Dear Romana I'm so sorry to hear about how your friend is feeling and how she has been treated. Unfortunately I can only echo her story as i too suffer from hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) with severe vit B12, vit D and iron deficiencies etc. My advice based on my 10 years experience in Qatar looking for a decent endocrinologist (even saw head endo at Hamad among many many others) is to go elsewhere for treatment. I have left in tears from doctors offices with diagnosis such as 'being lazy', 'needs to have a baby to keep her busy' and 'homesick/ depressed' etc. Its a very difficult disease to treat because blood tests either arent done correctly or the range that is used in Qatar is not up to the latest international standards. I would book an appointment with Dr Amel El Tayeb in Dubai Healthcare City +971 43752344 and go and see him. Ask to be put on urgent waitlist as appointment times are very long and keep calling weekly to see if there is a cancellation. Also just a heads up he doesn't take any insurance and is quite expensive eg Dhs 750 for consultation so just be prepared. He has proved to be the best endo in the region for me, he listens, understands and explains everything. You need to do a lot of your own research too online and books and use your own gut and judgement to decide whats good for you and what isn't. This isnt a clear-cut disease unfortunately and medical science hasn't quite caught up to it. I hope this helps your friend. If she would like to discuss/ask more please leave an email and I'll get back to you. And please tell her this from one sufferer to another: No you are not going mad, its not all in your head, yes EVERYTHING you are feeling and experiencing is really a symptom of this horrible disease AND you can and will get better just hang on a little longer. All the best.

Hi Rups, For the baking supplies you are looking for you may have to visit Tavola, they stock Wilton brand(the one at Royal Plaza is better than the citycenter branch one - ask for stuff as they sometimes keep things at the back!). Google "Caramel Doha" and go and check them out. Jojo (Bernadine) is very friendly and helpful she stocks both Wilton and PME. They do baking and decorating classes and I believe they have also got a shop so she should be able to help you with everything especially gel food colours which are difficult to get due to regulations in Qatar. Finally check Lakeland, they are quite pricey but sometimes have items you may want and you can always ask them to order something from Dubai if you are desperate. Hope that helps:)

Hi there, I saw your earlier post asking about a secondhand sewing machine and I was meant to reply to you but totally forgot. I do have one for sale if you are still interested. It is a Singer Model 6416, hardly used, around 9 years old, still in original box with all bits and bobs - and I'm asking for QR 700. If you want to buy a brand new one, I would recommend the Singer shop (It is located down the street from 'Doha City', at the roundabout you can't miss it). If you do a search on this site you should get better directions! I have also seen some Singer and Brother sewing machines at Carrefour and Lulu supermarket, though they aren't very consistent. Let me know if you are interested in mine and otherwise best of luck in your search:)

Hi All, Does anyone know if Desert Diamond jewellery (18k Gold) have a resale value? I mean for the stones plus the gold value? I have a few pieces that I'd like to sell, but not sure where to take them as not all gold shops know what a desert diamond is! If anyone knows the best place to re-sell them, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanking you in advance:)

Hi Scaralex, Although I haven't taken landlord to RC, they took me (long story) so I have personal experience with dealing with RC. I can tell you: As helpful as the people at the rent committee are no one will give you a verifiable, 100% guaranteed answer until you file a case and go through the whole process and even then the verdict will really depend on who the 'judges' are at the table and the facts in your particular case. Although the RC is tenant friendly they are fair to both parties and what saved me was having documentation for every single little thing which helped prove my case. If I was you I would rent out my property and be prepared in case the previous tenant does decide to bring you to RC (which will cost them significantly) have proof of everything - your sale falling through and how many months the property remained vacant as well as how you provided tenants with the 12month notice etc. A show of goodwill/good faith goes a long way in these cases as well, so you can explain to the court your circumstances. Also, what do you know of the previous tenant? Are they still in Dubai? Did you have any issues when you asked them to move out? This will help you judge if they will be vindictive. It really is a shame when good landlords get horrible tenants and good tenants get horrible landlords!! I wish you all the best in what ever you decide to do.

