I hope you know I wasnt saying that in the US we have any better of manners or anything...Just saying that I too would be hurt.... and I guess there are certain things that we cant take personally.

Sorry but this is impolite whether they were Arabs or not. And yes Arabs say "Inshalla will do" but I guess in a different concept. You can never judge people by their nationalities, it is not fair. saintlouismama, I hope your husband told you some good things about people here, not only how bad we are!! Yes, I know the good thing about Arabic culture for sure..I married one. I guess my husband was saying for me not to let it bother me, because people may not really mean it, they really dont know that its rude in certain circumstances. I might get my feelings hurt easily in that case.....hopefully that did not upset to many! but it can be different across the globe! edited by saintlouismama on 24/05/2011

Sorry...I guess I didnt see it was for Brits.... It just makes me mad when people do this to a kids party....but after having these talks and seeing these boards...I can see that things are different...especially like manners and customer services....

SunDevil, it wasn't me at the pool this weekend...but happy to know there are other Rotel lovers out there! :) Do not bring your washer/dryer (the wattage on such large appliances may not work as expected) - but do not expect the same size/quality here. You can find the odd 10kg washer, but the majority are 7kg - just expect to do more loads of laundry. We bought a 9kg washer and the capacity is still far less than the beautiful huge super capacity we had in North America. They have many of the same brands and they are just fine. The dryers are different, as most of them are condenser (not vented outside) - so there is a little container that stores the water from the clothes that you have to empty out each time. I was worried about this, but to be honest, it works just fine and I find my clothes are not as wrinkled (probably because there is more moisture still). I don't mind it now at all. And I second what DlnAces says - bring plenty of patience...things don't always operate very efficiently over here and it's best to go with the flow. We just laugh most of it off, otherwise you'll end up with blood pressure issues for sure!! It's an interesting experience here in Dubai - if you bring patience and a good sense of humour, you will have a great time! The quality of life is pretty good for the most part and plenty of friendly expats - very easy to meet people who will understand all of your challenges! Good luck!! edited by CdnExpat70 on 22/05/2011 thanks for this advice about the appliances...I have three kids 5...well just about 6...and under...all my patience is for them...or so I thought! :) Ill see in August....:) edited by saintlouismama on 22/05/2011

Hello from a fellow US expat! If you have a good allowance bring as much as you can. It will help you feel more at home here. I wish I would have brought more of our nic nacks and art work. I miss my things. How old are your children? Do they use wet wipes? Bring them from the US!!! I always liked Huggies in the states and I can't find thick wipes here despite them being labelled "thick" on the package. The wipes here are like wiping with a wet Kleenex. CdnExpat70 I think I met you at the pool this Friday morning! I've got a large stash of canned Rotel tomatoes in the pantry. I find them all the time at Lulu's and Spinneys. I also found small cans of Old El Paso diced chilies at Spinneys but not on a regular basis so I stock up when I find them. I also agree with you about the dog treats. We've found the selection very limited and our dog doesn't seem to care for them. Bounce dryer sheets can be found at Safestway along SZR. I almost wept in the aisles when I found them. I second the clothes shopping in the states. You can't beat the prices at Old Navy and I stocked up on swim gear for the boys (long sleeve rash guards) and play clothes. I also can't find the sunblock on a stick to put on the kid's faces. I ended up bringing 8 of the salon sized Redken shampoo and conditioner. I regret not bringing more mouse and now I'll have to bring a bunch back in August when we go home on holiday. We brought my huge Kitchen Aid stand mixer, our heavy duty Cuisinart food processor and our waffle maker and can use all of them at the same time on the transformer we bought at the mall. We never have a problem with them working here. OK, one big question...should I buy a washer dryer there or bring one? I am not only worried about the electric conversion but I am also worried about size? As you know all american stuff is big...even appliances? I dont know how they might fit in a small laundry area...I am glad to see there are dryers.....:)

If I were you I would bring your own furniture. You can buy lots of furniture here, but it either quite expensive or not a very good quality. I've also found that when moving around a lot if really helps to have your own things with you as it will make you feel at home straight away! I know Ikea is there...but what other places can you recommend? I have some antiques, but the styles seems quite modern...(the houses) Also, I think we will live in Jumeriah....thanks from USA....:)

Ladies, this is awesome, but keep these ideas comming. I am assuming that a. things do seems overpriced...ex..clothes for kids and furniture...and quality not to match in some cases b. bring personal items as much as I can c. I might have to look for some items...like decent Mexican ones for food? d. Spinneys is a fav shopping place for you? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE grocery pharmacy all around store?
