Yes that is right, tenant does need to register this otherwise how would the rent committee know that was the eviction reason or reason for leaving. I don't know if its called rent commitee or Rera, but they have an office in Deira and we did register a complaint against our LL who tried to evict us and we won. My hubby actually went to court for this. He had to renew the contract as is, not with a 12 month notice, so at the end of this current contract he has to renew our lease again, within the rental brackets of the calculator at that time. It actually was the real estate agent that was trying to do all this, the landlord never even showed up in court, we had to place an ad in an arabic newspaper to summon him to court, he still did not show. so they ruled in his absence for the contract to be renewed under the same conditions, the rent wasn't even eligble for an increase, and our court fees were to be deducted from rent amount we needed to pay as we won. edited by Sanzeveria on 17/11/2013 edited by Sanzeveria on 17/11/2013

We took our LL to court as he tried to kick us out in order to increase the rent, we went to Rera who were very helpful and told us LL cannot make us leave unless he wants to move in himself or wants to renovate the place, in which case he needs to give a 12 months notice first. If his reason is he wants to move in himself, he cannot rent it out for 12 months, meaning he cannot register a tenancy contract for 12 months and he can only get DEWA in his own name for the next 12 months, so there is no way out. If he says he wants to renovate he needs to get prior permission from the municipality for the reno, before he can give the 12 months notice. So we took it to court and won. go to Rera for any issues, they will tell you what to do about it.

I lived in Dubai a few years back and used to buy clothing and lingerie from UK from companies like Bravissimo. At that time, I never had a charge on my parcels by customs in Dubai and bought plenty. I have moved back to Dubai recently and just had my first parcel from Pepperberry clothing delivered with a charge for AED108 as duty. did it really state duty? If you leave a package for a long time at the post office they'll charge you for 'storage', could it have been that? My last order to my PO BOX was 200 Euro and there was no duty charged, this is about a month back...

My diners Club card used to give me access to a lot of lounges, some even first class lounges.... I don't know if they still do as stopped using it since it's hardly anywhere accepted as a CC card

Airplanes are very dirty. . This would scare me most! I gave birth in a hospital - very reputable one - in Australia and got a bacterial infection caused by labour... this doesn't happen very often but it can, imagine if this happens in a clean and sterilized environment what can happen if you give birth in a dirty airplane? The infection resulted in me having to stay in the hospital for a week on heavy antibiotics, and what's worse, my newborn was affected as well and had to go through numerous tests and medication before they finally got rid of his exteme high fever....lucky we both came out unharmed in the end, but I wouldn't even dream of risking to give birth in a unclean place such as a plane... Keep your own and your baby's safety a priority over a couple of weeks of 'lost maternity leave'.. edited by Sanzeveria on 05/03/2012

As far as I know it is not allowed. I think the maximum time you can fly is 3 hours beyond 7 months, ask your DR. they might not even given you a certificate to fly that long after 7 months.... I went back to Australia to delivery my second one too, and had to fly at 7 months , I did need a dr. certificate that I was fit to fly according to Emirates, but they never asked for it. I think they won't allow you much later due to risk of getting into labour coz of the cabin pressure (someone ones told me this, don't know if it is true, but it would make sense I guess). Also, start looking for pressure stockings for good blood circulation during the flight, you're going to need those!

blimey !! sorry but you all sound so tight-fisted..quibbling over a couple of quid for an ice-cream...in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter ? guess it's just me.... It's not that, it's the fact that they fail to mention there is no longer a kids scoop when I ask for one... At cold stone 2 kids scoops are AED 20 only AED 4 difference, I am not going to walk to the other end of the mall to make that ''great'' saving, but I do mind being ripped off by staff failing to communicate to me, plus a regular scoop is far too big, sure I'll finish it off for my 2 year old, but my almost 6yr old happily scoops it all up, I find that size unnecessary for her age. The cold stone kids portion is smaller than the regular BR size...

Ah, so that in all their stores now? Very strange and bad too IMO, I do not need my 2 and 6 year old to eat a big scoop of icecream, a kids portion is just about right. I guess with so many other stores around they loose out on business... a price increase made sense as AED 6 was very cheap but to cancel it all together is just plain stupid if you ask me. Oh well, guess that clears it up, BR is out, CS is in. lol

