I would advise you to stay clear of Al Ahliya agency...although theyve been around for a while, I have recently had a very very bad experience with 2 of their maids. I have had to pay approx AED 20K and both the ladies had a horrible attitude and even though their maids were at fault, I have not received a single penny back saying the replacement maid had no guarantee and even though she refused to work, they didnt give us our money back and were refusing to accept her. I had a big showdown with them last night...the result being I am still maidless after 3 months of trying and waiting...with AED 20K lost.

Not sure where my original post has gone, but I will still post the fact that my nanny named Sri Susilawati Petahudin of indonesian origin with a valid till October 2015 has absconded from my house. She has her passport and Emirates ID. If you intend to hire or give her shelter please beware as she will become illegal soon. Dear Admin - there are no passport details above please dont remove it. People need to know who they are letting into their house.... edited by SanRan on 18/01/2015 edited by SanRan on 18/01/2015

Thank you for your replies...I have locked every door in the house but not sure if I can sleep peacefully for some time....the police wont take a complaint because she hasnt 'stolen', her visa is valid and she had her documents (if it was a case of 'abduction'...her valuables/passport/Emirates ID would not be missing)she left the house while my parents were sleeping in the morning....Hence, this is not a police case, but a case for immigration which can only be solved tomorrow morning. Yorky...in response to your comment....I have not said anything wrong about the nanny except that she has run away and have warned ppl against illegal shelter...I have not given any gory details or defamed her as...infact I have been open to say she hasnt taken anything. There are no sides here. It is an unemotional warning and this forum is not about judging, its about sharing information that may help or prevent harm to others.

Dear Starfishalicja, I have been to both Dr Marc as well as Dr Eisa. I suggest you take more than one opinion. Although Dr Marc is very good and thorough he is more into innovative and ground breaking surgery. He has suggested surgery for my daughter's legs, while 2 other pediatric orthopedic surgeons (outside of the UAE) said it was too early and we need to wait and see if it is required later. My daughter is just 8...may be your scenario is different, but I just thought I could help. I am not saying either of the Doctors are good or bad...they are both highly regarded but sadly, nowadays being a doctor is more like art and not a science anymore. Best of luck

She fixed my daughter's hair beautifully - and it looks amazing...given that Juan had not left much on for her to deal with, but she has really done an outstanding job...and I didnt have to beg to set her hair ! The whole experience was just great and the salon is so nice and quite and clean....have another appt booked for the little one soon.... So thank you EW ladies, as always your expert advise has really helped me...now more than a few times :)

My medical insurance is quite good so not worried about that. I have seen specialists in the past without being referred by a GP and it has never been a problem. My concern is who to see - a GP? a neurologist?

Trust me, I am in tears with the AED 8,000 bill and have no clue what caused it. I have switched off all the water heaters. trying to keep a/cs to minimum...someone said it might be a water machine which is on all day - we've just bought the house and water pressure is great so we have a feeling that there is a machine which is on constantly and may be that's what is causing the hiked bill...still discovering though...

We live in a 5 bedroom villa, no pool, very small garden (only a 3m x 4m patch) as rest of the area is paved and our bill last month was AED 8,000 - why - I have no idea ! The killer is electricity, but I still cant figure how it can be so high as we hardly use the a/cs especially when inlaws were around as they constantly felt cold...Im still tryin gto figure why this is so high...someone said it could the new TVs (2 new LED TVs) that uve installed and do not switch off from the main switch so have started with that now.... edited by SanRan on 09/09/2013

I have seen basic acrylic paints in Lulu in Barsha, the top floor. I have seen good ones (but a bit more expensive) in a stationery shop at the Beach Center mall...the shop is a stationery and craft shop on the ground floor (there are 2 of them) on the right side as soon as you enter the mall between the Automatic restaurant and the small automatic cafeteria.

I thought so tooo....although our walls are really big, and we got 2 walls in 3 rooms (but the long wall which was double the breadth) and 4 walls in 1 room (but only 2 full walls in this one and hardly 1 metre on each side of the other 2 walls) but still, it felt like a bit much and I didnt have the time to check for cheaper ones...he also told me that because you have come through a business recommendation it is more expensive as we are charging higher than if you would have come to us personally 1

A guy called Imran on this number 050 940 8375 put up our wallpapers for us. Did a great job...I cant tell if he is expensive or cheap (took roughly AED 4000 for 8 walls which I felt was a bit much) but I just paid him what he asked as one of DH's subcontractors sent him and I couldnt argue. He Has a shop in Deira and apparently they charge by square meter and thats why, even if the wall was just a bit of the ceiling/ becoz the breadth is the same as the other wall, the price of fitting it was the same (Not sure if it makes sense). call him and iron it out. PS. You can tell him the lady in Meadows 9 recommended him so he should give you a good price (apparently the subcontractor gives him business so he shd be motivated to do a good job at a reasonable price). edited by SanRan on 03/09/2013

