My last baby starts school this Sept and I'm wondering what I can do with my time. I don't want to spend my whole life at the mall. In the future I would like to leave Dubai having achieved something. We are lucky enough to have a housemaid so I will never have this much free time again and want to make the most of it. Unfortunately he is only at school 8-12:30 at the moment and I want to be the one who picks him up. Any ideas? Oh Betti - you are eventually going to have so many ideas of how to fill your time youre going to end up with NOT enough time to do all the things you think about wanting to do!! hehe 8-12noon would probably make looking for paid employment a little tough. What did you use to enjoy before having children??? Is there anything you had to give up after having bubs that you might like to start up again? Are you a neglected book worm who would have given anything for a few hours piece to read in private? Would you enjoy being able to attend regular gym sessions or learning a new sport/activity in a structured class environment? Is there anything you would like to learn that youve never had the chance? Dubai offers all sorts of classes <langugages / courses and certificate qualifications / cooking classes / photography etc etc etc just to mention a few>. Depending on your situation - is there any small business venture you'd like to investigate for yourself? Do you have an interest in charity work or community programs that you could lend your valuable time and skills to? :)))

Hi Sarah, Just adding my two cents on this too - I've been using fibrelash for a while now and think it's fabulous, although not the cheapest lash product on the market for sure. I'm trying to find out also whether you can buy the fibres separately also as they seem to go quicker then the mascara. Here's a review on it; http://www.simonelovesmakeup.com/2012/07/model-co-fibre-lash-brush-on-false-lashes.html Hiya Irish, Hmmm after a quick search it seems everyone is asking the same thing as you! I've just ordered my first pack of the fibre mascara set to try out and will keep hunting for the fibre only bottle :))

Hiya, Always pick mine up at Waitrose (Dubai Mall). Little white box, powder form - comes in boxes of either separate sachets or not. It is in the aisle with the baking products (not in the p*rk section). :)

I started using ModelCo Fibre Lash a couple of months ago and I actually got tons of compliments, I was a tad skeptical at first but can't imagine using anything else. You can get it online and they deliver across the MENA. www.fibrelashme.com I also sale it on glam box website. Whoa - have never seen this product before but am now super curious to try it out! I have not ordered from Glambox or fibrelashme before though - I can see glambox prices are clearly AED$$ but do you know if the total checkout price listed on fibrelashme is shown in dirhams or is it actually US$$. Thank you! :)

We are looking for a decent mattress and can't decided where to get one from or what kind. We considered a Tempur but have read that they're hot and smell at the beginning so that's put me off a bit. We also went to the American mattress place on SZR and did the sleep position analysis to choose what type of mattress we should get, but they're pretty pricey and not sure if it actually works. Have any of you done this? We don't mind paying if they're good! So, where did you get our mattress from & do you love it? TIA Hi Frazzle, My husband is very tall and also suffers with back problems - so back home we slept on a mattress that we had custom made <size and filling etc> to try and combat these issues - it worked wonderfully. When we moved over here we brought nothing but a suitcase and I know hubby was worried about finding a regular store bought bed that would work for him. In the end, after much research and price comparison <sounds like what you've been busy doing> we actually ended up just buying an IKEA mattress that hubby took a fancy to. Funnily enough it has been great - he doesnt wake up in pain at all. Who would have thought?! - Saved big bucks too hehehe. :)

Hi, just switched to Elife TV from OSN. Of course no instructions given, and now wondering if anyone knows if you can switch Arabic subtitles off? otherwise will try calling Etisalat again:( I've always had Elife and always had those subtitles - I'd also be keen to hear if anyone knows a simple work around because like you said, the Etisalat box/remote etc came with zero instructions. :)

That would be awesome! I know I made a note of the company but can't find it, or the original post! lol So sorry Xmas, I just got in touch with my friend. Turns out she has the regular/everyday pickup/drop off organised with a Dubai Taxi. So not a private company who can do extra errand tasks etc like you were looking for.

