Hi Ladies dragging up an old post here, but does anyone know if Boots still stocks a wide range of Dermalogica? I'm not close to Dubai mall to visit the actual shop, but if I can get it from Boots that would be fantastic Only just recently started using it and got the products overseas so now not sure where the best place is here to get them thank you :-) The Ibn Battuta branch does but I find it is cheaper to buy in the salons than it is in Boots The chemist near to the ground food court and Nike shop Mall of Emirates also sell it

Oh that and cold calling and spam emails. I ask a guy who called the other day exactly how he got my number. He flat out said, anything you fill in, in shopping malls, give your business card etc they sell the lists of contact details to companies. It's shocking! I give them my old Etisilat number which is no longer in use :-) I only give the important stuff my current number and so far no spam.

5% VAT? I wonder how they will decided what is VAT-able? It's something of a luxury tax in the UK, of course a bunch of silly men have decided that certain ladies essentials are luxuries!. But will it be applied only to luxuries or to everything? Education, healthcare and most groceries will be excluded. The article I read said only 100 grocery items will be covered. I read 150 :lol:

Hello ladies I am planning a move to UAE for September 16. I am a teacher and so am applying for schools; I also have a 6 year old daughter who will move in to Y2 then, so my question is double-edged. I don't really want to commute so need to apply to schools that are also in 'nice/safe' places. I was offered an immediate start in Sharjah but having looked on some forums and spoken to a friend in Dubai, it looks like Sharjah is not a good place for a lone Western woman? So my question is, which areas would you suggest, that are close to British schools? Depends on your hair/weather/styling products If I iron my hair is stays all day but I have to blow dry it straight first If I curl it will stay for 5 hours or so as I have fine hair, everyone is different

Good Afternoon, i am divorced living with my 8yr old Son and my Boyfriend in Germany. We are planning to move to dubai. My Boyfriend is setting up a Freezone Company and rent an Office. I will be employed in this Company to get a VISA and to work there. We are not married. (I know its illegal...) and he is not the father of my son. My Ex-Husband is in the birth certificate of my Son and he would sign a NOC Letter without any problems how can i get a VISA for my Son ? I think its not possible through the freezone company of my boyfriend ? I read that i would need to provide a rental contract (Ejari) and water/electricity bills to the authorities in dubai which all needs to be in my name. This will be a big problem. Our plan was to move to dubai in September, live in a hotel for 2 - 3 months and then we will buy an appartment. But can i use the hotel Bill instead of a rental contract ? And what if we moved to the appartment we want to buy ? Does my boyfriend needs to sign a "fake" rental contract with me ? or can his Freezone Company confirm that the company pays my accomodation ? We get paid in US dollars. We have a dollar account but some of it goes into a dirham account. The money is exchanged at the usual rate and yes, we lose a bit on the exchange but what to do? Thank you for your answer.

I cannot imagine many teenagers wanting to kiss their Mum/Dad on the lips. I imagine they would think it was gross. :lol: I cannot remember back that far but judging by my Nieces/Nephews they switched to the cheek when they were around 11 or 12 I still cant get used to the customary greeting here when friends do the double cheek kiss as it isn't something I did in the UK

I am assuming I would need to work in a salon for a while, Unless there was a demand for it to be done mobile or from home. Ideally I would like to be self employed but understand that probably won't happen straight away. Are they busy out therewith these services? Thanks for you reply I know a lot of people who have them Being self employed isn't as easy here as it is at home as you have to acquire an equivalent of a self employed visa and there aren't cheap The emolument laws and regs here aren't the same as the UK I'm not sure how much hairdressers earn here but you will need a fair amount of cash as set up costs for somewhere to live etc is expensive If you go mobile it may take a while to build up a client base as many ladies who have them done have a preferred hairdresser they go to , also the costs here are much higher for having them done than in the UK and to buy them in from the distributor isn't cheap as there is only one distributor here for Great Lengths

