thanks for the info. ! and another possible day of school .. .......... At a press conference held at the Dubai Police traffic department, Major General Al Zafein said other roads in Dubai are expected to be congested during the event. “We are calling on the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority [KHDA'> in Dubai to announce Thursday as day off for schools to avoid having the students stuck in traffic,” he said. What about the rest of us LOL

My neighbor has 40 parrots the noise is horrendous I am at my wits end . They Squawk from Early hours of the morning till 6.30/ 7pm in the evening . The noise is so loud we cannot hear our TV unless on max volume .We can no longer sit in our garden as the noise is unbearable. 5.30/6 am they start squawking every morning ..We have complained to our neighbor but he has no consideration at all for the families that live around him. Has anyone got any ideas . Municipality or police. I hated calling the police for something so trivial however my neighbor came alive at 11pm to 5am every night. She cooked on the balcony so the smell of fish stank the entire balcony out, she vacuumed at 3am. Had the TV on full blast, did DIY. I tried to be polite, we spoke to our building manager and after 5 nights of broken sleep I called the police. It finally stopped Some people are just this way and feel it is their home so they can do whatever they want. They have no consideration for anyone else. I wish you well

Be careful. If she steals from you etc you cannot report her as you will be fined for not getting her from an agency or on your own sponsorship. The fine is also high!

I got mine in the sale at The White company., I never want to get out of bed! I bought the deep mattress sheets also but I didn't see skirts sorry

with all these celeb overdose deaths one wonders how sad there life must be despite all the money & fame... i am not being judgemental, just wondering.. because u dont necessarily take drugs because u have too much money or for the want of something new to try, or just for the recklessness of it all.. there must be something deeper than that... I imagine they are no different to the rest of us. ( Except money and fame)

Also agree Dubai Police are great. I have lived in UAE 14 years and every encounter I have had with them has been professional, pleasant and helpful. These guys do a great job in a very busy city! I just wish they would get tough on the carseats for kids next...... edited by kitten67 on 03/02/2014 Yep and mobile phone users :-)

I remember when I lived in Mirdif years ago, during Ramadan everyone was using the hard shoulder to sneak down rather than sit in the traffic Eventually I got fed up waiting and thought well if they can do it I will! Needless to say a Police car was behind me and pulled me over. It was a young officer with blue braces on his teeth. He asked why I had done it and I said "well everyone else is". He actually laughed, said go on but don't do it again :-)

I'm sure i heard the news today and they had said he returned to rehab a week before his death. Ofcourse its sad because of the kids but he knew he had kids. My sympathy over celeb overdoses does not exsits. They obviousily have too much money for their own good, they run out of things to do so they turn to drugs. Pretty sure he could have donated the money he used to buy the drugs to a someone who really needed it. I find it sad that you think if someone is rich and/or famous then they are undeserving of compassion. Don't get me wrong, i have compasion for his family, its not their fault. Its really horrible for children to grow up without a parent and i dof eel for them alot. Its just no one was born with a drug addiction, its a choice thats made by rich and poor. Its a shame that some people just can't put family first. Then when a person does have an overdoes its everyone else that worries for the people they left behind when I don't think the person using even thought about at that point when they are to busy getting high. I suggest that you read a little more about the nature of addictive illness before making such ignorant statements. There are multiple studies proving the genetic component of addiction. It is not, as you assume, merely a bad life choice. Thank you LT

I was on way home driving past mall of Emirates , down the slip road and allowed police officer on bike plenty of room to pass by me. Used all indicators, good road manners when turning second left towards apartment block, yet the police officer proceeded to pull in front of me and told me to pull over,he then asked for my reg details! Need advice on what I have done wrong? It's baffling me. Nothing came of it.... I am in a hire car and he asked to see documents, that was all.... But still no explanation as to why I was asked to pull over.... . Sorry I should explain that this is my fourth week here.... So new to all this. Random check. I think the Police here are very nice and not scary at all . I have been stopped and asked to produce documents before and they have been very nice about it . I don't think they need an excuse, chalk it up to a random check :-).

My poor Father who drank himself into oblivion whilst watching my Mother die was thinking of all of us. He just didn't know/could deal with the problem. It could happen to any of us, you and I included. Thankfully I didn't go off the rails however my Sister did back then. Not everyone is selfish when they are an addict. There could be other things going on that they cannot cope with and it is a form of escapism. There for the grace of god I say.

There is no law that stipulates that an employer must pay any housing allowance, let alone one at a specific level. While many expats receive a housing allowance as part of their package, this is a benefit that they negotiate with their employer and is not part of UAE Labour Law This is from my HR Team

Perhaps someone can clarify....... my DH's company does pay housing allowance for people hired on an expat contract, who leave their home country to come and work here. For these contracts the housing allowance is apparently mandatory under Labour Law. This is different for people hired on a local contract, who do not receive a housing allowance. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think perhaps this is what causes the confusion. Housing allowance is not mandatory at all, companies give it if they want to Happy to be corrected, but am sure there is something under Labour Law about housing and transport. Maybe there's someone with thorough knowledge of the Labour Law who can shed light on this as it would be of interest to so many people. I have never read it is law at all The tend to give it within a salary to keep the basic low for gratuity purposes and if someone gets it on top of their salary then all the better for them

I work with companies that pay housing allowance on local contracts also I personally believe it depends on the company and their policies I do not believe that if a person is hired from outside the UAE it is law that they get housing in addition to their salary. Some employers pay it as a total package. I.E basic, housing and transport as a total. I feel they give it to expat contracts to entice them to work here from their home countries.

I for one find that a very good development. As long as the good ones stay around I don't see any harm in it. It will also decrease the rises in rents, utilities and costs in general. So bring it on. Isnt that a bit naive ? :) We have seen this in the late 90s as well, and what happens is 1 costlier staff is replaced by a cheaper staff and then eventually the 1 cheaper staff turns into 3 cheap staff who end up doing the same job. Housing rents have no reason to come down just because cheaper staff are being hired Singapore has had the same thing over last few years. Native Singaporeans and costlier expats being replaced by PRC's and other South east Asians, yet rents and costs have not come down, and have only increased Dubai already has a huge single population, do we really want a city with moslty singles without families, and few families? With respect to the decrease in prices it may be naive, you're right. However who says that cheaper expats who do the jobs are single or come without families? There may be a shift in nationalities, but many non-western expats are equally, if not higher, qualified and have better work ethics than many so called western high flyers. Slight generalisation there!

It doesnt matter, you are going on your husbands visa It does as I have recently had this with 2 candidates who did not earn enough based on their education. Neither could switch straight over and find a new role unless moving to a FZ or Gov/Semi gov company. I would say to ring the labor office and get 90% clarification ha :-) edited by sarahlou123 on 02/02/2014

It depends if you are on a unlimited or limited contract also If you are based outside the FZ and on a unlimited contract then it is all based on salary If my memory serves me correctly If you only have a high school diploma then to avoid a ban you have to be earning more than 8k a month, a Bachelors degree 10,000 per month and a Masters 12,000 per month

If work visa is expiring 1 March - how long does he have to renew? Is it the same as a maid's - ie 1 month? ( with fines).. Any suggestions please from people who have been through this - visa needs renewal 1 March but possibly leaving Dubai for good in June - is it essential to have a full visa? Or can it be done on visa runs? Can you close bank accounts, sell cars, DEWA etc without a visa? Do you get any refund on your visa cost if you leave? Any help gratefully received. Thanks. Where is Husbands passport from? I don't think you get a refund on visa costs unless you are an employer Cant help with the rest sorry
