I need to get a costume for my 2 year old DD for her nursery event. even though we don't celebrate Halloween i want my daughter to be part of the event because i know she will enjoy it, my dilemma is i really am not willing to pay 150 to 200 AED for a costume. any ideas where i can get something cheap in Abu Dhabi or if i can make something for her? White sheet with eye holes cut out as a ghost? Black leotard, footless tights etc for cat Witch costume should be easy too. Black abaya stitched short and a black witches hat which you may get from the supermarkets and you can get the broomsticks cheaply in the supermarkets, you can also paint her face green and blacken the teeth

I am currently in the process of seeking admission for my DS for grade 7. I have toured few schools, however this is a very hard task. As always JC is a first option but know as a fact that its tough to get a place there. I have looked at English college too and quite liked it. Besides been close to our home it has a strong teaching system (or so it seems). I would love if i could get any feed back about English college as my only reservation is how their primary school was closed suddenly. Also any feed back about GEMS WSO would be appreciated. Does anyone know for sure when the dry night will be? As two different establishments have told me different things, one said thursday night another said friday night?? Still,I don't see any benefit in judging people's possible rudeness as, one, it is subjective and cant be proved; two, if I think so-and-so has been rude then it does nothing for my health: my mind will be troubled, I might get a bit down, my blood pressure might rise, and my stress levels might follow my blood pressure up a notch or two. So there are no emotional or physical health benefits in assessing people's rudeness. I think this comes down to 2 camps of people; them who will not tolerate rudeness of any kind and say something to the person and them who find it perfectly easy to ignore and not react. There is no right or wrong way - but you have to understand that there are people who can simply not let these rude people get away with doing as they want... and I am one of these people! In my upbringing it is rude and ignorant and I will say something 9 times out of 10! I do not think I am judging someones rudeness as I will only ever say something if I know 100% they mean to be rude. I do however agree with the bit about the health, sometimes I wish I wasn't one of the people that rudeness bothered so much as it can put me in a bit of a bad mood depending on the severity of the incident! But I am and doubt that will ever change - not while I live here anyway ;) The only thing that boils my blood is aggressive drivers as their driving could serious hurt or kill someone. If I have to say something to a rude person I don't get wound up. I politely say my peace and move on

For sure for sure Brits have a much better professional work ethic than I would say most cultures. Others don't have that work ethic because they just don't know it and haven't been exposed to it. We know to give the customer their rights and time etc, but when people are messing about on their mobiles etc I think they are just not aware or just don't feel that work-ethic responsibility that has been imbibed in us. Many times I am waiting for the Filipino/Indian/any service worker to get off their phone or stop chatting, and it doesnt bother me in the slightest. Everyone seems to be plugged in and chatting these days incessantly; may be we dont realise coz we are here but may be in the UK they are all now plugged in and chatting also. I think its the times; not the place in which we live. I can honestly say that I have never seen shop/restaurant/banking staff using their mobile in work hours. Most of them are so busy I doubt they have time to text etc It isn't the done thing at all

Other than "people on the street", what about the "Customer Service" people that are so rude here? They look like they are doing you a favor by serving you and as if you asked them for a million dollars when you request another size or to call around to other branches. Had a "lovely' experience today at Etisalat, the very “polite” CRM person who was supposed to hand out tickets at the entrance was instead chatting on his phone leaving everyone to line up and the staff inside not being able to help anyone as no one had tickets. When gesturing to him that people were waiting, I was met, when he eventually returned to his seat, with a 5 minute intentional wait while he stared at his pc and played with his phone. Upon leaving the branch, I saw another long queue of people, of course he was not at his desk again. This time, I passed him on the way out while he was at the coffee machine admiring himself in the reflection of the door, fixing his head gear. Seriously?! I was in the chemist last week. Four staff, two customers. The pharmacist was serving the lady in front of me, two staff disappeared into the back and were chatting about their weekend, the other lady was stood in front of me texting/playing with her phone. She finally looked up and said "oh are you waiting to be served" I said yes but you were busy with your phone. Her reply was "No I wasn't" in a sarcastic tone. I walked out and said I shall go somewhere else.

I think traffic in general is just BAD - getting back to the old days SZR is stop start all the way down from the Greens to DIFC I sit in the slow lane now and overtake every other lane most of the way down :-)

It was joy to be there. I trust you were also given seats on public transport if you had to stand. That is of my main gripes here, women are supposed to be respected, but how many men and most of them young, ever give up their seats for you on the Metro. As for the driving, been back from two weeks hols and it seems so much worse than I remember :( I only got the bus twice and the old men waiting at the bus stop said "After you" it was so sweer. Thankfully our buses aren't busy in the morning however I am more likely to give up my seat Did you have a good time?

