Most locally hired interns may not receive a monthly salary or allowance however they live with their parents and probably get pocket money/allowance from their parents It would be very difficult for an ex pat to may AED500 last a month, that is unless they have another income coming in. Could anyone live on AED16 per day? You couldn't even get a short metro journey for that price.

Had a lovely walk in the rain in the Greens. Strangely enough, was the only one. How come no one else runs outside to celebrate the long-awaited rain? I think people are scared of it. No one in the play areas of the Greens. I walked past a sad looking young girl looking out the window at an empty playground. No amount of weather would keep us in when we were kids. We played out in all weathers ??

Thanks for replying on this delightful topic! A couple of flushes doesn't work - it needs the plunger (which does works). I was just really wondering if there was anything else that could be done to stop it happening in the first place eg unblock a potential blockage. Shadowmist has addressed this. Sounds like a mucky job - wouldn't it be one for a plumber or maintenance guy? Don't fancy this at all...and sounds like our maintenance chap doesn't either! Sarahlou, does the hot water trick actually clear things for the future or just until the next time?! My water started rising up!!!!! I didn't want to call the plumber as was too embarrassed. This has done the trick twice and so far all ok

Most of the Satwa shops will do it as you wait. I went to one last year, cheap as chips, a day later the heel fell off again  You said you didn't want it to take 24 hours. Not that it should last 24 hours ;) Haha no I didn't

Any plumbing experts out there?! Looking for a solution to Dubai toilets that don't flush and get blocked constantly. Common problem I know, so maybe someone has found a product that works or is there something a maintenance company should be able to do? Our maintenance guys just tell us we're using too much paper and can't (won't?) do anything about it. Is that right or should we get a second opinion? This has happened to me a couple of times recently, fish as much as the paper out as you can ( Gross I know) fill a washing up bowl or bucket with hot water and keep pouring it down the toilet, it will clear all the blockage. My colleague told me and I was skeptical but it worked for me

Hi ladies, the weekend is coming up and I wanted to take my friend who just came to Dubai to a few places but we are on a budget. Anywhere you can recommend for us? Depending on the weather take a walk down Kite Beach, take the water taxi over to the Deira Souk and have a wander around. Show her the Dubai Mall ( Free to walk around) Ice skating isn't too expensive either. The Sheraton on JBR walk has a ladies day on a Saturday. Arrive before 11am and its AED110 entrance and you get the AED110 back in F&B

Thank you so much for the replies. Really seems that UK is going to be a good decision. He has the option to pick from the bristol or the wolverhampton office, so its going to be one of the 2. My daughter is 3 years old, so i guess we would be spending a ton on childcare/nursery. BIg scary steps :), I guess i am very materialistic. My husband plans to set up a visit to both places later this year so we can see and evaluate. I love Dubai :). Bristol is a lovely part of the world. If I had to chose between there or Wolverhampton I would chose Bristol  I've read Wolverhampton is a "depressed" area - never been there though. With Bristol you have a fairly good regional airport and also quite near for outings to Devon and Cornwall - weather permitting. The South gets the better weather, Midlands and the North bear the brunt of the bad weather and not so much of a Summer There are so many nice places around the Midlands but I wouldn't live in Wolves itself

Hello Ladies, My mother wants to come to visit us in Dubai for three months, she comes from Sweden so holds an EU passport. Has anyone had any experience arranging a 90 day visa? Both my husband and I have tried to do it through the Ministry of Interiors website but it has not worked for either of us. (It says that neither of our Emirates ID numbers or mobile numbers are valid, so it might be a problem with the website) I have spoken to the MoI headoffice four times today, and nobody has a clue what i am talking about. Last time she came we did a visa run to Oman, but i am not sure that you can even do this anymore? I would really appreciate if anybody could help. Thank you very much!:) Is Sweden part of Schengen? if so she should get a 90 day visa automatically upon landing

Hi ladies! I am a 25 years old Portuguese woman and I have recently got an offer from an Hotel to do a 6 months internship in Dubai. They will provide food (during my working hours), lodging and a 500AED monthly compensation. How much should I expect to spend monthly for someone who's not thinking about living in large but having a medium quality lifestyle ? Thank you for your time They expect you to live on AED16 per day??? This is a very very low amount and that would buy you a meal in McDonalds or a can of coke in a bar. You would struggle in a big way and if they aren't prepared to increase it significantly I would refuse the offer

Finally, the menace that is the Hover/Balance board is banned in public in Dubai. I'm so glad the Municipality have done this. I can't tell you how many near misses I've seen of children on these ridiculous things with cars, falling off onto the pavement etc None of the people I see using them wear helmets or protective pads - which you now HAVE to. Shame they're making them go and annoy the cyclists though. http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/society/dubai-bans-use-of-hoverboards-in-public-1.1672117 Finally, a young lad in our building comes out of the lift on one and takes the ankles of anyone waiting to get in!

