The only thing I really hate is the driving. It makes going anywhere a real mission, and I worry so much about a serious accident involving my kids. There is plenty to do, especially if you are on a good package with money to spend, but the driving makes me think twice about going anywhere. I don't find the heat a problem at all. Everywhere is air conditioned so you are hardly exposed to it. I get so cold inside with all the A/C I usually find it a relief to come out into the warmth!

I am new to Doha, also from Scotland. My girls are starting in Y4 and Y6 at DBS in September.

Well I'm delighted to say our dilemma is solved as both girls have now been offered a place at DBS. I'd just like to say to those of you trying to get kids into schools... It all seems so daunting, but places are obviously not quite as short as people make out, judging by the fact my older daughter was offered a place at 3 different schools. I think part of the problem is that everyone has to hedge their bets, applying to several schools, which causes long waiting lists at all the schools. As places are taken up, spaces open up on other waiting lists as people had their names down at three or more schools.

I have two daughters, age 8 and 10. My elder daughter has been offered a place at DC West Bay, and at Sherborne. My younger daughter has passed the assessment to Sherborne, but they don't have room for her yet. She hasn't done an assessment to DC yet, as it was a written test, and we were still in Scotland at the time. We are staying in Holiday Villa on C-Ring road, but have applied to move to Ain Khalid (may or may not get to move though). So which school do we accept... DC West Bay, or Sherborne? We have to decide by next week. If we choose DC, who knows whether my younger daughter will get into the same school, and even if she does, my older daughter will only be there for a year, and will then need to move to high school. If we choose Sherborne, hopefully it is just a matter of time before younger daughter gets in too, but it is very far from Holiday Villa and Ain Khalid. Is Sherborne as good as DC?

Catonclan - I guess I know deep down you are right, and it would be more sensible to come towards end of August. It's just sooooo long to wait!! The weather here is not helping either - I hate the cold with a passion!

I think realistically more likely to get there at the beginning of summer, but may come for a brief visit around Easter as I have never been there myself yet! I really appreciate the help and support from you lovely ladies. :)

We were kind of thinking we should relocate in summer too, but I am worried about landing there in the height of the heat! Schools wise we have so far applied to DESS (they said they may have space for my older DD but not the younger one), Doha British School, Park House, and put them down for DC in Sept 2014. I am still wanting to apply at one or two more, but not sure which ones to go for. Compass is rather out of our budget, Sherborne I am worried about the distance. Loydence seem to only go up to year 4.

I'm, from Aberdeenshire, but was born in Zimbabwe. :) I'm hoping to get there by Easter, but my DH seems to think I should wait till end of summer! :O I want to come now! I hate living in limbo!

Watching this thread with interest as I am also very horsey. My DH is getting frustrated with me because I am more concerned about being close to riding centres than schools! ;)

Thanks JA Girl. Are you with QA too? I think we will also probably apply to move to Ain Khalid as soon as we can, partly also to be nearer to schools rather than in the city centre. However we have not got the girls into a school yet anyway! I look forward to meeting you and your boys. They may still get along with my daughters, as they are very similar in age. :)

mrsw2 - thank you so much for your kind reply. I would love to hear more about Loydence as we have now come up with a 'game plan'. We have decided to apply to Doha British School, DESS, Parkhouse and Loydence (in order of preference). DC told me they won't have places this year, but I have put applications in for Sept 2014 there, just so that we may have that as an option if we want it when the time comes.

Thanks Kimmc - I think I will try DESS after all. You never know, at least we do have British passports.

~thanks again for your input - I can't tell you how appreciated it is! kimmc - I will definitely try Sherborne I think, thanks. I have already purchased the application forms for Doha College, so will apply anyway. My older daughter is very bright, so she may have a good chance. Unfortunately my younger daughter is taking her time about getting to grips with reading and subsequently writing. We are working on it, but I don't see her topping anyone's waiting list! chocfish - we are British passport holders, so perhaps may be worth considering DESS. however my older daughter is 10 so it wouldn't be that long before we were looking for a secondary school for her. The ones currently on my list are... Parkouse Loydence Compass Doha British School Sherborne Doha College QIS I have emailed them, so far Parkhouse and Doha College are the only ones who replied. (I'll start phoning this week) Parkhouse said maybe in September if we apply now, which we will, I think this may be my first choice. Doha College said there would only be a space if people leave.

Thank you so much for your helpful replies. Kimmc3 - I noticed on reading through older posts that Sherbourne had a huge problem with kids having to be home schooled due to their over booking themselves. Is this all sorted now?

When you say you applied by email, did you just enquire, or did you submit actual applications? Most of them are QR500 per application, and we have two kids!

Hi Julie, thanks so much for your reply. I have been looking at all the schools, and had put Compass as a potential. the problem with Compass is it may be beyond our budget. :(

Hi there - just saw this and thought I should say hi - I'm also from Aberdeenshire! My hubby is starting work in Doha beginning of Feb (2013) and we will follow as soon as we can. I'm in the process of trying to organise schools - what a nightmare! How do you go about it? Do you just apply to them all (not that we could afford to) or pick one you like and hope to get in?