Hi, I currently have a hair salon in the UK, specialising in the application of hair extensions. I am trained with Great Lengths, Gold Fever, Balmain and a few more. I would love to relocate to Dubai and just wondered is there a demand for hair extensions out there. I would be leaving behind a lot to move so wanted to be sure. Thanks, Carly I know of 5 salons here that do all the ones you state above. Micro rings, great length and tape seem to be the most popular. There are many Western hairdresser that specialize in extensions Do you want to go and work in a salon or be self employed?

i've compared prices and the uk store still has wayyyy better prices and styles... so now i just turn location services off and still browse the UK site, buy from there and get it MyBoxed here... i've used the UAE site for their Click & Collect the first week they started it and it was a nightmare coz they took over an hour to locate the item in spite of calling me to tell me that all items were at the reception... then they wer ehaving issues setting it up on their POS system... anyway long story short i would rather just get it online from the UK Am I right in saying that you cannot buy from M and S Uk with a UAE credit card? I tried a few years ago and I wouldn't accept it only my UK one

we dropped our guests for a week day evening flight 2 weeks ago and that was the only flight leaving at that time! airport was very empty. departure area parking is not paid yet! and lots of empty slots. the only minus point ..the un-ending slow speed road to the airport. other than that great airport to fly out of if you are tired of queues at DXB international. Haha we thought we were going to end up in the desert, round and round, it was like a long windy queue for the rides at Alton Towers

Yes, IKEA will open in Muscat, however will be taking some time (min. 1 year). I would recommend you to order through the IKEA Al Ain Pick up Point in UAE - I believe it is the closest to Oman. IKEA AE will only deliver within the UAE The furthest they will deliver from the Al Ain site is to Hatta and Muscat is a good 3 hour drive :-)

Most locally hired interns may not receive a monthly salary or allowance however they live with their parents and probably get pocket money/allowance from their parents It would be very difficult for an ex pat to may AED500 last a month, that is unless they have another income coming in. Could anyone live on AED16 per day? You couldn't even get a short metro journey for that price. A short metro journey is 3 AED. I do agree with you though that 500 AED is almost impossible to live on here. What is the accommodation like? 12 in a room on bunk beds? I believe you got me wrong. This is not a job, its an internship for 6 months. I am not planning to live with 500AED, I am bringing extra money. In fact I was just telling the conditions the hotel offered me (forgot to mention transportation as well). Just wanted to have an idea of how much I'll have to spend monthly despite those expenses. It will be 2 girls per apartment Apologies :-)

Deur all, We just arrived in Dubai and I'm looking for a nice tennis group/ team for my 11 Year old Son. He's already playing for 5 years. Preferably somewhere around Jumeirah islands or Marina. Paul at Clarke Francis is brilliant I am not sure if they do groups though Google and give them a call. He always gets rave reviews on here. He's from my part of the UK and a really nice guy to boot. FairyDust; you are right. What I meant was that a Netflix UAE account with a "you know what" will not work anymore. A Netflix downloaded from the US Store with a US credit card will work to show US content. It might even work without a "you know what" because it will assume you are traveling. I do the same for Spotify and don't have a problem. I'm watching it now without a you know who and pay with a UAE card. There is another way ?

