Hi everyone living The Greens, My housemate and I are living in a 2 bedroom apartment and we are desperately looking for an extra car space. We have one already but on-street parking is proving more difficult by the day with all the workers in nearby offices. We are living in Al Ghaf Building A. If anyone knows of any available spaces, please let me know and we can talk to landlords and/or tenants directly. Thanks for your co-operation, A  I sometimes see them for rent on the Green and Greens views FB page Street 6 is always empty and has the paid spaces :-)

Hi, I'm looking for a very good and affordable hair stylist to give me exactly the shades I am looking for. I don't trust anyone in Dubai to be service oriented and charge a good price - please suggest! :) when you say affordable how much do you want to spend and colour wise, half or full head, highlights etc

My neighbor's landlord refused to drop the rent so she moved across the street - same house - for 25k less. I also wondered if the rents did drop and you remained in the same property could you go to DEWA and adjust the housing fee as that is set against your annual rent I was pondering this earlier

Hi all, I am delighted to share that my son has been offered a place in FS2 at DESS. Can parents whose kids are in FS2 in DESS share information on school timings/break (start/end of day) and other class schedules of a typical school day ? They have a website http://www.dess.org/index.php/daily-life/school-timings.html

Anyone's rent actually went down? I am still to meet a person whose rent was decreased. No mine is the same as last year, 2009-2012 our apartment was 20-30k a year cheaper than it is now and they are still being rented for the higher prices.

Why would people of been glum in 2007? Business here was booming as I joined my present company in late 2006 and it was hectic . It wasn't until the end of 2008 beginning of 2009 that the global financial crisis affected the UAE I feel that back then people couldn't and didn't want to believe that the financial crisis would hit the UAE as there so much construction and recruitment going on I remember people saying the UAE would never be affected and then it was. Things are a little slower here however I feel people are being cautious as a result of what happened back then however the government is still spending ( which is some positive news) as they have to get ready for 20/20. I don't think this downturn will be anything like the one back in 2009 I would like to know though where all the rush hour traffic comes from though as SZR etc is gridlocked in the morning

Hi ladies My husband is coming to dubai for 2 months to look for some job oppurtunities. Any ideas how he can live here? Hotels are very expensive. He can afford to pay 3000 to 4000 dhms per month. I don't think even the furnished hotel apartments are that cheap per month Perhaps research some hotel apartments in Bur Dubai/Satwa/Deira/Sharjah as they will be cheaper than the more expensive areas

Many non urgent projects have been put on hold and I did also read some of the larger firms have posted massive losses Has he researched Construction Recruiters? via LinkedIn as many of the agencies have a construction desk, there seems to be at present an abundance of well qualified unemployed construction guys in the market and these guys tend to know who is hiring etc, networking is a big thing here and most guys get their roles via someone they know making it harder for international applicants to find the roles Good Luck!

Hi, dye experts! reviving this thread as I have a couple of questions I couldn't find answered on search option... 1. once you dye clothing in your front load washer, are you freaked about washing the next load? Any residue from the dye remaining? 2. I got an oily hot sauce on a pair of white jeans, pre-treated with dish soap (which has never let me down) and the stain hasn't come out :( I've even tried a little spot bleach to zero avail. They were really expensive and hate to "lose" them. I've only bleached the one spot although it obviously didn't change the color of the white jeans. Would this spot not pick up the dye well? I dye a lot of black clothing and once they are done I run the machine again on a hot wash with my other darks in to make sure all the dye has gone I cannot help with the oily stain problem though

Does anyone know if it is possible to take your maid back to the UK on a long term basis if you are moving back to the UK. Thanks :-))) Read the thread from 2013 http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic211843-moving-to-the-uk--how-to-take-our-nanny-with-us-forum23.aspx There is also some information from the UK gov website, they would be the best people to ask and if you email them they will come back to you quite quickly https://www.gov.uk/au-pairs-employment-law/nannies https://www.gov.uk/domestic-workers-in-a-private-household-visa/overview

Hello ladies, the family I am working with they will move to dubai in few months so they wants us to go with them!but because we are from Romania they don't want to give us resident visa!D'où you know any agencies that deals with this kind of problem!I mention that I am a nanny and my husband a driver for the family! Thankyou They have to sponsor your visa as it is LAW! No agencies will help you with this problem and if they refuse I wouldn't come to Dubai with them as you will be working illegally and could get into serious trouble. What has being Romanian got to do with not sponsoring you. Does it have anything to do with the visa costs here for sponsoring staff? or that Romanian nationals are not on the approved list for maids/nannies etc. If they don't sponsor your Husband either then he cannot get a driving licence

