You can do it with almost all the banks, but the caveat being that you will be charged fees and exchange rate to do so. Even if you open a GB pound account and deposit GB pound notes, you will be charged upon withdrawal. I don't get the point of opening a GB pound account, maybe someone can shed some light on that? We have one with ENBD, but I'm ready to switch if any banks don't charge fees and apply an exchange rate upon withdrawal. My colleague had one a few years back, he said he was charged 1% on all withdrawls ( it may of gone up since then) I asked him what the benefit was and he said there wasn't really one LOL

I was in Spain last year and the sheer amount of parents sitting by the pool playing with their phones whilst telling their children to sit quietly when they wanted Dad to play in the pool with them. It was incredibly sad to see. I also noticed a rise in Mums with pushchairs busy texting and not looking where they were walking, a few banged ankles there

DH has been tasked with finding buckets and spades for the grandchildren to play with on the beach but has had no success. ... just had my first encounter with a beggar (I think). Sat at my desk in reception at work when a bloke comes in and shows me his NOL card saying he needs to get home but he has no balance left on it. As a tight, cynical Northerner I told him I had no money but he could always ask a policeman in the metro station for help. I've heard about the fake wounds and no money for petrol scams but I've not come across this before, unless it was genuine..... :thinking: The part about "tight, cynical Northerner" made me laugh I was accosted once on the street but I just ignored him which made me feel bad as he could of been genuine however there are too many scams. If I was close to the Metro I would of gone and topped up his NOL card with 20AED or so

Hi we are due to move out of our apartment (on the Palm MR) next month after 6 years. landlord selling, we are having difficulty finding a new place to live, we have considered renting on the Palm again but agents not turning up when they say they are going to or security not letting us view the apartment due to non service charge payments or agents not having NOCs etc,so becoming a nightmare and are considering looking further a field plus we need inspiration, We are in our 50's no family living at home,would like somewhere quite but do have loads of visitors throughout the year, can anyone tell me does Victory Heights have access to a pool and gym also does anyone live out at sports city apartments if so what are they like? TIA Come to the Greens/Views, the far end is lovely and quiet ( Near the school believe it or not) clean, green, great pools, free bus to metro, shops within walking distance and doggy friendly :-) and the great thing is you have to have an NOC to move in so you can find out if the LL has paid his/hers service fees upfront Failing that my friend lives at Sports City in the Canal Facing apartments ( Venetian or European) I cannot remember Big, spacious apartments however there aren't many shops/cafes/restaurants within walking distance

I have just asked my colleague who does this every 3 years He goes with the seller to transfer the car details into his name if there is an issue when he does this he doesn't go ahead with buying it Once done he gives the seller cash/cheque

I took mine to the shop where I bought it from and they said it needed servicing and a new battery which would cost AED1000!!!! I took it to an old watch specialist shop when I was in the UK and they said it didn't need servicing and the battery only cost me AED100

I was going to see him last time he was here but they moved the date of the concert We saw UB40 at the IV last year but they stopped the set halfway through as it poured with rain, hopefully we will get to see the whole thing this time :-)

Hiiiii Everyone, I'm 32 weeks pregnant and due in March.. I wanted to ask you guys if any of you have gone ahead with the process of stem cell banking.. I wasn't actually reply to the OP in anyway, shape or form, but to rawla's post! Nowhere did I say it looks like a 'gypsy' either - don't put words into other people mouths RT. It's a personal opinion, that I don't think it looks nice on young children and that they should have the choice. Everyone's ears are different, some close, some don't. Some are sensitive to certain metals, others aren't, because, gosh what a shocker - everyone's body is different and reacts in different ways. Sarahlou123 - painless injections are down to the injector. Never used Emla cream, never felt a thing. Some people are really good at injections, some aren't. Also it's not recommended to use these numbing creams for certain procedures, as it can actually affect the way the skin takes to something. Just FYI. My skin is ridiculously sensitive even with the best injector, having threading swells my eyes up like a frog and my skin flushes ( Cue all the comments in the salon about my skin being flushed) I just grin and bear it now, worth it to iron the lines out :-)

Have you tried a doctors clinic instead? Maybe try GMC on beach road, or they could probably point you in the right direction. I have tried Dubai London and Healthbay but they will only do it on the instruction from the employer whereas the employer is asking the employee to do it themselves and they will reimburse them for the tests Thanks will try GMC

Emla cream is OTC here and has all sorts of uses. It seems to be particularly popular for bikini waxing! Some pediatricians apply it before giving injections/vaccines. It's also used by people having laser hair removal. Most people I know have a tube of Emla cream at home. I tried it when I was having my Botox, personally speaking it didn't do a thing and the DR did advise to get the real benefit out of it you need to apply it hours before not 10 minutes or so :-(

