Thank you for your replies. It does not have to be licenced we are in Tecom area but will travel around. The Montgomerie has a nice bar and restaurant overlooking the driving range. I haven't been for a while but they usually have some classic English dishes on the menu. I also like Maison Mathis at Arabian Ranches golf club and they have just changed the menu so lots of new dishes. For a casual breakfast or lunch the Sports Cafe at Jebel Ali Hotel is nice, especially if the weather is nice to sit overlooking the Marina. If you have the blue entertainer book there are vouchers for the Dhow and Anchor or Latitude which have a British theme buffet one evening per week. For more upmarket dining there is Rhodes Twenty 10 at Le Meridien Fish and Chips at the monty last week was AED 150!!! That's 24 quid!!!!!!! And that's one reason I never convert back when we do go out ;) That is why I go to cheap places ha....:-) Yes, but you're younger than us and go out more ;) Not anymore. I cant remember the last time I went out out ha. Prefer concerts and weekend hotel stays. I'm not that much younger than you :-) and I never go out mid week as its a school night haha

Some relatives say they can reach the phones of the passenger, however there is no answer. It's about 19 or so unrelated ppl claiming this, so the possibility of someone leaving the phone at home or elsewhere seems out of question. Also some data messaging services seem to show delivered messages without any response. These families have signed a joint petition to persuade the authorities to GPS track the phones ASAP. If this is all true...there could be hope!! Really praying for a miracle! I hope so too edited by sarahlou123 on 11/03/2014

Can anyone advise me where to take my parents with food similar to Dhow and Anchor as my mum only eats plain food and struggles with spices now she's older. Any particular area and does it need to be licensed? The Dubliners can sit outside It is near the airport though Biggles at the Meridien Hotel Irish Village Mcgettigans ( JLT and Trade Centre) Sorry they are all other side of town

GBP20 for a roast dinner wowza that's high Sure but being part of a 5 star hotel in Dubai, don't think it's too bad ;-) A pizza for 110 dhs in the Ar mani hotel might make a few Italians cry too. I agree with you that is why I make my own with all the trimmings for 4 people and it tastes better hehe

Are there an shops in Dubai that sell that type of furniture other than Ikea? I'm just not a huge fan of plywood. Pan Emirates Home Centre Home Centre always has a sale on and if you go onto the Mall of Emirates FB page there is an offer for Home Centre and 20% off Really? I've never seen solid pine furniture there? I shall have another look. Ignore my comment I thought you meant the pine coloured not solid It is really hard to find certain colours/types of wood here. I looked for oak last year and couldn't find any except C&B which was way overpriced

Has anyone been to the Dhow and Anchor at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel lately? We went there recently and where shocked. While it is looking nice it had nothing to do with the old place and the prices are just a rip off compared to what it was. I think it would have been better for the hotel to rebrand the outlet rather than call it a refurbishment. I went last year and also found the food bland and massively overpriced

There are many points that the QR apologists are missing: 1) They are recruiting Westerners yet expect these Westerners to leave their Western values at passport control. By values that means not being punished for boiling an egg in ones own home and accidentally setting off a fire alarm, or saying good morning to the security. If they are so concerned that people adhere to their own rules, why not hire Qataris...ah yes that's right - I don't see a queue of young Qatari females who are willing to fly long hours waiting to sign up for these jobs. Or better yet, employ young men. 2) I understand trying to look out for these young women who are away from home - however, everyone deserves some freedom and keeping someone under lock and key is not the answer. These are grown ups, not children. If they are worried about the "trouble" they will get themselves into, let them know of the realities of working in the Middle East and let them get on with it. 3) Qatar is one of the world's richest countries and is trying to attract investment from across the world and be seen as an international business player. How can they possibly expect anyone to take them seriously if they cannot address basic human rights and are getting such bad press? 4) QR must be answerable to their employees just as they expect their employees to be answerable to them - to fire someone and deport them instantly without a reason, expecting someone to leave all their belongings and get on an immediate flight is inhumane. if that person did something wrong, explain the incident and the consequences instead of treating people like animals. 5) I agree with expecting them to complete a certain number of years' service before getting pregnant - the same goes for many jobs where there is a huge investment in training. But the heavy handed approach of keeping these young women away from any interaction with the male species is ridiculous - as if they are a bunch of nymphos who cannot keep their hands to themselves! Bottom line is - Qatar has a long way to go to prove itself as a modern country which respects women - this dichotomy of hiring young attractive female staff and then keeping them like animals because they don't trust them does not sit well. Qatar may have money to buy things and priveleges (let's face it the 2022 WC was not awarded on any other grounds) but it cannot ignore these human rights issues. ps - Maroosh I don't know anyone who came here to get knocked up within a year or to find a man. Dubai has to be #1 worst place to find a man so don't think that argument stands up! I couldn't agree more on this area of the world being the worst place to find a man!

I am a woman :) and I will be sponsoring my daughter for her visa. To do this, I need a ‘No objection certificate’ from my husband. Does anyone have a pro-forma they can give me? Go to one in the typing shops and get it in Arabic also ( Incase they require this) Thanks for the reply, but I have not arrived in Dubai yet; I am trying to get as much of the paperwork done as I can before I leave. Is this a form that has to be filled in or is it simply a letter that has to be written by my husband? Do you know where I could get a pro-forma or example fromfrom? I don't know if there is one and I have never come across one online etc I imagine other posters will comment and give advice It isn't a form no but I believe it has to be written a certain way and some government organisations want it translated into Arabic the correct way

I've been using Ariel but have started getting an itchy rash which I think is linked to my nut allergy. I looked to switch to Persil but that has almonds in. Which washing powders are you guys using? I can't get the one I used to use in the UK here. I use the Persil liquid from C4 in the big blue bottle I don't know the ingredients though sorry

i have seen a report that they found a door and 4 poeple were on the flight with fake passports... It doesn't look good. They have now said it wasn't a door but a Pontoon? 2 passports were fake they were reported stolen from an Austrian and Italian man I would of assumed when they were reported stolen they would of been flagged and cancelled. Huge breach of security which is alarming.

In the meantime I will tell him to get a job in the pub - that might work lol Free drink ha If I do hear of anything I will keep you posted They do have an exhibition in Abu Dhabi called IDEX but I believe it is not on till 2015 Good place to smooze and network

UAE military recruit through old boys network ( They get thousands of applicants) and now of many people leaving the services who are ex friends/colleagues I dealt with the principal recruiter 2 years ago and even though he was a fab guy he said he had applications coming out his ears from UK service personnel. Due to recommendation Primarily they have infantry Parachute regiment and Royal Military Police , Marines W02 and above however many were laid off last year Most of the lads I know, know each other from their service and that is how they found roles I know nothing about the airside of things though sorry Anti Piracy is badly paid and long trips away as the other guy said I wish him luck! :-) Need to be in a beer garden now with a cold shandy ha

As Sarahlou says it's pretty tough out here to find jobs for ex military. My friend's husband took 2 years to get something with a private security firm out here this was with him already having plenty of contacts. He spends 3-4 months at time in places such as Afghanistan or Iraq etc few days back then out again. They're going back to the UK next month as can't deal with the separation etc. I forgot to add that also. A few people I know are leaving CP in Iraq/Afghan as their rotas have changed to 3 months on, 6 weeks off and they too are missing family
