash is not practical to upgrade). With regard to ethernet they do a TB to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor, I think it's just too thin for a Ethernet port. I've been saving and waiting for a year for this laptop to land and hope to have one by the end of the summer :-)

If any ladies are thinking of buying a new Apple MacBook Air or Pro please note the prices have been reduced on the NEW 2012 models. This was done by Apple and is not a special deal or offer. Old models are still being sold in some places at the older higher prices (Apple did not reprice old models). The new prices can be found on the Apple website and are actually a quite significant saving (not quite as low as US prices but getting there!). When purchasing look for the 2012 model not 2011. The pricing differs as follows MacBook Air 11" 64GB 1.6Ghz 2011 model AED 4399 1.7Ghz 2012 model AED 3999 11" 128GB 1.6Ghz 2011 model AED 5399 1.7Ghz 2012 model AED 4499 13" 128GB 1.7Ghz 2011 model AED 5799 1.8Ghz 2012 model AED 4799 13" 256GB 2011 1.7Ghz model AED 6999 1.8Ghz 2012 model AED 5999 Also upgraded graphics Intel 4000 and USB 3.0. MacBook Pro 13" 2.4Ghz 2011 model AED 5399 2.5Ghz 2012 model AED 4799 13" 2.8Ghz 2011 model AED 6799 2.9Ghz 2012 model AED 5999 15" 2.2Ghz 2011 model AED 8299 2.3Ghz 2012 model AED 7299 15" 2.4Ghz 2011 model AED 9799 2.6Ghz 2012 model AED 8999 17" 2.4Ghz 2011 model AED 10899 Discontinued, if you want a 17" buy now or consider the new 15" Retina which has a fantastic 2880x1880 screen. Also upgraded graphics Intel 4000 and new NVIDA cards and USB 3.0. So beware of special deals on older machines as you could well find a new updated machine at a lower price than these deals or negotiate hard for an older machine to ensure you really are getting a good deal. The MacBook Air and Pro are showing immediate availability on the Apple Store website whilst the MacBook Pro Retina is showing 3-4 weeks for availability. <em>edited by RuthM on 14/06/2012</em>

Looking at the online pricing for iStyle (Premium Reseller) who still has the 2011 MacBook Airs against Apple Store UAE who has the new 2012 MacBook Airs it would seem there has been a cut locally as suggested would be by Apple. 11" 64GB 2011 AED 4399 2012 AED 3999 11" 128GB 2011 AED 5399 2012 AED 4499 13" 128GB 2011 AED 5799 2012 AED 4799 13" 256GB 2011 AED 6999 2012 AED 5999 Assuming iStyle are selling at official Apple prices this is indeed a significant cut in price, more than the $100 suggested at WWDC. I have also noticed the price discrepancy between UK and UAE has widened with the MBP updates making buying locally a much bigger saving. But if you are looking to buy a MacBook Air next week ensure you don't get sold one of the old models (unless they are doing a fantastic deal). iStyle are offering an AED 400 gift voucher with the old MBAs, this is a terrible offer being that you will actually get an outdated machine and it will still cost you more! So you know what you are looking for the new model has Intel HD Graphics 4000 processor the old had the 3000 and USB 3.0 the old had 2.0. It also has a faster processor 1.6 up to 1.7 on 11" and 1.7 up to 1.8 on 13". All models across the range have 4GB of RAM as standard now. The model numbers you are looking for are MD223LL/A, MD224LL/A, MD231LL/A, MD232LL/A. The Apple online store UAE which also offers custom builds/upgrades seems to have the new ones in stock. http://store.apple.com/ae/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_air/select

You are doing the right thing. The more problems he solves the better he will get at maths. It just takes some children longer. If he is struggling with solving them at all, he may have lost his confidence so perhaps go back a step and get him to work on simpler problems which he can solve and enjoy solving to build his confidence before working on more difficult ones. Make sure on the simple ones he is doing every single step to solve them and not skipping steps as he will need this grounding for when they become more difficult. When I did my 16+ maths I was quite bad to begin with, because I had skipped steps in basic problems. But I bought some workbooks and did every single problem thoroughly from start to finish, starting with even the easy ones I knew how to do and then got 98% in the exam. The more problems he solves the better he will get, practice will help.

When I saw that last awful place was gone, I was hoping for a Wagamamas... but oh well. Shakesphere's is okay we've never had cold food or service problems. Really don't like Al Arrab, the staff there are awful, a little while ago one of them stood practically on top of me he was so close, while a visiting friend was looking at the menu. I even said to my friend, "wow would be nice for some personal space", followed by "this guy is like standing really like close, it's kinda creepy" after he didn't get the hint I vowed never to go there. We prefer MBCO for breakfast though, although the food is not great (but improving) we can take the dogs and it's their morning treat at the weekend after a desert run. Then the staff want their photo's taken with the dogs to show how tough they are (the dogs are sleeping in most pictures) that adds to the fun! Now if we could ditch Al Arrab, Pizza Hut and Burger King and get Paul's, Wagamamas and a less creepy Lebanese or even a nice pizza place I'd be happy.