Thanks Sarah, thats great. This particular company did emergency pick up/drop off of people - so I could schedule say someone to pick my mum daily take her to the gym and bring her back - same driver, set fee. It also did grocery delivery which is what prompted me to look at it. Now I need it to arrange a scheduled pickup/delivery. I recall really thinking it looked reputable and someone vouched for it. Ahh I see. Hmmm, I have a friend here who I know has been using a scheduled driver daily - don't know details though but I will send her a quick message :)

A while back, I remember someone posting a link to a company that would go to the grocery store and pick up groceries for you and deliver it to your house for a fee. You could hire their driver to do various delivery tasks. I've searched but can't seem to find the link. Does anyone remember the name of the company? Hi Xmas, I've not used yet but this one comes up in a web search again and again: http://www.mashaweeruae.com/ Maybe someone here will be able to recommend one to you that they have actually tried out though. :)

Re the 2008 list of banned/controlled/restricted medication: I've just rung the number posted below - and been told "as long as she has a letter from her GP it doesn't matter what the medication is". I asked whether that was correct for the whole list of medications and whether there was a more up to date list than the 2008 one, and the man said "it doesn't matter as long as she has a letter from her GP". Hmmmm! Ugh -So very helpful. http://www.grapeshisha.com/plan-your-trip/banned-drugs-in-dubai-and-abu-dhabi.html <There are so many websites with tids and bits of info and I'm sure youve already searched them all.> I dont know what category the meds your daughter needs are - but if they fall into the 'allowed with documentation' category - Personally I would be trying to carry at least the following wherever possible: *Letter/Report from her doctor/specialist: what youll end up with differs from doc to doc but try and get him to at least mention in his letter what her condition is and that it requires her to take blah blah <full name and dose amounts of all the meds listed which will be a match for what youre carrying>, and of course - his contact details <so it should be on a letter head or something if not stamped>. *Make sure you carry the meds in the official packaging. *Ive chosen to keep it in hand luggage for easy inspection if required along with the paperwork i carry <this is to avoid someone tearing apart my suitcase without me present>. *I would be keeping copies of the scripts I used to get them. *If you can, ask the chemist you bought them from to print you a receipt for them <this will have the chemist contact details/pharmcist ID etc/proof of payment. And I don't know about this for the UK - but for me - all this paperwork had to be first certified in my state, and then sent off to the UAE capital embassy in my country <which was in a diff state> to be stamped again. And yes, I am probably more careful than most - as I followed all the rules - and have never once been asked to show anything to anyone :)

We have to do three monthly trips back to London to see specialists SJ, as we were unable to sort things out for her medically in Dubai. So we've got that side of things pretty much covered now thanks But as you say, so much that you find online doesn't work or is presumably extremely out of date. I'll give that number a ring and see if the 2008 list is the current one and repost. Just thought I'd ask a quick question and hoped to get a quick answer!! Nothing is quick in Dubai :P Wishing you luck October :)

thanks SJ - that's a really useful contact to have - I've hunted high and low after an address like this as one of my DDs can be/has been prescribed medication that can cause us an issue travelling to the UAE. I found the list elsewhere, also from 2008 - and have been unable to find a more uptodate one. Hey October, I completely understand your frustration and therefore increased worry. I spent hours trolling the internet hitting constant block walls <everything from UAE ministry websites that simply don't work to ones that do but have not been updated for ten years> before I moved here, trying to find current and reliable info on banned/controlled prescription medications and also the official process for having all related documentation properly attested as per UAE requirements based on my home country. I do sincerely hope that London number is current for you. As you probably already know - 'most' things should be okay - IF you go through the enormous task of first obtaining all supporting documentation <reports from doctors to accompany you etc>, original scripts, official receipts for the purchase of the meds <helps with proof they were not black market purchase> etc etc etc and then get everything certified/notorised/attested as per your country and UAE law demands. One thing to keep in mind where your child is concerned though <and just something to have a plan for if you can not get the specific Dubai availability info from the London contact> just because you can bring something in legally <of course a very restricted amount of it though as per guidelines> does not mean that doctors here will be allowed to prescribe you/or that you will be able to buy, the exact same med when it comes time for a script renewal.

