Sk, you're brilliant! This is a great thread..... Any chance you know why buying direct from an airline's ticket o=counter is always more expensive than the online price direct through the airline's website? It really disadvantages those who don't want a credit card, and I was wondering if you knew why? Especially as it is straight through the airline, there is no 3rd party. Also, do you know when the best times are to get cheap tickets? Is there a schedule? I'm cheeky, I know, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to! Thanks SK!!! :) oh and if you are in the UAE and buying from anyone other than a local airline, the sales office does not belong to the airline itself but their general sales agent - who would provide staff wearing the airline's uniform etc - so there is a third party involved even if not immediately apparent.

Thanks SK!!! :) I partly know this one - cost of sale to the airline if you are booking on line is far less than cost per sale of maintaining an office and sales staff; however that is only part and another enormous part is the utterly weird black art of airline pricing, which nobody has ever managed to explain to me in a way I can actually understand. It is supply, demand, forecasting, blah blah - all of which sound fairly straightforward, but the result somehow isn't.

... i.e. "It took so long to get my meal, I hate waiting, why does it take so long?" as opposed to "XXX airline is ****, they left me for days and I hate the food" ;) ... LOL...you're brave! ;) And she's a star :) Very good idea - there are a lot of misconceptions out there. My favourite ever complaint; older lady having flown for the first time wrote in to say how wonderful it all was - but it was very stuffy on the plane and the crew would NOT open the window when she asked them. And not an urban myth, I saw the letter.....! edited by sandfly on 14/04/2012

Throw a meal at me now and again (but awash with wine) and you won't hear a sound from me. I do not understand why I am scared of flying but I've been battling it for over 20 years (I've even done a course which, while effective for a few years, has lost its effect). I am not claustrophic and I understand aerodynamics well enough to know how aircraft fly. I also understand how jet engines work but some stupid part of my brain overrides all the common sense. Turbulence is my biggest trigger, more so since the Air France crash. I'm a nutter and I know it. If you'd only fly with me every time Sky Kitty :) Sanddy, could it be the 'not being in control' thing? I remember a cabin crew flatmate in an earlier life telling me about an enormous squaddy reduced to tears by being a passenger on a plane - seemed to be the complete absence of any control; even as a back seat driver in a car you have the sense of knowing what is happening and being able to say things to the driver. SkyKitty, Ek should be proud of you :)

Thanks anon I heard from friend of mine that CVN is excellent and reasonable fees but am afraid of the meals they offer if it's healthy clean I can't accept this point My children went to both EBN and Yellow Brick Road, which is a 'sister' nursery of CVN. I would 100% recommend you choose EBN.....

as far as I heard, Dr Dukan lost his case against the nutritionist who pointed out his diet could cause serious health problems - http://www.thenational.ae/news/world/europe/creator-of-dukan-diet-loses-libel-case-against-rival - by all means if it works for you, but it doesn't work for everyone.

I want a peronal trainer that has no body fat and is a good example of fitness...is that whom you found? Cost? Does she go to your home or do you need to meet her at a gym? Thank you! you won't find a trainer with no body fat, as a certain amount of body fat is essential to maintain life - and a dead one would not be any use to you. Why not focus on the 'good example of fitness' which seems far more relevant.....?

DinAces, I just wanted to thank you for posting this - just back from visiting City's A&E with DD, remembered seeing positive things on here when I was deciding which hospital to go to (we have been lucky enough to avoid any for the last couple of years); was more than happy with the 'service'.

I checked it manually and got a count of 80. But then I am so not fit so hopefully will get there. But the 100 now, well I'm still excited :) 60-80 is usual; Chocs is obviously either very fit or something is not quite right....

Thanks all! Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to this thread, it's been a busy week and weekend. I think a simple, straight-to-the-point title will be great. I don't know whether it should be PND or the full words, though - does Post Natal Depression Support In Dubai sound a bit long-winded? And do you think people will search for Post Natal Depression or Post Partum Depression? I think if you get it out there enough, flyers to places where mums would take their new babies (anywhere that does baby weighing, vaccinations etc for a start) it doesn't really matter what you call it, so long as it is reasonably obvious what it does. Very best of luck :)

Yes, I would, but I'd definitely consider someplace close. Top on my list would be Club Med Tunisia, the Kempinski at the Dead Sea in Jordan, or someplace in Oman. Possibly even someplace really close like Fujairah your husband could drive you - and come back to pick you up. Alternatively, there are many spring camps here that would provide a bit of a break for you and them. Travelling on my own with them - yes, do that regularly with my two (now 5 and 4 and getting easier!), staying on my own for 2 weeks, probably not (but that is just me.....) - might do a week though, and if I did it would be somewhere like Club Med where people actually expect and are encouraged to mix with each other, rather than a regular hotel (and where there are babysitters etc so you can at least occasionally have a nice meal at a sensible time!)

and there are people who are oddly always sick on the days of big sporting events etc. How long have you been in your job, Beebers? Does the boss know you yet? If he does, he is probably just a tool (and you might want to start looking elsewhere). If he doesn't - if you had a new employee who was taking a lot of sick time, wouldn't you wonder a little bit?