Thanks Sarahlou. Never seen a thermometer in ours (not suprisingly - could be a shock!). Both the management and I have asked the owners about heating but they have not bothered responding to either of us. I find it a bit odd when even the managers can't get a reply from the owners. Anyone have any experience of heated compound pools? A friend of mine's is, but I think it is quite rare? I'm going to see the lifeguard tomorrow and ask him plus dip my toe in and see how cold it is. They usually hang the thermometer near the metal steps into the pool. We had one in the views and here in my greens building

Does anybody know where to get reasonably priced extensions as I would like some I should of said nail Do you mean gel/acrylic ones? If so groupon may have offers on as they are quite expensive here and not so common as they are at home. Gellish and Shellac is very popular here. Expect to pay around 200-250 for a set whereas Gellish is AED80 to 120

I drove a hire car for a year then bought the one i wanted. All the car dealerships are here so you could chose online and then test drive when you get here Yes we now have Netflix. I don't feel the UAE one is as good as the US version You only have the choice of one telecoms company for Internet/TV and it will be either DU or Etisilat. High speed internet is expensive slow and personally I find the TV full of repeats. You won't get BBC1 ITV etc but there are some English channels. It takes about a week or so to set up. There are ways to get UK channels but i know nothing about that ;-) Ref the Duvet I have a duck down one but then I have the air con on all year as I love a cold bedroom

You signed up for a flexible 3-month contractso you could move out at short notice once you'd found a cheaper place. Now he's (presumably) found a new tenant willing to play more, you suddenly want the legal protection of a 12-month contract. Sorry, but regardless of what legal loopholes you might be able to exploit, i think you have a moral obligation to leave the apartment at the end of this 3-month period. You can't have it both ways. I added more detail to the first post. Initial three months period ended in September, btw. Would be perfectly ok with him giving me a three months notice right after I gave him my last check. Not with two weeks notice after we agreed I should stay till June. Ok, I am outta here, arguing and explaining is strangely addictive. I imagine he may of been a little ticked off as you asked for a discount. Perhaps ask if he can be a little more flexible to give you time to find somewhere else. Is it worth hanging in there for 12 months or cutting your losses and finding somewhere else to live

Hello, We will be moving to Dubai shortly and are looking for a british curriculum school as that is what DS is studying at the moment. I have looked at the KHDA ratings, and they seem to be for the entire school. Is there an opinion on which schools have excellent primary sections? I am less concerned about the senior schools as we will most probably not be in Dubai that long. I am looking for references for primary schools that will be easy to switch from when we go back to the UK (i.e. accepted at the same grade). Thanks, Does this link help at all http://whichschooladvisor.com/premium/best-british-schools-in-dubai-map-of-dubai-british-schools/ Many of my British friends have kids at Regent-Greens/DESS Oud Metha

Good morning ladies, This is my first post on the Dubai forum. I have a query regarding immigration. My brother in law is going Qatar today via Qatar airways, from the 14th Feb till the 26th Feb. He is a British passport holder. His passport is expiring on the 23rd of August 2016. Qatar airways website states he needs 3 months validity on his passport whereas Hammad intentional airport states 6 months at point of entry which means he has 1 week or so more than the validity. He wants to go Dubai from Qatar for a few days. If he went Dubai say on the 19th of Feb and came back on the 22nd, do you think he will have any immigration issues either at Dubai airport of Doha? As he will be very close to the months validity rule which for Him starts on the 23rd of Feb. Please can someone advice, thank you so much in advance. Has he called Qatar airways customer service? I always find them very helpful

Hello, I am new to the area and looking for a clinic that administers botox and fillers. Would anyone be willing to share a referral where they saw favorable results at a reasonable price? Thank you! T I have had them done here many times Cheaper costing clinics means cheaper/watered down products. For the best results they should be using Dysport/Allergan ( Botox) or Radiesse/Juvyderm/Restylene ( Fillers) Personally I find Radiesse the best as it is thinner than the other two and seem to stay around for up to 2 years, expect to bruise a little with it though Expect to pay 1500 upwards for full face botox and 1800 per syringe for fillers It is annoying as the cost from the manufacturers is a 1/3 of that above. I have used the cheaper products( circa 2012) and believe me the results fade very quickly I have used both Jaffer Khan and Allen Rezai I trust them both and they know the areas that need to be done to give the best results. I only have them done every 18 months If you get it done every 6-12 the results are never the same as the first time

