The border was closed at Hatta last time we travelled that way but don't know current situation as that was over a month ago. You can travel through Al Ain but it is a much longer route.:)

Many congratulations on the arrival of your little baby boy. :balloon: Many nurseries here take little babies from 4 months and some even earlier. It all depends on the particular nursery. Not like the UK where most of them like to have little ones toilet trained. Hope that helps and good luck. xxxxx:cool:

Many many children just clam up in such situations and many schools allow for that. If it's any consolation once your little girl starts school and she gets into the daily routine of seeing her little classmates every day she will start to open up. I have seen it happen to lots of children and after a few months you will wonder why you worried. Just a suggestion but why not try a summer camp just for a few hours a day. Just to see how she gets on with the other children. There are even some advertised on the EW site. They are more fun orientated so might break her in to the social scene a bit gentler too. I wish you lots of luck. xxx bye:

Why not just get her some comfy tshirts and trousers. Does she really have to wear a uniform?

I realise how blessed I am being from the UK where schools are free. You have freedom of speech. Tenants have more rights. Workers have more rights. Having a letter box is awesome. But mainly that everyone should be treated equally no matter of race or colour.

You could also try ASOS. Plus its handy when you can see them on the 'catwalk' before buying so you have a better idea of what they might look like on too. http://www.asos.com/search/maternity?hrd=1&q=maternity&SearchSuggestUsed=true

I would have loved to have seen your post a couple of months ago. In January I had major surgery on my spine. DH was with me as much as possible. He works away and he tried everything to get me some kind of home help so that I would have a little company/help during my daily walks during the first weeks at home. Even through insurance there was nothing available. In the end my husband had to pay for flights for one of our daughters to stay for a week. Luckily her work can be done online. Not everyone is so lucky. It would have been so nice to have had someone just pop in for the company during a daily walk and a chat without having to call on people abroad. I was very lucky and thankfully tons better now, but not everyone has people to fall back on. I do think that such a volunteer service would be amazing and very welcomed for those coming out of hospitals. Probably not that easy to arrange over here but it's a service I would have grabbed with open arms and sure many others would too. Might be worth looking into.

Hello, my husband's celebrates his 60th birthday in August and is not able to return to the UK to celebrate. I will be coming out to see him so am wondering if you can give me any ideas on really special hotels to spend the night ? He lives on the Palm so Atlantis etc is out. We have not ventured out of Dubai yet so maybe somewhere not too far away would be fine. TIA There is a new Anantara due to open at the top of Jabal Al Akhdar in Oman. Looks amazing and will be much cooler weather during August, at the top of that mountain. Just another option. xx http://www.anantara.com/al-jabal-al-akhdar/

My heart goes out to you. I know it's not much consilation but I had miscarriages, abortion and ectopic pregnancies, and I am sure there are many ladies, such as yourself, been through similar and worse. But I just want you to know that I nearly gave up and it is soul destroying. But I am living proof that you will get through this, you'll be a stronger person and a wonderful mother. This woman sounds dreadful. Believe me she is in the minority. They can teach students all the medical knowledge there is, but sadly being a decent human being isn't one of them. Lots of love. xxx

I think the mobile app is cheaper than the actual print book. Worth checking it out! Yes the app is cheaper than the book. The book is good if you want to share or swap vouchers with friends. You can also share vouchers via the app but the people you share with must have wifi when using it and also your email etc to use them. The app also will give you a current balance of your vouchers and even give you updated deals too. xxx

I can recommend Beauty Within in Dubai Marina. They have two hairdressers with a Finnish hairdresser degree (that is three years in college). They are very good with blonde hair and highlights and are Goldwell qualified. I find Goldwell is the best colour for blonde especially. I've been going there for over a year now and they fixed my butchered hair done by somebody that clearly wasn't properly qualified. Having highlights done there has taking several hours but at least it's done properly and not just a few foils. I have a long hair and lots of it but they take their time to do it well. Full head of highlights really means a full head there. Thank you N0rdque Wow I'm getting some great recommendations thank you so very much. xx