Dear Mbads, First of all...Congratulations on your pregnancy! I do not have a personal recommendation for an OBY-GYN but can tell you to that you may have to shop around to find the right doctor for you. Many people visit doctors in Al Ahli Hospital and Doha Clinic so those may be a good point to start. Personally I only have positive feedback from using the Women's Hospital (Hamad) as they are the place I would want to be if there are complications BUT you do have extremely long and frustrating waiting times for everything from appointments to scans etc. There is the option of the private clinic in the evenings at Hamad if you find a doctor you like. Something else that you may want to look into is the government hospital in Al Wakra (a bit out of Doha) but it has a huge gynecology wing and is fairly new. Also keep in mind you may be limited to who your insurance provider covers. I hope that helps a little. Good luck:)

Hi Tiamona, For cooking purposes a gas hob and electric oven is the best combination (IMO), however what type of cooker you get really depends on where you live. There are rules in place in many apartment buildings and even some villas which state you can only have an electric cooker. In terms of cost I'm not sure the cost of gas but I do know with an electric cooker used for all cooking and weekly baking in a house with 7 people (fridges. multiple TVs, AC's etc) does not come to more than QR 500 per month. Hope that helps.

Dear Asrar, You are right to be concerned about salaries in the hospitality industry in Qatar. They are generally very low and the packages aren't great. Salary, benefits package and working conditions really depend on a few things: 1) The sponsor of the property and not so much on the hotel brand which is different from the western world. As in my experience, international hotel brands are only too happy to provide the absolute minimum requirements when doing business here e.g. 21 days annual leave, 6 day work week (9 or 10 hours/day), low quality housing and useless medical insurance. 2) Your position/grade 3) Your nationality (unfortunately) I would try and secure a salary that is at least 1.5 times your current one, full medical insuarance (for you and any dependents), company provided housing OR a minimum of QR 10,000 per month housing allowance (depending on your family situation), 30 days annual leave, 5 day work week, full school fees for your children as well as help in sponsoring spouse and family as this is often challenging for women. Transport allowance is also something you could ask for. If you are single and looking for a different experience/adventure and are not too concerned about saving money or having lots of free time then that is a different case. Also, Qatar has no service charge so depending on your position this is also a factor to consider. I hope this helps.

Please don't hold keys hostage, it is illegal and can result in you having to pay the LL up to a years rent. It happened to a friend and nearly to me. Try to make sure you hand over before or on the day your contract ends. It is not worth the hassle or cost. Get it all witnessed and in writing. Goodluck <em>edited by Savannah on 30/07/2013</em>

Hi! The most important jab for TZ is yellow fever as they will actually check for this at the airport (Outbreak in 2011).I would also get the tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the last 10 years as this is quite important. Did you get Hepatitis shots before? Please check know how 'safe' it is to have all the shots at once and before a strenuous climb? Also, I dont think there is a shot for rabies but I could be wrong. I would also get started on the anti-malarial - Malarone is the best on the market at the moment and needs to be started before you arrive and continued after you leave. You may also want to consider some altitude sickness medication as this is often a problem for some people. Lastly, make sure to pack some water purifying tablets to be on the safe side although you will have bottled mineral water, its just an insurance in case you have to use the tap/stream water! Enjoy Kili! Savannah P.S. Dress warmly, its coooold up there.

Hi ladies, I too am searching for a short-let for February and after searching on here for suggestions I went to a few places but prices have either shot up or I'm speaking to the wrong people. Gloria and its sister property across the road charge Dhs16,000 and Dhs11,500 per month respectively for a 1 bedroom apartment with a Dhs3,000 refundable deposit and 3 times a week cleaning. If anyone else has any more updated info please post and let us know. I'm planning to visit some more hotel apartments next week so I'll post on here as well.

Hello Spudz, Where exactly will you be moving to in TZ? Because location matters. Dar, Zanzibar, Arusha & Moshi all have International Schools (pyp, IGCSE and IB) and lots of expats as well. You can look up International School of Tanganiyika (in Dar), International School Moshi (Moshi and Arusha Campuses) on the net. Although not the capital city, Dar is the most easy to adjust to as its the biggest city and has all the "mod cons". Life can be very good if you have a good package that pays for a house in a good location, utilities, security, school fees and medical insurance that is international and covers airlifting to Kenya if necessary. I hope this helps:)

Hello All, I am looking for a bean-to-cup coffee machine and have no idea where I can find one in Dubai or what is a good brand. Its for DH's birthday and as he is coffee mad I thought this would be a good presesnt. It has to either be able to grind the coffee beans or at least use ground coffee and not the pod system as he usually gets coffee beans. At the moment he uses a cafetiere but would love to do espresso's and cappucinos. If you could point me in the right direction in terms of brands and locations its available in Dubai that would be great.\ Many thanks! :)

I buy my products directly from the ME distributor, a lady called Karin, you can contact her zero five zero four five three zero three nine eight. She also does proper Environ facials though unfortunately you would need to travel to Sharjah. Hope that helps.

