Hi Ladies, I would like to post some presents to family in Western Australia. I just looked up some price/quote info online from the DHL website and almost fainted. So it would be great if you could suggest the best option for me to get the gifts there - what service do you regularly use? Does it work out a lot cheaper using Emirates Post services? And if so, does anyone know roughly how long they would then take to arrive at their destination? As a side note: I would like to be able to track the parcels from here to there. Thanks for any tips you can share. Sarah. Hi Sarah Joy Happy to help! My husband is going to be in VIC early next week and we can take your parcel and post it to WA via AUSPOST (so long you pay for local charges in Aust). Do get in touch via forum if you still need help. Cheers edited by AusJor on 09/10/2012 Hi AusJor, That is so extremely kind and generous of you! I will have a look into the skynet prices first before taking you up on the offer. Thank you :) :) :) No worries! Suitcase is not very full so weight is not a problem for him. So long it will pass strict Aust customs :) :) Hah - very familiar with aussie customs. I wish I encountered that same 'not very full' suitcase situation as your hubby when I travelled! :)

Hi Kelly, I understand now! What an awesome idea as something to send home. I have not ventured to the 'camel market' - but am now interested to look it up :) camel market is fabulous - one of my most favourite things to do! http://britneyofarabia.blogspot.com/2011/06/getting-hump-in-al-ain.html That is an awesome write-up...thank you for sharing :) "Al Ain is a beautiful place about an hour outside of Dubai" That is going to be one long and expensive taxi trip! If I do get to go out there and have a look around - I hope I will only see very happy and well looked after prized camels (fingers tightly crossed). Hey Kelly, Is there a way I can enter an email address into this blog site and receive the updates/new entries via email?

I send gifts all the time to WA, the best way is with skynet they are door to door courier and cost no more than the post, the only difference is they are much quicker and they don't lose your package! www.skynetworldwide.net They will pick up from your location and it akes about 5-6 days to get there. Half kg is dhs 65 and one kg dhs115, much cheaper than any other courier. hth HI Sarah Joy, by camel blankets i mean the colourful blankets that camels wear....i always buy a handful when i go to Al Ain, either from the city or the camel market there. they look great as throws and are also good for picnics! the camels in this pic are 'wearing' some! http://www.flickr.com/photos/madjul/3656907618/ this is great to know - i have some camel blankets that i wantto send to oz and DHL quoted me 700 DH. i sent a smaller package instead and even that was 250. i will check out skynet! Hi Kelly, May I ask where you found the 'camel blankets'? Is this a brand of a normal blanket or is this actually an animal camel product/from the camel skin? (I was just reading the other day about all the many things camels have been utilised for for years and years so wondering if this is a product made through the camel leather tanning process) Hi Kelly, I understand now! Can I purchase the box from them and they will bring the required packaging/box with them when they collect, or do I need to box it up and label etc myself first? I will have a look at the site right away - thanks for the link :) They will give you the box, I have never been charged for boxes. Just ask when you book the collection that you need a box. Absolutely awesome - thanks so much for this tip :)

Actually we got her through Great Danes in Dubai. She's not the only one we have, we have our boy, he's 7 and a half and living in Dubai all his life. Danes a mostly indoor dogs, so the weather doesn't bother him too much. During summer he's mostly in the house but now the weather starts to be enjoyable and the like to be more and more outside in the garden. If you want more details, my emails [email protected]. Contact me and we can talk more about the "gentle giants'!! Oh my goodness Simor, I had no idea there was a 'Great Danes in Dubai'. I've kept an eye out for them and I've never seen one since moving here (being walked etc). You're a lucky lady having two of those beautiful creatures in your life :)

If you use normal post it can take anything from 2-4+ weeks! I never send anything to Australia, I buy gifts online from companies in Oz. I have been doing the same thing Chocs - online ordering is fantastic for surprise presents - but these are little gifts I bought for them when I was visiting Italy...so I need to get an actual parcel to them :)

