Ok mystery solved, it says Bay Avenue, It's the signage they're putting up for shops not open yet, similar to what malls do. It's now up on a lot of the shops at the front of ET.

We're into our 3rd year, but in any case someone told me that the law has changed and LLs can now put up rent from the second year if the property is below the rent cap for that area. I don't know if that's accurate, but someone else told me their rent went up the second year for that reason...either the poor people got scammed or its true, I dont know. I actually feel sorry for the LLs of ET, they bought right in the middle of the property boom and now the rents are no where near covering their mortgages. More Cafe is a good guess, let's see. Have any of the places on the East Heights side opened yet? Someone said the falafel place was close to opening. Im looking forward to the Lebanese restaurant opening, but it's certainly taking its time!!

I've been trying to figure it out myself and can honestly say I haven't got a clue :-( Also there's a shop opening next to Spinneys...anybody know what that is? I'm loving that we have shops, and can't wait for the roads to be done!!! All this is at a price though, everyone's rent seems to be going up this year.

Give it a chance! I never had a touch screen phone before, and yes it takes time getting used to particularly typing, but once you get used to it there are seriously no limits to what this phone can do. I LOVE my iPhone 4S, best purchase I ever made!!!

Usually whenever you go to the doc they weigh your baby, check their height and head circumference and then plot them on growth charts which show the percentile that your baby fits into. On the growth charts the weight and height should be in the same percentile and should gain as per the chart. So if your baby's height is in the 60th percentile (which means your baby is taller than 60% of babies it's age) then the weight should also be in the 60th percentile, or thereabouts. You worry when say the height is in the 30th percentile and the weight in the 70th percentile. If you visit the doc often then they do this for you. Alternatively u can try weighing the baby at home either buy baby scales or if u have a digital scale then weigh yourself with baby and then without the baby. It's not 100% accurate but better than nothing. Then google baby growth charts and u'll find them online.

Tanya80 I'm going through exactly the same thing, and it's not nice! My baby is 7 months and still wakes up two or three times a night to feed. I'm still breastfeeding and I get the impression that she isn't hungry but more wants the comfort to get back to sleep. She's also a thumb sucker, but that doesn't substitute the breastfeeding when she wakes up at night. I remember back in the UK my Health Visitor told me that babies don't require milk at night from the age of 6 months, so when they do want to feed its out of comfort/habit rather than hunger. I tried the water thing, and it didnt work at all. It just made her cry even more. I know mine is only 7 months, but I'm worried about going forward and think that it'll just be more difficult to break the habit. Having said that, my eldest is 4 and I don't actually remember how I got her to sleep through the night or how old she was. I do remember that she was still breastfed up until she was 9 months and would wake up in the night to feed for the whole time I was breastfeeding. I I'm hoping it will be this same with this one, and it will eventually just happen, however like you I really just want a full nights sleep :-(

Wow-- which supermarket is this? I think that people get a bit too upset over grape-samplers but opening packets is really out of line! I tend to witness "improper sampling behaviour" at buffets, e.g. (1) picking up and squeezing every bread roll before selecting one, (2) picking up a crêpe, sniffing it, taking a bite, not liking it and flinging it back in the chafing dish, (3) tasting a salad-bar item directly from the serving spoon and putting the spoon back into the serving bowl... Nice! That's disgusting!!! It's a buffet - you've already paid, just put it in your plate and try it at your table, or leave it in your plate and don't eat it...you can always go up for more!!!! I totally agree with the whole supermarket trying/tasting thing, it's terrible! The first few days I came to Dubai my DH took me to the supermarket, and then proceeded to spend ages getting shampoo/gel/tissues from the back of the shelves, cheese/yoghurts/milk from the back of the fridges, etc and then proceeded to inspect every cm of each item. Coming from the UK I thought this was the most bizarre thing ever, plus the fact that it took forever to get around the supermarket!! Now fast forward nearly 7 years and that is me today...I will never take food or products from the top and will always take things from the back/bottom, else you do get home and find that a couple of the items that you have bought are opened or damaged. It's a joke! And don't even get me started on the whole rotten/moudly issue...

The whole thing breaks my heart. My husband came back from work yesterday and told me that one of his colleague's brothers wife (if that makes sense), was shot and killed driving back home from work in Syria. My extended family are all in Syria, I honestly don't care how it happens I just want the violence to stop. It's so sad what has become of Syria.

I recommend getting the flu shot every year, this is the second year i've had it and I haven't been ill yet, or if so very mildly (watch me get the worst flu of my life tomorrow...). All family members are able to take it and it protects against the most common strains of flu going around that year.

I suggest that you pay at the RTA when your registration car is due as it will avoid extra cost when paying them online. True actually forgot about that - I think you pay an extra 10 dhs online.