@ mrswhippy... As far as I am aware, it is legal because it is one of the first things I questioned. I'm sure it is a grey area and can be interpreted differently on a case by case basis. What I'm banking on is the fact that I have an email (that was sent to me by mistake by MFRE due to their incompetance) informing LL of the renewal of their agreement for another year. Also LL's wife let it slip that she collected new checks from MFRE which indicates that there was a new agreement made. They know that I dont have a copy of the new agreement as I wasn't around when this all happened,so are using the old one against me.

Thanks Clairehdp, It's so strange for me to go to the police station with such problems, but I will do it even if its just to get a number to call when LL does try anything else. LL and wife are really good at this because believe me throughout this process they refer to me as 'dear' (uurghh!!!) and very nicely explained to me "dear, MFRE have run away but YOU are here so we can make you pay....." Eviction and threats are also given very politely: "dear, you have three options....." If it wasn't so stressful it would be funny!

LL gives MFRE authority to rent on his behalf, sign contract and collect cheques. This is for a year at a time though they are bound by same rules as tenancy contracts i.e. they have to renew for the 2nd year at the same rate etc MFRE then rents to tenant. Though the contract has the LL's name it also states that it is managed by MFRE, has MFRE stamp and signature of MFRE. In my case, my tenancy agreement period exceeds the period of the LL & MFRE agreement but as LL and MFRE both 'intended' to renew this doesn't matter. They are now using this 'expired' agreement to evict me.

Well, there was an ongoing issue with the AC in the apartment - (a leak in the pipes that they patched up using tape) which has now caused mold in the ceiling, No AC for a month at the beginning of summer, AC has a horrible sewer smell; broken balcony door handle etc When MFRE was around, LL's response was "deal directly with them don't interfere with our contract with MFRE!", because I was nice enough to tell him that he should put pressure on MFRE to fix the AC before it caused more damage to his apartment - which it did (they now have to replace the ceiling board, insulation and pipes when it was just a simple pipe replacement job to begin with). After MFRE disappeared, he has turned up physically and threatened eviction, he has tried to file cases against me - make sure I cant leave the country etc, he has put a maintenance ban on me (i.e. I cant get any workmen to come and fix anything in the apartment so that I am forced to live with problems or leave) and now the latest tried to get the tower management to evict me by saying I'm living in his apartment illegally. In addition to this, he wants to try and make sure we don't take anything out from his apartment which is fine - only the fridge, washer/drier, mattress, wardrobe, shelves etc are mine!!! It's a constant source of tension and stress and embarassment as the tower security and management get involved. I'm made to feel like a criminal. Is that miserable enough?:(

Hello All, I just wanted to know if anyone has any updated information regarding tenants of Marks Falcon. Has LL managed to get you to leave the house/apartment? I now have the LL trying to get the tower management to evict me, among other things they are doing. I can't register my tenancy contract with RERA as the title deed copy I have has a discrepancy (Tower number typo, 1 instead of 3). So I don't know where that leaves me legally. I haven't been to the police station to register a complaint as I really don't know who I am complaining against, LL , MFRE?? Its confusing! RERA's response (over the phone) was LL can't do anything to me as I have a valid tenancy contract. LL is trying as best as possible to make my life miserable, and it is working. Can't talk to LL directly as he says "we should talk less" and to be honest I don't want to compromise with him after the way he as treated me and also as 1) I dont have the money to pay the rent again 2) I'm leaving Dubai as soon as my course finishes which is the same time as the rental agreement ends (less than 4 months). Just wanted to hear from anyone else in a similar situation. Thanks.

Hi Fairycakeyumm & elk1973! For African food/snacks you can try maandazi (similar to doughnuts) check this recipe out: http://bronxkigoma.blogspot.com/2010/12/simple-tanzanian-mandazi-recipe.html. Just use canned coconut milk instead of fresh, I prefer Eastern brand. Tips: - Allow dough enough time to rise and double up before rolling out. - When deep frying, make sure maandazi's have enough room in the pan and keep spooning oil over them so that they puff up properly! - cut them in any shape doesn't have to be round. Alternatively, you can make banana fritters if you want something fruity or even grilled or boiled corn on the cob. I hope this helps!

