It's my first year in Dubai. Does anyone know if anywhere (like hotels etc) celebrates this night? I know it is probably a no but it was such a tradition with my family back at home I would love to carry it on here. I cannot really host celebrations at my own apartment! If my memory serves me correctly doesn't Arabian Ranches and Emirates Golf Club do a sort of bonfire night with fireworks etc

I am no expert, but I dont think you can bring your nanny from Russia. I don't think Russians are on the list of nationalities for Maids etc. If your Husband has his own company he may be able to employ her as a PA/Nanny

Try Skyex I have used them for parcels to the UK and they seem reasonable, the only thing to be aware of is the import fees at the other end. I sent my friend some makeup and a bracelet for her birthday and the UK charged her a fee for accepting it!

Sorry but there's no way I would pay this fee as it is just a money making scheme. Is your LL aware of what they are doing? There was an article to the Lawyers that write for the National newspaper See below ( 2014) note the part where RERA said it is illegal to do so It is common practice for agents to charge a fee when doing a renewal. The renewal will involve work on the agent’s part, for example negotiations with the landlord and tenant, producing the new contract, getting signatures and collecting and distributing rental cheques and so on. The charge for this can vary from Dh500 to Dh1,500 depending on certain circumstances. I am aware that Rera has said it is illegal to charge renewal fees, but this is a commercial agreement between landlord and or tenant and if either of these parties request the services of the agent they are expected to be paid for such work. In theory the cost should be paid equally by both parties as both will be benefiting from the “transaction” but this is down to pure negotiation as to who actually pays this fee.

I know this question has been asked a thousands times but I need some help. I am organizing a birthday brunch and the person has requested that it is has a nice outside area or access to a beach/pool. Any recommendations? Thank you Doubletree by Hilton on JBR did one earlier in the year and was nice I have done a Saturday one at the H Hotel on SZR Maya at the Royal Meridien Marina M Deck at Media One ( I think) Sofitel at the Palm My fave tho is the Jebel Ali Beach Resort and spa with buffet I think with food 350 without 250 It is nice up there as although not too far out of Dubai it feels like a mini vacation. Unspoilt beaches and 3 pools with swim up bar

I hate Halloween. It's just another money making American import. We just watched the football, had a few lagers and ignored the door if anyone rang the bell  It is not ánother'money making American import. please read this you might be surprised where it originated from! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween Now, I realize that a good amount of children that come to the doors do not celebrate Halloween in their countries so are not familiar with Etiquette, so I think rather than ***** about their behaviour you could use it as a learning tool for them. Why not get a big group of parents together and the week before halloween go around to schools and explain the etiquette in the form of a short fun play or something...dress up in scary costurms etc....ask newspapers in other languages to explain in short form what Halloween is and the etiquette and why you say trick or treat and also about being greedy. brw, asking for money is also part of it if they do not get a treat. In Canada we had Unicef boxes. BTW in Canada we also have parents in cars driving around so it is not just here. We just do not have maids doing the parents job. Anyway, just my thoughts. I know the origins of Halloween, it's just in the past few years it's got sooo commercialised it's beyond silly (but every festival is now, I suppose). Think I went trick or treating once when I was about 10. I went out wearing a black bin liner, carrying a carved turnip and made the grand total of 50p  It was a binbag and fake vampire teeth in my day too haha

LMR10 If the lady offering to clean for you isn't sponsored by an agency be careful Maids are not allowed to be on their Husbands visa or moonlighting. They aren't insured so it isn't worth it and the government do clamp down on this. If anything went wrong you don't have a leg to stand on It is best to use a legitimate agency as you are covered for every eventuality

I have just tried to make an appointment with Dr. Anna following some of the recommendations here, however, if you are cash paying customer you get to go on different days than if you are paying thru insurance. Can anyone enlighten me why this is? It's like a 2 weeks different in dates too ... Hard cash probably brings more to the client than insurance does

Heard that there was a lot of 'drive-by' trick or treating this year. Are people really THAT lazy now? What is a drive by trick or treat?. Park outside the house, beep and wait for the occupants to come out with the sweets haha Pretty much yeah! Driving from house to house. Lots of it going on in Arabian Ranches apparently. Noooooo! That is terrible, I would of refused to come out. How lazy is that.