Hi Sarah, have you looked into Contender MMA? A buddy of mine is a boxing coach there and he has all but convinced me to check it out. It is run by Tom Khan who's brilliant. I know they have bjj there, I know they have women members, I just don't know all the details. Might be worth investigating? Hi Beebers - thanks so much for your reply. Yep, I do have Contender on my list to check out further. If you do end up going along to any of the classes there I would really love to hear what you thought of it! :)

thanks ladies. They are herbal and contain: Valerian extract, Passiflora extra, wild lettuce extrac, vervain and hops I actually bought them in Holland and Barrett. Love the directions on the packet too: Kalms Sleep may make you feel sleepy!! Hi October :) That is an interesting herbal mix you've found there. I don't know the laws here regarding those herbal ingredients but I for one would always prefer to be safe rather than sorry - I did just now find this London based contact <I think you said you are in the UK at the moment right?> who you could place a quick call to and confirm if it may pose any problem. http://www.fairtrials.net/press/article/list_of_controlled_pharmaceutical_substances_in_uae UAE Embassy Medical Department 71 Harley Street, LONDON, W1G 8DE Phone: 02074866281

Sarah Joy, they are called Rock & Sole Plaice and they are in the Park n Shop car park on Al Wasl Road. Can't vouch for the fish but chips were great, they also sell deep fried mars bars! In the UK we don't have shark or dim sum on our chip shop menus hehe but sounds like an exotic take on our version lol! Hope you enjoy. Got a sudden craving today and have announced to DH that he is taking me there on a date this weekend hehe ETA - R&SP have a Facebook page edited by The Dangerous Blonde on 22/08/2012 Hahahaha love it Dangerous Blonde!! Back home we'd say a lady that actually requests a fish n chips shop as a date destination is "a cheap date" hehehehe. I actually have no idea where that location is AND I'm going to consciously stop myself from looking it up on a map because I know once I do it will loudly tick away in my mind and I will be jumping at the first chance <excuse> to go there - def not a good plan for me at the moment - trying so hard to eat clean :) Hope you enjoy for the both of us on the weekend!!!

Sarah joy...I think that's a very good suggestion and he could really do with going out there and meeting new people. Men seem to thrive on challenges and love 'doing' so I'll def sit down with him and see what's out there for him... Also think the weekly support meet might be good so hopefully he won't feel too embarrassed about going along. Thanks a lot . Xx Hey M1! You've hit the nail on the head - when I was actually talking to my hubby last night he articulated that one of the things men seem to thrive on most is 'competition'...of any sort...it seems to motivates them differently <more positively> to how most women respond to a competitive environment. In saying that - a sport/activity where he is trying to push himself to improve/get better/win etc ticks that box. But even more basic than that - my husband mentioned that even placing a friendly bet with another male friend of his...about who can reach a particular goal first <in this case, weight related> - can do wonders for self control hehehe...the competitive drive is innate in all of us to some degree :)

Hi October, I have not seen the tablets you are talking about - but it might help if you could tell us what the active ingredients in them are... That way even if that exact brand is not sold here - it might be easier to determine if there is something in them that would automatically put them on the banned/controlled medication lists. <those lists are readily available on the net>