I am going to lease a car for 3 months until I get used to driving over here. Looking for advise when buying second hand or new over here. Just looking for a basic car such as Nissan Micra, Mitsubishi Mirage etc but not sure wether to buy second hand, keep leasing or buy new and resell when/if I decide to leave. My Male colleague here always buys second hand, many cars sell demo ones with little mileage on the clock and still within warranty there are always good deals to be had. New cars lose their value here very quickly some up to 40% in the first year. personally speaking I wouldn't buy a Nissan Micra as they aren't a very safe car to be in if involved in a crash. Have a look on Dubizzle and go around the showrooms of the dealers you want to buy from

Is it the usual medical? Or are they testing for other things besides the usual? Try Al Baraha hospital. They are calling it a Pre Employment medical, the HIV/HEP B and Chest X Ray will be done for the usual visa purposes but they want them to have a drug test too. I have tried to help by calling around different medical centres but not getting anywhere agh! Thanks for your advice

What would help with some drivers, although not all, is average speed cameras same as they have in the UK in places. This may then stop certain drivers going over the 20kph "buffer" and then slamming on their brakes as soon as they see a speed camera. Also a great number of them need to learn lane discipline. I must admit I take great pleasure in driving past people who I have seen lane hopping to try and end up in the fastest moving lane and then getting stuck ;) It happens most mornings on SZR. Drivers in the fast lane are going slower than ones in the slower lanes What is it here with drivers desperate to get into the fast lane when other lanes are clear and my pet hate is the drivers who sit in the second to fast lane and won't budge. No wonder people undertake as they cannot get into the fast lane to overtake! They need to be fined too!!! True 'cause most people seem to have just one idea and that's to get across all lanes to the fast lane as soon as they enter the road. Dangerous in itself!! I'm more than happy to stay in the 3rd or 4th lane out and sail past all the rest :biggrin: Me too although I rarely move out of the slow lane in the mornings :biggrin:

Being an unfit, gym-averse, 50-something female with quite a few kilo's to loose myself, I would never ever go to group exercise classes. Because they indeed are scary and filled with slim women who look at you funny. Sorry, been there, done that. Pole Angels surely doesn't cater to our needs. The name alone.... As Twohoots suggest I'm starting with light exercise at home, but a good personal trainer would surely help! Following this thread to see if some good suggestions (out of experience, not commercial gain) come up. Good luck to you Amy, I'm with you! Fitness Factory has people who are all shapes/sizes/ages my friend who was about 6 stone overweight managed to lose it all at their classes. She said they were really positive/encouraging and let her go at her own pace

In fact, publicising it makes much more sense. The quality of the newer roads here is outstanding and the limits and buffers are put in place accordingly. Bigger, wider roads have bigger buffers and smaller, narrower roads have smaller buffers. The people who cause speeding accidents are either driving way over the limit or way under the limit, actually! Plus, how often do you get a chance to even drive close to the speed limit with the traffic jams we face on a daily basis, thanks to all the lovely drivers who feel the need to change lanes every five seconds because the other one seems faster :angry: Urgh the lane changers do my head in and they NEVER get any further either. It's very frustrating to me that in the UAE you have massive 6 lane highways, but so many traffic issues on them, because people don't drive properly. Yet in somewhere like Germany, where you have a two lane autobahn, with NO speed limit and everything moves and is great with no issues, purely because people are disciplined, courteous and stick to the road rules. I couldn't agree more. The autobahn is a great example! When the RTA started the Canal project, they put in place a "detour" which was exactly the same as the original road - i.e. the number of lanes stayed the same (so there was no merging) and the speed limit was also unchanged (100). This was very clever on RTA's part and widely advertised in all of the newspapers! Despite this, for months we suffered through horrendous traffic jams northbound that would suddenly disappear once you got past the Safa Park interchange. Clearly, people were hitting the brakes as they approached the "detour" (for God knows what reason) and causing tailbacks. I honestly don't think most people have a clue how much damage they cause by suddenly slowing down on a highway. The impact can be felt for kilometres behind and anyone who has used or seen traffic simulation software will understand this. Now that the Canal bridge has opened, the traffic jams have "mysteriously" disappeared and its smooth all the way to the Trade Centre in the mornings. It just goes to show how much people's fears have to do with the way we drive and how much this has an impact on traffic. The same applies to curiosity and the rubberneckers for which there is still no fine, but there should be! The German police are a force to be reckoned and especially with bad drivers as I found out when I lived there ;-) On the small roads between the villages there were a lot of crashes and every couple of miles you would see a small cross with flowers which meant someone had died in a traffic accident, I never saw any accidents on the autobahns, however drivers would flash you to get out of the way as they do here but they didn't bully you I hadn't driven my car to work for ages and did notice that SZR since the bridge has been put in is a lot quieter and easier to drive on in the mornings