I don't understand the logic in having sick employees come to work, but maybe I am missing something here? Would you rather that your co-workers or employees came to the office with a contagious viral bronchial/pneumonia type condition, or that they stayed home the 5 or so days? Surely having key people be ill is an inconvenience to business, but why risk getting the rest of the office sick, or cause the employee to be sick longer because they cannot rest? Grrrrrr! Are you talking about something specific? I assumed this was a response to something (reading in 'recent posts') but it seems to be an OP... are you talking about an employer *making* someone come to work with *pneumonia*? have never heard of that, here or anywhere else. Someone thinking they are indispensable and struggling on, yes, probably....

I've flown several times during both my pregnancies and during all trimesters. As long as you're not classes as a high risk (I.e. previous pregnancy complications) that could effect this pregnancy, then there is no reason you can't fly. Just follow the advise all airlines give you by drinking plenty of fluids, and try and move around as much as possible. Just be careful when lifting heavy luggage etc, get someone else to do it for you. flew to Aus and back on my own with a 10 month old and about 3 months pregnant - doctors not bothered at all and everything was fine, (had a little wobble at Sydney airport as another flight came in which was presumably from somewhere where queueing is not part of the culture - with buggy and luggage I was actually going backwards in the passport queue; however a very nice man from the department of agriculture or something equally unlikely came and rescued me and took me out through a different line... and helped me find a taxi, he was a star!) I think with regard to the lifting luggage etc you have to listen to your body and not do things which would strain it - some women do seem to take the micky a bit with the 'oh I can't lift X' (or the 'oh you shouldn't be lifting Y') - obviously heaving 30kg bags around would be a bit silly, unless you do it all the time, but you don't need to act like an invalid either.

It is technically legal but no medical professional is allowed to be present with you at your home, which makes the legality of it invalid. Really?? Very interesting. I was always told (by OB's, midwives, doulas, AW hospital staff) that it's illegal. It's all in the details I suppose. :) well it sounds like for the OBs, midwives, etc it is illegal - and it would make no sense to make 'giving birth at home' illegal given how quickly some labours go.... any more than you could make 'giving birth in the car' illegal! as someone who had absolutely no external signs of the fetal distress that led to a real 'emergency' CS, you wouldn't catch me going for a home birth unless I lived approximately next door to the hospital anyway, but I do think it is a shame that those who want a proper (ie medically supported) home birth can't have one.

I know there are other camps, but as I work and am therefore (a) already late by the time I've dropped off kids (camps never seem to start as early as school) and (b) dependent on my housemaid in a taxi for pick up, I really don't want to be going all over the place; having the camp at the school has worked very well for us; it is the only location that we can reach without involving main roads. At least it is a short break... maybe will just let them hang out at home.

AA, not sure about companies normally shielding people - reputable companies probably do; have come across other situations where a business owner has 'his' cheques signed by an office manager or similar - when the cheque bounces, it is then the office manager's passport which is held by the police, etc. Sad.

I'm a single mother in Dubai, and I know a few others - there are definite advantages to being here (availability of help in particular); but whether you are single or a couple you need to be able to pay the bills - all the issues re school fees etc below apply equally to married parents, one of you, or the pair of you jointly, need to be able to afford the bills. I haven't come across anywhere where women don't get the same benefits as men doing the same job, though am not in any way disbelieving DesertBoot, just that it is certainly not like that everywhere. I'm not completely convinced that as a legal PA you would get the package you need, however - but the recruitment consultant, if she is any good, should be able to give you an idea of what is on offer. Once you know that (salary and benefits), you can start working out budgets and see if they add up. Good luck.

Just wanted some of your experiences on which malls/places they have found BF friendly in Dubai (and which ones you have NOT!). I haven't started pumping yet- and am hoping thats not the only way to be able to do more than 2-3 hour sojourns with the baby! breastfed two in coffee shops all round town, never had a problem.

