You should only pay for repainting if you have, for example, painted a room a different colour after you've moved in. It's your choice who does the repainting. It is up to the LL to repaint after normal wear and tear. If you receive the apartment or villa freshly painted then it should be the same when you leave I have had this with all 5 properties

I will be honest and advise that most if not all recruitment companies will not consider your CV if you do not reside in the UAE. Finding a role whilst living in another country is very difficult to do

Some of us expats have paid into the system most or even all of our working lives, tax and NI.............and remained abroad on retirement. I don't think the numbers of expats in that category are doing to exactly swamp the system, it really irks me to think that people who have moved to UK from other countries can immediately claim on the basis of a few months tax, and in many cases, no contributions at all. Personally I am still fortunate enough to be able to pay for health insurance, but here in Cyprus there are many Brits who are living on very limited incomes, and ironically many of those have spent their entire working lives overseas on behalf of HM forces. The government was also happy enough to take a healthy chunk of any UK investment income, not to mention in my case nearly forty years of tax and NI .............. I agree alot of Expat's arent running to the UK for treatment. I know of someone recently, who was born in the UK never paid into the system, lived in Dubai since she was 3 years old, and she walked into the UK to give birth!!! just feel its so wrong!! It is a shame they cannot police it but eventually they may and it will save the NHS millions

I get so angry when I hear these stories as it is my biggest bugbear about this town. What on earth happens to apparently 'normal' people when they get off the plane here?? From what I can tell they develop this complete air of superiority and the right to speak to people in the service industry in particular like dirt. I have, like SalsB, on many an occasion witnessed incredibly rude behaviour and actually commented. I do comfort myself with the thought though that when many of these people return to their home country (with a huge bump I suspect) they will get the shock of their lives........I so so hope so! An airborne virus attacks them. I cannot get over how aggressive people become in the car, in a restaurant, shop, ATM queue. I once witnessed a lady in a long ATM queue pick up the bags of the lady in front of her and throw them ( Yes throw) them behind her so she could move one step ahead in line, others that just push in and when you try to say something wave their hand at you, the list is endless. If I behaved that way at home I would be told to sod off or at worst probably slapped. And THAT is exactly what I hope will happen to them when they get home and try the same ridiculous up themselves behaviour - slap! lol! I do not think they would try it at home haha

Hi, I have a big table and chairs we need to sell this week. I have advertised them on here and dubizzle but no interest. Problem is it is expensive, it is a marina table 3 meters long and 8 big chairs from the Warehouse we got made especially (thinking we were going to be here for years more). I am stumped as to where to go and we don't have much time. We don't want to put it into storage but we just might have to. Cash converters on SZR There aren't many places to sell home stuff here except flea markets and the above places

Thanks all, you've been really helpful. As stated, I'm simply doing some research into what goes on here in terms of parties - it's for a report I'm working on. I have three kids and am very much on the side of budget planning - as are most of the parents at my children's school, but had heard that some families throw very OTT birthday bashes here so wanted to find out what you guys had to say. I'm glad and reassured to discover I'm the norm - and not stingy! My last few parties have been at home, very traditional planning, me organising the games and food - although we did splash out on the cakes - from Park N Shop - as I'm rubbish at baking! Sounds similar to the parties we had as kids Fond memories :-)

Last month I had birthday parties for DS and DD at home, both cost under 1500dhs. My daughter had 7 girls over and my son had 12 boys. My daughter's was a sleepover theme and my son's was a trash pack party. I made their cakes; as last year i paid 800dhs for their cakes and they were just picture perfect and no one touched them. The children all had a fantastic time. I wanted to rent a water slide for the boys as they are filled with energy but wherever I called, I was quoted over 2800dhs for just a slide! No way would I pay that much money for a birthday, I would donate it to a family who hasn't had meat in their meals in months. I have had a birthday for my son in favourite things and a joint one for both my son and daughter in cafe ceramic. The children always had a better time at home. If you have the cash to splash to have ballroom birthdays and limo ups, fine. But! If you do those now, how are you going to top that for their 16th or 18th or 13th or even 10th birthday parties, to make it special? edited by Irooni on 02/07/2013 Have you watched my sweet sixteen on TV? ;-)

The dealer will charge you a ridiculous cost. How old is the vehicle? You could try AAA they have outlets in Rashidya and Al Quoz - I take my Ford Edge there. It had a radiator leak and they managed to fix it. I have used AAA in the past for car repairs never go to the dealer as they cost a fortune!