Ok we are all aware of the hair disasters that happen to nearly every woman that visits a salon here. It doesn't matter what you pay, where you go or the popular name they are working under. They seem to be everywhere and OMG why do I always find them? Why on earth is it so very hard for a, so called ,'experienced' or 'qualified' hairdresser to do a whole head of highlights/lowlights? Do they think we are so stupid in thinking that by just putting 15 foils in a thick head of hair even though we requested a full head that we will be so happy that we'll run back for a repeat visit? I am absolutely sick to death of wasting hard earned money on these untrained so called professionals that are taking money and playing at being hairdressers with peoples hair. All I need is a 'full' head of proffessionally coloured highlights and a really good cut and blow dry from a 'qualified and experienced hairdresser'.:angry::angry: I hiiiiighly recommend Louise at Hairworks, Ibn Battuta, she's absolutely fantastic and always manages to achieve the look and style I want... I'm a little indecisive with my hair too You'll be maybe looking at 500/600 dhs + but totally worth it, even if you just need that one time to just get started and then you can worry about it again in a few months or so Thanks Haim. Very handy to have a few good recommendations seen as people come and go often here. xxx

Hi Sarahlou123, At one hairdresser the lady rinsing dye off my hair called the hairdresser over as she noticed something wrong with the colour. After seeing it I was offered a repeat visit to see another stylist to try and repair the mess. But to be honest since then anywhere I go and I'm not happy I can't see the point so just never return. So would you recommend your salon? My best friend does mine and not in a salon ( If you catch my drift) ;-) Does she need another best friend? I am sure she would however if she did it and you didn't like it I would be mortified for recommending her  Lets be honest if you can be so happy for all these years it's worth a risk. Better to be recommended someone. You could ask her as I don't want to pressurise you or her.

why not specifically request for them to use the 'cap' method instead of the 'foil' method... though it does also depend on your length of hair... the cap method is most preferred for shorter lengths alternatively why not try the balyage method... colour sweeping as they call it... more natural! Hi HorizonMum2 Unfortunately my hair is too long for the cap. Gosh that takes me back. ha ha. Balyage is nice but sorry I really dont like 'growing out look'. Please don't get me wrong It does suit many ladies but i'm a little old for that look I think. But thank you for the thoughts. It's really the blond colour and amount of foils I am more concerned with. Thank you so much for the ideas though. xxx :)

The procedure in this country is that the nurse follows you to the cashier to make sure that you pay. If the nurse doesn't follow you, then that means you owe nothing. It seems that you went to pay which probably confused the cashier. Next time, if there is no nurse watching you, just leave. They know who should pay and who shouldn't. The procedure at the hospital I have been going to is that you go to the counter, that is relevant to your department, when you arrive. The receptionist at the desk then takes your information and takes your insurance card and then requests the 50 aed BEFORE seeing the doctor. So usually the nurse is no where to be seen at this point. So your system appears to be different to mine.

I used to have to pay a co-pay. The amount was written on the card. Next to that was something along the lines of "No charge for follow-up within 10 days". Is that not written on your card? Hi AnonDubai, No, there is no mention of no charge for follow-up at all. But surely it should have sent alarm bells ringing if he wasn't supposed to take money?

We all know that every time you go and see a doctor or specialist in the hospital and you are covered by insurance, most patients pay an excess fee. Such as 50 AED and the insurance pay the rest. I recently had an operation which I am recovering from but every now and then I have to go back to the hospital for checkups, X-rays etc so they can see how my recovery is coming along. My last visit I went to the desk to inform them I was there for my appointment. As usual the receptionist asked for my insurance card and then he requested the 50 Aed off me. At this point the nurse came out and immediately stopped the receptionist from taking my money. She said 'no, it is follow up from an operation'. The receptionist then gave me my 50 aed back. If the nurse hadn't stopped him I would have paid and they would also have claimed the rest off my insurance. So my question is how do you find out if they are right in taking money and when are they not supposed to? Yes I know it might be only 50 aed to me but surely the insurance companies are getting ripped off too? I have to go back again for another follow up appointment, as requested, so are they in their rights to take more money or not? How do you find out? I called the accounts dept in the hospital and their response was you should get charged for every visit. So who is right?