Let me tell you johjoh, its a madhouse as far as kid's hairdressers are concerned. I called everyone I could to get an appt for my girls and they were all 'booked'/busy! so I took them to an adult's salon in Satwa (simply because I was driving by) and got it done. But before I finally got it cut, I had one adult's salon quote AED 100 per child (AED 50 to cut and AED 50 to blowdry it). If you still want to try, there is a kid's place at Fun City at Batuta Mall at the play area and another one in MOE in magic planet - you have to go and wait your turn and depending on how many ppl have come before you have to wait it out. Also, there are a couple in JBR (Tickles and giggles are good, have tried them twice before and another one, kidville - not sure of this one). There is the hello Kitty Spa at the Town Center and Kids Cut at Beach Center mall in Jumeirah (which was closed yesterday!). Hope it helps Btw, Tried Shiama/Bianca when it use to be in meadows and it was a disaster - she cut her hair so badly, it was all crooked and kept chopping it off before she had a it right - and it was sooo short - it was not funny...so will never ever go to them again. edited by SanRan on 01/09/2013

Hi Bralarke, Your husband sounds quite similar to mine, with the sleep apnea, blocked nasal passage and not being able to swim, workaholic....my experience says, he needs to find what destresses him....for my husband, the more I tried to think of ways for him to destress, he believed the opposite. It reached a point that if he was not working, it stressed him....so he would wake up at 4:00 and 5:00 inthe morning and start working....however, what was different for him was that he liked running and cycling, so slowly, when he woke up at odd hours, he would just go running...maybe he needs to find something to do which is not time bound or requires time commitment because that can also cause anxiety. My DH did not like massages....so he needs to find something to do when he wakes up at odd hours edited by SanRan on 29/08/2013

So after the reviews on here I called Khaleel this week. I have 2 arm chairs that need to be upholstered, however I am not sure if it is me or he didnt have anything that I liked. All his 'leather' (or fake leather as he called it) was tacky and he hardly had any fabrics/patterns. Finally, I chose a 'fake' seude and he quoted me a price of AED 2000 - for this price I can buy 2 new sofas (I have checked the shops to see what is the cost of replacement as well). All in all, I was very disappointed - he did not even budge from the price and in the end said this is my price, if you are interested pls call me, becoz I am not going to lower the price (as I asked him to think about it and lower the price a little bit and call me back). May be the fame has got to his head as alot of us are calling him and he has enough work and is running out of materials

I always bag my own groceries but there are days when I just can not bend and I ask for help. However, I have seen that when I bag my own groceries (as I am as OCD as TDB), the lady at the counter rings everything and shoves all the groceries while I am bagging them (and may be not as fast as she would like me to be) and then sits there tapping the counter waiting for me to pay, instead of helping me bag the rest. It really drives me up the wall and this is one of the main reasons I have stopped shopping at Carrefour. Jumping the queue is another pet peeve and my DH is embarrassed when I make a big deal about how rude it is....I always (well almost) get into a fight over this....its like you are invisible and the one jumping the queue is the most important person on earth.... Talking about coins, it makes me laugh when attendants at petrol station (at the shop inside) ask for change....and I always turn around and say you deal in cash only and you dont have change?? gggrrrr

I had this issue a few years ago as well when I had a boss who thought I was taking time off and having a ball at home, while my children were sick. Is there an option that you can work from home. That way you can be with the children and work while they are napping. What you can do is ask her to take your time off from your annual leave because as per the local laws, sick leave is applicable of if you are sick, not your children. This should shut her up. edited by SanRan on 18/06/2013

WHAT the ****?? your comment about the boxes just reminded me to check the quotation again..it does say AED 10 per box and NOT AED 25 per box, which is what the guy said on the last day of the move which made my husband angry saying why are you guys standing outside and chatting and wasting time, when we still have like 10 boxes to open and all my family is working... They didnt have hangers for hanging clothes in the wadrobe - so my DH brought all his suits in his car so that the ironing does not get ruined. I packed my whole dressing table myself to avoid them just dumping things in boxes.. I tipped all the guys AED 50 (which were 9 guys) and 2 -3 of them with additional AED 100. I am so not happy right now...so they were not the cheapest, they werent professional, they misbehaved, were lazy and LIED! edited by SanRan on 18/06/2013

This happened to us once when we were in springs and we realised it was because Emaar hadnt trimmed the shrubbery outside our house and therefore, the rats used these to climb into our garden. This was a couple of years ago when Emaar stopped maintaining the common area becoz landlords werent paying their service fees. We got our gardener to cut the flower shrubs so that they wouldnot be able to climb through that. Also, we kept bricks under the garden door because there was enough space for them to come in through that. Hope it helps.

