We have done 2 tours with Jagath Chaminda Wijesiri since 2006. I had also recommended him to my family. He is an accredited tour guide from the Sri Lankan Tourist Board, originally from Kandy, flexible, friendly, a safe driver and doesn't work on commission. If you just want transportation to and from Airport, he can take care of that. Or if you need a driver for your entire holiday in S.L.,, he is your man. When we engaged his service for the first time, he had a brand new van, very comfortable and spacious, so we were able to stretch out and take naps while he drove. So you might want to ask what type of vehicle he has now. Here is his website http://www.jagathtours.com/index.html and here is his email [email protected]. From all the research I had done, his quote was the most reasonable at the time. Good luck with the planning and enjoy your trip!

That won't be the same though. You'll only find the 'medical grade' Manuka honey which is 20+ for its antibacterial properties in health food stores or pharmacies. Pardon me, I didn't see on OP's post that she was looking for UMF 20+ Manuka.

You will also find them at large chain grocery stores. There is one that I like which I get from Lulu's or Carrefour, it's Honeyland by New Zealand.

Same as Suze63, went there twice around July. One time the rain was on and off (but quite windy), another time it rained non-stop during our entire stay there. The rainy season does reduce the visibility for diving though. The day we left, it cleared up and was sunny. My nieces who arrived that same day to a neighboring island had only sunny days during their stay! So I guess it also depends on your luck :D

Do you need a visa? Or does it depend on your nationality? We are British and did not need a visa all dealt with at the airport. We were there a year ago. Unfortunately they started this new policy on a trial basis beginning of August 2011, and as of Jan 1, 2012 it is confirmed all must have visas prior to arrival. But there are a lot of confusing info out there and that the website to apply for ETA visa hasn't been working properly.

1. he can't read for long. starts feeling pain in eyes, headache and feeling very sleepy. it started 10 years ago but now situation became worse. he can't read even 1 hour. 2. he starts feeling headache from flashing lights - imagine you are in dragonmart... 3. sometimes he feels so dizzy that he can't go to the office. he even was loosing balance. he can't sleep on the back as he feels dizzy. 4. he has strong pain in neck and back after stressful hours. (probably this is just spasm) 5. once i did simple massage of neck and shoulders for him (I have certificate but didn't practice long ago. so i know what to do and how). he stood up, became very pale and so dizzy that we thought he will be getting sick. 6. from any kind of physical exercises he is getting tired very quickly. too quickly to be normal. he needs time to return breathing to normal level. and he is 33 only. 7. he has high level of cholesterol (family history). Cholesterol: 334 mg% <200 Could you please advice me: 1. which doctor is better to visit - neurologist, cardiologist or some other? 2. what to check? 3. what kind of diagnostics better to have - MRI, CT, Doppler ultrasound? i assume he has problem with back and neck 4. which clinic is better? any kind of advice will be highly appreciated. TIA!!! From the list of symptoms and complaints, it could be as simple as eye problems (latent hyperopia which manifests with time and causing difficulty in concentration or binocular dysfunction in which keeping the eyes aligned is challenging and taxing and causing headaches), to migraines, but number 6 concerns me the most with regards to exercises that he tires too quickly to be normal. Unless he is really out of shape and with a heart condition, Myasthenia Gravis immediately pops to mind which fits some of the symptoms you have listed above. So I would probably see a neurologist first to rule out MG and others, and then proceed from there.

Haha I know. Singapore Sling has a great wealth of knowledge and knows more than I do about MY. Sounds like you have situated yourself pretty much in the heart of town, the traffic can be frustrating, but you get lots of happening around there. Unfortunately I think it is a bit far for her as she is in the "suburb", but will ask her first and let you know if she travels that way. I am not in MY, it is more like my second home. Hope you are all settled in now, and getting ready for Chinese New Year (January 23rd), KL will be kinda quiet as most people will travel back to their home town to celebrate, but if you can visit some Chinese friends in KL or invite new friends over, I think it will be a fantastic experience. My best friend's sister is a certified piano teacher and goes to homes for private lessons if your area isn't too far to travel to. As a side, we do use "lah" a lot, but still need to use it carefully as it is usually said in exasperation :D (hence the tone is vitally important in conveying the message) Good luck in your new adventure! I have been with them for over 5 years and generally have no issues with them. If you are looking at savings account, you might also want to consider RAK Bank as they offer 2.50% vs ADCB's 2.25%. The good thing I like about RAK is that you can have up to 5 utility bill payments and 1 withdrawal per month and still get your full interest paid which is not the case with ADCB. I had made some wire-transfer internationally recently and it seems to be the slowest one to show up compared to another 2 local banks. Upon inquiry, they seem to have 4 business days as they don't count Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Good luck! :)

Same for me - it shows the total amount for all fines no discount even when I go to the payment page - can someone tell me before I press PAY that it will be discounted....as it says on there no refunds once paid!! Is it possible the discount period is over? Either way you will still have to pay right? Why not just click on the PAY button and see for yourself? If you decide not to pay for some reasons, just don't enter your credit card info and get out of the page then.

Hi, Just did a bit of Vietnam couple weeks ago. The cheapest, quickest and easiest way to get Vietnam visa is via online. Try Vietnamvisapro.com, they have been around for ages and highly recommended by Thorntree forum members. We paid $18 total for 2 apps, and again you pay the $25 per pax stamping fee when you arrive at the airport. I highly recommend staying in the Old Quarter of Hanoi while you are there. As the other posters mentioned, the temperature will drop in February, so just bring layers. I think the average winter temperature isn't really that bad, but I guess it depends on your luck as well, it shouldn't rain but be prepared in case it got a lot colder. While we were there, the temp was about 20C but certain days felt like 16C when it was cloudy but still felt very pleasant. We walked everywhere, took in the Water Puppet Show at Thang Long Theater, concert at the Opera House, strolls by the lake, museums etc and most importantly, we ate till we dropped and all at the street stalls and our tummies survived :-D Good luck with your planning and have a great time. Cheers!

I got to the payment page of their website but the full fine amount was showing (not the discount amount). I am scared to go further or else I will end up paying full amount..and not getting the 40% discount. Anyone paid a fine recently? Was the discount given? Yes, I paid mine about a month ago and the original fine was posted and to the left of it showed the discounted amount (which was 50% discount at the time), and I just paid the discounted amount (automatically shown) on the payment page.

If you are looking for decent interest rate for your savings, I would consider ADCB. One thing nice about ADCB is if you have a regular savings account, you can also open up their Active Saver account online which will give you interest up to 2.25% p.a.(depending on deposited amount) which I believe is one of the best rates in UAE. (RAKBank is offering 2.50% atm) If you have larger savings and qualify for their Privilege and Excellency programs, they offer other benefits like outward Remittance (including TT internationally) 6 transactions free of charge per month. I have been with ADCB for the last 5 years and overall happy with them. However, I think RAKBank is really professional, and the staff is efficient, and so far their Fast Saver account is probably the best out there. Their online banking website is excellent (unlike another local bank which is the worst!) and easy to use. My only gripe is that the branch I go to for their ATM service need to have more machines, as there is always 12 or more people for 2 ATM machines most time and some people take forever for multiple transactions. Sorry can't say much about NBAD even though I have an account with them. HTH!

Hehe...sorry.... Here is from MB to Madhu's: 1) After crossing MB, stay on lane for Bur Dubai (3rd lane from right) 2) Follow road (underneath metro line), and stay on the left lane 3) At the big intersection, stay on second lane from left to turn left 4) after turn, go to most right lane, will see Fire Department on right, go into service/slip road 5) West Zone building on right :)

It can be quite daunting if you are not familiar in this neck of the woods. You have two options: 1) After crossing MB, stay on lane for Bur Dubai (3rd lane from right) 2) Follow road (underneath metro line), and stay on the left lane 3) At the big intersection, turn left 4) stay on left lane, turn left at the next left/u-turn lane (don't go further, no left or U turn at next intersection) - tricky one due to high volume of traffic 5) After you make the left/u turn, immediately turn right onto side street 6) turn right at T-junction 7) You will see post office in front of you. At the next T-junction, try to go straight into the parking (usually a bit of traffic jam at this junction) The other option which is the longer way: 1) After crossing MB, stay on right lane and keep going until you see signs for Sh. Rashid Road/Port 2) take the exit (before the overpass) 3) Take exit again (basically bear right) 4) keep going (you will see roundabouts and junctions) until you pass Lulu on your left 5) Continue to T-junction, turn right here 6) stay on the third lane from the left (3 lanes to turn left) to turn left (you see post office in front of you) 7) immediately turn right (after bus stop), entrance to parking is second on the right Sorry, don't know where Dr. Madhu is. If you have the building name, I can get you the direction. Good luck! :-) edited by Saharagypsyrose on 30/11/2011 edited by Saharagypsyrose on 03/12/2011