Hi all I'm being induced at 38 weeks due to medical necessity. I'm very scared.Hate the idea that my body might not be ready and will need a c section after hrs of painful labour.it's my first child. Please can people share positive experiences where induction has worked at 38 weeks. Also I'm very scared of being hooked up to machines and drips and am scared of not having the freedom to move around.when u r induced can wireless forms of monitoring equipment be used? Lastly. .I know I'm going to need epidural.I want it for pain relief but again am very frightened of the feeling of being paralysed and stuck to my bed.is it like paralysis or can u still move ur legs? Hi chichpokil, I was induced with both our girls. Believe me, I am the 'biggest' coward with hospitals, needles, pain etc etc. Everyone will have their own pain threshold but mine is lousy. After being induced I just had to walk round the hospital as normal and the best way I can describe it is just like a sharp period pain that just comes and goes. Unfortunately I never had an epidural so I am unable to comment on that but I do know that many women have had it for every birth and swear by it. Just me fearing needles was my excuse. ha ha. The trouble is there is so much to take in and you can get scared by all the information thrown at you. Please don't worry, you will be fine and such a prize to show off at the end of it all too ! All I can say is if I can do it then you can. I would go through it again in a heart beat. Good luck. xxxx :heart::heart:

It's worth noting though, that even if you get a license here, it does NOT cover you for the UAE. A license is only valid for the Emirate in which it is issued. Exactly FairyDust. Another indirect tax we are getting given.

I made the mistake of buying rotisserie chickens from Spinneys for 3 years until my husband looked at me likee I was a bit of a looney and took me to Al Reef Lebanese Bakery to buy a proper rotifer cook. Those Spinneys ones are absurdly tiny... More like sparrows. Maybe we should insist on turkeys and then we might just get a decent size chicken.

I have a one bed and live alone and my district cooling is paid. In the Winter my bill is around AED450 and the Summer AED500. I would expect two of you to pay more just make sure that your district cooling is paid for by the LL as that lowers the bill DEWA bill will include your housing fee which is 5% of your annual rent paid monthly so in theory my DEWA bill without this is only AED150 a month :-) Hi sarahlou123. Am I missing something here? I have been paying all my A/C bills to date. As far as I am aware the landlord pays no part of this. Now you have me baffled. Am i totally stupid? I thought district cooling was your bill.

It depends obviously on usage. We have a 2 bed, but no maids. Our costs vary from 750AED per month during the summer months and about 360AED during the winter months. There has been no need for us to use the heating though during the winter months. But some might. We come under the same supplier, 'Palm District Cooling' district in JLT . Whether we use the facility or not you still get a monthly capacity charge, around 250AED. One of the downsides of living in the area I'm afraid. During the summer some people here prefer to sleep or have the a/c on constantly, but we don't. So as with most things, prices will vary. I'm just giving you a rough estimate. But it may help to get more info by looking at 'Palm District Cooling'. For some reason I am unable to access their main site link at the moment, ?? Nevertheless this link has a few pages on the top once opened which might be able to give you more info. https://epay.palmutilities.ae

In JLT there is an online 'Community Wall' where residents sometimes advertise such things like parking spaces that they wish to rent. I am not sure if you are able to access this site unless you are a tenant or if you know someone that could put up such a post for you. Only a suggestion but it might be worth a try to ask building management and they may be able to help.

Whilst it is nice for once to see a landlord not increasing the rent, I certainly agree that 4 cheques is not unreasonable to ask though. I wish that we actually had a monthly payment system like many other countries. After all, as I have said before, who gets paid 6 months to a year in advance to pay for this? If you are otherwise happy with your tenants then why not let them pay in 4 cheques?

I'm so sad today :( It's my birthday this coming weekend and I'd been planning a brunch with some "friends" on Friday and this morning when I called to confirm one of them said they couldn't find a babysitter and the other said they had a wedding to attend - this despite us taking about it over 4 weeks ago and confirming it. So instead I'm all alone on my birthday with no one to go out with. They keep letting me down for various reasons. I agree Dubai is expensive and therefore sometimes its not possible to go to certain events because tickets are expensive, especially if they're not earning much. But even for dinner they're either too busy. I wasted 4 days last week because we were meant to go to the 7s but a day before they decided they didn't want to. It just feels like I'm always making the effort but no one returns it, which makes me think maybe I'm just not a nice person! Just so sad as I really want to enjoy things in Dubai but it feels like the people I thought were my good friends really aren't. Just very sad and lonely today. Hi Bob2015, I have felt the same here. I am sure you will be feeling bad. I don't know how you would think about meeting a stranger on your birthday but I can celebrate with you. I feel same loneliness and became friends with even my hairdresser here ? Now how lovely is that of you expatblogger25. Such a kind gesture too. I think you should try and make the effort Bob2015. The company might be nice for the both of you. There certainly doesn't have to be anything in it just nice company for two lonely people. You never know you might have a great afternoon /evening. Sometimes just going out for a coffee and a chat can really break the monotony of just working. It was brave of you Bob2015 to pluck up the courage to vent your frustrations but also so nice for expatblogger25 to offer as they are also a little lonely. I take my hat off to the both of you. Good luck and lots of happiness. xxxx