Using that link you can also pay online and not just view fines. There's no penalty for not paying straight away, so a lot of people just accumulate their fines until they have to renew their car registration. You can't renew your car registration unless all fines are paid off. Although bear in mind that if it's a company car, then you should pay it off asap as one outstanding car fine on a company car pretty much delays the paperwork for all cars owned by that company. If you're not in a rush to pay though, then I suggest you wait. About once a year they have a period where all traffic fines are reduced by 40%, as an initiative to get people to settle their fines! This period actually just ended on the 11th Jan so you've missed it this time, but I'm sure they will have another one in a few months. It was great paid off my hubby's 700 dhs speeding fine on my car (grrrrrrr) for 430 dhs!

Citibank used to do Skywards miles (not sure if they still do). Their scheme was you get one Skyward mile for every dollar (not dirham) spent. Check their website and see if this still exists.

There's a whole women's football league that play and train regularly http://www.dubaiwfa.com/ Their matches and games all take place somewhere in Jebel Ali. I have never been myself but I know there are all sorts of levels of play and they pretty much welcome anybody. I played football my whole life growing up and would have loved to join this, but Jebel Ali is just too far for me as I work full time, and then want to spend as much time as possible with my kids so the added time to drive to Jebel Ali and back just didnt work :-( Alternatively Duplays sometimes do a women's league, but I don't think there's one on now but you can check their website. It was indoors, five-a-side, very casual which started off during the summer months. I used to go to that and it was fun, but not as structured as the DWFA who have proper teams and leagues, then I got pregnant and haven't tried to attend since. Let me know if you find anything more central Dubai, I would be very interested to join/participate.

I think you just have to get to the point where you just accept that this is the norm in Dubai...ridiculously frustrating I know :-( Personally I have found that speaking to employees in stores doesn't work at all, as they don't have the authority to make decisions and are too worried about making a mistake that will jeopardise their job. In my experience, it usually helps to send an email to Head Office or pick up the phone and speak to someone at Head Office, the few times I have done this (with various companies) I seem to get a solution to my problem. So maybe try calling the Emax Head Office, or email them if you can find an email address online (oh and don't be nice...that doesnt work!!)

Silicon Oasis? There are buses that go there and it is a nice community, nice buildings, facilities, shops, restaurants - only problem is the commute, but if he was in International City then maybe he's used to it? I know you can get 1 beds there for 35ish, so studios even cheaper.

Not exactly lunch but I went for the Ramadan Iftar, and it was great. Compared to lots of buffet iftars I've been to it was one of the best. My husband also uses this hotel/restaurant a lot when booking corporate events, and the feedback is always positive. Plus it has a gorgeous garden overlooking the sea so you can sit outside after. edited by SEY83 on 24/01/2012

I truly believe that babies are a lot smarter than we think they are, and my guess is that your LO is just testing you and you need to be strong and ignore it. My first child used to scream endlessly in the car seat, and did it for about 2 months and i just ignored her, and eventually she just stopped when she realised that I wasn't going to give her any attention. Since then she has never had any issues sitting in her car seat at all, and she now loves it (she's 4 and refuses to sit in the car without her car seat). My advice is basically just try and be strong about it. I know it's tough and distracting, but by no means stop the car and soothe her as you're just making it tougher for yourself in the future. It's a phase that I'm sure will pass, and then it'll just be a distant memory... edited by SEY83 on 24/01/2012

lol totally agree, I wouldn't expect most mums to read the amount I did on the topic, or call someone a bad mum for doing it differently. I'm just a bit nerdy like that and also with a family history of food allergies and DS having reflux I had a bit more to think about than most, just thought I'd pass it on in case the OP was interested. Most Pediatricians don't have a clue tbh, they just tell you whatever they were taught when they went to med school. Your Drs guidelines are fine, since the baby-rice is fortified its not harmful, its just that you don't [b'>have[/b'> to be that regimented about it, its just tradition rather than science. I was trying to write my point without offending you, so I'm sorry if I did. I was actually highly impressed at the amount you've read, but I wanted the OP to understand my point of view that was basically to go with her mother's instinct. If I was in your situation with a family history and reflux I would definitely be more cautious and take it slow. To be honest I haven't paid much attention to my doctor either and gone with my gut instinct...I probably was more regimented with my first child, but this is my second baby and I'm feeling the classic "I've done this before, I know what to do" symptoms :-P The most important thing I feel is to make sure that you're comfortable with your choices and take it slow. It's like you said right at the start of your first post "this one is a can of worms!"

