I had the same, and on top of that my hair suddenly became very very dry and brittle, unfortunately made more noticeable by my curly moptop :( I switched from using my usual Loreal/Herbal Essences stuff to using all natural shampoos and conditioners from Lush and honestly...I saw the quickest turnaround ever. I still can't believe how quickly my hair recovered! I think initially I used the shampoos and conditioners with heavy moisturising properties, and once I felt like my hair was no longer dry, I switched to volumising and thickening shampoo/conditioner combos. The ladies in the shop were so helpful, and rather than basically shoving products down my throat like most places, it really felt that they were trying to find the best option for me. It was obviously more expensive but worth it. Now i keep a couple of pots on hand and use my normal Dove shampoos and conditioners, and switch to Lush if my hair needs a bit of TLC. Would highly recommend trying their stuff.

Surprisingly, although my other half is an only child, my mother in law and I have a wonderful relationship. It's the Stepfather in Law who is the real issue for me. At the moment we're living with them and this is putting a bit of a strain on things. I'm still having no real issues with my MIL but the issues we have with the SFIL are making things difficult! He doesn't have any children of his own so doesn't really understand boundaries at all. He only became a Stepfather when my husband was in his 20's so there is no real bond there. I have no qualms in admitting to hubs that I despise the man, and he is beginning to feel much the same! Unfortunately MIL is somewhat blind to all of this and my biggest fear is that our good relationship will be affected. Continuously biting my tongue at the minute so hopefully moving into our own apartment in the next month will ease things.

Don't believe they're legal but I think it's clear that most look the other way! Ecstasy is especially huge over there it seems. Legal Highs are also a huge thing there at the minute, although how some of them still remain legal is beyond me.

My younger sister in the UK who is coming up to 19 is ecstatic about this plan, and is arranging to come out with all her mates when it's finished. I've urged them not to get their hopes up! I can see why they're doing it; despite the obvious pitfalls of places like Ibiza, Malia and Magaluf, the yearly summer jaunts to the towns must bring in huge profits. The club scene in Dubai is huge, and although 40mins/2 emirates away, the island would probably attract huge clubs such as Pacha to set up there. I'd be hugely surprised if this managed to get off the ground. As mentioned, Ibiza doesn't exactly have the most glamorous reputation. The only upside is the distance from Dubai...although for those closer to the action perhaps this is of little comfort!

Hi Sandstorm, I believe Mirdif would be a good area for you to look at. Perfect for your husband's commute to EGHQ, and there are several good schools nearby; such as GEMS Royal Dubai (British curriculum). Also not too far from Repton school, although this may be a stretch on busy mornings. I know a lot of Emirates staff live in Arabian Ranches and love it, although slightly further out for your husband's commute. Al Barsha is also quite popular! Hope this helps.

If you have long hair I always think a high bun looks gorgeous, especially when using a hair doughnut/sock bun! It's so quick and easy to do and with the right technique it can look really gorgeous. My hair isn't that long but is naturally curly and can get quite (VERY  ) frizzy in windy or humid weather, and I always get compliments after shoving it up into one of these buns within five minutes in the morning! I just put my pony-tailed hair through the middle, backcomb slightly to give the hair some structure, then take pieces and wrap them round the bun, pinning underneath wherever I see fit. If you're really frustrated, you can just put a bun over your ponytail, bring the hair through the middle, spread it over the bun and use another hair-tie to secure the hair. Pull on the hair in the bun a little to 'boof' it up, and there you have it! Plus...the sand might actually help hold the structure of the bun

The 2nd season of Broadchurch started too, I watched the 1st episode and it looks like a corker of a series I watched it last night, was brilliant! It might even beat the last series.

Thank you so much for all your replies, I can't tell you how helpful they've been! I think we've definitely been put off the idea of RAK, because although we'd like to insist that it's 'sensible'...we are in our 20s and are only planning on staying here for 5-6 years before going home and having kids, so would much rather pay a little more and save less so we can be in the city and actually enjoying our lives. Collectively we're earning about 20,000dhs a month, and in March my salary is increasing so we'll be on around 22,000. Commentator2012 breaking down 60000 a year was really helpful, and even at 65000 a year we can afford a relatively nice 1-bed apartment in all the areas you've mentioned, along with dewa, food expenses and the payments on a small-ish second hand car. (We work so close to each other so wouldn't ever need 2.) We're hoping that while we're here, our salaries will increase slightly so things will get a little bit more comfortable and we can go back to the UK with amazing experience on our CVs, which to me is more important than savings at the moment. Thank you so much for all your help - you've really put my mind at ease. Any more advice about anything would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the replies so far... If it is impossible, is there anywhere within Dubai or closer that you would recommend? I mean we're trying to look at under 40,000 a year which I know is a real stretch for somewhere half-decent.

Hello everyone - my first post! How exciting. I've been in Dubai for about six months now with my DH. We are both working, living with my in-laws, and basically here to save as much as possible over the next five or so years. It's become obvious to us that it's not as easy to 'save' as my in-laws insisted it was, especially on our combined salary. I'm 22 and have just started my career, and my DH is 27 and although he is on a slightly higher salary, it's not high enough for us to be able to comfortably live alone in Dubai AND save. Compared to the UK, we're pretty happy with our first proper combined salary, and the experience we will gain with the companies we work for will be invaluable in itself when we head back to the UK. However...we would really like to try and save something! We've been looking into living in Ras Al Khaimah on the advice of a few colleagues, as International City is just...not what we're looking for at all. We've found a couple of reasonable and nice-looking studio apartments online, but our main concern at the moment is the commute. We start work at 7 so are used to getting up early at the moment - what would the traffic be like coming from RAK to Garhoud area before from 5.30-6.30am, and heading back the other way after 3.30pm? Any other advice on living in RAK (or the idea of it anyway) would be much appreciated. Living with my in-laws permanently is NOT an option. I love them but it's becoming a little trying...and we really need some more space!
