Why not say 'influential'? The family wasn't mentioned until you brought it up. Now we all know.

When I called du the guy I spoke to itemised everything and I'm in no doubt it is genuine. I'm pretty miffed that I wasn't told during previous phone calls to Du but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. I would have been more receptive to being told I had an unexpected unsettled bill if I could have been informed without the attitude.

It was actually genuine as I found out later (if you want to cancel an account do it yourself (as I normally do), don't rely on your PRO or it will come back and bite you on your rear end many months later grrrr!) It was his attitude. It was as if everything was a big secret and he could only give me a few details. I lost the plot at being told that someone was getting angry with me for daring to ask why it was thought I owed money I called Du customer service centre number who went through everything and confirmed that the debt was correct, which is annoying because I have contacted them about the cancelled account in the past and no mention has been made about an outstanding balance. When I called them, the guy I spoke to was very helpful and very polite - in complete contrast to the power-tripper who called me.

I had a call from Du earlier telling me I owed them money. Unfortunately the 'gentleman' refused to give me any details as to why I owed them money or for what address but insisted I had to co-operate with him and visit a service centre in person. When I said I refused to visit anywhere without being told why it was thought I owed money he told me "I am getting angry with you". Lucky it was a phone conversation otherwise he may have been digesting teeth. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 15/02/2011

There was a doctor there who was absolutely shocking but his name seems to have disappeared from the list, thank goodness. I did chuckle at "Obstertiecs". I also find this picture a little disturbing LOL! http://www.nicolasandasp.com/medical.html

I think pain can be used as a verb but not in the sense of physical pain. However, if words are said or used incorrectly for long enough, they will enter into the language and be perceived as normal. nope.... Don't think so..... it's pain or painful... but never paining... :) I used to have a maid in Muscat who would complaining she had "full body paining".

No, there are different Granadas. There's Granada 1 and 2 compounds, and there's an area of Mina Al Arab called Granada.

Ah, ok. My apologies - from your first post it sounded to me like you'd accepted a job without knowing the package that came with it but that's clearly not the case, thank goodness :) Your DH should look further afield into Ajman and Sharajh. They're not as convenient as RAK but still very easily do-able on a daily basis. (I know pwoplw whi take their kids to school in Sharjah and on the Dubai/Sharjah border).

I haven't been for a couple of years but we had a great day out, and for very little money, too. My only complaint was that the food was not up to much, and i don't know if that's changed, but apart from that we liked it.

I have fostered 10 dogs in the past so I'm hoping it won't be a problem with DH. We were thinking of getting another dog as company for our boy after we lost our retriever a month ago. I have now decided not to adopt another dog while we're in the UAE so we *should* have space.

I did the Mac photobook a few years ago. I can't remember where they were delivered - family in the UK, or family in Canada (UK I think) - but they weren't delivered here. Maybe they can deliver to a Shop & Ship address.

I've just re-read your post and would urge you very strongly to do a lot more research on what you've accepted. Unless you're on a rock star salary it's not as simple as landing here and waiting for everything to fall into place. Although rents in RAK are a lot cheaper than Dubai, the cost of living for everything else is pretty much the same. If your husband is not working (there is the RAK Exhibition Centre, but I don't know anything about it) will he be doing visa runs or will you be sponsoring him? If he's going to do visa runs while he's out of work he won't be able to get a driving licence and is unlikely to be able to drive a private vehicle. I have heard that it is possible but I wouldn't guarantee it. He won't be able to buy a car, take a loan - basically you will be responsible for everything. If you will be sponsoring him, who will pay for his (and your son's) sponsorship costs? Will you have a housing allowance, if so, how much? Will they pay for schooling? I know your son is not school age but he will be in a few years if you intend staying. You have a choice of 1 school, IB or British Curriculum. Have you discussed medical insurance? Flights home? Do you have a pot of money behind you for the move? You will be expected to pay a security deposit on your rental property. It's not cheap to set up out here and the first 6 months can be a huge financial drain. I don't want to scare you, but you do need to look very closely at your decision and make sure it's the right one. good luck. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 14/02/2011

So to simplify, those with a 'letter' are townhouses, and those with a 'number' are villas?

All of Maeen 1 and 5 are. Maeen 2 is a mix, Maeens 3 and 4 are all townhouses as are all of forat and Zulal. I no longer have my Lakes brochure with all the info and different types in it unfortunately.

It's normal :) I don't mind my in-laws but they have DH climbing the walls within a couple of days, and I really don't understand why. My Dad really misses us. I'm an only child so his only offspring, and his only grandchildren are here. He gets upset when he leaves us or we leave him. I love him and my stepmum dearly but I get wound up by them, especially as they stand in my kitchen when I'm trying to work in there and have to do the tango to get out of their way. DH thinks they're great and laughs at me when he sees me seethe. It's awful because you know they're only there for such a short time and you'll miss them when they're gone.