Yep here we go again....people TELLING other people what they should do. Why not just point people in the direction of information and allow themselves to make their OWN choice...whether it be right or wrong? People can make their own decisions, but others stating their are breeders in the UAE when there aren't is wrong! If you see the state of many of the poor dogs out there and the ones dumped by people who've brought in pure breds etc then you'd feel as strongly about it as I and others do. I will continue to give actual FACTS, then people can make up their own mind. But the simple matter is that there are so many abandoned animals here we really don't need more bringing in. And if people bothered to search the forum and look up all the threads on these subjects, then we wouldn't have to keep repeating ourselves. edited by Chocs01 on 09/10/2012 First: OP wants a particular breed which, in my opinion, would be difficult to find among the abandoned ones. And she cannot be faulted for wanting a particular breed and pushed into adopting a dog that later might end up again in a shelter because is not what she wants. Second: If she wants to bring in a puppy, is her choice and has nothing to do with any of us. We ended up adopting the little great dane girl just because she was a great dane, otherwise we would have brought a puppy from one of the kennels back in Europe. She asks for advice, let's give her advice, not orders! OP look around, at the shelters you might find or NOT. In teh per shops, again, look careful and asses the animal state and well being. If you don't feel comfortable, contact a kennel ( a known one) that can provide you with companion you want. Good luck!! Hi Simoralu44, I realise this is a little off topic so I'm sorry if this question annoys anyone: May I ask how you came to find your great dane girl - through which avenue here? I'm also interested to hear how she has settled into life with your family in Dubai? The weather is okay for her? I do love great danes :)

It depends on your insurance. In the past my doctor gave me a prescription for three months which I took to the pharmacy. They phoned the medical insurance for permission to supply me with 3 months' medication. After the three months I phoned the doctor for a new prescription and repeated the process. However, I changed insurance and the new insurance insist now that she sees me every three months before she can give me the repeat prescription. Speak to your insurance and find out about their policy. Thank you Lettie - I will look into it :)

Dear Nespresso lovers... I was looking at a video on YouTube for one of the Nespresso Machines that looked good to me: Delonghi Lattissima 680 (and Nespresso) review http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kebds4DIrGY&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLCikOxQmZwxZ4M7PGCgUYHg But the only one on the UAE Nespresso site that seems like that is the: Lattissima+ http://www.nespresso.com/#/ae/en/coffee_machines/selecteur_gamme/machines-lattissima/lattissima-ice-silver-1 I think they will effectively do the same thing, maybe just different case design for different regions? Does anyone own one of these Lattissima models? If so, did you buy it from a Nespresso store here in Dubai and how much did you pay? <sorry, no prices on website> Thank you!

Same way as there, call the dr and ask for a repeat prescription as well as insurance forms to be completed. Hi Mrswhippy, Can I really just call the clinic and ask them to get the Dr. to write up a repeat prescription for me to collect at the clinic reception?? I have been paying the enormous consultation fee to see the Dr. to get the new scripts written each time :(

Just thought I would post an update for anyone who ends up wanting to know: Information I just received from a toy store is that at present Hasbro are not planning to release the new 2012 Furby model onto Dubai store shelves until April/May 2013 - but it seems there is a possibility that date may change with further inter-company conversations. Amazon for the win :)

Hiya, Good for you - sounds like an awesome plan! For our anniversary I treated my husband and I to a booking at The Talise Ottoman Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray - I could not have been happier with the experience. We had one of the hammam experiences and then a full body massage. But before and after there are jacuzzi's and huge beds in 'quiet areas' that you can just lounge around or have a doze on hehehe. The whole place was very nice and I would have happily just spent the entire day relaxing/lounging/reading/sleeping - but my hubby got bored of the 'doing nothing' once the treatments were over so we left :) http://www.jumeirah.com/Hotels-and-Resorts/Reiseziele/Dubai/Jumeirah-Zabeel-Saray/Talise-Ottoman-Spa/ Hope you have a wonderful birthday! Thank you for the birthday wishes. This sounds good. How much was it. There are no prices on your link. edited by Diamante on 06/10/2012 Hi, 'm sorry that this place is probably not in the Entertainer Book though - just wanted to mention it anyway because I was actually really happy with the day I had there. Yeah you're right - I actually find it really annoying here how so many places don't publish prices. If you just send a quick email asking for price & treatment details to [email protected] they will then email you back all the price lists.

Awwwww ladies - those Santa stories are so precious :) Whoa those fishpond prices are steep - I have seen them on Amazon for US$60. Arrrgh I do not have a Ship & Shop account - sorry guys, can anyone give me easy instructions for setting one up - it is something I keep reading about on here again and again but just have not got around to organising it - is there an ongoing cost involved? So - is the conclusion that no local Dubai stores actually have them in stock?

You are absolutely right - I should be wearing gloves <I'm just not a fan of kitchen/cleaning gloves but may have to get over that>... I have actually found the complete opposite regarding the french v's colour. I am a total french fan but it never ever lasts as long as I can get the plain colour application to last??? Yep - everlasting pedi is awesome and actually lasts as long as they claim it should :) The exfoliating gloves in the shower is an awesome idea - you're right - washing my hair with the snags kills the everlasting mani - ive been wondering how to avoid this - will pick up some exfoliating gloves to try out asap... I've actually never heard of gelleration - could you let me know which salons here stock it? Thanks for the feedback ladies - I know it is a boring topic but it has been annoying me so thought I'd see if anyone else had found a solution to actually getting their moneys worth :)

Hi ladies, I've been into this supermarket/department store only once for a quick walk through quite a while ago. Just wondering if someone who shops there can give me an idea if I'll find any of these non grocery couple of things there or if I'm just better sticking to somewhere else when I'm running all around tomorrow: -Birthday greeting card -Birthday wrapping paper -Large stainless steel cooking pots -Any asian type cookware/cutlery section (basic chopsticks & soup/ramen spoons etc) -Things like travel adapters/power plugs for other countries -Camera memory cards -Office stationary, like document flip files etc -Also wondering if the fresh food department does any catering platter type orders Sorry it's such a jumble of things - I'm running short on time to action some things this week so looking for a close one stop shop. Thank you! :)) I know you have an answer, but I'll answer for the Satwa one (behind Shangri La) Birthday greeting card - There was a very small selection (better elsewhere, though) -Birthday wrapping paper - as above -Large stainless steel cooking pots - small selection down the opposite end of the f and v section, along the wall -Any asian type cookware/cutlery section (basic chopsticks & soup/ramen spoons etc) - not there when I last went -Things like travel adapters/power plugs for other countries - yes, on the same wall as the pots - however, get on the elevator and go up to Sharaf DG for a full collection -Camera memory cards - Sharaf upstairs -Office stationary, like document flip files etc - this section is small but (again) near the pots -Also wondering if the fresh food department does any catering platter type orders - probably would. Their bakery does nice platters also. Good morning Amy! Thanks so much for these tips :)

Just wondering if someone who shops there can give me an idea if I'll find any of these non grocery couple of things there or if I'm just better sticking to somewhere else when I'm running all around tomorrow: You can get the following at the Union Coop opp Safa Park... -Birthday greeting card Yes, but the quality varies. -Birthday wrapping paper Yes, but quality varies. -Large stainless steel cooking pots They have an excellent Turkish brand called Kurkmaz, I bought a few. -Any asian type cookware/cutlery section (basic chopsticks & soup/ramen spoons etc) Yes, in the aisle devoted to melamine cutlery. -Things like travel adapters/power plugs for other countries Yes, just behind the kitchen stuff -Camera memory cards yes, a small kiosk facing the cooking pots aisle, though prices may not be as great as C4. -Office stationary, like document flip files etc yes, quite good selection -Also wondering if the fresh food department does any catering platter type orders They make up fruit baskets suitable for gift-giving (ask the gals at the veg weighing point) and the bakery is famous for its mini sandwich platters. Thank you! :)) Hope you had a successful shopping trip and found a taxi! edited by Apricot on 05/09/2012 edited by Apricot on 05/09/2012 Apricot you're a star!! This info is fantastic :)) How on earth did you become such an expert 'finder'??????? I have to admit at this point (almost 11:30pm now)...that nope - today was in no way a success for me as far as my initial to do list was concerned. Despite my very best of intentions, something popped up. So i have just sat for a few minutes writing myself a revised to do list for tomorrow that has been scratched back to the very 'absolutely cant get to thursday night without this' hehehe.

The Home Store had little little shapes containing gel that can be frozen and they'd probably do as good a job as the stones but not at all in the same class:-) The Q store (Mirdiff CC and Dubai Mall) sometimes has nice bar accessories. I didn't think of Q - will give them a call in the morning (shops shut at 10pm weeknights right?) Where is The Home Store? Thank you!