The past few days she has been a bit grumpy and whiney and chewing on her hands ALOT and chewing on anything she can get her hands on and waking more often for feedings so that makes me think she might be hungry .... Hmmmm ..... Let's see!! Are you sure she's not teething? I know that 4 months is young, but my first daughter had her first tooth come through at 4 and a half months, and I apparently had my first tooth at two and a half months! Having said that my second baby is 7 months in 3 days and still no sign of teeth. Just a thought for you if she's grumpy and chewing, because they're usually the signs. Have a feel of her gums and try and see if they're red and swollen as that will mean a tooth is on the way. Most people don't think about teething until their baby is 6 months so I thought I would mention it.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned and naive or (even ignorant) and I have by no means read all of the research out there on this so please dont take thimyasthenia anything other than my own personal opinion. I just think that this, along with most things children/baby related, really do go back to mother's intuition and doing what feels right for you and your child. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to any of this - you can't even find two doctors that give the same advice! My paediatrician told me not to introduce meat straight away, whereas Kiwispiers is saying you should introduce it straight away. My personal outlook is look around at everyone, can you really tell who was breast fed, bottle-fed, who had solids at 4 months, 6 months, who took a dummy, who sat in a baby walker, who was potty trained at 2 or 4?? Call me laidback, and I will admit that I probably am quite easy going, but I still think I'm a good mother - as is Kiwispiers I'm sure and she has obviously done a lot more research than me. Basically my point is that I don't think u should feel bad about doing what you feel is right for you and ur baby just because it isn't what the guidelines say, just be sensible about it. edited by SEY83 on 22/01/2012 edited by SEY83 on 22/01/2012

My friend delivered at MedCare and had a fantastic experience, and was all praises for the nurses and facilities. If you're happy with your current doctor then I think that's the most important thing. Also bear in mind that American Hospital is ridiculously expensive in case you have medical insurance that only covers upto a certain limit.

I started my baby at about 5 months, and my doctor had actually told me to start early as the latest studies state that babies should start eating at 4 months rather than 6 months. It seems that the doctors advice changes every few months, so in all honesty I don't think it matters whether you choose to go for 4 months or 6 months or somewhere in between. I think the most important factor is when you feel that your LO is ready, and the constant hunger is a good sign! Also, they seem to take an interest when you're eating. I totally believe that's its one of those mother's intuition thing and every baby is different - don't feel guilty at all about giving food at 4 months, just take it slow. I started my LO on the Hipp Organic baby rice which she loves, and its got 4 months on the box (as oppose to others that start from 6 months). In case you want my docs advice is was something like this: - three weeks baby rice - after three weeks introduce veg - after another three weeks introduce fruit - after another three weeks introduce meats (chicken/red meat first and i think fish later cant actually remember so i have to double check!) Oh and dont forget that once they start any solids you have to start giving them water. I hope this helps!! My LO is nearly 7 months, and we're onto fruit...she's loving it and so am I! edited by SEY83 on 22/01/2012

Ok admitedly I'm lazy, but I use the Betty Crockers Pizza Crust sachets and just add water - it's great for when I have nothing to cook and need a quick fix and it works so well. The only thing is that its one of those items that I find in the supermarket and then it suddenly disappears for a couple of months (this drives me insane about certain products in Dubai!!) so now when I do find it I just stock up :-)

Hi coffeegal...I know some people wrote 1 size up on cup and width, but when i was measured (Mothercare in the UK), the lady told me the general advice is one size up on the cup and one size less on the back, which is apparently because the baby is gone so your back size drops. This worked for me!

I'm not an expert in this field at all so I can only tell you what I know, but my understanding is that the landlord cannot increase the rent upon the first renewal of the contract (so only after the second year), and that the increase is subject to the RERA valuation of the area, and also how much you pay in comparison to the average market price for your area and property size. Also, what Hydepark wrote is correct, a landlord can't evict you from a property just because he can get higher rent. The reason has to be that he requires the property for personal use or that he's going to sell it. We just renewed our tenancy contract, but about 20 days before the expiry date we hadnt heard from the landlord so we contacted him. He came back and said that he was selling the property and we may have to vacate. We researched the matter and my DH was told that he has to give us one year's notice if he wants to evict us (i.e. the contract is signed as non-renewable), so he basically had to renew. The landlord then asked for 15,000 Dhs more rent than last year and we also refused as its more than RERA guidelines so we're paying an extra 5,000. In any case, all new contracts are issued through RERA, or get RERA authentication or something like that. If it comes to a dsipute, generally RERA take the tenants side so I dont think you have much to worry about.

If your child is old enough for a booster seat then I would go with that option. Graco do a good one that has the booster seat but then also has a high back - the advantage of that is that you can thread the seat belt through a hook on the side so that when the child sits on the booster the seat belt doesn't go across their face. Then when they're tall enough to have just the booster seat, you can just remove the back. It's not too expensive (incomparison to full car seats), I think I paid about 280 Dhs from Baby Shop, just the booster was aropund 180 I recall. This worked really well for me and you can always ask to test it out in the shop as they usually have a fake car seat and will put the model onto the chair so that you can test it with your child sitting in it to see how it works. Eventually you will need a booster seat anyways once your child becomes too big for a full car seat.

