It seems they always put the drops in the eyes of children during a test and this has to be done by (opto-something-not-an-optician). I get DD's eyes tested when we go back to the UK.

Unless the rules have changed, eye tests for children (up to 14?) have to be done in a hospital not an opticians.

Another one for hypnosis here. It's not a miracle cure:- I had set times that I would light up such as as soon as I came downstairs in the morning, after a shower, after the ironing was finished etc - a habit. For a while I'd be in the shower and be thinking "Time for a ciggie" and would have to remind myself that I no longer smoked. After a while it just seemed to be forgotten. I have smoked the odd one since I gave up 8 years ago and they make me feel so awful! Even now I can imagin lighting up a cig and pulling on that first puff..... then I remember the nausea and headspin that they give me :)

No, but if your username is based on your real name then it might be obvious. Don't under-estimate the power of EW. DH wanted some info about the process of car-selling yesterday. I was travelling so had no internet but he told me he'd looked on here to get the info he needed. Also, a few years ago I got caught out by something I'd posted on another UAE site about someone, and I would never have thought that person would have been looking.

It's not the "worrying about her DH travelling to AD" bit that worries me. I worry when my DH has to do it (and from RAK, not dubai). He texts me to say he's there safely. It's all the other stuff that concerns me.

I'm like simpleas, I don't like to sleep/part on an argument for the same reason. However, you keep mentioning how much you love him - in your own words "to the point of obsession." He knows this and knows that he doesn't have to treat you as an equal because you'll always back down to him. I don't know what the answer is I'm afraid but I'm concerned by the power he seems to hold over you.

To be honest I don't care for these people. If they want to remove themselves from the gene pool, fine. I just despise them for the fact they are more likely than not to take other, innocent people out with them. I'd like to chop their hands off so they CAN'T drive.

The safety notices around the pools at The Lakes said pretty much the same thing - which is the first I knew of it. It's something that should be made widely known because I think the majority of people believe that people do shout, scream and wave their arms about (as did I).

I had 2 of mine removed 2 weeks apart under a local. I had no problems, one didn't even require stitching. It wasn't as bad as I imagined it to be.

Thanks sanddy_dogg. Is the actifry from "tefal" or "t-fal"? If u search it on the net u will find that the cooker has either tefal or t-fal on it. Is t-fal a duplicate? Mine's Tefal. I think T-fal is the same brand but the North American version.

We bought an Actifry recently. It does take about half an hour to cook chips but they're well worth the wait. I haven't been around much to really use it but we like it so far. ETA FRench Fries/chips - yes you can do them from potatoes but it does take quite a bit of time. You have to ensure that you cut them all roughly the same thickness so they cook in the same amount of time and you can't do a huge batch at a time. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 07/06/2011</em>

We had an African Grey like that. He hated men, all of them. We think his problem was that he was captured from the wild (this was about 20 years ago, he was already 40 when we got him and he was passed on to my Mum by an old lady friend when she died). Peter, he was called. Original, eh? I find it quite bizarre to see captive-raised, hand-reared AG's being lovely because it's just so far from the evil little git we had LOL!

I did Dubai to Doha and Doha to Sao Paulo a few days ago. The short flights are the usual. The Sao Paulo flight was excellent, even sitting in the back of the bus. The plane was very new, only 9 seats across instead of the usual 10, slightly wider seats and excellent service. The food wasn't as good as EK and nor was the entertainment system - EK's ICE leaves big shoes to fill. The flight back from DOH to DXB was on an A330 instead of the usual A320 which I think they would use for European routes and it was so-so. If it was a lot cheaper I'd fly them on a European route but it would have to be a HUGE amount cheaper for me to switch from the convenience of EK to QA. For the ultra-long-hauls i'd thoroughly recommend QA.

Qatar flight was great, comfortable plane with 3-3-3 config and great service. Our last flight from DOH to DXB was on an A330 which I suspect is what's used from Qatar to Europe and it didn't compare at all to the 777 used for the Sao Paulo flight. Entertainment system and food not as good as EK. We then flew to Brasilia but there's not much to do in there It's not somewhere I'd go again. It's not a tourist spot and not many people speak English. We were there for a sporting event on Saturday and flew to Rio the following morning. We had almost 3 days in Rio and there was plenty to do there, good restaurants, good bars and plenty of opportunities to just do some people watching. Flight home was as good as flight out. I was on the verge of a panic attack twice on the 1hr flight from Rio but was fine the whole way from Sao Paulo to Doha :) Overall, it was fantastic and we had the trip of a lifetime (got my photo taken with my favourite competitor), was great to have some time alone with DH and we got to do the things we wanted to do. Kids were fine but DD kept texting me with drivel and also with 'problems' which actually weren't, but still upset/annoyed me. Although everything was fine at home I found it to be too long and too far. RD, are you here yet?

The Acacia is very close to Ice Land. The Hilton in the city will be about 20 minutes drive from Ice Land, the beach Hilton about 25 minutes. Not stayed at either but I doubt the Acacia is comparable with the Hilton LOL! Check out http://www.icelandwaterpark.com/ Thy have an offer at Acacia. There's a new Hilton opened opposite the city Hilton called Hilton DoubleTree, check out their rates, may be worth a look.

Hello you! It was fantastic, everything went so well. I blubbed a bit in the car on the way to the airport and also as we were leaving Dubai for Doha. I used the Xanax (and may have had a beer with my dinner) and although they didn't wipe me out or make me completely fearless they did help and I managed to doze a lot - same deal coming home. We had a great time, really enjoyed it but glad we didn't have the kids as it would have been too brutal on them with the amount of travelling we did in such a short space of time. Grandad had everything under control and every was fine. And thanks ;)

I am certain most of you rely on your nannies/maids to do your parenting job. And when it involves you all needing to step in and watch your children it suddenly becomes a problem. Wow! Wrong time of the month or just trying to stir the pot? *newsflash* but some of us don't even have maids (that puts paid to your "most of you" comment). And, sorry to burst your bubble *snort* but most on here who do have maids, rely on them to clean the houses and do the laundry. If you're wanting to have a gripe at those who do rely on the maids to bring up the kids I suggest you look away from the expats posting on here.

Hi, you posted recently about being worried about wearing swimwear in Brazil. I just got back this morning and: 1. Check the weather - it's winter there right now. Weather in Rio was low to mid 20's and apparently is only around 20 in July so you may not be wanting to bare much flesh anyway. Brasilia was just a few degrees warmer but I still didn't feel warm enough to strip off! 2. Rio (if that's where you are going) isn't wall-to-wall babes :)

Hopefully the family and friends she has nearby can provide her with the practical help she will need. You can play your part by being there:- send her an email asking how she is and telling her you're thinking of her. Ask her what she has to do. Call her, text her - just let her now she's in your thoughts and that you're there for her any time she needs to talk. That can be as valuable as practical help. I hope everything goes well for them and her DH is on the road to recovery asap.