I have been thinking about Rera but I am so afraid to cause trouble at this point, our villa is only half the price of all the similar property in our street and we really cannot afford to move right now + me being pregnant and all. So begging and pleading is the only weapon we have right now. But something is very wrong, if you've handed over cheques and they've not given you the contract. I agree why do you not have a contract?. I won't hand over any cheques until I have a contract in my hand

At my children's school people seem to do invite the whole class parties in for the early years then invite just a few friends/only the girls/only the boys once they are in Year 1. We've been to some hugely extravagant parties but my children are still only young (eldest is 7) and they don't seem to notice or care how much money is spent. As long as they have a great time with their friends and get cake and a party bag (small or large, it doesn't matter) they consider it a top party. Probably the most extravagant was held over 3 ballrooms in the One and Only, buffet for 100 children, dance troup, 7 tier cake, foie gras station, sashimi station, Moet station etc. The parents that throw the extravagant parties are all lovely people and have always been perfectly happy sitting in our garden having beverages from the cool box and eating home made food when our children have had parties. Was the party for the kids or the parents lol Foie Gras and Moet ;-)

We've tried to be tolerant of the construction noise coming from the treatment plant enhancement in AR, but it's starting before 6.30am and loud enough to wake the dead! Can anyone advise who/where to contact about this please? I was under the impression they are not allowed to start before a certain time and I'm sure it's not 6.30am. Thanks. Snugs, I think your sons good fortune and recovery was down to a good Dr on the day and nothing to do with Private versus NHS care, or geography. My friends son recently had gold standard treatment for Kawasaki disease at a Norfolk NHS hospital, yet a lady I know here had the same illness missed in her child and his outcome has been very different with her little boy being left with a heart condition. Anyway, back to broken Britain. I don't understand when people say they would never go back and I often wonder what they would do in an emergency. Would they really say to an embassy official arranging evacuation - me - go back to the Uk - not blooming likely. I think in lots of ways the UK is a bit of a crazy mixed up place but its still a great country. Mind you though, knowing how hard visa procedures can be in order to get people there, I can't for the life of me understand how these medical tourists/ dodgy visitors get there in the first place. And for those who do get a visa - why can't it be that medical insurance has to be bought as part of the visa procedure? I agree with you entirely. The UAE is home for now but I would never relinquish my passport or not return home should anything happen here

I moved over to the UAE about 3 months ago and have been trying to find a job which will pay enough for me to find my own accommodation or at least my own room. At the moment I am staying with friends which is getting a bit much. I was previously working as a TEFL teacher but am now considering a change in career, at the age of 35, I feel that it is very hard to break into a different industry here. It doesn't help that I am not entirely sure what direction to go in either. I have been thinking about getting some sort of life coach/guidance to help me narrow down my options, but I know these services are not cheep and finances are an issue right now. Does anyone have any good suggestions for me to help find my way again? I am feeling rather low, lost and I don't really want to go back to the UK as my options would be even less there with the recession. I am bilingual in Arabic (which I would have thought would be an asset here). I am sure there are many other ladies out there who are in a similar boat, what did you do to overcome it? Or how do you pick yourself up again and feel confident. I must say, my confidence is at an all time low. Sorry to be sounding all doom and gloom :( Thanks a bunch Finding work here during the Summer is difficult enough without trying to change career The job market changed in a huge way after 2009 and most companies are really picky regarding industry experience etc. Recruitment will slow right down from next week and pick up again Mid September. Good luck with your search :-)

Ruth M - going through this myself. I so want to fly back to the UK for surgery I need but it just doesn't feel morally right, given I no longer live there and no longer pay taxes. But the alternative is paying upwards of 35,000 dirham here which I simply can't afford. What to do??? How long have you been out of the UK and for how many years did you pay taxes? Morally right or not you may be entitled to it if you have paid in for X many years and have not been here for long. I do not think how many years you have paid tax into the UK matters as aren't NI contributions towards healthcare. The HRMC website states the 5 year rule however as said before if you are registered with a GP and have an NI number hospitals rarely check as they do not have the facility to do so. Even when I lived in the UK as an adult I rarely went to the DR's and he advised when I left the UK for Dubai to stay registered incase of emergency when I was on vacation. Go figure ;-)

