Never heard of tipping nurses, I never heard of that in American hospitals, anyway. But waitresses/waiters? In the US the hourly rate is around $2/hour. They survive on tips! Is it not the same here? I couldn't imagine not tipping in a restaurant....in any country, really. Restaurants in the US add the service charge to the bill so you have to pay whether the service you received was rubbish or excellent...we found it really annoying to be honest... That's only for big parties (i.e. a table of 6 or more). We were 9 in Tony Roma's last night and 18% gratuity was added to our bill. (sorry for digging this up but I looked at the receipt and this thread sprang to mind).

Grand Grill is one of my favourites and I've never had a bad steak there. If you go tell them it's your birthday ([b'>even if it isn't [/b'>!) and they will sing to you. Do people really do this ?? I'd be embarrassed enough having them sing to me when it WAS my birthday, let alone when it wasn't!

Someone in Germany is trying to pay money into my bank account. He has said his bank needs my house number street and town to be able to make the transfer. Has anyone heard of this? I'm happy to give my mailing address but until I know it's normal to need someone's physical address I'm not so keen to divulge my physical address (especially as he knows I'm out of the country). I know this doesn't help you now but I always book weeks here and there and sometimes a whole month, of course in the busy periods like summer you have to pay a deposit at DKC but at least you have something booked. If you cancel with more than 31 days your deposit will be refunded. I hope you find somewhere. There is also [b'>Pish Paws[/b'> in Sharjah. *snigger* :)

I too think it's not about self-respect. Not dressing appropriately or in accordance with a country's laws says to me a lack of respect for others, not self. I will be going on vacation soon and although I will not be wearing skimpy or revealing clothes I will be wearing clothes that show my knees and shoulders - something I don't do in public here. It won't be because I've suddenly lost my self-respect the moment I leave these shores.

[b'>i know the rules very well[/b'>, it is just that when i first came here [b'>ive seen girls wearing skimpy clothes, so i thought well cool![/b'>i thought it was that strict herw.i qm fully aware of the countrys rules with regards to clothing and yeah i must admit my carelessness was due to the behavior of other people around.i feel that expats in qatar are more sensitve in this issue because qa's rule were STRICTLY implemented, at times i feel that here in dubai rules depends on nationality,if you know what i mean.No worries guys i just pulled out my qatar clothing. ;) If you know something is wrong, seeing other people do it does not make it ok - it makes them wrong too.

I wanted to order some products from Bobbi Brown in the US so used the online chat facility with S&S for clarification. I was told they wouldn't carry cream eyeshadows or even mascara :( I guess it's luck of the draw whether they will carry certain items but after being told that, I'm not going to risk it.

D-J, have you paid for and opened an account with Shop & Ship? To use S&S you [u'>must[/u'> have opened an account with them. If you have, you will have been given a unique address in the UK and another in the US (maybe China now too). The address you enter will be as mogindubai has put; the Account # is the part that is unique to you. Their system will know that your account number is for you only and will know to send all packages to an address in the UAE that you specified when you opened the account (can be changed at a later date). <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 27/07/2012</em>

If it's just simple trouser shortening, the best answer would be 'Wundaweb', you simply iron on with a hot cloth and boom, trousers shortened with no sewing required .You can pick this stuff up in most supermarkets. However, if you definitely wish a tailor to do it, most dry cleaners offer this service and there are lots in JLT. Hope that helps. If it was me, yes. This is a single man, here alone, working all day. Not sure he'd even know what to do with it :) ETA didn't think about dry cleaners - thanks, that's probably the easiest solution. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 26/07/2012</em>

Plug Ins in Festival City had a selection. They had a few of the large ones (Maytag and Fisher & Paykel) as well as several slightly smaller ones. Not sure what they have in stock now as this was a while ago.

Largely depends on how long you plan to be here. If only for a couple more years I wouldn't do it as there's no telling how long it could take to sell the property on if you want/need to move. Pricewise, it's probably a good time.

I\ve had 3 different LG appliances and they've all given me a problem yet many people swear by LG... don't know what my siemens model is as it came as a fitted appliance. Whirlpool is a long known and trusted brand. I've had Whirlpool appliance that have never given me a moment of bother and I wouldn't hesitate to have another Whirpool.

Had an LG, wasn't overly impressed. Now have a Siemens and it's given me no problems so far. Bought a Bosch in 2002, gave it to my Dad when we left for the ME and it's still going strong. Very quiet too.

That's the 'Barracuda Bandit' story, Lexie, of people being bumped then threatened with police. Personally I think a bit of Urban Legend comes into that. I've had an accident where the police needed to be called and they weren't remotely interested in checking my car. Also, unless the "bandits" follow you all the way to Sharjah before bumping you they're on a it of a lost cause. I would hope you would spot someone following you in that time too! the manager of Barracuda did post on here quite a long time ago and I think he was in favour of calling the police if you got bumped and threatened. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 17/07/2012</em>
