As you are sending them to the UK they will have to travel as cargo so are charged by weight (the volume is also factored into the costs too) so it's important to keep the weight down as much as possible. I would go for Skudo crates which are light. For your cat I believe you would need the Skudo 3 and the dog the Skudo 4. IATA recommend that the crate length be the length of the pet plus half the front leg length, the height of the crate is no less than the height of the animal, and the width of the crate be double that double the width of the animal's shoulders. Check your measurements again and satisfy yourself that these crate sizes are ok (being slopey shouldered here ;) ) http://www.dubaipetfood.com/shop/kennel-iata-251c2.html <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 11/05/2015</em>

Sorry, we're giving out of date information. I think for most of us, when we went to download Skype that was the case. I didn't know it had changed.

I echo what mrs13b said. Skype to Skype is fine (make sure you have it before you arrive in the UAE) but you may need a VPN (it's not swearing!) to call phones from your Skype account. I've had mixed success with Whatsapp calling. I've not had a lot of luck calling a friend in the UAE but had perfect calls with DH when he's been overseas. Bear in mind it's not allowed to use VPNs here...... <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 10/05/2015</em>

Good morning! I think the first thing you need to figure out is if you will be able to make enough money to support yourself and your children. Your children will need care while you are at work in the way of nursery or nanny/housemaid - both of which come at a cost. Factor in rising rents and you're going to need a really good salary to live comfortably.

That's what's happened, Dentro - and what I don't want. I'm not going to use AED 2k worth of credit in 5 weeks. I've emailed them and asked them to pay it into my bank account so hopefully they'll do that.

I'm not sure. I've just spent another 20 minutes on the phone with them and they "seem" to be saying I can have it paid back as cash or into bank/credit card. I've sent the email they told me to send so hopefully I'll get the money transferred to my account within 15 days (working days, I think). I'm not holding my breath...

DH and I have cancelled our international roaming, one on each network. We've asked for our AED 2000 deposits back and told both providers that we don't want it credited to our accounts because we won't use AED 2000 of credit before we leave. However, surprise surprise, both of us are now 2k in credit. Has anyone actually managed to get their money back please?

That's not what I was saying. Someone asked how you're considered resident/non-resident and was it if you has residence in one country you couldn't be considered resident in another.

Just to add, you can be resident of two places at once. I've had residence visas for two different countries, and up until last week, so did DH. Not that it is of any help to you CP.... I always use my UAE licence to hire cars and have never had a problem, mainly because it's in English I guess.

There is RAK Academy which has a secondary. I don't like it at all, others do. Other options are Ajman Academy (they run a bus from RAK, I believe) and the Sharjah English School. Quite a few parents pulled their children out of RAK Academy and put them in Sharjah and love it.

If it's Emirates I believe they won't fly snub breeds May-Sept included. A friend just sent a snub back to the UK with EK and had to sign a waiver, but was told the dog had to fly before the end of this month. Linda will tell you, but I think there's a minimum time that has to have passed between vaccinations and when they can travel, even for boosters. I seem to think it's something like 3 weeks, but Linda will confirm.

Oh, and by the way Chippy, well done for planning to take your dog with you rather than dumping him. (Today I saw someone surrender three cats to a shelter, or in his words "I want you to dispose of them" :( )

I agree with dxbrun. All the info given on this thread regarding good and drink is relevant but the UK is rather complicated and Linda knows all the ins and outs. She's also a damn sight cheaper than the major companies.

Re: the food... Some airlines make you sign to say the animal HAS been fed and some will make you sign to say the animal HASN'T beed fed. Do what you think is best (as ExpatLora says, I'll be going with no food for mine) but be prepared that you may need to sign to say you've done the opposite of what the airline said.

Regarding your question about water, it's the responsibility of the person who takes the dog to the airport. Some people used those bottles with the pipe and a ball in the end like you described but a more popular method in a bowl that clips inside the door. Some crates come with them supplied, and it you're lucky, it will will a no-spill bowl. If not, people use plastic containers (ice-cream containers or GLAD containers) which the drill a couple of holes into and attach to the inside of the door with cable ties. The trick is to fill the bowl with water the night before so it's an ice block. Keep the ice block in a cool bag until the last minute and put it in the water bowl just before the crate is sealed with cable ties. It won't all splop out straight away nd will last longer.

I did think about posting regarding which company I used but I'm sure it'll look dodgy with my low post count coming on here to recommend a company  But in case anyone's interested, we used ReCo http://www.reco-world.com/ They have several providers they use. They do the survey and contact all the providers on your behalf. They don't charge you either.

No idea of costs but I can do directions. At the end of the E311 turn right at the roundabout with the Spirit Of The Union logo on it. Straight over two bridges, straight over roundabout with golf ball things on it, straight through lights, straight over roundabout with dhow on it. At roundabout with pearls on it turn right and go over bridge across creek. Straight over roundabout with the incense burner thing on it. Left at second set of lights (Manar Mall is at first set), follow signs.

I don't know, because I was asked for my ID card. I got one last month in RAK and a friend got one in Dubai. He paid over AED 200 to get one in Arabic which cost AED 150 to get translated. I paid AED 55 to get one done in English here in RAK. It might be cheaper to pay the fuel and get one in RAK.

Don't worry about the new owner getting the transponder. Take your boat and all the paperwork to the CG near Shindaga. They will sort it all out there. You're looking at closer to 2-3 months to get your deposit back (form someone who did it this year).

Something I learned today, dogs entering the UK must have paperwork showing they have has Tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before they travel. Also, they ca't fly until vaccines are 21 days old, even if they're only annual boosters.

Firstly - sorry Tallybalt - all pets entering the UK must enter ss manifested cargo, not excess baggage. You can fly to AMS on KLM as excess baggage for USD 200 but you then have to get from the Netherlands to the UK and you can only do this via selected ports. Heathrow is the most expensive airport to come into and if you have to enter via Heathrow make sure the animal is received during office hours Monday to Friday. The price jumos up for out of hours, weekends and public holidays. LGW is cheaper and Manchester is even cheaper still, This can account fo about 30-40% of the cost. Supply your own crate, you can find what size you need following this guide http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/live-animals/pets/Pages/index.aspx Petexpress can be difficult to get hold of but will only charge a fraction of the cost of other companies to do the paperwork. Keep trying. My friend got quoted a similar price for a very small dog a few days ago by a relocation company who added 50% on to the retail cost of a crate and wanted to charge nearly 4k for paperwork

I hate summers here. HATE HATE HATE 'em. Hate getting soaked just hanging the laundry out. Hate sunglasses steaming up as soon as I set foot outside the door. Hate the SWASS (Sweaty Ass) syndrome where sweat trickles in places you don't want it trickling, hate sweaty clothes, hate it being too hot for the kids to spend any time outside. It might be nice and quiet but I'll trade that for a busy city in a nice climate. And before anyone tells me to eff off somewhere cooler, I'll be doing just that :D

I'm sorry you didn't get to adopt but I would urge you to stick with it. There ARE long haired/fluffy kitties looking for homes. I would still urge you to please not buy and support a cruel trade, but to wait for the right one to come along. Lulu is a long haired beauty http://rakawc.com/adopt/cats.html