Crikey, I can't believe some people would get on their high horse and give such answers to a very innocent question. All I am asking for is if anyone has seen a very small cool bag suitable for A CAN OF PEPSI AND A CAN OF 7 UP. I am also looking for foam or neoprene can coolers. So, today I've been to The big Spinneys in Jumeirah, Lulu, C4 in MOE, Adventure HQ and Ace Hardware. Nobody has small cool bags or can coolers. I used to have hundreds ( Care of the Rugby 7's) they usually held 12 cans tho I hope you find one Has anybody seen them anywhere, recently. Thanks.

For those ladies who said they would be straight back to the UK if they were ill, I have a genuine question. If you are non-resident, can you still go back and utilise the NHS? I thought that once you were non-resident you couldn't? Do you still pay taxes in the UK on your / your husbands salary, does that then make it okay? Am very confused! Good question! You are only entitled to NHS treatment if you are working abroad temporarily for a period of less than 5 years and had previously lived in the UK for a minimum period of 10 years. If you don't meet these conditions, then you should not receive free treatment. Sadly there is widespread abuse of the NHS, contributing to the increasing difficulty of funding treatment for those people who should receive it. edited by Nscm7859 on 01/07/2013 I read an article last week about this and apparently it is massively abused by Non English nationals although British Ex pats were on the list they were not at the top

I thought that once you were non-resident you couldn't? Do you still pay taxes in the UK on your / your husbands salary, does that then make it okay? Am very confused! If you are non-resident you cannot make use of the NHS in the UK. However there is a cooling off period where you can if you have only just moved abroad (I am not sure of the timescale). Also if you 'move' back to the UK i.e. if you need cancer treatment you may decide to move back, then redeclare yourself a UK resident you can use the NHS in the UK. But you cannot fly in and out and use it willy nilly. Although I know many people that do and it drives me mad, mostly they think because they are British citizens it is their 'right'. It is the right of a British resident not a citizen. In fact a UAE national who is resident in the UK has more right to NHS than a British expat. However a British expat has the right to return to their home country and resume residency. I have an international health policy and would go back to the UK as a private patient not NHS, I have already done so for some treatment. Unless it was a complex cancer in which case I would move back and use the NHS. But if it was cancer I would anticipate long term treatment and I would not return to the UAE, if only because I would want to remain with family after that kind of scare. But also because in all likelihood the private health plan here would create problems for me coming back anyway. If you have been out of the UK for more than 5 years then no however i know several ladies who live here and went back to give birth. They just gave their home address, were registered at a GP and a national insurance number. There is no way the hospital at home can check if you are registered with a UK GP and have an NI number

There is a program airing in the UK now called 24 hours in A&E which shows a typical day at Kings Hospital it is very interesting. They had an episode about gastric bands and the amount of people who have them paid for by the NHS. People were up in arms about it however the surgeon said that it costs the NHS 18,000GBP a year to do the op however 5 times that amount to treat a person with obesity related illnesses later in life.

Hi ladies! I hope the heat isn't too bad for you guys out there. We are having record heatwaves over here in the US. I take it as a sign for getting ready for our big move to Dubai. LOL In my continuous quest (ok obsession at this point) to find a place to live, I came acorss this website that looks legit but who knows. Can anyone tell me if you've used a property website called paynocommission.com? Good/bad experiences? I've been trying to give Dubizzle.com a chance but there are so many rentals listed there that are duplicates that it makes it annoying to look through. I keep having to filter down so specifically and then there are no results. Ugh. I have never used nor heard of the paynocommission website sorry The others yes and I found my apartment direct from LL on Dubizzle Hi sarahlou, thanks for giving me hope that I can find a home on Dubizzle! Can I ask if your LL charged you commission even though you rented direct from him? I "spoke" to one landlord but he mentioned I would have to pay the commission fee even though I am going direct to him. I hesitated and he dropped the commission to 3% of the rental price but I just got a bad feeling and decided against it. It wasn't so much the amount of money but the fact that I thought he was trying to get one over on me. I didn't feel comfortable with that. :( No commission just deposit. I have always rented via LL's and have never paid commission Commissions are only paid for agents to find ( not that they do much work) you a property You just pay deposit and rent cheques. I would never pay commission to a LL ( He should not be doing this) and is trying to get extra cash cheeky man!