Just wondering if anyone can help with some info, a friend of mine who is a language teacher is considering a move to the UAE (Dubai or AD) She has taught English (as a foreign language) in Spain and Korea. I am not sure where to direct her to see what job opportunities there are in this country for that kind of thing? Any Suggestions? I was thinking perhaps the British Council as a starting point, or maybe a big company like EK as there are such a lot of nationalities, so they may have English language requirements as part of their training? TIA the Aviation College certainly used to teach English, don't know if it still does. I think most companies would have 'grasp of English' as a requirement for hiring rather than something they would teach?

Not a class thing or frequent flyer thing, we were economy never travelled with EK beforea and we got compensation with a free flight, i think it depends how firmly youstate its not acceptable? it is supposed to depend on how long after your original arrival time the replacement flight is due to get you in. Eg if you were flown to Heathrow instead of Gatwick and the bus to Gatwick was due to arrive within a couple of hours of the Gatwick flight, you wouldn't get the same compensation as if you were delayed for a long time (the flight could have been a couple of hours late anyway). All airlines have a policy in respect of compensation, don't think any of them say 'if they shout louder' :) Ok so we were due to go on the 0300 departure, they overbooked asked us to change to the 0755 departure same day, we got the compensation of a free return flight? Maybe we were lucky and we just had someone who couldnt be bothered with the lengthy discussion we were having :) :) although I would not swear to this I think the cut off is around two hours.

Tilly, the KHDA is perfectly aware that grades (US and IB) and years (English) don't tally. A friend's daughter just transferred last summer; she had finished Grade 3 at IB and went into Year 5 in a BC school. So it is perfectly possible to change later.

the soft spot should be getting small shouldn't it?? Maybe the paed you saw is not up to date on the growth charts for breastfed babies; I would definitely see someone else before following the advice about formula etc; and of course you want to know about the baby's chest. Maybe try a GP (family doctor) at the Dubai London clinic as your next step rather than a paed as such? unless anyone knows of a good one who is more accessible than Umm Suqueim?

do you need a paediatrician? a family doctor is not a paed as such (in the UK you would only see a paediatrician if there was a serious issue, most things would be handled by the family doctor). I don't use DLC but am pretty sure that I saw on here that Dr. Smiley has left the UAE. Maybe try posting on here some of what is worrying you; other people might have been through it and be able to point you in an appropriate direction.

Just reading this thread confuses me! Doesn't take much though! Anyway I would like to know what is the diff between FS2 and year 1? Is FS2 reception but just not called that? We're from scotland and reception year relates to our p1, first year of proper 'school' if you get me. So do you complete FS2 at a nursery and not a school here if you are following English curriculum? My daughter will be 5 in the november and back home she would have started school that August passed. So here when would she start? The september before she's 5 or later? Also FS1, is this where they would go when they are 3? We would like to send our duaghter to TCG, then JBS I think they are in the same company? Any help would be useful!! Yes FS2 is reception. JBS is an IB school so it doesn't operate with 'reception'; KG1 would be the IB equivalent of reception but instead of starting it when you are 4, you start in September of the calendar year in which you turn 4 (which is obviously not when you start P1, but is the first year of 'proper school' in the IB system

Surely the cut off dates relate to the curriculum not the school ownership? BC is Sept, IB is end Dec. If you transfer from IB to BC, even the KHDA recognises the different grade system, and that KG1 in IB is equivalent to yr 1 in BC, grade 3 = yr 4, etc.

tanya, I would say that kiwispiers' suggestion was actually fairly sensible - might sound odd, but wee ones can't find their own dummies too easily; you can't attach them to them at night, so having lots around them (so there is a reasonable chance of them grabbing one and shoving it in themselves) really might help you get a more peaceful night. I certainly had 4 or so dummies going at one stage!

I've unfortunately had a few of these bites recently and always have a bad reaction to them. They usually take about a week to calm down. The pharmacist recommended that I use Fenistil Gel to rub on them and also take an antihistamine which helps. I find that an Evian spray, kept in the 'fridge so that it is really cold, also soothes it. Hope it feels better soon - you certainly have my sympathy ! fenistil and antihistamines are both great if you are itching. When the bite is painful rather than itchy, they don't seem to do anything (for me); presumably the pain is from a different type of reaction. If you've got both (pain and itchy) I guess you need to throw everything at it!

don't know for now, but at the time, the best thing seems to be bicarbonate of soda made into a paste and smeared on (because the ant 'bite' is acidic). My poor DS managed to be stung by one when he was lying on his front on the grass. It got him in just the worst place possible; poor lad. These ants make me forget any eco, green, whatever, principles I have; I am quite happy to throw the fiercest chemicals the pest control people have in their arsenal at their lairs just to KEEP THEM AWAY.
