Has anyone noticed a new trend amongst housemaids? Hoards of Philippina housemaids are leaving their cushy, long-term, well paid live-in jobs (2,000 + benefits) and are hoping to find employers that pay them 2,500-3,500 + benefits. But there aren't many employers who are going to pay that, are there? Even Philippina sales ladies, receptionists, etc. are now applying for housemaid jobs....They all think being a housemaid is a new, lucrative career.... Unfortunately for the housemaids, most of them will end up being sent back to Philippines.... Please, don't forget to ask for references from the previous employer when hiring.... Also, many employers are now asking for a lot of money, just to release their maid.... Your thoughts? I am switching to other nationalities.....

I hope he will be fired and banned. Such aggressive people (and aggressive drivers) should not be taxi drivers. When you sit in the taxi, your life virtually depends on the taxi driver!!!!

Where in Europe? Because in a EU country you can't get away with this salary. You have to pay minimum salary as per local law, which is at least double in most EU countries. It's not true for Eastern European countries. Minimum wage is much lower than you think. Also, remember for a maid - accomodation and food is included - that's also part of the wage.

It would not surprise me if they spray it with something to keep them looking fresh longer. Last summer my husband bought grapes, put them in the fridge, came back after about a month, and they were still "fresh".... This would not happen with the grapes you pick from your garden. Also, I would not rely on the fact that if something is banned in Australia or other western countries, it's not used on fruits if they are destined specifically for export. I don't believe they have to follow the rules if they are not selling in their country. I have seen some products that have a small print: "Not to be sold in XY", where is XY is the country of origin or "For Export Only". I don't know the reason for sure, but I thought it was because it contains something that is banned in that country. edited by sand_dunes_dubai on 22/04/2014

Maccadubai, you don't need any booking to go camping to Khasab. However, does anyone know if there would be a problem at the border taking our small dog with us? Has anyone done it personally? Thank you.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to reclaim your money from such a scambag landlord. Not in a proper, nice or legal way. I am sick and tired of tenants being the victims all the time! Look at Meadows and Springs! Many landlords haven't paid their service fees, and tenants and all the other residents around have to suffer because Emaar is not picking up the trash! What use does it make that I fulfill my obligations as a tenant, pay a very high rent, and the landlord doesn't fulfill his???? I would suggest if you don't find a way to reclaim your money during your tenancy contract, don't count on it you will ever reclaim the money you spent on repairs or your security deposit after you move out. So the only way to get your money's worth is to stay in your villa after your tenancy has finished for another couple of weeks - rentfree. It will be very difficult for the landlord to evict you, and you will get your money's worth...... PS: What to do if the landlord is not in Dubai anymore? How will the rent committee enforce the landlord paying me for the money spent on repairs, moving cost, agent fees, and of course my security deposit? And the hassle and time lost with yet another move? Promises made and not fulfilled have incurred nearly AED7000 worth of maintenance in just a few months since signing and goodness knows what else will happen. Is there anyway I can reclaim this money back so far? Emails and phone calls promising to do, but never. Drains, ceiling lights falling (causing damage to floors) - the list is exhaustive.

220,000 should be enough for a smaller 4 bedroom house, depends on where the kids' school is. The prices have gone down 10-15% from August/early September. Villas that have been sitting empty are now being rented for considerable less then a few weeks ago and mostly for less than the listed price on Dubizzle. Many agents list the same villa for significantly different prices, in the end you will be negotiating with the landlord, not the agent. Always negotiate, the asking price is just that. Go with smaller/less known real estate companies, they usually have cheaper properties. If you can, pay by one check, you'll pay less. Of course, make sure to check the credentials of the agent, and the landlord/title deed, and make sure you read your contract. Don't sign a non-renewable contract.

Another thing I have noticed that contributes to the rising prices is that the agents and landlords want you to sign and move in immediately. They pressure you to start looking a week or two before you need to vacate your old place, and then, since you are under time pressure, you are likely not to negotiate and pay the higher price they are asking. I think the tenants here are in a bad position, paying the agents commission, and not being able to sign the contract at least one month in advance before moving, and not knowing the real prices, only the asking (inflated) prices from Dubizzle or Gulfnews. And plus dealing with all the lies about property has just been rented, but I have one just like that for 25,000 more, or listing of properties that don't even exist, but the agents just want you to give them a call. And also all those comments: Oh, mam, your budget is too low for this type of property, you need to increase your budget..... On the other hand, you see houses that have been on the market for 2-3 months....

Hi, was the dog found in the desert between Layan/Al Waha and Arabian Ranches? If so, I might know who the dog belongs it. There is one saluki missing in my neighbourhood.... Waiting for your response.

1. Many threads (where I did a search) talk about finding inexpensive regular abayas in Lulu, but which branch is it? I'd like to buy an adult sized one and another one for my 6 year old. The Lulu I shop at doesnt have the clothing section at all? There is a small shop on the top floor in the mall where Lulu's (Al Barsha) is. I don't remember the name of the shop, but I bought abayas there for my daughters, they have a nice selection, and good prices as well.

This is an interesting topic, and only shows how complicated the issue is. You are kind to your maid, give her Fridays + time off, and you expose yourself to the risk of huge fines and jail time. You don't give a day off and don't allow her to leave the house, you are regarded as an inhuman employer..... Just for the record, I give a regular day and time off, but I am also aware the the housemaid's thinking is different than mine, and although I trust mine, I can never be 100% sure no matter how many times you explain the laws to them.... Unfortunately, I see it happening around me all the time.... I wonder if you sign a notarized contract with your maid not allowing her to work outside of the house, if that would be valid in court and free you - as a sponsor- from fines and jail time??

Thanks SDD! I have to admit that this is my primary concern and the only thing that is stopping us moving there. But last time I drove there to go to the Fitness First Club, I only saw a few people jogging and a few riding bicycles. The communal area (swimming pool, play areas,..) must be inside each "district" then ? Yes, true, each community ("district") has it's own communal area and facilities.

Thanks Rosierat for your input! Yes I think that it's in a very good location. We live in an apartment in the Greens, but we miss having a garden and a house. So that's why we think it would be a very good option. I am also concerned about my son making friends there (he's 11 and at the moment he loves playing downstairs in the community area with all the other children from the block). Do you think he could have the same sort of interaction with other kids there or peole are more "private"? He will definitely have plenty of friends to play with. Loads of kids of all ages are playing on the street or playgrounds all the time. He can have the same sort of interaction with other kids as in Greens, don't worry....

Hi Marroosh, the Long Term Visit visa is valid only for 3 months. I costs 1,000 aed, and I believe it doesn't matter she arrives in AD, as it's visa for entry into the UAE. It's issued by Ministry of Interior, General Directorate of Residence & Foreigners Affairs. You also have to pay a deposit of 1,000 aed which you will get back after your mom leaves. Not sure how to get a 4 months visa though. Maybe you can do one visa run to Hatta after those 3 months? you can make a nice one day trip out of it... And yes, you have to prove it's your mom (e.g. birth certificate).

Resihun, I am very sorry about your situation. Unfortunately, I don't know a lawyer that could help you, but since your husband is beeing unreasonable, and threatening you, maybe your best bet would be to get out of here as soon as you can if you don't want to lose your boy.... best of luck to you!

It's 100 aed at any optical store, but if you buy glasses from them, then it's free. If you want a more thorough checkup, then schedule a consultation with an ophtamologist. Then I would recommend Dr. Habash from the American Hospital.

It's not common at all to pay 2000. in my neigbourhood the going rate is 1000-1300. it depends where you live. Also, I think Expatwoman readers and especially newbies pay the most...
