where I live in JLT there isnt any set parking spots, lots of empty spaces. Park and get a taxi from here, taxi will cost about 70 going and 95 on your return.

Hi SueB, I would be extremely grateful if you could please send me an email. It is in regards to the doc you use for your colonoscopies, I have a few questions. My email is shellly.shellly at hotmail dot com (triple L's in shellly). If I don't email you straight away after receiving your email its due to the time difference, as I'm in my home country. Thanks so much! :) I think Sue is in Canada, but she will be checking in I'm sure.

Not unless you have friends that live locally, like Mirdiff, where you can park you car. Cheaper to get a taxi, or maybe ask a friend to drop you off.

Can you bring the rabbit in out the heat and feed it up until a home can be found. It won't last very long out in the heat.

If your uk provided has your iPhone locked for international use, then you would need to get it unlocked here. Before you buy the phone ask the shop if it's ok to use abroad. edited by salsB on 24/07/2012

thousands of properties are lying empty across the city, more are going to be released (as said on EW) the prices will stay high as this is dictated by the Government. In my opinion, most rules are to protect the LL and not the tenant. They take our money by dont give a flying hoot about the rent paying. We have to suck it up, we have no choice, do we!!!!!

Rents are high for various reasons, one tangible reason is that people overpaid for their apts, there are others but they are harder to describe.. Rents are high if we consider the average salary here, many people spend 20-30% of their total compensation on rent which is on the higher side globally, in 2008 it was even worse when crappy 1 bedrooms were renting for 100k. If you are coming from the US , Canada or some parts of Europe, the rents will strike you as high. OTTH, I am not sure if rents will feel high if comparing with Hong Kong or Singapore, where rents may be around the same but apt sizes will be smaller on average We paid 125k in August 2008 for a one bed apartment in Uptown Mirdiff, they going for peanuts now.

Thanks everyone so very much, appreciate the support and advice! Thanks Salsb that is some great advice, didnt know about that, I guess I take everything at face value, could be in for a few surprises, hopefully not expensive ones! Thanks again. And when writing cheques out, make sure again they are made out to LL and not the agent. If in doubt, there will be someone that will know the answer.

The RERA set rent guidelines across Dubai. As for agents, they get paid for doing nothing really. Please be careful when working with an agent, make sure you get Landlords copy of passport, visa and a copy of title deed, make sure the name matches to each document. edited by salsB on 22/07/2012

Oh dear, now I'm having more doubts about coming than ever! We're coming at the end of August to Dubai, from a fantastic old Victorian in a great village in Western NY. I'm pretty freaked out, as I am NOT a posh type, despite having been surrounding by the trappings of materialism for years when I worked with bankers. Two questions - can you please advise as to any communities or areas to live where there aren't the sort of women referred to in this thread? I'm nearly 44 and life is too short to waste time with people who aren't down to earth and real. I have a huge fear that I'll move somewhere inadvertently filled with people who value material things & status. My DH has a great job and I will do something or another, as well, but money is not our driver in life. Second question - if you have a whinge session, can I come, too??? I won't whinge, I promise, but I'd love to meet down to earth people! I do hope that I fare better than OP, and am trying my hardest to be positive about this move. God forbid I come back to the US or UK a back biting snob! lol Oh please take alot of things we say with a pinch of salt, as I said there are some great people here, so don't get disheartened. Not to forget its summer here now, so I suppose our patience does wear a bit thin. Good luck with the move, and I am sure you will receive a warm welcome into Dubai.

Only ever flown business and never gained miles. Stupid question, but you have actually registered for Skywards and are on their system? If you upgrade using points, you don't gain any on that flight. I am a skyward member, think I've just lost my silver status as well.

I'm very grounded to an extent, back in the UK, have to fill up at the petrol station, can't get the norm food deliveries, the most daft things do make a big difference, we are spoilt here, and why not, nothing wrong with this at all.

Had mine done 3 weeks ago, 1200dhs, then i bought the special conditioner for 120. No you dont need to go back after 3 days for them to wash it, you can do it yourself. Do not buy their shampoo, just use Johnson Baby shampoo, works the same.

I also travelled alot with my girls, yes it is hard to amuse them, but one thing for sure I never let them bounce around on the flight, annoy anyone. I too had a little boy doing the same to me on a flight from Bahrain, his parents seemed to think this was ok. Well its not. I understand babies and children cry, I accept this, I have in times helped out where I can, and Ive had pleasure in doing so.

You guys do know they have E Gates in the UK right? You just rock up with your chipped passport, put it on the machine, step into a booth for the facial recognition software and then walk out. Takes 2 minutes! http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/customs-travel/Enteringtheuk/e-passport-gates/ I know Birmingham has the E-Gate as I use it each time I land. Im sure London Airports will have this.

I think what has happened is the same as elsewhere: the very rich have gotten even richer (dont know if they are happier for it). Just check how luxury car sales have soared .. However, everyone else is finding it more and more expensive. And for those of us renting, the continued atempt by agents and landlords to increase rents claiming "all is well" is a bit disconcerting as well And as expats, the biggest worry is the lack of stablity, where everything is tied to a job unless you own a business. Yes but if they have to go back to their home country they will be what they were before "nobody's" Louise, me likes this edited by salsB on 17/07/2012