I don't think anyone is saying slower driving is good or better driving. The faster you drive the longer the stopping distance is hence the reason they are so many crashes. Personally speaking I feel (SZR and other major roads) limit Is too high, as you cannot and people don't keep a safe distance from the car In front and there is too much traffic and bad driving standards. .

I completely agree with you about the shocking value for money offered by Du. But a solution to your Emmerdale fix is to install FilmOn on your iPad and record it directly from ITV in the UK. And it sounds like there's a problem with your Internet speed or router signal because even Du isn't that bad that you can only use one device at a time. Are you in a villa or an apartment? I thought the same, I am with DU and have my Iphone/Ipad and MacBook on WIFI with no issues

This has been happening since this week, I am on cruise control and never exceed 120kmph. But I have got flashed 2 times (consecutive days) this week on Al Khail street. Am I missing something? Is there a reduced speed camera? Is there a patch where the speed limit has been reduced? Anyone else experience this? I'm speaking with regard to the section between Hessa to Oud metha exit (Dubai bound). My colleague who travels the same route from JVT every day says she never goes above 115KMPh on that stretch of the road as it is a 100KMPH speed limit Perhaps that is why you are getting flashed

A friend of my daughters is visiting from UK next month and wants to buy a dress suitable for her School Prom - she is only here for a week so having one made is not an option. Does anyone have any recommendations for shops that we can try. She doesn't want to spend more than 1800 Dhs. If she doesn't get one here two great websites in the UK are ( Celebrity Boutique) my 16 year Niece got her prom dress from there. Hi! Does anyone else's child have molluscum? Which dermatologist did you see and what's your treatment plan? Cryotherapy doesn't seem to help my daughter. This is an old post from an old thread The OP had a child with Molluscum Hope this helps If you pop in Molluscum in the search bar above there are some old threads about it I would HIGHLY recommend her Pediatrician, Dr. Michael Loubser at Infinity Clinic on Al Wasl Rd. He is by far the best Pediatrician I've ever seen. There may be a waiting list to see him but in my opinion, it is definitely worth it. The other Pediatrician there is also very good and I never hesitate to see her either. I can't say enough good things about that clinic. Their number is 04 394 8994.

really? it is a good things that cuddling and kissing on the beach is getting normal in Dubai??? Why would it not be out of interest? I suppose because PDA,s in public are still illegal here. It doesn't bother me as I come from a country where it is considered normal whereas other people may take offence. I should add when I say it doesn't bother me I mean holding hands, a quick cuddle that's it!! I don't mean full blown snogs or other stuff :)

The last time I was at Dragonmart I did notice the prices were not too dissimilar to ACE even the Dragonmart staff member admitted the prices had rapidly risen. Home centre have a DSF sale on now and theirs are too overpriced. I got my set from their a year ago and it is still going strong

Hello - my question is - can I work in a different country but live in Dubai? My job would require for me to be ~2-3 weeks each month traveling to Africa, Asia and Australia... But I would still like to live in Dubai as its so central and I really like it :) would that be even possible? Would I still need a "local"work visa or can I turn a visitor visa into a residential one (with of course providing all forms etc)? I work for a global company... Thanks in advance! Are you a passport holder of one of the countries that can do visa runs to Oman if required, you wouldn't be able to get a local driving license,rental contract, or local bank account without a UAE visa. How would you get a UAE work visa unless you had a company here or are employed by a company here I imagine it is doable but could be problematic

Don't always assume new is better, it all depends on the developer and in my opinion Emaar are one if not the best with regards to quality Victory Heights is gorgeous and some, not all villas have pools. ,I think it is semi family friendly but not as busy at the Ranches. You are close to Motor City which has coffee shops/supermarkets/easy access on Hessa Street to new Dubai etc http://www.justrentals.com/search/dubai/property/victory-heights/victory-heights(all)/ct/1/lc/32/sl/8030/fr/4 This may give you some idea Personally if I had 300k I would chose the Ranches :biggrin:

Hello there, I am trying to find more details about the housing in Jumeirah Golf Estates? Is it a good community to live in? Have many houses been occupied? How is it for families with kids? I've heard there is no supermarket yet. Where do the residents go for quick shopping? We are looking at houses and they seem really nice on the net... will be moving to Dubai by summer and interested in this area... or can you suggest a similar community around the same locales... I have NO idea about anything golf related but my mum's coming over in March for a few weeks and I'm looking for some fun things to plan for her whilst she's here. She loves social golf and I was wondering are there any casual social days for ladies that she could join onto whilst she's here at any of the golf clubs during the day? Also can anyone tell me which golf clubs have the best pro shops for ladies golf gear as she's mentioned she'd like to visit a few and I would prefer to narrow down the selection beforehand ;) Thank you! Golf clothing is quite expensive here compared to the US/UK. Case in point my golf shoes here cost 30% more than at home I would buy it from there if she can Its a shame she isn't here now as DSF is on. Sorry I cannot help with the clubs for ladies social days, most of my Male colleagues play but they wait for the offers or play in RAK as find it hugely overpriced on the courses here Hopefully someone will come along with better advice :-)

....lavender oils and rosemary oils? Park n shop over at al wasl used to have the lisserand brand but I don't see them there anymore. I use them to make homemade Aloe hair oil and I am running out of my stock. Can anyone please provide suggestions on where to get these? All advice highly appreciated. Desperate Mum MB I have seen them in the Organic Café and I think Neals Yard at Dubai Mall has a selection

I love my maid, she is very trustworthy, takes great care of my kid, she is very clean and polite. Long story short, ever since my kid started nursery and she is left alone almost all day, I could tell she became a bit irritated than usual and in the past two weeks I feel she has been slagging in her job a bit. Then all of a sudden she came to me one morning and told me that she will not renew her contract this year and that is her final decision. When I asked her about the reason, she told me the stupidest story ever (Family fight and they know where she works and so she wants to move to another employer IN DUBAI so that they cant find her as she doesn't wanna be bothered by them cuz they know where she works!). I am extremely confused. I have been nothing but so generous with this woman, treated her like an absolute family member, gave her frequent bonuses, bought her generous gifts, paid vacations whenever we travel (which is a lot), I have only one child and the house is relatively small so its not that the job is this overly tiring for her. I had a talk with her yesterday and told her that she shouldnt leave for this reason and that she should leave only if she is unhappy or similar (where she said that she is VERY happy). I def sense something fishy but really worried about going through the cycle of getting a new maid...etc especially that I work for long hours and my husband is barely here. Any advises? Let her go? Negotiate with her to stay? If she is adamant that she wants to leave then you have no choice but to put her on a plane and let her go. Her story sounds very fishy and you may never get the bottom of it. You could try and talk to her again however if he mind is made up then sadly there isn't anything you can do as she is entitled to leave. If she does finish up with you I would make sure she gets on the plane and doesn't hang around Dubai trying to find another role I agree. I think her story was crafted so she has a blessing from me to find another employer in Dubai/UAE after her contract is done, which I shut down immediately. While I know letting her go is the right thing to do, I am also dreading searching for a new one especially with my very demanding job. :-( I also think she will def resist getting on a plane after I cancel her visa. I think her plan is to stay and work for someone else so I am also worried about this whole phase of cancellation/her trying to persuade me to keep her in Dubai...etc. Any useful advises? She is a live out. Give immigration a call or go and meet with them, they will give you the correct advice. Legally as she on a maids contract she is allowed to stay here and look for work, when her cancellation is done You will have her PP to do the cancellation and you have to take her to the airport and make sure she leaves if she doesn't she is still your responsibility until she has a new visa. I do not think she has a choice in this matter legally Does she have a maids contract with you?

...one more question whats the best kind of English dictionary can any one advise for kids of grade1 and grade4 thanks in advance :) There is one called Albatra however I have never used them I tend to use Amazon or Book Depository but they are Credit and Debit Card only

Hello Ladies! I'm sure most of you must have had microdermabrasion done over the past year. Living in Dubai has made my skin looking dull and I need to get my glow back! I urgently need some quick good recommendations of places that provide this service and show effective results! I was looking into Dermacare, I was told that they are not too pricey and very effective. If you guys are aware of any other places please post em up! Dr Allen at Elite Dubai Health Care City He is only one of two guys here that I would let near my face, I don't know if they are cheapest but he is very good. this person responding to these posts is bringing up old posts and looks like they are advertising their clinic... if you look there are a few posts from today from the same person and most are bringing up old topics to do with dental clinics... just something i noticed I know, I would be loathe to use any salon that is using their staff to blatantly advertised their salons :-)
