The dr just reco'ed a spoonful of honey a day for my toddler and said it is a good nutritional supplement and recent studies have shown that it is more effective than cough syrup for treating coughs in babies.

Forgive me my naivete...we've just moved and from somewhere there were "designated DH holidays". That too in a country where DH rights were very well protected. So I was just wondering what the system here is...

The most stylish one I saw was at ORDNING&REDA at DIFC. Tavola at Mercato has some quite functional ones.

We're using the ones from Better Life. Available at MOE for Dhs100. The Eureka Forbes man who fitted the Aquaguard tried to sell me the Swiss ones they carry for Dhs450...passed. Too early to know whether they are helping...

My favourite product for whites is White Brite followed by Napisan. Both are soaking products. We soak overnight then put things in the washing machine. For stains I like Shout with the brush applicator and the Beckmannns range. I find them more effective than Vanish. For small stains on whites the Clorox bleach pen is also good.

We had a Philips 4-slice in our service apt and I was also very impressed with how time saving it is so bought the same when we moved. I saw Russell Hobbs at Carrefour but found the look and feel a little tinny. The Cuisinart is lovely but expensive and in our home toasters always have a limited life! I finally tracked down the same Philips - it is available at their Al Diyfah Road showroom in Satwa near Jumeirah and their main store in Ras al Khor. In case Satwa does not have it they will get it within 48 hours from Ras Al khor so you can call them up to check before going.

Tucks medicated towelettes - huge help post-delivery. Dark chocolate which I ate during labour - got expensive Valronha one so felt good :). Disposable cotton granny pants - great to throw away. Socks - feet were so cold during labour and useful in room later too. Towel hairband to keep hair off my face during labour. Chocolates to gift staff and to serve visitors. Camera. Camomile tea for myself and visitors. Magazines to read in room. Change of clothes for DH in case he will stay with you and you go into labour unexpectedly. I had a big bag...and my DH was coming back with stuff every time he went home :)

I did not deliver here but both were choices where I did. I did not get an enema and did not poop during either, despite having just eaten dinner a few hours earlier. I walked to the loo to empty my bladder (that too with a monitor on coz I was bleeding fresh blood and they could not figure out why) then when I had an epidural a little later they suggested a catheter, which I was OK with. It was very much during labour. I'd only add one comment - defi make a birthing plan but be prepared for the unexpected and don't be too set on it. I say this after learning the hard way. After my prenatal classes I was keen not to get an epidural too early as they can delay labour. I also delayed going to the hospital as much as possible to stay active at home. I reached the hospital and when I finally asked for my epidural I found out that the anaesthetist who worked wth my ob-gyn did not live onsite and it was a foggy night so he took longer than I'd expected. When I finally had my epidural it was so late I delivered less than an hour later so may as well not have had it. Hindisght is always 20/20...

Thanks, ladies, that helps. And calling at 8am is no problem as is not being picky about timings - hopefully there will not be many such instances but I'd expect to be flexible in such situations and would just like to know we are seeing a dr I can reach in such instances.

I am grappling with this too right now. And the cold weather does not help coz the floors are cold plus some folks come clad in boots for drinks as they are proceeding to dinner and it seems like an effort for them to remove it. On the other hand, we are trying to keep the house free of spit and dust for my toddler, as well as generally finding it far more hygenic to keep them outside.

I think u may be referring to eyelet curtains? I got them in 3 rooms in my home too and the right rods are critical. Shalini and Kushwinder from Designer's Space put them up for me - they also made my curtains. They may put them up even if you are not buying curtains from them. See another thread tho coz some folks find them expensive...

Thanks famn-oz. That's just the reaction I've had from a few others. I think I'd prefer a tap filter to a Britta jug coz we are a large-ish household.

Thanks Punch and Muesli Bar. I am happy to hear folks use tap water for various kitchen uses. Part of my problem is I have no idea of what kind of filtration systems are available for homes and what they cost...need to do some further research I guess...would love to hear from someone who has installed a filer on the tap though.

Quick update. I did not comparison shop so don't know how expensive Shalini was. I can say though that she's executed well, suggested great designs and everything has been timely and painless...no chasing, no delays, no major screw ups...to me that is worth quite a lot...

Thanks ladies for your responses. This seems to be a two sides of the coin one coz the people who suggested this to me emphatically felt the water in Dubai is potable. I am still torn...we've always used bottled water thus far but it is true that the environmental impact is huge...do all of you use only bottled water even for tea, cooking, etc as well?

We are shortly moving to Jumeirah. I've read through a number of past threads about the fact that none of the water available locally in large take-home packs is truly spring water. Someone suggested to me recently that the water quality here is good enough for a high-quality water filter on the tap to make it safer for drinking (apparently it is already safe?). The cost benefit aside, this is obviously far more eco-friendly. Anyone have any thoughts? Pros? Cons? TIA.

Comprehensive health insurance is expensive. My AXA package, which does not include maternity, costs US$7000. My son's costs around US$5000. It covers a lot though - annual health checks ups, contact lenses/glasses, etc and for my son even vaccinations are covered which all insurance does not do.

Irooni, I also wanted all the same. I like the Home Centre ones a little more than Ikea - they are a little slimmer. Anndxb, Home Centre has one size up as well - I got some of those by mistake too.

Thanks Apricot for the tips. I'm also a complete newbie and have hired someone to help me but it is nice to have some ideas to tell him. Just to clarify, ficus in a pot is ok? Also, on veggies I suggested tomatoes, green chillies, coriander, parsely, mint, basil...I'll defi add rocket to the list but any comments on the ones I've listed?

Thanks an11. Turns out the Orchard Farm fabric is just enough for eyelet curtains - go figure - but this is very useful coz I may get some lampshades made out of something else. Just to clarify - did you need to give them the frame or did they make it based on the shape you indicated?