I fully agree with you. I have lights-out for my children at 7:15 pm and that rarely changes, even on weekends. [u'>I'm always curious about people who don't eat with their kids thoug[/u'>h. Does that mean you make two dinners or do you just reheat the food for you and DH? Do you also do two clean-ups every night? I wonder about that too, I think family meal times are very important, it also teaches children table manners, to sit down until every one has finished and it gives us time to talk together about what we all did today. We often get compliments from total strangers when dining out with the kids (5 and almost 2)as they are very well behaved in restaurants which I credit to our family meal times. to go back to original post, 6.30 seems a bit early, but if your kids need that amount of sleep and it works for you, that's great. My almost 2 year old is in bed by 7.30, the 5 year old by 8, sometimes 8.30. Our routine is dinner around 5.30 - 6, then bath (they have a bath together and play for about 30 min in the tub), then story time, then LO goes to sleep by 7.30. DD will, then watch 10 -15 minutes TV, we then read a last small story and off to bed around 8 for her. edited by Sanzeveria on 12/02/2012

Any change the person your husband took over from is Swiss and moved with IBM to China? just asking a DD's friend at school just moved to China, his dad was exec at IBM too.. Anyway, I can highly recommend Raffles South, it's a Montessori school (for KG 1 and KG2) from KG 2 onwards it is UK curriculum or IB at their West Campus.

We did the whole nine yards, photo in traditional clothes, henna, camel ride, belly dancing etc. 6 hours in total. normally it cost around 500 but we got it through dealsnmeals ,new daily deal site like groupon etc.

Hi there - I have a friend who works at Ski Dubai and he said Santa will be there from 18-24 Dec. from 5-10pm in the evening. We 'met' Santa there last year and got a great photo with him and Mrs. Claus. Does you friend know if it's the same couple (Mr & mrs Claus) as last year? They were so lovely... Also, is there going to be a breakfast with Santa again like last year? Tkx

I just love love love the Oilily nappy bags! I used them with my daughter all the time, but now with my son I find them too girlish, so am using a black and white Juicy couture bag. Oilily is located in Dubai Mall near the 2nd level foodcourt

Hi, I understand your situation completely, my hubby grew up as an Expat in Kuwait and studied there but all his papers got lost during the Gulf war, hence he could not show proof of any type of education.... very hard when trying to find a decent job and worse when trying to obtain a visa as management positions require papers! Anyway, my hubby now runs his own company, which is not related at all to your hubby's line of work, but he likes to talk to him nevertheless as he's been there and maybe they can work something out. Please send me a mail on smaenen at g mail dotcom.

Can you tell me a bit more info about the one at Ski Dubai? did you pay to go in? did you geta pix or a gift or just meet him, is there a q inside to meet him and can you remember what kind of times he was there? Thanx Most of the time they are inside Ski Dubai, so you do need to go in (pay regular entry). There is also breakfast with Santa at the restaurant right in front of it (forgot name) thats where we had pictures taken with Mr & Mrs Claus last year. I think it was around 200 for the 4 of us (2 adults 2 little kids, incl breakfast buffet, nothing fancy but not too shabby either). It's a gorgeous picture with Ski Dubai in the background, next to a nice tree, looks like it was taken in a cosy cold country somewhere in Europe!

Hospitality workers don't get them off either... not on the day itself, but they do get a day-in-lieu, as per UAE labour law, and so should a home helper, They are humans too! I am shocked as how low people here think of their maids... my goodness they are the people that you trust to look after your kids and home, but ''they don't deserve a day off because me as SAHM doesn't get one either....'' wow, that's very sad! edited by Sanzeveria on 21/11/2011

Well said! Ok here is the situation as I see it. She has been offered a job by you, working 5 days a week for "x" salary and has accepted it on those terms. She is now being asked to work an additional day for no extra pay, would you feel it was fair if your employer did the same to you?. You will need to compensate her for the extra day. She has asked for money in advance, you have no obligation to agree to this, no problem for you to say no. Presumably you told her she would get an annual airfare, some people choose to give this, others only give what the law requires, if you promised it, you have to deliver. She is assuming she can eat your food, no idea what you agreed to or if you discussed it at all. If her salary is intended to cover her food completely be specific and perhaps provide her with her own fridge in her room. Many maids do eat the family food so she can be forgiven for assuming its ok of you haven't told her otherwise. She doesn't want to work on public holidays, neither would I :), if you expect her to work them you should offer her alternative days off to compensate, again you have agreed to something and so its you who is reneging on a promise, which is unfair regardless of how well you are paying her. If it was never discussed then you would have to defer to the law as far as what she can fairly expect. It sounds a bit like you have agreed to a lot of things and now decided you could/should have negotiated harder, the fact is you didn't so its hardly your maid's fault if you now think you could have got her for less. Don't expect a maid to be a mind reader either, you need to be extremely clear on what you expect and do not expect from her and what you will provide. I would suggest you and your husband decide what you really need and then negotiate that with her in respect to the extras she is asking for. You need to treat her as you would want/expect your employer to treat you, with honesty and integrity. If you don't stand by your word, how does that reflect on you?