Great thank you! I take it they have a minimum amount of time per week that they would do? How long would you normally have them for with a one bedroom apartment? Sorry, totally new to all this! :-) I think it is a minimum of four once a week I have only ever used a maid once and she finished the entire place ( I was moving) in 3 hours Let me see if I can find the housekeeping one and then give them a call and ask

Has anyone had their hair done by Toni and Guy DIFC? I have longish hair but it's thinned a lot since living here so I'm going for an edgy short cut. It's a brave move to go short so thought going with a well known salon franchise might be the best option??? That isn't always the case as there are some fab "non franchise" places here. Toni and Guy is huge in the UK but I don't know anyone here who goes there. That is due to there being so many other great hairdressers. Hopefully someone will come along and give you a review

Hello Abu Dhabi Ladies, I know you have probably answered many similar questions in the past but I would really appreciate what, in your opinion, is a realistic monthly salary to live comfortably (not luxuriously) on in AD. My husband has been approached by a company but rather than offer him a package they have asked what his requirements are and his expected income. Medical comes as standard but we need to factor in accommodation, schooling for two and monthly living costs. We have done some research and reckon about AED 40,000 a month. Is this realistic, too optimistic or not optimistic enough? Thanks in advance. How old are the children? and will they share a room or need their own rooms ( Thinking about size of apartment/villa)

hello, i have a question regarding my work: well, the story goes like this. i was in a tourist visa before, i applied in a medical center, two employees of the center interviewed and recruited me. the offer is low, even though im a bachelor graduate, well I accepted it, because one of the employee who interviewed me looks nice, she said to me during the interview that if they hire me, they dont want me to accept any other job offers, or lets say that me calling them telling that i cant accept the offer because the other company offer me a higher salary. well me, being a first timer here in uae, i accepted the offer, because i said to myself that it is my first time, and i cannot demand a higher salary, one reason also i said yes because one of the employee told me that ill be working with her on a straight duty.. she even said that no one can harm me, they said they can only offer me 1500 dirhams thats all.. because of the good aura that the other employee show me, i accepted the offer knowing that even if the salary is low, i know they are good person.. two weeks before the expiration of my visa, i already gave them my requirements, i rejected other offers because i want to keep my word that ill be working with them.. when the day comes that i need to exit, they said they already processed my visa, i just have to wait. but they lied 2-3 times saying that they processed my visa, i stayed in oman for almost 20 days, with lot of expenses.. but during my interview i wasnt able to sign any job offer or contract.. when finally they processed my visa and it has been already approved they ask me immediately to report to them.. i had there 4days of training, and according to my visa my position is archives clerk, i was then shock that i was given multi tasking work.. it feels like all their works are given to me, reception, assistant of the HR, assistant for the HIM, billing coder, medical coder, now supervisor in cleaning, almost everything.. the person that i said was nice turned out to be a bad person, she scolds me for little mistakes, gets angry with me, even for a small problem that i didnt create.. she blames me almost all the time.. one time, she got mad because, she is yelling in the another employee, and asking something, but the employee didnt understand what she means because they are of different nationality, and sometimes its hard to understand you know because of different language. i explained to the other employee what she is telling in our own language, she got mad because i was degrading her because im talking in our own language in front of her, she didnt hear my explanation, she automatically got mad at me, even though i was just explaining to the other employee what she means in order to avoid mis understanding, and now it turned out to be my fault. she said she doesnt like me and she will transfer me to another department next day.. and when the next day came, it seemed like nothing happened, i apologize to her, and she even apologize to me.. that is what im waiting for, but i didnt mind it anyways.. another incident happened yesterday, she was on a leave, i wasnt informed, but we saw each other outside work, and told her that one of the boss, the female one, asked for my report for my first month, she said okay put there what you learned from me.. i said yes mam finish.. and in the afternoon she came, i thought she just visited i didnt know she came for a duty.. and later in the evening, she again got mad because, why i am submitting my report to our female boss, without her consent, i cannot answer her because she is my head and i respect her.. i didnt even know that she wants to read first my report before i submitted it, i gave her a copy and she even got angrier because my report is all about multi tasking work and said that she dont need a staff under her doing multi tasking work.. the problem is this, first, they said ill be in a straight duty, but then not, they only give me 1500 and everyday i have to spend 8dirhams for the bus, i have to wake up early to catch the bus because it will take 20dirhams per ride if i take by taxi.. i didnt mind it because i said, ill just have to live with it because i have no choice, second the male boss told me to work under her, my head/supervisor, the other boss the female one told me to do reception, hr, supervising the cleaning, etc.. and then my head is angry with me, becuase im doing multi tasking work, i dont understand who really is my boss in them, who i will follow, my point is why dont discuss it together instead blaming all of this to me, im just following orders to those who are higher than me.. im so stressed.. i want to cancel my visa, i am just 1 month and 3 days from the company, i cannot live and work like this, i am in unlimited contract, im afraid i have to pay a lot of expenses, i am still in debt to my relative because i owe them money so that i can travel here in uae, and now i think if i will cancel i will be banned, please, i need advice.. help me. If you have an "Unlimited" contract you can just resign and leave immediately, The company will have to cancel your visa. You would then have to find a role in a Freezone as your current salary isn't enough for you to find a role outside of this area If you are on a "Limited" contract then you will have to forfeit 45 days salary and will get a 6 month immigration ban