In your experience, how common are communal pools in Dubai that have no temperature control in are not heated/chilled or both? Getting a bit frustrated with our unusable communal pools (4, 2 main, 2 kids). It has been so chilly this year that we reckon it will be even later Than normal before we can use it this year. We must only get 6 months use out of it. Is this unusual? I live in the Greens and haven't tried the pool Jan or Feb but I was in it most of last year and didn't find it chilly in the winter months or too hot in the Summer. I believe they are controlled as I often see the Lifeguard checking the thermometer

Thanks, indeed the dubailand told me he was supposed to give me a 12 months notice and that clause doesn't matter. So not moving out in three weeks time! Also what a ... telling me to move out on a Valentine's Day. Then he has to go to the Land department and file a 12 months eviction notice with one of the four reasons to evict. The courier will tape the eviction notice to your door Please excuse my ignorance but what has Valentines day got to do with it? Its just another day to most people

Ladies, We are relocating back to Dubai. I am considering the Mirabella complex in JVC as it has an amazing amount of space for the price. Do any of you live there or can comment on this development please? The budget is right where we need to be so can't go much over the 135k range right now. Location seems pretty good (near AR, Springs and MOE) and we will have a vehicle. Any information is appreciated! Heard the DEWA bill itself is pretty low. Any way to avoid an agency fee? We are used to the LL paying this! Alternative places in this budget that have 3 bedrooms + maid's room? Thanks in advance :) My colleague seems to think that they have district cooling so your DEWA bill may not be low The only way to avoid an agency fee is find a LL directly I cannot help on the area sorry however they have a FB page as many of the areas in Dubai do ( Type in JVC and ask to be added) Good Luck :-)

Hi all. My daughter has recently moved into an apartment in Dubai and there is no TV in the apartment. What is the best TV package to have for reality shows and comedy? Also what are the monthly costs and is there a place that would be able to install a TV and the package for her? Thanks in advance for any advice. She will either have to use Du or Etilsilat for her TV package as those are the only two and it all depends upon where she lives in Dubai to which one she can have If you Google both DU and Etisilat the prices are on there but be warned they aren't cheap and just as an idea I have Talk, Surf and Watch ( Internet is 16mbps) which is very slow and I have hardly any TV channels as I find they aren't great and are mainly repeats it costs me the equivalent of 66GBP per month Both telecoms company set it up for you and there is also a fee to set up I believe!

I signed up my tenancy contract in summer with a clause that it is valid for three months only, as an emergency while continuing to look for a cheaper place to live. The Rera certificate although says that the contract is valid for 12 months. So in theory it's a normal one year contract with four checks. Anyway, my landlord let me stay in the current apartment, and I paid him every three months. The next pay is in March, and I just got a text message from him demanding me to leave by then. Shouldn't he send me a written notice a bit more in advance? What are the rules here? Did you get a second contract after your first three months was up? or did you just carry on With a normal contract they have to issue you with a 12 month eviction notice ( This has to be notarized) with one of the four reasons to evict written on it I would speak with the Rent Committee in Deira as they will give you the correct and legal advice which you can pass onto your LL

Thanks Sarah Lou. I don't want to go down the agency route, so we are prepared to sponsor a maid and provide a visa, accommodation, etc. We just don't want the maid to work full time hours, All the salaries that are discussed are for full time working maids. I'm not sure what a fair salary would be. Do you want a live in or live out? If it is the latter expect to pay more as I believe you have to pay for her accommodation. As Victoria said if she is working part time for you then she will probably moonlight elsewhere which is illegal and leave you with a hefty fine if caught

Hai, I am an European expat and now 6 months in Dubai and still in need of a car. As we are new we have a very limited budget. I already posted my post on classified section of expatwoman. Buth as more expatwoman have a look on this page I thought to post it also here. We are looking for a SAVE/GOOD car. We prefer a SUV. We prefer also a car with service history and always taken good care of. Just have been used for normal use. Do you have one or know someone who sells the car. Please let me know. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/classified_detail.aspx?pid=30&cid=classifieds&clid=206078 Greets :) German and Japanese cars usually have a good safety record I don't drive a SUV or 4X4, I drive a golf and have never felt unsafe driving it I would research affordable small/safe SUVs online then when you find one that is within your budget go to the dealers and ask for a test drive and see if they have any demo ones rather than buying a brand new one

My neighbor's landlord refused to drop the rent so she moved across the street - same house - for 25k less. I also wondered if the rents did drop and you remained in the same property could you go to DEWA and adjust the housing fee as that is set against your annual rent I was pondering this earlier Our rent has increased over the last 3 years, yet the housing fee remained the same. I doubt you would pop along to DEWA and tell them this haha