Is the OP certain it was a neighbour and not some poor labourer or other unfortunate down on their luck? Perhaps they were expecting the same welcome traditionally provided by local families see link http://gulfnews.com/mobile/news/gulf/uae/society/water-of-life-1.863095 some expats might like to adopt the same generous provision to those less fortunate than themselves. edited by dally on 05/09/2012 Hi Dally, Thanks so much for posting that news article - it is very nice reminder of just how fortunate most of us are, and how if we think about it - there are very simple but meaningful ways to give back all around us. I wasn't worried really taken a back by the water being used that was mentioned but more specifically, I myself would actually be quite frightened if I suddenly realised in the middle of the night that someone was around/inside my garage. But you're right, even in the case of if I found someone on my premises - it would probably do me good to think outside of my own fear and instead wonder if they were in real need of help. :)

Hi Sarah Joy, Orange-blossom and lime blossoms are quite nice. I think Vanillas after period of time might be a little too dominant... If you like sweet smells but not over empowering like vanilla, i would suggest Pomegranate noir ,it is fruity- has berries, pomegranate etc, but since it has also frankincense., you can also well combine with basil or lime blossoms of Jo Malone... so recently become one of my favorite. Enjoy... <writing down your hints to take along next time> Thanks! :)

can you buy chicken in prime gourmet? I just checked the website for you about chicken <cause I didnt need any this time round> and I'm not certain because of this page being under construction http://www.primegourmet.ae/Poultry/ But the cuts of beef I was able to get from them were not on the website either - I sent them a quick email though and they got back saying they had what I needed so maybe you could do that and ask about chicken... For Japanese ramen I would suggest Bentoya on the SZR near the DIFC. It is excellent traditional Japanese food, the ramen taste like you're in Tokyo and it's clearly where the Japanese expats go. It's not plush by any stretch so might not suit a bday, but def take him there at some stage - also try the Chicken Tsukune meatballs! And there's lots of sushi if you don't like ramen yourself. Another idea if he loves chilli beef ramen from Wagamama is to make them yourself - the recipe is available online - we're actually having it for dinner tonight! Hi Penpen, Wanted to get back to you - I looked up Bentoya and it looks perfect - going to take hubby there this weekend if time permits and see if he can be at all satified hehehe!! Thanks :)

I honestly can not remember, however taxi's are always around the area, so you should have no issues picking one up, if you need too. Thanks so much Polly. Was thinking a random woman on the side of a road with a massive trolley load might find it hard to get a taxi to stop on a busy street <cause id need to load it all into the boot>...so was hoping for a 'taxi line' at the shop front - will try my luck this arvo and see how i go :))

despite its bad ress of being pricey, Jo Malone is still the most efficient one... they take months to finish and they do have really good fragrance. Hiya DR, I went to Jo Malone the other day to grab one - but after I smelt their vanilla, I wasn't sold :( The lady explained it was a 'spicy vanilla' and i was really wanting a gorgeous sweet vanilla scent. Any other similar JM type options you know of? Ending up picking one up from Bath n Body to try out after having read all the recommendations on here (thanks ladies). :)

I was looking up something else and came across this recipe! http://www.theperfectpantry.com/2008/07/star-anise.html Let us know how it works out if you do attempt it. Hi Dragon, Wanted to let you know I did try out this recipe and hubby LOVED IT!!! I have to admit though - I changed the suggested quantities of the ingredients and also suggested cooking time. But it was a big hit and a definite do again :) Also - I used Prime Gourmet for the first time...and am working through the few bits and pieces I ordered from them - so far the 2 diff beef cuts and the butterfly lamb I've cooked up...delish!!!

Do any of these recommended companies offer a one off cleaning service (so I can call randomly and ask them to send someone tomorrow type thing)...or do I need to enter a regular contract with them?

Also as a side note, I've previously ordered a custom two tier anniversary cake...and getting a profiterole tower birthday cake this week - both at short notice and with home delivery - through Brunetti (dubai mall). Has worked out well so thought I'd mention it in case you were short of time and had problems getting a hold of your preferred home based bakery options :)

talking of cakes, has anyone tried the ice cream cakes from Baskin Robbins? I've been looking for something a bit different for my sister when she comes out to visit in a few weeks for a belated Birthday celebration, but wasn't sure if they were more of a (more expensive)glorified gateaux?? Otherwise is it better to stick with the ones listed below?? TIA Hi Yellow! My husband is a massive icecream fan - but when we tried the Baskin cakes, he was not really impressed. He decided he would rather stick to a delish normal cake (that he can always add icecream/cream to the bowl its in if he wants)...or just a normal tub of icecream :))