Thank you ladies for your advice and replies. I will pursue the RERA route.... It is the Rent Committee that deal with disputes not RERA If you pursue a case though you have to pay 3% of your annual rent to open the case which could take months If you win then you get the 3% back, if you lose you don't

Does anyone ever get the urge to slam on the brakes to freak them out when they do that?? I've only had the guts to do that once, but it was really effective... they stayed about a mile behind me after that :p Normally when I see one coming I just train my eyes on the road ahead of me so I don't have to see what's going on in my rear-view mirrors and let all their agitation go to waste :p I do but don't ;-) The worst one I had was during Ramadan years ago. I was overtaking in the fast lane and a huge 4X4 came up racing behind us all flashing his lights like crazy, as i tried to pull into the second lane which was gridlocked he went to overtake me and then slammed on. For the first time ever i thought i was a gonner,my car skidded as i braked then he shot off weaving all over the lanes It doesn't help that people sit in the second to fast lane cruising at 80 as it makes it difficult for people to overtake safely. I now use the first and second lane as no-one seems to like those lanes and you don't hit traffic

Essa seems like a good call then :-) How much are we talking for hair? I get an all over colour and a cut. At a Western salon anything from 250AED upwards for a colour, cut from 150AED upwards and then a blow dry which varies Highlights are more Salons that are recommended are Hairworks Ted Morgan Slam Salon Ink Roots Jumeriah I think it will also depend on your hair colour and I am not being rude but be careful if you are a blond as many cheaper end salons I used to go to didn't work well with blond hair and put neat bleach instead of a high lift tint on it and it was snapping off. They didn't know how to work with blonds only brunettes etc

I've heard that rents are going or should go down but I'm not sure they actually are. Any thoughts? There was an article in the news a few weeks ago that showed the areas with the biggest reductions . Apparently the Ranches was the highest at 15% but they were for the 5 and 4 beds. Perhaps tenants are downsizing I think that they are dropping but the main rental websites aren't showing this yet, as most people are bartering with LL directly The rents in my area have dropped around 3% but then the LL are wanting less cheques for a cheaper price People are more wise with regards to their rights now and are staying in current properties rather than moving each year I do feel once more units come online at the end of this year and next year supply will outweigh demand and then we may see bigger drops

I'm very glad to. I really find the driving here very intimidating and dangerours. These people swerving around the road, on their phones or as you said putting on make up, it's crazy. Add in tired truck drivers who have been awake all night and crazy speeds. The law that you can flash your lights to make people move over...is that actually a law or is it something of a myth? I've often wondered about this as it seems a dangerous way to have things arranged. I wonder about the reporting of these events, does it have any effect on these people at all? I don't think there is a law to say that you can flash someone as tailgating is illegal hence the new cameras on SZR I actually saw a guy in the fast lane face timing someone whilst on his Ipad last week!! He was holding the Ipad up and chatting away not even looking at the road. I would like to think that if they get a call from the police that it will deter them but I wont hold my breath

I'm so furious with the crazy lady driving her grey Jeep on Al Safa Street this morning... I just wanted to ask you whether you got to wherever you were going any faster by tailgating, flashing, honking and waving your arms around at me? I don't understand how you thought I could drive any faster or move out of your way in the slowest lane when there was a car in front of me, construction on my right and a traffic blocked lane on my left? I mean seriously? Did it look like my car had a jet pack to fly over the line of cars in front of me? Anyway I hope you have realised that such horrid behaviour on a Monday morning doesn't go unnoticed... you should be duly receiving a warning sms from Dubai Police to whom I complained... and ur lucky I didn't report your other crimes such as applying makeup while driving (yes love I noticed!) I have started to get the metro to work as I am so sick of the drivers here. Recently seems to have got worse again. I now get into work calm and less stressed than when I was driving. I am glad you reported her.

Most contracts have it written into them that any work which costs less than 500AED is to be paid by the tenant Does yours have anything written into it? With regards to seeking advice at the Rent Committee you would be asked to open a case which costs around 3% of your annual rent, if you win then you would get this amount back however I feel it may cost you more to do this than the cost of cleaning the vents. It may be that you have to say oh well and it part and parcel of living here which isn't right but that is how it is