Aaawww, I really feel for you. As many EWs have said, do meet the parents, and yes, please drop her right in to the apartment and meet as many of the attendees as possible. A big hug to you. I've been there, done that, got out unsinged phew! But I know how like a landmine this particular decision making process can be :) Just want to add this though - the work towards facing a yes or no decision about this one party, or teaching our kids to resist temptations, or instilling in them the self worth and leadership skills to say no to their peers, actually begins sometimein their early toddlerhood. Teenagers are difficult under the best of circumstances. Imagine under the worst.. So once you get this party over with, please resolve to talk to her more regularly on things that matter to HER. We may think we already do, but I was surprised to discover how far off the mark I was. Small changes in tone and body language make a world of difference. It involves changing our own mindsets on many matters. For eg, teenagers will have crushes. It's better that they feel free to discuss this stuff with you, than look outside for a confidante. It involves giving in on things that don't really matter - for me it was the damn hoverboard. I let my teenager have it under the condition that it can only be used in an enclosed space with no traffic or pedestrians. And I was shocked to learn that's exactly how he had intended to use it anyway! - and only hold on to the one or two things that truly matter, especially if they involve her safety and security. She'll get that. It's a gradual process, so please don't lose patience. By and by, you'll find her understanding that you're making these decisions WITH her, and not AGAINST her. Lots of luck to you! P. S - if she's asked YOU for permission, i suggest YOU grant it (or not) to her. Sure, it's very important that you consult with your husband. But let her grow up with the example of a strong, capable mother figure who doesn't shy away from the decision making process (nor defers to her father), along with a supportive father figure.. :) Check the date on the post. I love this thread, I too have had to change from Potaita to Potaytow ! Vacation, garbage, lunch and dinner feature in my vocabulary now instead of holiday, rubbish/bin, dinner and tea. I have just been back to the North West of England and suddenly felt very posh! We must be from a similar part the Uk ( I am from the NW too) I still say Dinner and Tea time though, some of my UK Southern colleagues correct me to which I reply we had Dinner ladies at school not lunch ladies :biggrin: I say dinner and tea too, apart from when I'm having food at work then it's called snap :biggrin: So far I'm just managing to resist the American words. A mate of mine over here's from Barnsley and he's succumbed even though he's retained his strong accent. To hear him say elevator and garbage is pure gold. My ex was from Donny and snap was a word he and his Mam used often ;-)

Off thread here slightly but don't ever use draino etc down the toilet or sink I did this a couple of years back for a blocked sink and it welded itself to the plastic pipes that they use here It is only suitable for the metal type ones we have in the UK etc. The plumber had to chip the stuff off and it was like concrete.

Thank you for the quick response :) I am between 4-6 weeks pregnant Will take an ob-gyn appointment as I have full insurance cover early days still but quite exciting... i'm in week 17 and consulting Dr. Jennifer at City Hospital... doctors that are most popularly recommended include: - Dr. Raj @ American Hospital - Dr. Elsa (she has her own private clinic now but delivers at City Hospital) Most of my friends here ( Around 6 of them) delivered at either City or Al Zahra if that helps

I know exactly what you mean. I use very strange words here that friends and family back home wouldn't understand. If I use any slang then the non British ladies at work look at me blankly and sometimes words I use mean something completely different in their language ( That has been very funny at times) One of my closest friends is from Eastern Europe and when I met her Husband for the first time she thought we didn't like each other due to the "banter" we had. She has now started to understand it. I too use gas station ( At home either the garage or the petrol station) vacation ( holiday) wallet ( purse) backside ( behind)

Ok we are all aware of the hair disasters that happen to nearly every woman that visits a salon here. It doesn't matter what you pay, where you go or the popular name they are working under.They seem to be everywhere and OMG why do I always find them? Why on earth is it so very hard for a, so called ,'experienced' or 'qualified' hairdresser to do a whole head of highlights/lowlights? Do they think we are so stupid in thinking that by just putting 15 foils in a thick head of hair even though we requested a full head that we will be so happy that we'll run back for a repeat visit? I am absolutely sick to death of wasting hard earned money on these untrained so called professionals that are taking money and playing at being hairdressers with peoples hair. All I need is a 'full' head of proffessionally coloured highlights and a really good cut and blow dry from a 'qualified and experienced hairdresser'. :angry::angry::angry: Aside from when I first came to Dubai, thankfully in the last few years I haven't had any disasters with highlights or full colour. but I imagine there are many still Have you complained to the Manager of the salon you went too? Hi Sarahlou123, At one hairdresser the lady rinsing dye off my hair called the hairdresser over as she noticed something wrong with the colour. After seeing it I was offered a repeat visit to see another stylist to try and repair the mess. But to be honest since then anywhere I go and I'm not happy I can't see the point so just never return. So would you recommend your salon? My best friend does mine and not in a salon ( If you catch my drift) ;-) Does she need another best friend?:biggrin: I am sure she would however if she did it and you didn't like it I would be mortified for recommending her :biggrin:
