We live in a compound in Al Barsha 1 called Al Nasser Compound. The villas are 5 bed, 4 bath with 32 villas in the Compound and 2 shared pools and a gym. There are a few vacant at the moment as a company was renting them and they moved out. They are mostly rented through Better homes although I don't think they are exclusive anymore. Rent is 230,000-250,000. Hi what is this like ? I looked here over the weekend. seems nice, but no privacy at all. nice people? landlord ???? big villas!!! Traffic?

Are you an American citizen? When born in USA you are issued a number on birth. When the number arrives, you may then apply for the passport. I just had my kids passport renewed here, and you need the number for the renewal. The number is used to establish identity for an infant. Also, for tax purposes in the USA HTH

I need to clarify myself, but i think the bigger point is that there are fair skinned people in the mid east....many a red head from syria...with very fair skin also...... i dont even know why the p*rk assumption would then be there....since syrians are also mainly muslim? not to mention, over the weekend, saw a albino arabic man ...people were totally staring at the poor guy. seems like its going around.

PMFP!!!! red heads with freckles are classed as challenged? No, i was referring to the staring of the physically disabled....its in every culture ....sorry if you read it as freckle means disabeled

sorry - she made her bed; she new what he was and what his father was - she's not a dumb airhead but a highly intelligent woman from a Syrian background. Do you really think she was questioning what he was doing / had done or what his father had done when she was buying her chanel suits? or think of all the Syrian children that were going without as her husband and his cronies syphoned money off into their own pockets..... sorry, but no sympathy for her. edited by angelinaballerina on 27/02/2012 Bravo!! ballerina!!!

A beautiful and just awesome island is St John.....actually preserved national park........... I would say its about a 4 hour flight from JFK??? so nice.... but i do think cape cod/nantucket/ martha vineyard is a great idea, ive never been, and its on the list for sure

Sorry to bring up an old thread but where do I find out for sure if my daughter needs SATS --- AND --- her IB Diploma for US university entrance. Thinking about the pressure of writing SATS now on top of her current workload. Does anyone know if you can get in without SATS?? Have contacted three US universities but none come back to me as yet. If SATS absolutely essential, anyone recommend a SATS prep course - have contacted a few but would prefer to go with recommendations. i think the SAT is standard now .....it could only help to have done it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We live in Jum-3. I was also thinking to apply to Universal but DH works in Al Barsha so the drive will be a little far out. I'm feeling more relaxed about it. It's not the end of the world if she doesn't get accepted to ASD. I live there also, why we didnt pick UAS, lovely school though

Hi saintlouismama! Which campus at Raffles does your child attend? West or South? I have applied to the West Campus for my son who will be in KG1 and I am desperately trying to find reviews (positive and negative). I am not after American curriculum, prefer IB and English, but I would like to know more about Raffles. The teacher sounds nice and for me its mostly about the teacher, but what about teaching methods. facilities, do you see an improvement now its under Innoventures? Thanks in advance!:) I go to South. I have one in KG1 and 1....I am happy with the school, the parents, the feel. It isnt too big or small..... I have been there this year. I know the management shakeup happened before, so i cannot comment to be fair. there are 70 nations in the student population also, i like that. kids learn arabic, which i also like. french and mandarin is also offered. ..... the teachers have been good....as with our TAs....HTH....anything else? :)

So what's the difference between these reporters who get their stories from Expatwoman for the newspaper compared against that lady Naveen (remember her?) who also got stories off Expatwoman for her blog? Wasn't that Akasha? Didn't she lay into us one time about lesbians? are you really being serious? a reporter reads these posts for 'stories'????

Looks like I might have to send in forms to the other schools :( She's only been to a nursery for a couple of months in the US. This visit is for KG1. Try UAS (Universal American School). Great school and I can highly recommend it. They follow IB curriculum too. Yes, We loved that school too, sorry forgot about it, but it was just a bit too far for us.....

Saintlouismama: You don't mind me asking where your kids go to now. American school? My other options are DAA and Collegiate. DAA also had a LONG list for KG1. We were transfered last summer so -- some schools literally laughed at us when we were applying. My husband of course went to ASD first. Great rep. Awesome campus. We did not like the absense of Arabic and Islamic studies. I think if youre in the UAE you should learn arabic.....but that changed??? I have to be honest with you , comming from the Mid West, I have a hard time paying these prices also. Collegiate had not opened yet, so we went for a tour in the sister school, Raffles. Raffles was not a first choice. He did like the tour, the admin he dealt with, the vibe of the school. Also had Arabic. Because CAS was not open, we chose Raffles. I put both there cause i was not going to ASD and Raffles.....Its been fine. A few bumps but nothing serious at all ....Lovely Australian teacher there who bends over backwards for the class.....

DD was accepted without being seen, but I reckon that was based on the fact that she had been in nursery for 2 years. If they want to check your child out, then this would be a fine time to give him/her a stern warning before hand, and make sure you disguise anything they might pick on. If they want to check, then they will.....and my friends DS was refused because he was too shy. What to shy????? What is it with this school? Maybe thats why people look at me crazy when I say I chose not to go? Both my kids could not get in...so i didnt go. KG 1 was way overbooked.

Maids do not fall under any labor category in this country, never mind quoting the US of A. Al Q , I am just saying that maids demands and the law are two different things.... I was reiterating the point that a month off every year is alot of vacation, that some top CEOs dont even enjoy in my country. In addition to only wanting to fly emirates home...... We also are NOT afforded that luxury.

The bigger picture is that the maid is demanding more out of her family than is necessary. And just to add we are only responsible for a trip home after 2 years. ? i dont know why its different. ? perhaps the agency.....

Just have to agree with emness and the others.... It is just too much that she is complaining that SHE cant take emirates home??? join the club. Even the corporate club. Very few get to pick the ticket home nowadays. Also, can I remind you of something, In the USA employers are only legally required to give one week off per year. Esp for entry level jobs like housekeeping. I love some of these comments that are illuding to-' everybody deserves a month off' really? i wish the USA had these rules..... Your comparison with the USA is a moot point. Newsflash, this is the UAE. edited by Monkey Face on 20/02/2012 Well US companies here in the UAE, DO NOT give a month off. Unless its company policy..... Nobody is required a month off here, if anybody deserves it, its the poor laborers who work outside all day.