Also I was thinking about this post last night - and would like to add one more little suggestion... Depending of course on your husbands specific needs at this moment - We have found that especially for anyone who has felt they've 'struggled' with a weight problem <either not weighing enough or weighing too much> sometimes it is such a lifesaver to try and find a sport/interest/activity that they think they'll enjoy...one that specifically encourages themes of healthy eating, fitness, strength, stamina, self confidence and personal discipline...that way - while you are immersed in the training process to obtain the skills required to succeed in that activity - weight changes are like to happen by default. Without the stress/pressure that some people suffer while consciously trying to 'lose weight'. Plus - there are bonuses of meeting new people and making friends :)

Hi ladies, my husband would really like to loose some weight and I feel as if a group might be a good option for hm. It would provide a clear focus in a supportive environment. It doesn't have to be specifically for men but I guess it would help if there were one or two men involved. Hi M1, I do not know the details of what your husbands situation is like at the moment - but I can speak from my own personal experience... Both my husband and I (for a variety of different reasons) accepted recently that we needed to make some changes regarding eating habits. We have both found that using the calorie counter apps readily available for iphone/ipad/or just with an internet web page registration has really assisted us. Lots of them not only track calories but vitamins, weight, body measurements, mood profiles, exercise done etc From experience and what I have read from others - the most recommended app/site if you are in need of an active support group/forum type environment with instant feedback and encouragement from other users is http://caloriecount.about.com/ We realised though we didnt want the very popular group support feature and have switched to the http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ iphone app because this one apparently has a larger database of stored food records which makes things like the barcode scan feature easier to make use of. You could just take a look at the sites and see if any of them are suitable for your husbands specific needs though. :)

Hi ladies. I once went to a session at 3rd Eye and wasn't too keen. I have been 'sitting' solo here ever since. I have been with this UK organization for around 11 years now. Every time I try a new teacher or retreat centre I always find myself going back to them. They have a website where you can download free audio http://www.freebuddhistaudio.com/meditation/ .I can also recommend their retreats if you find yourself back in your home country for a summer. They are called Triratna and have meditation centres all round the world. http://goingonretreat.com/ Hils, thanks so much for the tip - I will look into the audio downloads!!

Good evening ladies, Before I had to relocate to Dubai I was absolutely loving the team I found back home - gym allowed me train in bjj, mma, muay thai and submission wrestling. Keep in mind - I am still very much a complete beginner! And since moving I have not found a new gym/team. I did contact the bjj school my professor recommended to me - only to be told they are a men only team. Is anyone currently a part of a martial arts school they would recommend? Thanks so much for your time. :)

And while on the topic - if there are any experienced meditators who happen to read this, I would really be very appreciative of a tip about where to either buy/download/stream online etc a particular guided meditation (CD type) series that you personally recommend. I did have a recording made specifically catering for my personal needs at the time which I found extremely useful - but alas, that tape is now locked in storage on the other side of the world. Despite my best attempts I am still a novice and at this point really rely on being guided to get the most out of my time. Thanks so very much for any suggestions. :)

Ladies DS has a very bad nappy rash. Its bright red with pus spots =( I've been trying sudocream for days now but no luck. Can anybody recommend a good one for severe nappy rashes please? Oh your poor bub that must be so terrible :( I was lucky to find a really good locally produced <available in all chemists and cheap> cream for eczema/heat rash - but I will call my pharmacist and see if it is also recommended for nappy rash before mentioning the name okay. Hopefully one of the lovely mummies here will have an answer for you quickly though - can't imagine how hard it must be for you watching the rash not get any better each day. Hi JBR, I just called my pharmacist. The cream I'm using for eczema can be used for nappy rash but only in extreme cases and he recommended getting a doctors advice to see if it is necessary <I cant say because I have not seen your bub and I guess everyones opinion on what severe is differs>. But he did say that here in Dubai pharmacists recommend Sudocream <which you said is not working> and another one called Biolane. Have you had a look at Biolane on a chemist shelf here to see if it suits your needs? I do hope a mummy replies with the name of one that she has tried and tested already though - will keep my fingers crossed for you. :)