Just noticed she was 17 so the whole idea of boarding school went out the window. Counseling will only help if she wants it to, you could get a full psychological evaluation to ensure there is not an underlining problem but that being all clear (and I would not trust one here as a problem means more money for doctors out here), then you have two options. Take her out of school refuse to pay the fees, save the money and tell her to get a job, don't give her any money so she has none to socialise with. Or lump the fees realise they're probably going to be wasted and save up even more money to pay for a crammer in a year or so when she gets her act together. You can send her to a crammer like Cambridge Tutors (in the UK) to get her A-Levels (they do one year GCSE resits as well if necessary). If she has already taken the A-Levels chances are she can do a short resit course, otherwise she can do 18m-2y full course. http://www.ctc.ac.uk/page/default.asp?title=Home&pid=1

Once you've had mac, there's no going back. Yes the hardware may not be better than other cheaper brands (although I disagree apple certainly do some of the nicest screens). The most important thing with a mac is that the operating system is 'designed' to fit the specific hardware and viceversa. OSX works seamlessly and in my nine years of mac ownership I have never had any problems. In my years of windows ownership prior to that (including VAIOs) I had endless issues and they are so so slow, I had the unfortunate experience of working in IT support and having to use Windows at work and would often bring my mac in to fix a networking problem. You can get office home edition for the mac for around £90-100 but if you are not concerned about compatibility you could use pages and numbers which will cost a lot less. Prior to owning a mac I confess that I just installed Linux on my windows machine at home, I hate Windows that much! Although I do have Windows installed on my mac, but just for gaming and testing websites/programmes. I still have my first ever PowerBook 12" and it still works and is still awesome! Just so you know the apple laptop range is currently overdue for a refresh so check http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ to advise the best time to buy, in fact the apple store is down now so maybe they are updating! If you must have Windows then I suggest IBM (do they still make laptops?), Toshiba or at the cheaper end of the scale HP, but please consider a mac and have a long and happy life loving your laptop and not wanting to throw it against the wall!

Oh don't get me started on phone calls. Last year MIL went on a three week holiday. DH had to travel for work a few days before she got back (and he had some really stressful jobs at that time 80+hrs a week everything going wrong type) he went to four different countries in three weeks with no weekends. He finally was back in Dubai for a weekend. Tried to call his mother who then gave him a mouthful because she hadn't spoken to him for nearly six weeks and he was such a bad son blah blah blah. I had to persuade him to call her as he was traveling again the next day and very tired (regretted it when he did). She actually reduced him to tears (he was already tired and very stressed). I sent her an email politely advising her that he is working very hard and is very tired and stressed and giving her his mobile number, FaceTime and skype IDs and suggesting if she hasn't heard from him she can still give him a call anytime she likes. I even bought her an iPad for Christmas last year. The response I got was a mouthful back. She does call him now, once a year, on his birthday. MILs, who needs them? <em>edited by RuthM on 09/06/2012</em>

I used to work for Blockbuster video in the UK. If you had a balance on your account they would try to phone you three times then put it onto the debt collectors. People would get low credit scoring because they owed 50p in late fees for a kids movie they returned a day late.

oh i see....but it is difficult for people who don't live here to understand the postal arrangements... But she was categorically told to use the PO Box. For the last two years she has been using the PO Box. Then we moved last September (only 100m up the road) and for some reason which I cannot fathom she decided to use the villa address! &lt;big sigh&gt;

I get my lashes tinted then use clear mascara. Not sure where to get them tinted here though. Need a therapist you trust with dye that close to your eyes. <em>edited by RuthM on 09/06/2012</em>

why would you have given anyone your villa address in the first place ? none of our family have a clue where we live !! and i agree Simples - very difficult to describe the lack of postal system to people in the UK... hope OP's husband gets his things...my father insists on putting cash in our birthday cards - so far nothing's ever gone missing but i don't rest until they all arrive !! We gave her the address as she flew out with Etihad last time she visited and had the chauffeur drive thing. Thanks for all the responses I'm going to send DH to Karama post office tomorrow to see if it's there.

You may be able to acclimatize it to the dog. Our dog chases cats but not our cat. We put our kitten in our study and put a pet/child gate at the door. After a few days the dog who could see the kitten got used to it. The kitten could get in and out of the room (through the bars) but the dog could not, giving the kitten a safe haven to always go to. Now they get on fine (eight years on), that said the dog still chases other cats which our cat uses to her advantage (teasing other cats and letting them chase her to our garden where the dog then sees then off!). It may be worth a try if you want to.

Going on what DH likes (he loves Aqua Di Gio)... For work he likes Aqua Di Parma Colonia, Assoluta, Intensa. They are quite citrusy but also a bit woody/spicy. For evening he likes the Essenza which is a bit more musky. Aqua Di Parma are a proper perfumers rather than a designer brand that labels perfume, they also do some lovely shaving sets. For weekend he likes Polo Blue or Aqua Di Gio and for the gym he takes Chanel Allure Sport. And men complain about women with their makeup! You can always try this website for some ideas: http://www.basenotes.net/fragrancedirectory/ I might DH on the Issey Miyake, thanks for the idea, which one is it? It's his birthday tomorrow and I too have left it to the last minute!

For steak there is Asado at the Palace although whether they have an outside area in summer you'll have to ask. When they do they have a lovely view of the burj and fountains, although not a close up view, but personally I love the tranquil setting out of the hustle and bustle. In the souk there is an Italian Urbano that has very close views. Lastly I think Bice, the seafood place upstairs has a fountain view as well.
