Has the villa been repossessed? Is she being evicted? If no-one has taken any action involving her I'm not sure what she would file a case for, non-payment of mortgage is between the property owner and the bank, nothing to do with the tenant. They could well pay all the arrears next week and everything could be fine so if I were her I'd wait until I was sure there was an issue involving me before running to the police. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 18/09/2011

I've had vehicle insurance with AXA for years and never had a problem. I've needed breakdown recovery and accident repair, both have been easy to deal with through AXA.

We used GAC to come the other way. They also unpacked our container from the UK when we arrived in Oman. They put DS's cot together wrong (which is not surprising) but there was nothing broken. They also packed, shipped and unpacked when we moved from Oman to Dubai. Again, nothing broken.

I'm surprised at that. When I lived in The Lakes the maids (mine included) were always to keen to take the kids to the park in the afternoon so they could all get together and gossip under the guise of "work". Sometimes they would even look up and check on the kids too. We had annoying maids, you have annoying parents lol!

Is it a top loader? Many top loaders have hot and cold feed - they don't have an internal heater like many front loaders. In my previous villas we just connected the cold feed as we only had one tap although my machine had two hoses - one for hot and one for cold. This place has both hot and cold taps so we have connected both hoses from the machine but if I want a cold wash I just select a cold program but as Aroha says, no matter what program you select, if the water coming from your cold tap is hot, then a hot wash is what you'll get.

No. Buying isn't such a bad idea if you know you will be here for a good many years. Our house was completed 2 years later than we were initially told so by the time we moved in we were already on the home run, except by that time the bottom fell out of the property market and we're stuck with it. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 13/09/2011

Because I want to leave the UAE but would be foolish to while we still have this place. It's a lovely place in a lovely community and I will miss it but it's just a bl**dy millstone around my neck and in this economic climate I can't that situation changing soon. We do not want to leave the place empty for months on end because places here just don't do well when they're unoccupied.

Anyone know if the law varies from Emirate to Emirate? I was just at a hospital and a heavily pregnant lady came in seeking medical attention from an ob/gyn. She sat behind me while a member of staff was taking her details. Twice the lady confirmed she was single. I am certain she was a tourist. I was curious to know if she is likely to face trouble or if it is discretionary.

Off on a bit of a tangent but my dog has a thing about certain types of plastic, and in particular, Lego. If a piece gets dropped on the floor he'll take it outside to his kennel and if I see him nibbling on his forearm I know he has a piece of Lego on there that he's chewing. He won't take it off the table but if it's on the floor he thinks it's for him. Every now and again I clear his kennel out and id the past I've found one of those syringe type dosers for kid's medicine complete with canine teeth marks.

Thanks for that AF3 - that's kind of what I thought and why I was happy to keep her in IB; so that an international transition would be easier. However, with the school's pass rate for IB being so low I was wondering which way to go. We still have a year or two before we need to decide so I guess I can just keep an eye on the school and the results, and make a decision closer to the time.