Depends on what type of bank you have, withdrawing at the ATM in BKK may be the easiest and safest way. The great thing about my bank is that I don't get charged additional fees for using other banks' ATMs, so the exchange rate being almost the same if not better than local exchanges, so we just withdraw however much we think we need when we get there, and withdraw again if not enough, so we will have nothing much left at the end and no need to exchange it back. Have a great time, we will be going there in 2 weeks time too! :)

Not knowing how old your DD is and how exaggerated the blinking is, but exaggerated blinking fall into the category of blepharospasm (a tic is a form of this). The best thing is to observe closely whether blinking increases or decreases in certain situation, and to ask your child directly if she is aware of it or if under any type of stress (assuming verbal and able to convey feelings) as it could be voluntary or involuntary. It could be as simple as being nervous, eyes irritation or vision problem, a way to get attention, or a more serious dystonia. I have ran into a few cases, where a child was blinking in an excessive and exaggerated way, and it turned out that her cousin just got glasses, and she wanted them too, so she started this attention getting behavior. Her vision was perfectly fine, once we realized the "cause" and put on a "blank" pair of glasses on her, the behavior immediately stopped. The next one was due to stress, and the blinking was mostly voluntary, but eventually it became involuntary into adulthood. So my advice is to go and see a pediatric ophthalmologist if the condition persists. In most cases, they come and go and nothing to worry about. Cheers! :)

bbcb, I feel for you! It is rather challenging time wise trying to get a fresh turkey at this pressing hour. I have a suggestion though, (to reduce the intensity of your "headaches"), I would probably get cornish game hens and stuff them, so each one of you get a mini "turkey" lol I am sure no one would mind there is no turkey on the table, but all will appreciate your effort and enjoy the camaraderie. Happy Thanksgiving and have a fantastic time tonight. Cheers! p/s: there are live turkeys running around at a horse riding club in Al Q. ;) edited by Saharagypsyrose on 24/11/2011

It should not be a problem having a reaction to PPD test if you have been vaccinated as you would be expected to have one. The way it is interpreted is the key - there are even tools and guides for clinical staff who evaluate them so that they can interpret the reacton. Basically they measure the size of the swelling. In general it should be less than 15mm if you have been vaccinated - anything above that needs more investigation. (there are other varibables for babies health care workers etc but in gerneal it is 15mm) All health care workers who adminster and interpret the test know this - so it should not cause any problem that you have a reaction to PPD - you are expected to have one. You are right in that one would expect a positive test reaction if had BCG previously. I believe mine was around 5-6 mm, but the point is that they will not just take your word that you had BCG vaccine without investigating further. I understand that they classified the results based on 5, 10 and 15mm increments and 5mm could be someone with a recent contact of TB. I guess one can never be too careful especially in the US where TB is not prevalent.

I had the vaccination done eons ago when I was around 9 or 10. More than 20 years later when I had to do a physical exam for some government stuff, they had to screen for TB and used the PPD test. Since I had BCG, the test was positive, so had to go for further testings to ensure that I did not have active TB.

Was a spectacular view over the Burj Khalifa and the SZR skyline - amazing colours. We felt very lucky to be where we were yesterday :) Completely agree!! DH and I were just few doors down over at Bistro Madeleine for early dinner and we could not stop commenting on how amazingly breathtaking the sunset and skyline was and the perfect temperature (and no bugs!). It was unusually quiet yesterday for some reasons at the waterfront, so we couldn't ask for a more perfect evening with great food!

farsi77, I can understand how frustrating it can be to suffer from dry eye and especially when treatment seems to stop working after a while. A reputable doctor should also need to understand the underlying cause of your dry eye (environmental, anatomical, or physical/medical) in order to address your issue properly. The quality as well as which deficient layer of the tear also need to be evaluated as some treatments work best for certain type of deficiencies. There are more than a handful of treatments out there, but they are problem specific and so what works for me may not work for you due to the underlying cause. Ophthalmologists specialize in anterior segment ie corneal specialists/refractive surgeons will be the best people to see, such as Dr. Rao at City Hospital, Dr. Huda at Atlanta Vision Clinic to name a couple. Good luck :)

Jaw popping can also be a sign of TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). Do you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding)? Have you been under a lot of stress? Google it to see if you have the other symptoms as well. I hope it's a one time thing for you as TMJD can be debilitating in severe cases. There are no real TMJD specialists here in Dubai that I know of, and not all dentists are qualified to deal with these type of cases. Good luck!