Hi Pinks, Thank you so much for reply, it has helped calm me down somewhat and so sorry to hear about your situation. I sincerely hope that the law intervenes and makes changes that protect LL's and tenants and punishes these agents, it seems they can do no wrong! After talking with a nice lady at RERA, the unanimous verdict is do nothing until the the LL does something. I am going to get registered with RERA and going to get the locks changed and I am informing security to be aware in case LL tries to access flat in my absence. Under normal circumstances I would feel for the LL as they have been scammed but the way this one is treating us makes me not want to have anything to do with him. I just want to see my contract out peacefully, I understand that I have to pay for all maintenance myself till then and that I will not be seeing my deposit again but the uncertainty of the situation is so stressful. Wishing everyone success in their battle and hope something good comes out from all this.

Hello again, To answer a few questions: I'm not in Dubai at the moment so can not go to RERA, I arrive over the weekend. I can not get the locks changed as I per the tower rules I need the landlords permission (and they have special locks that need to be ordered and take 3 weeks to arrive). The PMC are Marks Falcon Real Estate which declared bankruptcy on 1st of September 2012. I'm even more worried now. @ Malawi 70 - can you please share any details regarding the tenants rights in such a case? Thank you

Hi Loukoum, That incident was last trimester and no he didn't let me do all the make-up quizzes then. But as they were about 6% of the total grade, I just concentrated on doing the best in the other components. I did want to start a grievance procedure but the counselor talked me out of it. She has since then resigned as she had to go back home to look after her sick mum. I'm now in a new trimester and the problems have begun all over this time despite me not having any direct contact with him. The university decided to change the timing of one of my courses without informing me, therefore I had a clash (and the workload is too much to take on as these particular courses run only for a month at a time.) I hadn't realised this until 2 classes had passed. When I went to the registrar to drop that course and pick up another for June, imagine my surprise that I had already been withdrawn from the course with a failed grade! This means I lose the money for the course as well as halve my GPA (3.96 + 0 /2). When I asked the registrar why they had done that, the response was the course tutor (him) had instructed them to do it and only he can remove this. This is not the normal procedure for this, you get warnings if you miss a certain number of classes etc and I had a schedule clash, I physically can not be in two places at once. I am now waiting for him to reverse the grade, no time frame or commitment and as he is assistant dean his decisions normally stay. Everyone including members of staff fear him. I just feel worn out with these constant issues, I just want to get on with my education and graduate but because I have challenged him in the past, he simply can't let that go. I have not spoken to him directly after the first 3 times, when I had issues with him, it has been email only since then.