Morning ladies, is anyone able to recommend a hotel in Penang suitable for a couple? We usually prefer staying in 'boutique' type hotels rather than a huge chain, but any information/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to visit mid March, want to see George Town and anything else people feel is worth visiting.. Thank you. If no one responds try Trip Advisor for the Hotels, they have very good reviews on where to stay etc

I used to have five dogs. Over the last 2 years four have passed away and I am left with one lonely old girl. She is 15 1/2, missing her friends and in need of the company of her own species . My girl can't walk far and now that she is old can't cope with boisterous friends. Does anyone else have old / calm dogs who need company - for meet ups, coffee, mooching around in the garden / park? Just someone to hang out with occasionally to relieve the sadness and loneliness of losing her dog-pals. There is a dog park at the Greens, many of my friends take their pooches there It isn't very big but always busy when I walk past at night

How long did you MyBox take to set up? I set up an account 2 days ago and they said they would email me with the details in 48 hours but nothing so far? Sorry to hijack the thread Within an hour, i got an email about the addresses i will use for my orders. I don't think they do spiderman or frozen pj's for adults  Saw some in the men's department at New Look the other day. Star Wars and Marvel designs. I nearly got some for my husband but decided he'd probably look like a prat. I may still get them  That's just mean but if you want to go all out get him a onesie or some meggings ( The latter are all the rage at home)

Hello Has anyone used SnS delivery using the provided Italian address? I'd like to order an item that's cheaper on the brand's Italian website compared to the US or UK websites. I was hoping someone has experience using the Aramex service from Italy and could give me an honest review. Other options would be to use any of the other European addresses - Spain/Germany/France - as the price is the same in Euros. If any of these country addresses has been used with good results, I can opt for one of them too. Thanks. p.s. I'm also hoping that plugging in the SnS country address in the billing address section will work for any of these country addresses - Am I right in assuming this? Hi If S n S service these countries addresses then yes it will be fine Sorry I cannot help with Italy etc as I have only ever ordered from US and US with no issues

I think I would be concerned if I had to exit the airport or were planning a holiday there but would feel far safer at the airport or on the tarmac With everything happening in certain regions in the world I can understand your hesitation but I suppose at the end of the day it is yours and your Husbands decision.

Just been looking at available Emirates flights to Malta for our holiday in June. We've made this trip twice before. It stopped at Libya in 2014 (obviously a no go now), last year it changed to Cyprus (fair enough). Found out it's changed again to stop in Tunisia. We only stop for 1 hour 40 minutes so I assume we'll be staying on the tarmac but am I being a bit OTT thinking this may not be a wise move given the current situation there? You will stay within the airport so should be fine :-)

It is quite strange, McB. I agree. You would definitely want to have your passport with you at all times in a foreign country. I'd keep a copy of it before sending it off. With my embassy, you apply for the new passport and they send it to the embassy. When you go to collect the new one, you have to bring the old one for the embassy staff to cancel. They just basically cut off the barcode with a pair of scissors. Granted there are about 20,000 of us in the UAE, vs 100,000 Brits, but surely it's a far safer option for everyone if the old passport just got cancelled locally. Imagine it was lost in transit and you still had your residence visa stamped in it. You would need to jump through all sorts of hoops to get the visa replaced. They changed the process due to major security issues, a lorry carrying blank British passports for delivery was robbed therefore they now do it this way. If you had to fly in an emergency the Embassy will issue you a travel document. A lot of people also do it whilst in the UK on holiday and it is sent via reputable couriers DHL so the chance of it getting lost is very slim ( You can track it and I got an email when it arrived at Liverpool passport office) Yep, my husband applied for his renewal last year and sent the documents and old passport via DHL. He got a text saying it had been received in Liverpool and the name of the person who signed for it. He got his new passport a week later and his cancelled one a few days after that. The new way is so much easier. If it's a straight forward renewal just enter your details on their online form, print, sign and send with the necessary photos etc. I hated filling in the old form by hand as I used to worry about writing outside of the little boxes by mistake  Haha not just me then MIS :-)

Im wondering if anyone can help me...... im looking for a part time nanny, is this possible? Im thinking 3 days per week. Also can u get nannies on their husband visa's? Looking for any info anyone might have. I am a 1st time mum and need to go back to work, looked into nurseries and most either don't accept 3 month old babies or are very expensive and unfortunately I cant afford what they are asking for. Also if anyone knows what the going rate is for a part time nanny would be great. Thanks in advance. Maid agencies would be your best bet, all legal and above board. Expect to pay around 30-40AED an hour I don't think ladies on their Husbands visa are legal Sorry I cannot give you advice on which agencies to use