Unless things have changed, the way Salik works is you get charged every time you pass a Salik gate. HOWEVER, if you pass two consecutive Salik gates [i'>traveling in the same direction [/i'>within a certain time limit (I am not sure but think 45 minutes), then you will only be charged for one gate. For example, using Dubai Cheeky's trip, from Marina to Dubai Mall, DC would have passed both Al Barsha gate (next to MOE) and Safa gate (next to Safa Park) in less than 45 minutes. She would have only been charged for the first gate (Al Barsha) - Dhs 4, and there will be Dhs 0 next to Safa Gate. On the return trip, DC would have again passed the two gates, Safa and Al Barsha. In this case, she would have been charged for the Safa gate and not for Al Barsha gate. @The Mrs: You do get charged for the return trip.:) Right on, MorningCat! If the rules haven't changed, the maximum charge for Salik is 24 Dhs per day. The only time Maktoum Bridge is free is from 10pm to 5:59am (the non-operational hours of Floating Bridge). :-) edited by Saharagypsyrose on 23/10/2011

Antihistamines/vasoconstrictors will worsen dry eye symptoms in the long run so it is not recommended for dry eye treatment in general. Daily contacts are excellent for heavy protein depositors, but the water content of the contacts has to be taken into consideration as well based on the environment and your tear quality. So a different brand may work better for you, or it may be best to get a dry eye evaluation to see if treatment is required to improve your overall tear film quality, because it will only get worse as we get older :( Otherwise, for short term fix, Blink Contacts, Refresh Contacts which I have used are quite good.

If they are of genuine reputable brands, their lenses should have UV protection so in that they are all created equal. As PN pointed out, a lot of them now are licensed or manufactured under one roof by Luxottica. Ray Ban is popular due to the fact that most of their lenses are polarized. The difference in prices are usually due to the specific features, designs, and the brand name itself, so I guess it boils down to personal taste and which pair fits your face best. Good luck finding the pair you like :)

True. Mine is huge and heavy as well and I didn't feel comfortable lugging the monster to the warehouse especially it's a TV from US with the voltage issue. And for the price they charge, and not sure if the technician was experienced but most likely as clueless as me, I figure I would pay for the part and have a DIY. Thank goodness it worked and hopefully will last until a better 3D technology comes out :)

You would need to call Eros in Al Qusais and give them the model number and the issue with the TV. They will likely ask you to bring the TV into their warehouse so that they can do a diagnostic on it. If I remember correctly, if you are unable or refuse to bring your TV in, they will give you a different number to call for a technician to come to your house to check. The fee to come to my house last time was over 500 Dhs plus taxi fares just for the visit. So I ordered the part and fixed the darn thing myself for the price of the part only :)

I agree that nowadays that it is probably a moot point to lock your check-in bags as anyone (legal or otherwise) with the intention to break into your luggage will find a way and it is very easy according to this video http://kipkay.com/videos/just-for-fun/is-your-luggage-safe-from-airport-security/ However, I would be more worry about people putting things into my luggage and having a padlock there will at least deter the opportunistic offenders to a certain extend and for my peace of mind. I had things stolen from my locked bags (opened by customs according to the notifications) a few times while traveling through south east Asia. We generally lock our cabin bag too especially during a night flight. A long time ago, another passenger went though my bag under the seat while I was in the loo, so lesson learned :)

Yikes! What a hassle. I would probably first mention the additional cost of transport to get an exchange from him and then suggest that it may be best for him to have someone delivered a new one to your house so that he won't need to compensate you for the transportation cost and see where that gets you? In this case, it will save you both time and money? Not sure if it will fly, but worth a try? Hope you get it sorted out to your satisfaction! :)