I loved the ski Dubai Santa last year, it is Mr and Mrs Claus, they are a senior couple and absolutely lovely, they looked so real I almost started to believe in Santa again. I've been googling Xmas tree lighting ceremonies and the like but no results... if anyone's knows about Santa events please update, I will do so also. edited by Sanzeveria on 21/11/2011

We are in Lake shore and it is a lovely building indeed, well maintained and spacious apartments. This is why we didn't go for Marina also, as 2 bed apartments there were all so tiny! Have you checked Dubizzle, there are usually quit a few lake shore adds around, the service elevators is used for moving in and out almost daily so you never know. The one thing I do not like about JLT is they keep coming up with new rules to extract more money from landlords/tenants, last year it was the chiller charges all of a sudden, with charge backs since you moved in... crazy. This year it is parking fee's, it seems like from Dec or Jan we need to pay 2000 for 1 car or 5000 for 2 cars if we want an access card to our own clusters parking... this is insane too as the apartment came with a basement parking in the tower.... no one is sure when it will take effect, but they are installing gates everywhere so I guess it won't be long. Anyway, if I see any movement here, I'll check it out and let you know! good luck

Those classes in JBR sound good too, the ones I got are in Al Ghazal Mall (Jumeia 1, Al Diyafa street/road), we got 8 lessons in total as bought 2 vouchers with 4 lessons each for AED 88 through dealsNmeals.com, thought that was a pretty cool offer too. If DD sticks to it, might look into moving lessons to JBR afterwards as its a bit closer to us, as long as it is not too formal. But we're already doing 1800 worth of ASA's per term, so don't wanna add something too expensive, what are the normal rates there? Any recommendation for the outfit, where to buy for not too expensive? Thanks ladies!

I joined about 9 weeks ago, and lost 5KG so far... I went really good the first few weeks, kept updating my points tracker daily but then thought I 'got it' didn't need to calculate points all the time...well as a result I haven't lost much in the past 5 weeks.... So am back on today, filling out the tracker and following it properly. I think if you are disciplined enough to keep your tracker updated (great Iphone app by the way but only works with UK and USA subscriptions) you will do great. I am going for another 5 KG by Xmas.... hopefully! If I reach that, I am half way to my target:cool:

Possibly yes, I know of people who's kids have been on waiting lists for a couple of years now... just ridiculous really! I think if the government would make schools return the deposit if no place can be offered within one year these lists would become a **** of a lot shorter! Anyway, if you have a preferred school, yes do sign up ASAP. If you or hubby work for a large company it may give you a shortcut on the wait-list at some school (they have agreements with those companies), so its worthed to check with the HR department of your or hubby's work. I got really lucky, got my daughter got straight into the school I wanted, as I wanted Montessori for her (which for Kg 1 and 2 is only at Raffles South). It' actually one of the few schools that has space to expand, they opened 8 new KG1/2 classes this year, so your chances are better there, but it all depends on the curriculum you want. But IMO Great school, highly recommend!

Hello ladies, anyone know where to buy reasonable priced ballet clothes? Since 2 friends in my 5YO class are doing ballet she likes their outfits and now wants to do ballet too... She's doing quit a few other ASA's already so I told her she has to wait for next term but now found a fantastic deal at AED 22 per class only so the tooth-fairy is bringing ballet classes tonight, lol. But I kinda feel the novelty will wear off soon enough so don't really want to splurge on a AED 500 outfit that's gonna end up in the back of the cupboard after a few lessons... Any suggestions?

From what I hear it is due to liquor license not being issued yet... same for Jamie olivers' place, it doesn't have a liquor license either but they opened already.. but don't waste your time going there, food is less than average, big HUGE dissapointment! Pretty sure Jamie is just lending his name to the place, I doubt he ever tasted any of his dishes, if he did then he should walk out in shame! anyway HRC should open soon, cannot wait either!

Go to Wasl Hospital!! They have all the state of the art equipment, and the only hospital to have FULL facilities, like premature care etc, so let's hope all will go smooth with your delivery, but if there are any serious complications you will end-up in WASL anyway as they are the only hospital authorized to deal with serious complications. A good friends neighbour was an American man in charge of given hospitals in Dubai a certain international qualification certificate, not sure how or what, but what I was told is that it was the most most acclaimed status a hospital could have, and AL WASL was the first and IS the only hospital in Dubai that had this certificate for all their departments. Another friend stayed in al Wasl for an emergency appendix operation for her 3 year old and the care was amazing! I visited them and must say I was impressed! Myself i went back to Australia to give birth, but if I would have known about the care at al Wasl before, I wouldn't have made the trip and delivered here. ETA: I did my prenatal care at Belhoul European on Al diyafa street, and they were great. And my Ultra sounds at the Fetal Medicine in Dubai Health care city. (they could tell I was having a boy at 13 weeks - Dr told me he was 85% sure, and it was a boy indeed). edited by Sanzeveria on 31/01/2011