I have also received an email that my internet has been doubled for 3 months I remember a few years back DU upgraded my package temporarily and I didnt get the email from them. So I didn't know about it. And the email apparently stated that if i dont want to keep the upgrade I must inform them otherwise i will be charged the new package price from a certain date. anyway, a few months later i wondered why my monthly fee had gone up by so much. So i called them and they told me about this email they had sent to their customers, which i searched back for and there was nothing. So they checked on their systems and said sorry mam it looks like you didn't receive it. But its too late now as its already been switched over and we cant change it back! So basically i was stuck with the new higher package that i didn't ask for! so i am weary of this new offer of double internet speed! I've been caught out in the past!! i already pay a ridiculously high amount every month and my one decoder keeps freezing all the time & we have to reboot maybe 4 times a week & they refuse to replace it. The other one works perfectly, so its not a signal issue! It does say it is permanent with no extra charges for talk, surf and watch customers but only valid for 3 months to talk and surf Lets see if I get an SMS first and I will keep the email where it says no charge

Hi all. I'm in the pool for a 9 month contract in Dubai. Salary is £500 a day (less 30% tax eventually) but food and accommodation comes out of that. I am assuming the client (a pillar of Dubai society, can't say any more) will have access to subsidised accommodation as otherwise it seems ridiculously hard to organise (due to start in a few weeks) and expensive to boot. What sort of accommodation cost would be doable on that salary (I'm thinking an apartment in a hotel) and what would I be looking at for subsistence? 3 meals a day, nothing fancy. I'm thinking travel will be by metro as the client's offices are near the airport so no need for a car or taxis. I appreciate this is a how long is a piece of string question, but would be grateful for anyone's advice as to whether this is just not worth thinking about, or if it is. There are a lot more other complications, but I'll leave it (fairly) simple for now! Thanks! This may give you an idea on the monthly cost of a hotel apartment ( Personally I don't find them cheap at all) http://www.justrentals.com/search/uae/hotel-apartments/cid/2/bd/1/fr/2/fr/2/sort/score__desc/per_page/20 3 meals a day is doable on AED100-150 depends where you want to eat

I often wonder if people could leave their phone at home for the day and not go into a tailspin as they don't have it with them. Many of my colleagues have forgotten theirs and turned around to go back from work and get it as they couldn't face a day without their beloved phone.

When I first moved here I had been to a well known sports bar in Satwa. I left early and flagged a taxi, just as we were pulling out of the hotel we were flagged down by 2 young guys who turned out to be CID they asked me for ID and once I gave it to them I was on my way. I asked the taxi driver why I was stopped and he said madam they probably think you were a lady of the night. I was horrified as I was alone and wearing jeans and a long loose top. Going to see the gynae for a check up and being lectured on not being married or having children at my age ( I was 34) and I lose count at the amount of people who have questioned as to why I don't have children never mind ladies in the clothes shops telling me that won't fit as you're too fat. Some people are just and when confronted either change their story or just look at you as if to say I haven't been rude. I just laugh it off or I would be in a bad mood every day ?

Was following an SUV Volvo car for some time on SZR which was zigzagging on the second left lane. When I had a chance to change the lane and looked who was driving it I was in shock: middle-aged Indian woman (she was wearing sari) was texting on her old styled blackberry and hardly looking where she was driving. Last Friday I took my son to a birthday party in Atlantis. The lobby was packed.... and 95% of them were on their phones. I thought how sad this whole picture was. Families and friends sitting next to each other but hardly existing for each other My friend came over to our place. We used to chat and have tea together before. But this time she was checking, then commenting on numerous whatsup groups chats/forums which were getting new updates every second. It didn't feel right to me. My friends and I have a rule that they are only allowed to check their phone whilst in the loo. Whoever gets it out at the table has to pay for the meals or the drinks. I find it incredibly rude if you are out with people and they are constantly checking their social media etc. when I visit home none of us take a phone out on a night out we just enjoy each other ls company and thankfully they aren't interested Ins social media etc

Has anyone applied for a British Passport here in Dubai recently ? Do you have to hand in the current UK passport you are using to be here legally in Dubai ? Is it sent back to the UK and leave you here as resident without your valid UK passport ? Someone has told me you have to hand in your passport and it goes back to the UK under new regulations which I think this very strange to leave someone without their British passport in a foreign country . Would appreciate current advice some someone who has recently applied. Thank you I did mine from here last June. The DHL counters did it all and it took 2 weeks door to door. New passport came first and old cancelled one with valid visa in came the day after You have to send the old one back with the application and photos for new one as you can't keep the old one and apply for a new one as they have to cancel the old one. The whole process for me was quick and very easy. If an emergency arose whilst you were waiting for your new passport you would be able to get an emergency travel document as many people had to apply for these when we had the huge passport delay a few years ago