Thank you for the responses so far, to answer some of your questions: The university in question is private, a speciality university and not a campus of an International university. It is not large approximately 300 students. The main problem is that the professor in question is also the Assistant Dean and therefore the first person you actually would go to in order to lodge a complaint! When I first had a problem, I spoke with him directly i.e. set an appointment and it only made the situation worse (he didn't even have the courtesy to let me have a seat when in his office). He can call you stupid, ridiculous, rubbish etc which I don't think is appropriate. I then went to the Dean, who just made excuses for him e.g.I'm sure he was having a bad day (at 9am in the morning) and he is under a lot of stress because he is working very hard (!?!) He (Dean) then went and told him I complained about his behaviour which has now made me the target of the year. I have since then had worse problems when I had to take time out (3 weeks) because I had a really bad chest infection and was in hospital, when I returned I went to talk to him about catching up with missed quizzes to which his response was "that is your problem" and when I said I have been off sick and have a doctors note etc, he said "what do you want me to do about it?, what do you want me to say to you (to get you to leave)." University policy states that if you have a valid reason you can re-do tests. The university doesn't have a dedicated student councellor, but I did go and speak with the person who acts like one so that I could begin a grievance procedure as the situation had escalated further and fellow students even began asking what was wrong. Her advice was to wait till the end of the semester, see if I still feel as strongly about the situation. Which was good advice up to a point as it helps to deal with things clear-headed but when I met up with her at the end the advice was now that you're done with him teaching you, do I really want to go through this? It is my decision but I've only got a year left and won't be in any more classes with him so it is worth it? I was tired and just wanted to go home at that point and unfortunately the 'counsellor' left as well. I thought I was free of him and then it turns out that a course I signed up for that was supposed to be taught by a different tutor is now being taught by him, so essentially I am back to square one. He is physically intimidating as he is huge over 6'4", built like a wrestler. He also admits to enjoy embarrassing/humiliating people (he finds it very entertaining), is not happy when students know the answers to questions (will say things like s/he is repeating the course and go on to ask other random questions just so that he can assert his superiority). Everyone is scared of him and don't question or challenge any of his behaviour (he recently called a female student to his office to give her a warning regarding uniform - she was wearing trousers and a jacket which is acceptable. When she asked what the problem with the outfit was, he said let me look at you, just sat there and stared for a few minutes, then asked her to turn around looked some more, turn again looked some more and then said something about her trousers not being right and gave her a written warning. Poor girl left in tears.) So as you can see, I am really tired with all this constant conflict which is so stressful for me and takes away from my studies. His new mission in life is to get to me is to drop my 3.96 GPA which he has realised is the only way to get to me, as I have challenged everything he tries to do to me using the university policies and procedures and I am not scared of him as he may have authority but he just another human being and not a demi-god as he thinks he is. I want an independant person to come in and review his behaviour and conduct, as the university obviously can not be objective and he is the assistant dean. I have had a look at the KHDA website but can not find where I could make such a complaint. Basically, I am looking for a RERA version in education. Apologies for the length of the message and thanks to all for reading the post.

Dear Zimbomum, I've been following your story since you posted about your lost Max. I totally get the devastation you must feel as I too know how it is to lose an African Grey Parrot. My Dad has had them since before I was born so I've grown up with them and we too have a Max (I told my parents to tell our Max his cousin Max was lost!). One of ours died after being with us for 20 years we still talk about her almost daily as she was super special. At the time I was so distressed that I told my mum, thats it, I cant do this anymore its too painful, I'm never keeping another pet! We have since then rescued another baby African Grey who was stolen from the wild and had a traumatic experience where both her feet were broken and her eye scratched. She is not a replacement but she does make the loss bearable and brings us joy in new ways everyday. The reason I am telling you this is, if you love African Grey's as much as I think you do, please dont give away the new guy/girl, unless ofcourse the owners are found! You know he/she has already become a part of the family and just imagine when your Max is back the fun the two of them will have together! If you still feel you can't look after this new baby then I would love to meet him/her and see if it will adopt me! I wish you all the best in finding your Max. Warm regards, Sav.

Hello Jonners, Just to reiterate what the others have said regarding visas, its available on arrival for most nationalities and is US$50. It's better to take US$ rather than GBP as they have a better exchange rate and are more 'wanted'. Make sure you have the correct amount as getting change can be an issue. Also no US$ notes pre-2006. On the jabs front, East Africa has had an outbreak of yellow fever so it is very important that you get this shot before you go, as when I was there last in March this year, they had a check-point at the airports. If you didnt have a certificate you had to get the jab at the airport and pay lots for it. Good news is that its for 10years so you won't have to go through it again for a long time! Also, Malerone seems to be the drug of choice for malaria at the moment, but as others have mentioned use what you are most comfortable with. Enjoy your holiday:)

Hello All, I've been invited for lunch on Friday by my friend who is local, its only going to be women and children and very informal and I offered to bring dessert. So lets hear some suggestions. I can not make anything myself as I don't have the time/energy/equipment etc. Im partial to chocolate profiteroles, Banoffee pie, good trifle but where would i be able to get THE BEST of these please? or any reccomendations for something yummy and who makes it best are much appreciated. TIA Sav <em>edited by Savannah on 24/03/2011</em>

@CCdoha- apologies for bringing up an 'old' post but I just had to let you know, please look carefully into Stenden before you decide, there is a reason why they are always looking for teachers. It is not a plesant place for students or teachers, each to their own I suppose but I just wish someone had warned me as I wasted 1 year of my life there (I was a student) and it was truly depressing and totally unmotivating. I wish you success in your search, if you dont mind travelling a bit have a look into the QP school in Mesaeed. Please take this post in the spirit it is intended, helpful, as this is just my opinion. Goodluck :)