Someone suggested going to Dubai Mall/MOE but this will be expensive. Will I be able to pick these up in Satwa? Anywhere else? TIA. Hi Susie Q I had a similar problem with my Golf Apparently this is a common problem with VW. Mine starting sagging in the middle I took it to AAA in Al Quoz and if my memory serves me correctly it cost me less than a 1000 to fix it Al Naboodah quoted a ridiculous price!!!! Someone please help me :') I'm about to tear my hair out! So I need to do my medical and my Emirates ID tomorrow, but I don't know where to go, and the PRO is being of very little help, bless him. I have managed to establish that although the Karama one takes less time as there are less people that go there, I hate the drive, it's more expensive to do it there, and apparently you can't do medical and EID at the same place, so I know I must go to the Al Quoz one as you can do both there apparently. However PRO just keeps saying "Al Quoz typing centre. You know Al Quoz. Yes go to that typing centre" What exactly is it called? Where abouts is it? Al Quoz is a pretty big area. Any directions? I highly doubt it's "just a different cultural way", I think they know it's rude and don't bother to care. I'd like to know if anybody can cite examples how/when/where it's culturally acceptable. I especially detest men treating women the way OP and others have described.... Surely kids are taught manners in schools. Please, thank you, no pushing in etc. Perhaps this behavior is taught by their parents or they grow up and start to behave this way. I know that we are taught good manners at home but cannot comment on other countries except Germany where they also like to queue

Hello ladies, we got a new maid a month ago and struggling with our food arrangments... When we interwied her on the food she said she does not eat red meat (allergic), we were ok with that said she could cook something for herself but upon arriving she told us she is also allergic to milk (but eats ice cream ;-) ...) She already ate pork and beef and yoghurt in our meal either by choice or by accident and nothing happened. She is just super picky. So now most of what we eat she does not and she is pulling her face on most of the other stuff and I am kind of sick and tired of it as she is expecting her food cooked... We are waisting so much food now as if she doesn't something she barely touches it (so I end up eating it 4 days in a row) but then hoowers tons of fruits (but somehow only the expensive types...) then when she likes something she'll eat double to what my husband would so even me cooking to have some for following day doesn't work. Well,enough of my rant, I am seriously considering just giving her a food allowance on the top of her salary, getting her a small fridge and getting her cook her own food. If we go that way I'd prefer she'd sort out her complete food shopping and don't touch the family's so I don't have to deal with it again. So now, how much should we give her as food allowance? Just calculating our food shopping/month/person it works out about 500Dhs a head but isn't that too little for a single person? We had a live in some time ago but never delt with this,she ate with us so this is completely new... I couldn't survive on 500 a month. I don't shop at the expensive shops ( waitrose etc) and spend closer to 800-1000 a month ( excluding toiletries)

sounds like you should all come and live in Sharjah! On another note, Brits are brilliant at queueing and really being around non-Brits all the time for fifteen odd years I am always really pleasantly surprised by how really really polite Brits are! My kids' environment is totally non-Brit, then when they come across (like once a year) someone from the Mother Land they are amazed by the kindness and gentleness and politeness of British people. As for queueing, we are just really good at it; other countries don't know what we are on about when we stand there patiently waiting for our turn. Pushing in seems so rude to us, but often it does not mean to be a rudeness towards us, just a different cultural way. Sadly many Brits change when they come to Dubai. They wouldn't get away with queue jumping or being rude at home but here they do. .

I really want a slow cooker, but the thought of it in my apartment - which has no windows, only doors on to the balcony, it would make everything smell - so was wondering, would you ever leave it cooking outside (Ground Floor) to avoid having indoors smell?? So went to see the film last night having read the book and seeing the reviews and I can report that they have done a brilliant job. Its not often that I feel that way with screen adaptations, however in this case they stayed very close to the authors narrative Casting was spot on, Rosemund Pike as Amy-superbly glacial,Ben Affleck as Nick- not as dislikeable as the book but hey ho forgiveable. Few chuckels in the theatre which did make me wonder if I'd missed something in the book. Maybe it was the husbands sitting in the cinema, nervously wondering if they too had an Amy like wife sitting beside them ;-) I am reading the book at the moment and want to see the film. Our next door neighbour has gutted his villa and built an extension - I've had non-stop pneumatic drills and banging from 7 am til 5.30 since I came back from summer, 7 weeks - he's had the entire floor up 3 times...I've complained to Emaar as has my landlady and the lady living the other side of him... This morning I caught a builder filling the cement bucket up from my outside tap !! We've had cement splashes on our car bonnets and men standing on my wall looking into my kitchen for hours at a time... Been an absolute nightmare....sorry to hijack...just in the mood to rant !! lol Were Emaar any help? I had to go to them when my neighbor was using my balcony as an ashtray. They wrote a firm letter to him and advised that if they didn't cease then they would be fined and the police called. Also have you spoke to the owner of the property. That may help

In regards to that, I thought it was their job to bag groceries... I'm talking specifically about the yellow jumpsuit guys in c4?? I meant when there aren't any proper bag packing blokes available. People just expect the till staff to pack for them while they just wait doing naff all, totally oblivious to the massive queue building behind. Couldn't agree more MIS!