No idea if it is banned/restricted now or not , but please be careful about 'getting someone to bring it in from another country' for ANY drug on banned/restricted list. There is a whole heap of documentation required to bring somethign in which is on these lists, and asking someone else to do this for you is potentially giving them a jail sentence. If pharmacies have been told not to sell it, I'd def be very wary about bringing it in. Check Valerian root...... In total agreement Biscuit! Thanks :))

Ahhh now I understand the store you're talking about - I know the one in Dubai Mall...I'm pretty sure I had called them recently but scoffed at the prices they told me over the phone hahaha stingy Sarah! Might just have to suck up the hit to the wallet then :) You're welcome! To be more specific, it is the Organic Foods & Cafe in the Emaar Business Park building 2 on SZR next to The Greens. There is another of these markets in Dubai Mall, but I haven't checked there for the melatonin. Nod nod - I asked a doctor and pharmacist last week about it. Current status is - melatonin is not on the banned/controlled/restricted list. However, pharmacies/chemists have been officially stopped from stocking pure melatonin only tablets. So in the chemists you can now find sleep assist products - which do often contain varying amounts of melatonin but also will most likely have a heap of other herbal or vitamin components etc crammed into the tablets. Is the Organic Market a shopping center in the Greens suburb? Ugh at the price. I paid 50dirhams for twenty sleep assist tablets <3mg melatonin each>. Which i still dropped my jaw at considering how dirt cheap this stuff is everywhere else. Thanks heaps for your help. The nutrition/vitamin section of the Organic market by the Greens has bottles of it, just got some a couple weeks ago there. I think it's 60 tabs for 140 dhs? I went around a lot of places asking for them (pharmacies, nutrition shops...), and was told they are no longer banned and readily available in many locations, all the same I had trouble finally tracking down a bottle.

As of a few months ago, melatonin was banned from UAE. Perhaps ask someone visiting the states to bing some back? I have thought of asking a friend from home who is coming over to bring me some but I am hesitant because even though I know it is no longer banned I would not want any problem or incident coming through the airport for them with an uninformed or overly enthusiastic security/customs staff member. I'll try it myself but would feel so bad if a friend was hassled at all about it while trying to enjoy their holiday!!

Dangerous Blonde, does this chip store have a website? or online menu? or offer a delivery option? I'm an aussie and one of the first things I noticed here was the distinct lack of little fish and chips shops who sell bucket loads of hot chips <also things like shark, dim sims and deep fried mars bars> for a few bucks a go and wrap it all up in butchers paper hehehehe To be honest, probably a good thing I dont have a store like this anywhere near where I live here in dubai!! :) OMG I just had a quick browse and I am in heaven! Going to have a thorough shop later on tonight with DH who will no doubt be adding plenty of items! BTW - Oakfield, I went to the chippy by Park n Shop on Wasl road and had to say, they had pretty decent chips. The well cooked, mushy, hand cut kind wiht loads of salt and vinegar and wrapped in newspaper! Didn't have fish but it looked really good and is run by a really nice Qatari / British guy. Taking Dh there sometime this week as he is a Scarborough chap who knows a good chippy! I am a northener too so I know a decent chip as I was brought up in my Nan and Grandad's chippy. Will have to make a visit and treat DH to dinner there!!!!!

Im sure I found melatonin tablets a few years ago in the Blue Bonnet vitamins version - I think you can get them from any healthcare shops. There is one opposite Carrefour in Mall of Emirates and there is also one in Ibn Battuta that do this range. I definitely got them a few years ago unless this has changed since? HTH! Hey thanks! I'm not familiar with Blue Bonnet but will now keep an eye out :)

Thanks so much - seems then I should just quit waiting on the quotes to be emailed back and go straight into the dnata store to get some info in person. Job for tomorrow!!!!! :) Hi Sarah, you can walk into any dnata outlet that is close and convinient for you. Emirates Holidays is different to dnata as they sell tickets/holiday packages on Emirates Airlines only, whilst dnata sell tickets on any airline of your choice. Hi Sarah I always deal with dnata on Shk Zayed Road as they are the largest and best travel agency in Dubai. I get very good service, they are reliable and also very good prices. So I highly recommend dnata. Hi that's great - I have walked past dnata in Dubai mall many times - this would be the same company right - or should I stick with the store you're use to dealing with? Was impressed by dnata website for ease of instant price availability. I did send through a few quote requests to emirates holidays company but have had zero response.