Does anyone know how much it costs to send a Christmas card in an envelope to other parts of the world? Equally a regular card with no envelope? I have tons of leftover stamps from years ago and want to use them up Many thanks... Not sure if it's much help but if you go to Hallmark in the Marina Mall they will weigh your cards and tell you how much each one is. You can write the amount on each envelope and add your stamps, as they differ for each size, put on your stamps and then post them in the post box round the corner of there by the lifts. If you need more stamps they also sell them too. Not sure if the Hallmark in the MOE also do that though. Good luck. xx

Hi ladies. I am about to leave Doha for good. Whilst here I decided to go for that long overdue facelift which would be well away from home in UK. I asked friends if anyone could advise any decent surgeon here in Doha but funnily enough I realized it can be quite a taboo subject. Some would just say " let me know how you get on as I might be interested also "or if some already had it done then they didn't own up so here I am about to say to others like myself in that "good candidate" stage of over 50 to go for it. I had the full works in April and I feel fantastic. There is no such op nowadays that has you looking like cat woman any longer. The latest procedure only has you looking "refreshed" and hopefully a few years younger without it showing too much to others, only you. The benefits of having the op here are where any bruising/bandaging for the next two weeks are bearable. You can go home for a visit looking great but not obvious. Job done. All I can say is you're very brave. Good luck to you. I would love a facelift but DH said ' you certainly don't need a facelift, you're lovely as you are'. Mmmmm, i'm not sure if It's the fact that he has been 'trained' well, or the fact that he realises how much money it would cost him if I did.:lol::lol:

It certainly is an mix of an "I don't care" and "I'll throw rubbish anywhere, somebody else will pick it up" attitude. If it was up to me I would put up posters in all buildings. The posters would include pictures of recent fires. Not sure even that would help.... :-/ They put pictures up in all the lifts as well as on the notice board in reception yet it still is falling on deaf ears.

Despite all the warnings in our building and occurrences in Dubai why on earth do we have to keep telling people? I was sat on my balcony only to see a 'lit' cigarette come flying down from above. Lazy, Dangerous,Idiotic, Stupid, Inconsiderate animals ! You can afford the annual rent, you can afford to smoke, you can afford to risk yours and everyone else lives in the building and you can obviously afford to go to a hotel when your apartment goes up in flames but you can't afford an ashtray.

Hi, Can anyone recommend a Guitar tutor for an 8 year old child who is a beginner on the Ukulele? Thanks in advance. Not sure if this might help but there is a music shop in the Meadows shopping centre and I know they have a variety of music lessons. Also in JLT there is a music shop, sorry not sure of the name but somewhere close to the Movenpick, these two places may have contacts or even point you in the right direction. Good Luck xx

There are loads of Landlords who will accept multiple cheques, you just have to ask. I would not pay in 1 cheque as the landlord then has no interest in fixing anything and if you need to move out early, you would risk losing all your money (apart front the 2 month penalty, which you would lose anyway). For those who are having issues with their Landlord, please do seek help from RERA. This is the most regulated real estate market in the world, and the most pro-tenant. The laws exist to help you - please use them. Yes but by paying in one cheque you pay less. So a monthly system would be way better. They seriously need to totally do away with the Annual cheque system the only person it benefits is the landlord. Yes there are laws in place to protect the tenant through the rental committee but it is designed in such a way that the tenant still loses out rather than the landlord. Your point also about the landlord having no interest in fixing anything if you pay in one cheque. They don't even if you pay in multiple cheques. The tenant usually has to foot the bill of costs up to the first 500 or even 1000 AED. Properties are getting old and deteriorating and majority of tenants foot the cost of most repairs. The rental system is totally outdated with the rest of the world.

For that exact reason, my husband and I ended up getting our apartment in Ajman even though my husbands job is in Dubai. We pay 28,000aed a year with 4 cheques for a one bedroom apartment that comes with parking and 24 hour security. It does have its toll, an hour drive to and from work and our weekends do tend to be spent at home if we not driving to Dubai. I wouldn't recommend it for families, but i would for a young couple or singles that don't mind the drives and want to save up. Good for you snow22. Such a shame that you and others have had to resort to such measures though. It does make you wonder how many more people have also moved out to escape these crazy prices and single rental cheques doesn't it?
