This has been said before - What happens if you need your passport in an emergency and it's the weekend or worse still a long weekend?? I don't dispute people holding their maids passports as majority of the time there will be someone available to get hold of it in an emergency. As for company employees NO WAY. just saying it is the way it is. Not disputing the fact that some company's do this, but there's no chance I would ever hand my passport over. Me neither. . We get a copy of our labour card and keep the PP I believe the police do advise employers keep their maids PP though

the landloards now want confirmation that the people can actually afford the rent In that case, they should allow tenants to pay monthly. Few people here can afford to pay a whole year's rent in advance out of their own pocket, so they have to rely on their company to front the cost (and fewer and fewer companies do this) or a bank loan. bank loans to pay the rent is not a good situation to be in. If you cant afford to pay for your apartment downgrade. Thats what we have always been told about Dubai. Couldnt agree more. Our company doesnt pay our rent and we do not get a bank loan nor do we have a great salary. We saved like crazy to be able to get a villa by living in a small apartment, we put away money each month for the big rent checks. I thought salary certificate was pretty much standard for anything here? Salary cert only really used for loans/CC and booze licence

Funny, I read a similar thread yesterday where someone said P/T jobs are just about impossible to come by! Is it really a deal-breaker OP, if you don't work because even a F/T job may take quite a bit of time to find. We rarely see them and they are poorly paid AED4-6000 per month

My husband has an e-gate card and we will all travel to Dubai together. Can me and the kids enter with him at the e-gate desk even though I no longer have a residency visa? Or will me and the kids have to stand in line? It depends if the desk is manned and what mood the person there is in When both parents have an E-Gate they are more likely to let you and the kids through however I have seen them turn no E-Gate people away as they said it was not fair on other people having to queue up It isnt fair you are absolutly right. I get so annoyed that me and my husband go through the E gate and my son has to then wait in line behind partners and friends that dont have an e gate but decide to go through that line with somone that does. I rarely see them manned now so it would be a squash for 2 people to go through the gates I agree they should let kids of parents who have E-gate cards through as kids cannot get them but not adults who do not have one. If everyone did that the queues would be bigger and I love the fact I have a card and can whizz through

Can I get a temporary driving licence in Doha until I get my RP? If so, how long is it valid for? I know temp licences in the UAE are no longer valid so perhaps Qatar is the same ( They have similar rules elsewhere) if you are new with no licence you can drive a hire car on your home licence and one you have a resident visa good to go

I thought there was a really good place on the beach road where the fishermen came back and sold the fish at the side of the road and then a little cafe style place cooked them. Can't remember the name of the place or the location but if someone else reads this then maybe they may know. It is very casual ( plastic chairs and tables) near the boat yard where they make the Dhows I doubt it will be licenced though edited by sarahlou123 on 29/05/2013

Hi, I'm a new mum of twin boys and looking for a part time maid/nanny for a few hours each day to help out with the boys and for general household chores. I'm not necessarily looking for a qualified nanny as I don't intend to leave the boys in their care, I just need an extra pair of hands! Does anyone have any contacts or recommendations? Also, what is the going rate? I would also love to hear from any other twin mums out there, I don't have family in Dubai so I'm pretty much on my own so any tips and advice on how to cope would be great! You will have to employ via an agency usually around 40AED per hour and they have a minimum work time ( Some are 2-4 hours) Do not use someone elses maid as other do, as this is illegal and the sponsor would incur a huge fine! I cannot advise on agencies though sorry

ladies, my husband loves football and is looking to find a group to play with on the Mirdif side...do any of your husbands play in a casual group on a weekly basis etc? He has been trying to find some guys to play with for a while now but unfortunately everyone seems to be on the Jumeirah side and its just a bit of a trek for him. Expat women has always come to the rescue for me so I promised him I would ask on the forum lol! Hope to hear from fellow wives with football-crazy hubbies! I know the Dubai Football league play at the 7's stadium but the season may not be over due to the heat. That is close to Mirdif and they have a website

I just checked dubizzle (bored today). It looks like you can still get a one-bedroom in Al Arta for 65K. Most of them seem to be between 70-75K. So you're not too much below the market rate. Your landlord isn't entitled to a rent increase. Btw we are paying 65k for one bedroom in Old Greens. Is that a lot below the market rate? 65 is slightly on the low side most are 70-90k now depending on building and size

Hi ladies, I'm hoping that someone can help me with this. I am renewing my lease with my landlord however he refused to agree to the 5 percent increase as he wanted more. Today he has come back to me and said he will accept the 5 percent, however, I must agree to vacate the flat after that contract is up (June 2014) Can he do this? What if he is moving in or selling the flat?? I would like to know what the law says as ideally I would like to stay in my apartment for another two years. My guess is that he wants me out so he can charge whatever he wants. :( He has to give it to you in writing at the end of your current contact however yes he can ask you to leave with 12 months notice

Just checked the rental calculator, we are not entitled to any rent increase. So what he's asking is clearly against the law! Can he force us to move out? We really like the place and moving again after just one year would be a big hassle! Nope Unless you are on a non renewable contract he can only ask you to leave after giving 12 months written and notarized notice. Threaten him with the rent committee and also tell him you have checked the rent calculator which is law and there is no increase Failing this take your cheques and current rental contract to the rent committee

We live in Greens and will be completing our first year in our apartment in August 2013. Last night we got an email from out LL that if we wish to continue our contract for a second year, we will have to bear a 10% increase in rent. He also mentioned that he will be doing us a favor since the rents have increased substantially. I just want to know if he can do this? I mean as far as I know the rent cannot be increased in the first two years. We are planning to write him a polite email stating the law and all. Is there something else we should be doing? Go onto the rental calculator How much do you pay and how many bedrooms I think all LL are trying it on at present!

I think what really applies here is: Current rent is 85,000. Average rent for area is 95-120,000. If she is paying more than 25% BELOW the average (which would start at 95,000) then the landlord is entitled to a rental increase of 5%. Period. If she is currently paying between 0% to 25% BELOW the average, then there is no rental increase. I'm sure they would consider the average to start at 95K as that's what the calculator is using. It makes sense given the huge variation in building quality and size that may exist in one area. First of all, the landlord can't give her an option - pay higher rent or move out so that "his family can move in." The fact that he's given her this "option" is evidence that he has no interest in moving his family into the property. Record all correspondences with the landlord and go down to the rental committee. As it is she's only entitled to 5% rental increase if her rent is 25% BELOW the current market value. hello That is what I was led to believe but what confuses me is that the rental calculator says 95-120 so which figure should she work off? He is chancing his arm Thank you so much. Reading your reply makes perfect sense. I could not get my head around it before

It would be unfair to say that I gained the weight while pregnant...i actually gained it all AFTER! Sometimes, I look in the mirror and do not recognize myself!! HELP ladies. Please tell me how you guys did it, and what works for you. ( I have always and continued to follow Weight Watchers. You can eat all foods in moderation not like some of the stupid starvation ones. I lost half a stone in the first week then 2llbs thereafter and kept it off. There is an app for the Iphone called My Fitness Pal which helps you track all the calorific value of food. Aim for that and cardio/weights and you will see the difference

New to Dubai....'just off the boat' as they say! I shall be starting work in August and my son will be in Year 1. We think we have the morning worked out with my husband dropping him off at school as i shall be at work. What are the options for after school care for my son. I shall place him in after school activities but not sure I will be able to collect him for the home time. So, is the way forward part time maid/nanny? The position would be live out as no space for live in. How much approximately is the salary per month? Any other options? Thanks Perhaps you should go down the agency route otherwise you would need to sponsor said maid

Hello ladies, my sister is renting a 2 bedroom apartment in JBR (her rent was above average at that time but she agreed because she fell in-love with the beautiful see view in the apt ) ... Anyway her second year rental contract will expire at the beginning of August so she contacted the landlord and asked to renew for a third year but the landlord demanded a rise, i told her to check the Rera calculator and it said that her rent is less than or equal to 25% of the average similar rent in the area and she is not entitled to any increase of rent!! now my question : in her contract the landlord added few additional conditions one of there condition is the following : If either party is not willing to renew the tenancy contact ,two- month advance notice shall be given to the other party prior to the expiry of the current contract. does this mean he can simply evacuate her if she refuses to pay the increase ? is that legal without giving the 12 month notice ? thank you so much for your help As long as her tenancy contract does not say non renewable he cannot increase the rent ( as per the rent calculator) and if he wants to ask her to leave he has to give 12 months notice in writing from the end of the contract. This is the LAW!