In support of the UAE hospitals - I recently had an op that they no longer perform in the UK, NHS or otherwise - so very pleased about that. Considering friends of mine have had major problems with the hospitals here including losing a child through negligence then 2 others being misdiagnosed with cancer i have nothing but praise for the NHS I do believe that they can get it wrong all over the world however if i was seriously ill i would be on a plane immediately. ( Just my opinion) x

Yesterday I went to some salon who gave some offer in website. They were offering some bundle of services on very cheap price with some terms & conditions. While I was having my pedicure done I heard some Indian lady yelling at one of the staff. Later I got to know she wanted one service to be swapped with something else that was not included in package. The staff kept her calm and tried explaining that its clearly mentioned in voucher "services cant be exchanged. That lady didnt want to hear anything and literally threw a notebook on that staff girl. yelling , screaming & cursing her. Manager, than asked that customer to either lower her voice or to leave. But she didnt leave and kept cursing and calling them names like cheats and fraud. She also asked for refund (after getting almot 90% service). And in case of no refund she will not only make complaint in Consumer rights also she will write negative feed back.I felt pity for poor girl and manager. Manager was in tears and again asked that lady to leave or ultimately face the police. ONLY than that lady left. I understand that we can request to change service if we dont want to avail but if its mentioned in T&C its upto the management. That irritated customer for sure had some medical issue as normal human cant be inhuman to this extent. Humiliating these poor people who is giving you 8 services in 80 AED and than yelling and abusing. God.... I feel really sad to see such incidents. and BTW I have read that customers review on Yadig. She actually wrote it immediately after she left salon. I am speechless. The attitude of some people in this part of world horrifies me I would like to think that we are all taught manners from a small age and screaming at someone is not acceptable. People here believe it is their right to treat and speak to other people like they are sub-human species. It will get me into trouble one day but I always intervene when people are screaming at other people. It is my pet hate! Karma will get her one day

Thanks ladies, we have gone with an Emirates flight as the price was actually similar and its easier with the metro. If we didn't have kids then I agree taxis would be easier but for me its much easier to not have to be buckling two carseats into and out of cabs, folding down a pram then having to carry them into and find a place at a mall to store them all with a baby and toddler in tow vs just wheeling my tribe straight onto the metro. Also with my son getting so carsick it just makes the trip, to and from the airport much less stressful, nothing to do with saving money. We're only there a few days so will just stick to the malls that do have metro stops attached. :) I know Mall of Emirates and Deira CC are covered ibn Battuta is a short walk as is Dubai Mall ( Not nice in the heat though)

I am not entirely sure how much more "comfortable" the metro would be than a taxi. The last time we were in Dubai the metro was uncomfortably busy -- I mean you were squished up against complete strangers with your nose in the armpit of the guy beside you holding the upper railing kind of uncomfortable. My husband and I then opted to just use taxis from that point on because it wasn't worth saving a couple of dirham. It is packed on a Friday and believe me no-one gets up for a Mother I had to ask a guy to give up his seat for a poor Mum that was balancing a pram and 2 small children. Needless to say he did but gave me the evil eye for the duration of the trip whilst Mum said thank you

Hi Ladies, Has anyone seen very small cool bags for just 2 cans anywhere. My DH is having a big birthday and the boys are going for a walk in the desert and will need to take a couple of cans to keep them refreshed. We need very small cool bags, but can't find them anywhere. Any ideas? Most of the supermarkets stock them C4 had lots

It's unrealistic to think the maid (or anybody else in that situation) would not be having *** in the daytime! I know someone who came home early in the day from work and caught her maid with the gardener!

Resigned from a job in banking and got account frozen despite of not having a loan OR a credit card with them. They kept it frozen for 30days. Lawyer friend says its not something that should be done but its just one of those things that can be done, each company to their own I guess. I dont own a credit card from any bank here, have one from a bank in the UK, Im just too afraid of my own money being frozen again and not being able to pay a card off, ,etc...Also a very good idea to keep money in an account overseas that you always have access to ;-) edited by mcsk on 30/06/2013 I have 2 bank accounts purely because of this