I so wish I had seen this thread before this weekend. I am not sure why my search for movers did not throw out this thread. Anyway, my experience was not good at all. Yes they were accommodating but very very pushy the first day they left early. Then their curtain guy took a whole day to remove and put up 3 curtains - one of which is 10 cm above the ground, becoz I wasnt watching and then misbehaved and said had to leave at 5. The second day, started well but towards the end, everyone of us was working whereas the 9 guys were standing outside and chatting and my DH just went crazy at them....Later we were told that one of the guys was constantly hounding the owner (who was moving out) for his goods - and they had taken his number to co-ordinate our curtain fixing...thats not professional at all. All in all, all ends that ends well but I expected better for the price I paid (and they were more expensive than the other quotes we had).

Yes, PRK was more expensive even though it is the 'older' form of Lasik. But it seems to be the better way to go if you have a very thin cornea and results are much better/vision is sharper - so I have been told, even though healing from PRK takes longer. To put in perspective, I was in pain and cldnt open my eyes for 2 whole days after the surgery, whereas one of my cousins went to meet his friends the evening he had surgery. However, my vision came back much faster and sharper than my cousin and he had to go back for 'quick fix after a couple of months. I know a couple of ppl who have been to moorfields as well and are happy as well.

Hey, I did my lasik at Atlanta Vision 2 years ago. It was with the american doctor that visits the clinic once a month - not sure if it the same Doctor. However, there is a Syrian Dr called Dr Huda who did the check up. It could take anything between 30mins to an hour. During the check up, they put some drops and have to wait until they can check your eyes. After the check up, you need to wait for sometime before your vision is back to normal, as the drops are some sort of aneasthetic and you will have blurred vision and you shdnt drive. I suggest you take a taxi to and back from the clinic. Depending on the condition of your cornea, they suggest what sort of lasik you will need and they may not suggest surgery immediately. For example I had to wait for 2 months (and had 2 checkups) before they decided I could have the surgery. Reason being, I was wearing contacts for so long, that my cornea had an impression of the lenses and they needed to see if my cornea was really thin or whether it was just the prolonged use of lenses. I had my first appointment in June and the surgery was finally in August and during this time, they suggested I shouldnt wear contacts to ensure that my cornea was better/thicker. Finally they decided that since my cornea was thin, they will not perform the newer form of Lasik and did PRK which is more painful after the surgery and they had to insert a lense which was removed 2 days after the surgery. But the pain was nothing compared to the comfort I am in now and it was one of the best decisions I have made. Go with an open mind, dont expect that they will give you an immediate appointment for the surgery and see how it goes. Infact, someone I know actually managed to claim this from his insurance. I couldnt. Best of luck!

It was in a laptop bag behind the driver's seat and has been taken out if and the bag left zipped up again. I am paranoid abt locking doors and cars.....what is unnerving is that I make one mistake and it seems like negligence to everyone else but somehow I just feel that some was watching and has taken advantage of the opportunity ....which silly becoz without pad and a power cord for a fairly old laptop, the machine is useless and the this doesn't realize that and that's why I wonder who is so stupid and looking for such opportunities in a ' safe' community....perhaps someone who works somewhere close by...this makes me nervous... edited by SanRan on 24/05/2013

They have a football pitch for older chidlren and a soft play area for younger kids...not sure of the prices though, I think its per hour, but you can check the website out: http://www.kidzventure.ae/community-center/drop-in-facilities/ Forgot to mention, there is a metro that takes you to Ibn Batuta mall edited by SanRan on 21/04/2013

I had a greeaaaaaaaaaat time. It was my first time at this event. Children were happy at the kids' corner getting their face painted and nails done and I dont think the event is meant for the children to be there all day. We took the children for a couple of hours, they had there dinner there on the grass took them home, put them to bed and then came back to enjoy. The food was good and just the right portions so you dont end up over eating and try a little bit of everything. I think a couple of outlets had burgers but there was alot more choice than just burgers...My favourite was the steak with salad at Asado, but I tried different things from Nobu, Ruth's, Mango tree... May be we went on Saturday late afternoon and crowd was thinning after spending the weekend there, but we had a good time...