I have seen a couple of threads on here about decorative stickers for decorating a nursery but they were all quite old. Before, the recommendations were ACE or Home Centre. Any ideas where I may be able to get some nice large stickers to theme a baby's nursery please? Has anyone recently bought anything similar? TIA Hi, Out the front of ikea in festival city there is a booth type store that sells wall stickers.

Yes you tried to be efficient and do this the quick way. Only thing you can do is go in person to the post office and enquire! Hahahaha oh nooooooo I had a feeling about this!!!! The thing is - I know the package is now apparently sitting at Dubai central post office but I want to know why it has not been delivered to my apartment or at least building P.O box as per delivery instructions?!?! Is this not how mail works in dubai?? It's a bday gift for hubby ordered from the US so I'm trying to contact someone at the centre so they don't just return to sender Yes, forget logic! Just go to the PO HQ yourself, otherwise you could be waiting a while! You crack me up! I see foot work is once again the tested method for Dubai. This may sound crazy - but if they are not answering phone - how can I confirm they are even open today??

Dont expect any service a week before and a week after eid. Also if your expecting a package, add two extra weeks onto the delivery time as everything is superslow during ramadan. This is from experience in these frustrations myself. Good luck! Thanks for this feedback!!! Must increase patience levels :)))

My DH has size 49 so also has problems! For sports shoes he assures me that if you went to Sun and Sand Outlet in Al Quoz (behind the Gold and Diamond Park) then you will see some on the back wall. Not many though. He also said not to bother in the mainstream shops as its pointless! Go Sports in Dubai Mall have recently started selling a lot of size 49 but must admit we haven't seen many above that! He also got really lucky in Splash about a year ago when he found formal shoes for 120dhs per pair in both tan and black..... So he bought both! They had a certain Brazilian brand which did them! Otherwise he very kindly asks friends who travel to the states to bring a pair back! Oh my you really did hit the jackpot with 120dhs formal shoes in that size!!! Pretty certain a 49 will be too small even if I force him to just scrunch his toes up hehehe I will call that branch of sun and surf though and just see what they've got lying around in a back room somewhere - maaaaybe they'll have something.

The UK site is walktall.co.uk they have a sale on, but they are going fast. He normally orders to coincide with somebody coming over or when he is travelling over. Do you not have any friends there that could bring them back after the summer hols? Ahhh great I will look into that site thanks!! Hmmm actually had not thought about asking UK friends from here who travel home to bring us some. We are Aussies and to be honest, it's just as impossible back home to find anything :))

Hi there, If you need sugar free sweets - I have seen sections of them in... Waitrose in Dubai mall - look in the organic aisle, they have chocolate, candies and biscuits. Galleries Lafayette in Dubai mall - they also have a good range of sugar free chocolate but not so much candy. Look in the diet food aisle. Zoom - there is a little zoom deli near the radisson on Sheihk Zayed rd who I have noticed recently have a tiny new section of sugar free biscuits etc (they also have in stock the Atkins range of choc bars for anyone familiar with this low carb range) Hyper panda in festival city - they actually have a corner of the shop for all kinds of sugar free products. I have been on the hunt for a store that keeps the sugar free jelly crystal boxes in stock. Only place I've found them is Waitrose but to be honest - nine of the ten times I look there is none on the shelf!!! When there is I buy them all. Why is stock so inconsistent?? If you can suggest somewhere else for the sugar free jelly I'd really appreciate it :))
