Is there something going on nationwide? We've had helicopters buzzing round up here, a police car sitting with flashng lights on the end of emirates road then 6 police cars flying through RAK with their sirens on.

Yep, situation totally normal, sad to say. I have 3 TV connections in my house but it's only the one with the PVR where the audio and video are waaaay out of sync.

Baby, as in "Don't forget to put a hat on baby before you take him out", like it's the baby's name. To me it would be like saying "Don't forget to put the lead on dog before you take him for a walk". I am aware that I have probably p***ed of 98% of EW-ers, but...... :)

I have a hand-held blender and always find that gives me 'glue' when I use it for mash. If it's a topping for shepherd's pie, I don't much care though.

If there is finance on it then you will find out at registration, or you ask to see the registration card. On the back it says "mortgage company" and "mortgage document no." These should be blank if there's no finance. You will need to have insurance before you register it in your name, you can't do the transfer without it, but getting insurance is very quick; we've always received our documents via courier the following day.

My feedback: I found some of the jewelry was a bit hard to see against the dark background. I think your prices are reasonable. I would like to see sizes for the bags, and strap length. I still think the bags are lovely :)

I went in the summer. Don't have a biometric passport but did have to do the ESTA thing (I did it at a machine at the airport because I was travelling from Canada and immigration/customs was done the Canadian side). This was with a British passport issued in 2003.

...or when you call a business and you get answered with a brusque "Hello?" and you have to ask if that's x,y and z business. It also annoys me when they do say the business name but mumble it into their chest and you still have to ask if that's x,y and z business.

To be honest, I'm not sure as I've not attempted to buy alcohol up here during a dry time. RAK, like UAQ (think Barracuda) closes its alcohol outlets during Ramadan so that is different from Dubai, but I couldn't say with regards to dry nights. If you know which hotel they're staying in you could call and ask, or they can buy duty free on arrival? Not sure about the legalities of transporting from the airport to the hotel but no licence is required to buy or consume alcohol in RAK. I believe the Hilton on the creek (not the beach resort and spa) has an outlet on its premises. I've got the Al Hamra Cellar on speed dial so I'll call them later and ask if they know :)

*whispers* I use one when I'm out with the dog as it means I have my hands/arms/back free but can still carry tissues, dog poo bags, phone and GPS. I hate the word fanny, full stop (I was going to say 'period' but that's another word I don't like).

I hate the words "fanny" esp when used by americans referring to your bum (in the UK it has a whole different meaning!!) and the "V" word relating to the place that the UK is on about when americans say fanny! Im cringing and pulling a face just typing about them and cant even bring myself to type the "V" word in full! My Canadian husband calls bum-bags 'fanny packs' SIMPLY because he knows it makes me cringe. Although I did snigger and (post a photo on FB) when I saw 'fanny packs' for sale in Canada

I don't know about private nurseries (don't know the names of any either I'm afraid) but the school has Playgroup from 2.5 years which is AED 11k per year. ETA, sorry, I should have looked here first http://www.rakpedia.com/education/nurseries-and-schools.html RAKESS is the school that the expats put their kids in. There's the RAK American Academy for Girls but I only knew one expat there and they pulled their DD out. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 21/11/2011</em>

Thanks. We were in Dubai for years and bought a studio in Al Hamra Marina as our weekend getaway from Dubai as we thought it was so nice up here. Bit of a waste of time as we later decided to go the whole hog and move up here permanently :) It has its charms but it also has its drawbacks.

Good if you like being outdoors, beautiful scenery, relaxed pace of life, cheaper property prices. Not so good for schooling - only one school that the expats go to. Not much in the way of shopping - you end up heading back to Dubai for the malls.