Its just plain rude and I find Dubai has made me quiet hard, it just happens so often. I always stop people to trying to push in unless they have asked which rarely happens. We are all busy and have people waiting sorry love! Recently had a guy try and jump the queue when I was buying a bottle of water, I said excuse me and he started shaking his two bottles of water at me, did it back with my one and he got stroppy like he had been caught out and still tried to jump me... rude! I genuinely cried in one shop last year at home over Christmas when the staff and customers were nice to me! I am surprised at how rude guys are here. I believe in equality but shoving past me into the lifts, not saying thank you when I hold the door or even holding it open when you are behind them. At home men are very chivalrous but here not so much. Manners cost nothing and if you try and say something you tend to get a mouthful. I would never dream of being that way although you are right in saying Dubai does make you hard.

I was about the park my car near gym, when some guy drove in fast from behind and started parking on that only spot I was targeting. I came out of my car, walked to him and told him about my intention and he happily left the place. But before I reached my car again another guy who was observing everything I was doing drove in and started parking his car (and attention! I have a baby bump) and I honked to remind him of myself, to which he came out of the car and started shouting at me "what? I am not stupid like you". I was simply speechless. What he did as a driver was rude but shouting at a pregnant woman and calling her stupid - what is it? I think shouting in general is rude regardless of pregnancy

Ilovecandy - your post made me laugh thanks. A similar thing happened to me last week, a woman pushed in front of me in Geant and when I questioned her she said 'my husband is in the car and he doesn't like waiting'....'agghhhhhh' why in earth did she think that was 'ok' then to push in front of me? If I have a trolley full of stuff and the person behind me has only a few items I will always let them go in front of me but in the 15 years I have lived in the Middle East this has never been reciprocated. I am not singling out any nationalities here as I have seen them all do it - I just don't understand it.....are they rude or simply oblivious? Rude and believe me they wouldn't get in front of me nor would I let them push in. I think many people let them and don't say anything therefore they feel entitled.

I purchased a Dyson DC59 animal vacum after researching it and now I am not sure what to think. The online info says that it does carpets and I specifically asked the clerk at Ace if it does carpets and he said it did. While I love it on hard floors, the vacum does not want to move on carpets, I can pull it toward me but cannot seem to push it away from me. I don't see a button on it to change it from hard floor to carpet. Am I missing something. If I want to take it back because of this, I am afraid that they give me a refund. would not be nice...always this difference between public and private...in my home country that would be not possible, that you treat public and private differently... We don't pay taxes here, have UAE passports or voting rights etc therefore unfortunately we cannot compare it to our home countries.

I have never had any issues with hairdressers back home and as the OP said I would know exactly where to go. In the beginning had a couple of issues here as many hairdressers didn't know how to colour blond hair but I have never experienced any disasters. I have only used 2 salons here in 7 years and have never had problems with any of them. Infact I would rate one of them cheaper and much better than the hairdressers at home

I hope you find a buyer for your dress OP... But if the bride decided to change the theme after you had already spent that amount of money surely she should bear some of the costs? Otherwise it makes her seem like a bit of bridezilla expecting you to be out of pocket and make yet another dress because she changed her mind. Good luck with finding a buyer - it is a nice dress. thanks Genie... i hope i find someone too... she changed the theme in an absolute huff and unfortunately is turning out to be quite the bridezilla (aren't they all the month before the wedding!)... unfortunately she's close family so i can't vent much and will just need to get another dress stitched... this time round though i intend on making it with some cheap satin instead of spending a crazy amount on pure chiffon... in all fairness though she gave us the colour and we could come up with any style or material we want... i like an IDIOT went and picked the most expensive fabric in town... and now at an absolute loss coz i never wear western formal wear anyway... being from india most of our formal functions would involve wearing formal indian wear... She should pay for the new and old one. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend In the Summer and she wouldn't of dreamt of charging us for the dresses/alterations. I hope you manage to sort it out

To cover unpaid bills. Really starting to feel like I am being nickeled and dimed to death! Whenever I have left a property in order to get my rental deposit back I have had to provide proof that I have paid the final bill and I always ask for the final bill when I move into a property Surely a tenants deposit is there for LL to pay the final bill if the tenant does a runner?

Hi everyone :-) Does anyone know where I can buy fake tan from? I'm based in the West Bay area and can't find it in the City Mall... One of the department stores did have Clarins but only stocked a variety for darker skin and I'm really pale, so it would have looked strange. I'm after something like St Tropez, L'Oreal or Garnier. Thanks! if you were in Dubai I could let you know where St Tropez stuff is :-( We don't get Garnier or L'Oreal here in Dubai either.
