Hi ladies. We're looking for a 3/4/5 bedroom compound villa in Jumeirah/Umm Suqeem. I spent the day yesterday and this morning today calling up brokers and am shocked at the apathy. People are not returning my calls, acknowledging smsses and I was even told by one broker "the rental situation is dire at the moment". I've tried CornishPixie's reco of going directly to management companies and they seem even more disinterested. I have to prod them to put my name on a waitlist. We've lived in 5 cities before this and I've never had this experience. What am I doing wrong? How do I get someone to show some interest in showing me some stuff?

Thanks! I am in touch with DRE. Single-storey villas seem to be like hen's teeth! Thanks again.

We are in Nuran at Al Majara at the Marina and it's lovely. Don't know about availability tho - I know the 2 beds are sold out.

I saw a bunch of nurseries in that area recently and my favourites were Willow and Homegrown. edited by sadubai on 24/11/2011

Sorry, I just realised you will not know much about her as you'd planned to hire her. Can you let me know how to contact her to ask her directly? Thanks.

I have not done this myself but friends have. You have to register an employment contract for the 2 months she will be in the US. The US embassy has a well-defined procedure available I think on its website

Hi. I could be interested. Is it possible to email me some more details on saandaainhk at the rate of yahoo dot com. I'd like to know how long you've had her, what her responsibilities were and how long she has been in Dubai. TIA!

Another vote for Mustela. Johnson's products are chemical laden. Mustela products really suit my 18-month old with the exception of the nappy rash cream. For the bum area we swear by Lansinoh or then just virgin coconut oil.

We took our helper to Greece on a tourist visa. It is Schengen but nowadays have to apply at the specific country. Was not a problem and they were very nice about it.

Shout colour catcher sheets could catch it in another wash. Else, White Brite?

Stain removers which work for me on different things are the Dr Beckmans range, Shout (the one with the brush on top) and rather than bleach I put whites in Napisan and White Brite quite regularly - same effect, much gentler on clothes.

Thanks Crystals. Yes, the same Sheikh Ahmed. Our last rental was a building which was due to be torn down and a 1-year lease turned into a 7.5 year stay so we may be willing to take that risk! Yes, I'd heard that Wasl Villas will be ready Feb. That could work for us at a pinch if we love it tho ideally I'd wanted to move in in Jan.

Hi, I'd posted separately about single-storey villas and this post was to check if anyone is living in Sheikh Ahmed Villas or is aware whether one will come available in December-January? Any ideas what the community is like? Also, someone reco'ed a new development called Wasl Villas which will be ready Feb - has anyone seen these?

Thanks Cornish Pixie for your reply. Sorry, that should read DH's family. This is what comes of typing with one hand while trying to keep DS off the keyboard with the other!:) We've already contacted DRE about Sheikh Ahmed which may be the one opp Park n Shop? I was also hoping for feedback from people who may be living in one. We are considering the two-storey and the guest room on the lower floor does make it workable. We are apartment folks and so prefer one-storey ourselves but will have to see what we get...

We're moving to Dubai year-end and after a brief trip last month we have decided a compound villa in Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim with some facilities for our toddler will work best for us. We'd like 4 or 5 bedrooms. Now for the challenge - ideally we'd like all on one floor as my DH's husband who stays often is not good with stairs. I understand Sheikh Ahmed villas have some single floor. Can anyone reco any other compounds we can focus on? Thanks in advance - I hope someone can help!

DubaiMaman, that's an interesting idea and one I will keep in mind. I am also thinking that blinds use less fabric than curtains so I could decide whether to go blinds or curtains depending on how fabric-light/heavy I am! I think it's a done deal...DH will have a fit though (the container contents are increasing by leaps and bounds) but I am so keen to give DS the room of his (and my) dreams...

Thanks Dan Lou, that is my inclination too. I am a little overwhelmed with how much I am suddenly spending before we move! But I agree, it is always tough to find things one wants in new places and here I know exactly where to go. Just the encouragement I need!

My son - and I! - love the Richard Scarry books. Also, the Dr Seuss books for younger kids like The Foot Book, There's a Wocket in my Pocket, Oh the Thinks You can Think. I second the suggestion of buying board books. My 17-month old is quite rough on his books and we've bought some great flap books which are showing signs of wear and tear.

I'm a big fan of the Cole Haan Nike Air range. Over the last few years many of my purchases have been from this range with the result that now around half of my flat shoes and heels are this brand. I don't know how good the Dubai selection and prices are but they go on deep discount in the US if you can order them there.

Hi. After a tour of various nurseries we've narrowed it down to Homegrown and Willow. Both are equally close to where we hope to stay. My DH and I are leaning in different directions. I'm a bit concerned that Homegrown is very new, not yet populated and my very social little one may not get enough out of it. He feels the eco-friendlyness of Homegrown is reason enough to choose it. Please, any input from moms who have chosen either would be very welcome as we struggle to decide by the weekend!

Hi. We will be moving to Dubai later this year and I was wondering how expensive good mattresses are in Dubai. Before we moved to HK someone advised us they are very expensive in HK and it was great advice as we upgraded ours and avoided buying them in HK. I am wondering whether it makes sense to do that here in HK or just come order new ones in Dubai. I need non-standard sizes so will not e buying off the shelf. I also want to know whether carpenters or handymen are available easily for furniture polishing - a lot of our stuff needs a lick of polish and it seems to make little sense to do it then put it in a container where it will get nicked and chipped again. Thanks!

I must admit I am also surprised that turnarounds here are so quickly. I've been advised by our agent that I should see stuff in the 4 weeks I have while our container is on the high seas and no point doing it before that. I'm doing a trip earlier to see DH and hope to see friend's apts and get a better sense of areas so we spend our time judiciously when we move at the end of the year.

Thanks hello.again.kitty. This is the first-time I'm going to be choosing a kid-friendly block so am new to this. But I know we need to have one this time round coz our current block - where we've been living since before he was born - is not great for my DS.

I've found this thread very useful as I too am debating between an apt and villa. In the balance I am an apt person and that's what I'm leaning towards even in Dubai. In the Marina and Downtown areas, which buildings are most toddler-friendly? How are the villas in Downtown as a compromise solution? Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

Thanks Di - should have posted there myself - new to all this! I defi want to try and see some of the nurseries - we're combining the trip with an apt hunt so I am not sure how much time we'll have. I'll defi read through the earlier threads. Thanks again.

Hi everyone we will be moving to Dubai later this year. I'm coming soon to look at apts. We have a toddler. I've always lived in apartment blocks so am keen on Downtown. Which buildings should I focus on where we will get a 3000-4000 square feet, 4-5 bedroom (I work from home, we have BIG furniture too!) apt which is child friendly? I want to give some pointers to the agent our co needs us to use. Where is the best value (always good to know!). Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer - this forum has been a great resource for me and I am sure I will continue to bother all of you!:)
