Dear ExpatWomen in Dubai Like many of you I live in rented property which was built by Emaar. Like in all Emaar communities the appliances are Zanussi. Two months ago my dishwasher started leaking. I called my landlord who sent an incompetent handyman who didnt even know how to access the back of the dishwasher (it isn't rocket science!). I had to send him away before he made more damage than good. I then called Jim Will Fix It who referred me to BetterLife who boasts they are the service centre all over the UAE for Zanussi, as well as other big brands such as Siemens. They came out, identified the problem and confirmed my suspicion that it was the flexible drainage tube that needed replacing. The technician took apart half of my kitchen just to be able to access the machine (thanks Emaar for that) and left without fixing my dishwasher back taking all the parts with him so I have been unable to fix it and prevent it from dangerously toppling over every time I touch it. Over one month and over 30 phonecalls later, FB messages to Electrolux (the company is Electrolux Zanussi), tweets and emails have not got me any closer to 1. getting my parts returned so I can put my kitchen back the way it was, 2. resolving my issue by replacing the flexible tube. I have contacted others, such as Mplus, who cannot touch this as it is fixed to the dishwasher. And another company this morning. Nothing. Emails to Electrolux ME management have borne little fruit. The problem persists. Short of calling out the police to get my parts back, reporting the issues to the Consumers Association and calling HQ in Italy (which I will do tomorrow, since it is a holiday in Italy today) I have run out of options. I am not the only one facing issues with Zanussi white goods in Dubai. I know others. Who can we contact? Who is willing to come and make the repairs? And who is in charge of Electrolux Home DIvision here?????????? I will and indeed cannot stop, until this issue is sorted. HELP please! I had a built in one in my last Views property. I used a guy off Dubizzle who fixed it pretty quickly without having to take it out I will see If I can dig out the number as it was 2 years ago.

hi all-- i have an excellent OB/GYN but i'm looking for a good GP. so far my experiences have been appalling- they have ranged from comically incompetent to grossly incompetent and i have tried about 4 so far! i need to see someone who's not gonna just prescribe me antibiotics when i have a cold (how does anyone with a medical education even think thats okay?) but someone thorough, understanding, competent, and maybe with a little more than average understanding of the female body. i'm in silicon oasis so someone close-by ish would be great. thanks! Can you buy alcohol whilst waiting forr residence visa to come through we havnt moved over yet and where can you buy in al barsha area cheers Nope as you need your visa to get the licence and there isn't anywhere in Barsha to buy it MMI and A and E have outlets everywhere but you will need proof of getting a licence ( the slip they give you when you take all your paperwork in or with the licence itself)

Would like to ask your suggestions on which commiunity is better? Meadows or Lakes or Springs please? In this order Meadows I find it a little more spread out and it is expensive Lakes Would be my preference and I like the club there :-) Springs Some are lovely/others not so

I have had the opposite Most of my life in UK Had my bag snatched during the day in the city centre Attacked and assaulted at an ATM whilst withdrawing money House burgled and trashed Followed home through a housing estate by a 40 plus aged man who was trying to lure me into his car, thankfully someone I knew saw what what happened and intervened, it turned out this guy had sexually assaulted two local ladies in the past Almost ten years in Dubai Zilch Ten Years in Germany Zilch I am not saying there isn't crime here but no-one in my circle of friends or colleagues here have been a victim of crime. Whereas at home too many to mention and I don't come from a high crime city

Righto, so I rang Zero Gravity, the number didn't work. I then rang Skydive Dubai (04 377 8888) and was told it was nothing to do with them (despite the fact that it's all over their FB page) and to call the WAG Games on 04 377 8899. It's a fax number. My bubble promptly burst. So I went back to the WAG Games website to see if they had a dedicated number for information and they did - it was for Skydive Dubai...the 8888 number I called above. The same lady answered the phone but claimed she had never spoken to me. She then went off and asked a man if he knew about the Al Fursan/Zoltan team and he told her he didn't think they were flying any more. That's as close as I've got. Such fabulous events. Such poor PR. I am deflated just like one of those hot air balloons. That's so sad I had to laugh. What great customer service NOT

From reading your post, I must say that it does not sound as though you would like it here. Some people are Dubai people, some are not. And, based on the things you seem to hold very dear to your happiness, you do not sound like someone who will take to Dubai. Your husband's career, as a pilot, most certainly would be better for working here, but if you are miserable at home and hate everything about being here then you will not have a nice family life, so he will e in the position of choosing happy family or successful career. A lot of wives come here and while they do not love the lifestyle they adjust to it for the betterment of the family finances and soldier on, others come and complain everyday to the point where there family is at breaking point.And it sounds as though, in your heart, you have already had the DO NOT GO THERE feeling, and that may create a very unhappy life for you here - especially if things are fine for you back home and this is only for a career advancement. Not the nicest, or fairest introduction to this forum I must admit, and difficult for me to read without taking personally. To everyone else, thank you kindly for taking the time to respond and give me your feedback about your experiences in Dubai. Your honestly and insight has been very helpful. I should say first off that my partner and I are in the process of arranging the necessary paperwork to get maried if he is successful. The big day I guess will have to wait ? I am completely open to this, and see it as an adventure, but naturally enough I have concerns and questions, especially now we have a child there is a lot more to consider, and weigh up. Sue B I love your positivity, it's infectious, I got excited just reading your post. There does seem to be an excellent expat community, which would be so fantastic considering the amount of time he will be working away. From what I've read here it does sound like the new pilots will be doing a crazy amount of hours! My partner and I will be flying over together after his assesment to get a feel for the place, right now it's hard to even imagine what Duabi is like! For those who have made the move, did you bring much from home? (apart from suitcases), does anyone have an idea of the costs of shipping from the UK? Again ladies thanks so much. ? I brought personal items Books DVDs Photos in frames Cushions Quilts/pillows, bedding/ curtains DVD player Some kitchen utensils I rented my house out furnished so left a lot of stuff there for the tenant I bought the bulky items over here as there are some cheap furniture shops etc and many great second hand ( Almost new sites) I used a company in the UK ( Many years ago) to ship it all but cannot remember the name now sorry Expensive items here are Clothes but the sales are better than at home and we now can order online here and have it shipped for a small fee Alcohol, stock up at the airport British food items if they are air freighted in

I tried to order on online from Sephora recently, I had the same issue. Their customer service was truly awful, they didn't even bother to inform me that my order was cancelled until I followed up with them. It took weeks to get a refund and so many generic customer service emails when I was trying to get some information. First off they said my address was in use by some else, they it was a security issue, then they couldn't deliver to a forwarding service for 'quality purposes', then they were apparently targeted for a bulk buy resale and scam (I ordered 4 things all different!) and a few other stupid excuses! Awful awful company to deal with. I ended up ordering from skinstore.com and had no issues, they had 3 out of the 4 things I was looking for and the service was good. No issues using using my shop and ship account. I have just looked on their site ( Thanks for the tip) Did you manage to get liquid items through to here as they have things I want that are really expensive here :)

The JBR walk is fab for amenities and the beach right on your dorrstep but the traffic at night can be awful and its always very busy. I too have friends who live on the Palm, one lives in a huge villa on the frond and another on the trunk, both love it there and wont ever move. I do find the villas on there a little bit close to each other considering the cost and found the sea to be a little stagnant at times as there is no natural waves ( if that makes sense) There are some beautiful villas in both Jumeriah and Umm Suqeim however certain areas are full of construction work due to the canal project which is running through Safa Park. If i were to chose the Palm or Jumeriah/Umm Suqeim i would chose the latter and love driving on Beach Road as the sun is going down. It can get busy on big holidays and was gridlocked last night due to National Day however those are one offs

There are lots of bookshops ( Second hand ones too) http://www.livingindubai.org/8-best-bookstores-in-dubai/ I shipped all my books when I moved here many years ago. They even sold the first one of the 50 shades books here. I have never heard anything about the books you want to ship being censored. I often buy from the UK airports and bring them back with me as books in Dubai are expensive. I am a little baffled to be honest and would think the only books that would be banned are books or magazines which do not adhere to the religious and moral values of the UAE which I imagine none of yours are.

The problem is that none of the places that use original screens have the 6S one yet, they are struggling to get it in as the price to buy it in is too high. Cheap places like Satwa etc use non original parts that is why they are so cheap. I broke my 6 screen last week and Iberry at MOE fixed it in 20 ,mins with original parts for 575AED, Apple UAE is really cheap for the screen. I called the UK one and it was three times that much and they said it may take 2 weeks to fix!

Sofia is fantastic and so cheap I went there for a best friends wedding in 2014 We flew on the Tuesday from DWC with Wizz Air and flew back on the Saturday We had the hen night at a restaurant come bar with lots of entertainment including male dancers haha The bill for the night was the equivalent of AED200!!!

I have been thinking for some time to have hair extensions but I am so worried they will ruin my hair when the time comes to have them removed so I wonder if anyone can recommend a good place that do good clip in ones? Appreciate any suggestions Have you tried the Halo? I have one as my hair is long but very fine it is on a wire and fits on your crown and looks great for nights out etc The lady that supplies them has a FB page called Divine Distribution In the past I have had permanent hair extensions Great Lengths were the best and I didn't lose any however because my hair is so fine it was painful having them taken out as the keratin wrapped around the hair and it was very knotty, with thick hair you wont have that problem Micro rings are also amazing and don't ruin your hair at all. I stopped using them as they were so expensive here There is also another method which slam salon do. They are on a tape so no damage to the hair and they can be washed and reused every 3 months. I watched in amazement at a girl getting them done a few weeks back

Hello ladies, We are driving to Muscat this weekend. I read somewhere here that the Hatta border crossing was closed. Any idea if it is open now? Are there any alternate routes we should take? We usually just drive past Dragon Mart and follow the signs to Hatta. Thanks in advance! There is a fantastic app on Iphone/Samsung called Waze, much better than Google Maps It does tend to give you alternative routes to places when there are road closures/traffic problems etc

For your first visa you get 30 days plus 10 day grace period. If you need to renew again via immigration or Hatta then do it on the 39th day ( A friend has just done this with no issues)

Hello Ladies Has anyone seen tampax tampons in the supermarket here? I used to be able to get them from Spinneys but they seem to have vanished - for the past month or so. I usually get them in the Al Maya at DIFC but they are out of stock As one of the OP suggested I know use the Carrefour own brand and they are really comfortable and good plus they are cheaper

Well I learned not to buy too cheap if i am not rich enough, but recently I forgot this and suffer...:) I have some balcony furniture from Carrefour which wasn't too expensive. I washed the cushion covers at 20 degrees and they all shrinked and some even dissolved. Now the search starts to get some cushion covers made. Any hint? I know in Satwa and in Dragonmart are shops but would like a recommendation so i don't need to run from one shop to the next. I do not need anything fancy only simple covers ... I got mine from the big furniture place in Dragonmart. I think the shop was called sun something. I cannot remember the name of it sorry The shop is right at the end where the outdoor furniture shops are I got dust and waterproof burnt orange ones made and they took a week to do

I discovered the Beauty Room a few weeks ago (unfortunately before the Expatwoman offer) and I was really impressed. Ordered and they were in touch within the hour to arrange delivery. They delivered to my office SarahLou, albeit they were happy to deliver to wherever I wanted them to. I'll definitely use them again and they include nice little samples in the package as well. Thanks, I use Kerstace and with the 20% and buy two get one free offer it works out cheaper than buying it at home Without the offer it was much more expensive so the 3 I bought will keep me going :-)

I have a question for HR Specialist/Manager here in Dubai, i worked before at Big Supermarket here in UAE and after 8 years i did not realize i will in need of Employment certificate, for this i email my old employer address to HR and request for the same, i even attached my employment visa stamp and cancellation in the passport incase they dont have record. Now, the HR said they cant provide to me because during that time they don't have anymore record. Is there any chances to get one as i bad needed for my Express entry application. (Staff (but NOT ALL, most of them) in my old company are arrogant and no manners) PLEASE HELP and advise. Do you mean your labor contract? So we have got further along the job negotiation road and we think we might do it. The head hunter is looking for me too and thinks I might get a three day a week job as associate professor at the university - which sounds ideal and stops me worrying about endless unfilled days of fingernails and facials ( I have nothing against either they are just not me). We are thinking maybe Jumeira 1, 2, or 3 but can't really see what the difference is between them. There appear to be a few affordable beach front villas on offer but we have no idea whether people turn up and put up their beach tent and deck chairs for the day or not. It would be good to know - or whether it is better to pay out for a beach club and if so which ones are close by and reasonably priced? If the beach is just outside our door ( more likely it seems if we go to the palm) can we have a cabana or BBQ outside the house? Do any western women adopt UAE dress? Methinks probably not for fear of offending but I have to say Abayas look incredibly comfortable and would suit my ageing rounded body well. I imagine local dress is what is best suited to local climate - and the idea of just throwing on something loose and flowing is quite appealing. Are there any real pitfalls for unsuspecting new to expat life sort of people? Some bits seem very exciting and the idea of evenings warm enough to sit outside, friends wanting to come and visit and an opportunity to travel at weekends to see Saudi, Oman, the other Emirates and Jordan are very appealing. Do we have to get a big 4x4 realistically - will a little VW Golf not do? Go on Google street view and have a look at Jumeriah and the Palm I use the public beaches so don't have to fork out for expensive beach clubs Ref Abayas many non Western Women wear them and in various different colours, Kaftan type dresses are sold here too Travel to KSA will be difficult for you however the other areas not plus you can travel to Seychelles, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India in very short hours No you don't need a 4X4, I have had a Golf for 7 years and feel very safe in it.

Will RERA not tell you what constitutes adequate proof? Have you asked them if the Ejari is suitable? I thought they were on the tenants side for advice, etc ... The rent committee should have access to Ejari which will state who lives in the property and if they are paying rent My friend who recently won their case used this as proof. They were not asked to provide proof as that is what the Ejari was set up to do Thanks Sarahlou, The commitee hasn't asked us to provide anything. They didn'r evem talk to us yet :s. Just said this is the defense paper and u can take it home to reply or if u want we can give judgement now. Im not sure if this is just how it is. If possible, can you ask your friend. And also whether they got a lawyer or did it themselves. Did the other party have a lawyer? Thank you so much for your replies. Neither party had a Lawyer and defended themselves. The Judge was very short with the LL as said he knew before he asked them to leave that he was breaking the law

Why oh why do these people insist on placing those white stickers over food packaging? So often they are stuck over cooking instructions or ingredients. If you try to remove them the information comes away with the sticker. I wish they would place these stickers in a less important place or even make them easier to remove. Drives me barmy. :angry::cry: Paxo stuffing and the packet mixes are the worst for it I tend to Google the instructions as a result of them doing this :-)

Our family wants to have a staycation and spend the NYE here in Dubai. I'm trying to check hotels online but they are all sold out. Is it that occupied? or shall i contact the hotel directly? Which hotels would you recommend to stay and see the fireworks? I know it's expensive but it's still cheaper to have a staycation than to go out of the country on NYE Contact the hotels directly, anywhere near the Burj Khalifa or Burj Al Arab would be good for the fireworks

I realise this is 'as long as a piece of string' question but, how long after a job advert finishes would you expect to hear if you were one of the ones being considered - 'shortlisted candidates will only be contacted' is no good for impatient people :lol: I would say a week Most recruiters should be screening their responses daily and shortlisting candidates

When you were asked to vacate were you given the legal notice from the land department with the reason as to why they wanted you to vacate? I.E selling or moving in/family Everyone has to have an Ejari now when renting an apartment and the Ejari states if you are a LL or a tenant. The RC should know this as I know someone in a similar situation who recently won their case

With a baby I would say something big, safe and sturdy. You don't need posh or expensive here as they get scratched very quickly anyway I think...or covered in vomit...or worse, when you have a baby :) Toyota do some good deals as do Ford and both fit the bill with their SUV range and are good second hand. Ford doesn't lose a lot in value either Both my colleagues with kids have had the Edge and the Explorer and neither will buy brand new, they have both bought from Dubizzle for the past 5 years