You have to pay the deposit that's for sure, but I think you can challenge the agency fee. Our agent tries to charge us 2.5% commission every year when we simply renew the contract! Having said that we end up giving them something like 500-1000 Dhs, but thats mainly because they run around and do all the paperwork for us (registering the contract, getting the LL's signature, etc). Basically tell the agent that you will pay him some money but definitely not 5% - I've actually found that most agents will reduce the 5% agency fee (even if they've helped you look) you just need to negotiate. I still don't get the logic in this country that the agency fee is paid by the tenant and not the landlord...

There may be more, but the three main branches I know are as follows: - next to Al Murooj complex (somewhere between the back of the Dusit and the Murooj, off Financial Centre Road) - In Deira, don't know the road name but its the one that's parallel to the Creek, and the Etisalat building had the big ball on the top - In Jafilia on Trade Centre Road opposite the Naturalisation Office (again the building has the big ball on the top)

I'm not to sure what the process is, but I know it takes forever to get the money back :-( We had friends that left and in the end what they did is just gave Etisalat my husband's details to receive the 2000 (unfortunately I cant remember how this was paid) and then we just transferred the money to them. I think it took a few weeks for us to receive the money from Etisalat. My husband has this bad habit of paying off only part of his phone bill every month and leaving some of it to accumulate, which I never understood. When I ask him he says its because Etisalat have a 2000 deposit so he doesn't actually owe them anything...I'm now thinking this bad habit isnt that bad!

FaceTime works here if u actually have it already installed, that's the catch! The UAE has it removed from the software so it's not there to begin with. My advice is don't buy your iPad from Apple itself but try other outlets that sell unlocked ones. It's the same with iPhone 4s, mine has FaceTime because I bought it from the UK an I an use it here but if u buy it from etisalat it doesn't have FaceTime installed. Plus u can't just go and download FaceTime, as it's not an application. On the iPhone to get it installed u need to jailbreak ur phone, I'm not sure if u can do that with iPads. So long story short, go and buy it from a shop and specifically ask if it has it, or buy it online from abroad. Try souq.com, I know u can buy unlocked iPhones from there so u may get the same with iPads plus it's cheaper on there.

So I just went down to see the gym, went to check out the West Heights one and they are officially open. The timings are 6am until 10pm so pretty decent. They're all nice and pretty, although I think they've wasted too much space on tables and chairs than actual gym equipment!! So anyways I was talking to the security guy there who said the gyms are free for two weeks but after that there is a monthly membership fee!!!!! He doesn't know how much this will be yet, but he's almost certain that we will have to pay for the gyms!! Excuse me but what are owners forking out service charges for exactly?! Gyms in Dubai are pretty standard in buildings, and these are two gyms between 10 towers! I can understand payment for classes if they're bringing in an instructor but not for use of the actual gyms!! Let's see what happens but I seriously hope he was wrong...

Wow amazing photos! I think Muesli Baar is right that the pic of Burj Khalifa comes from one of the towers near the Business Bay Metro station, but it could likewise be taken further away from that due to the fact that the millenium Tower and Executive towers look so far away. I would love to have more info on the pic taken from the Church in Leicestershire...it completely confused me, but the effect was fantastic! Can anybody explain in simple terms what that pic shows exactly???!

I live in the Executive Towers and absolutely love the location...if your husband prefers an apartment then i would def recommend seeing some of the apartments as they're really spacious and quite good value for money compared to next door Downtown or Old Town. The podium villas aare also nice, but make sure you go for one that faces out to the roads, rather than into the podium as you will have everybody staring into your windows! The biggest downfall of Exec Towers at the moment is the road system, but they are working on it and we have been promised that the roads will be finished soon. Also, the shops are currently in the process of opening, but there's a while to go on that front - we do have a Spinneys tho and a laundry, with a Subway & Gloria Jeans due to open very soon. In terms of kids, the whole development is very very family orientated and child friendly. You will find kids of all ages out playing on the podium area from about 5 onwards. There are also two very large pools that are shared between the towers, that get lots of shade. They're placed in between towers which is why they're shaded, u usually find people crowded in the small area of sun! But if you're like me and don't care for the sun much then you've pretty much got the place to yourself (I've never seen the ppools crowded). The gyms are also due to open in a month, and they're supposed to be Health Clubs rather than gyms which should be nice :-) For the Executive Towers try FAM Properties. Alternatively go to Better Homes who have property listings all over Dubai - their rents can be a bit more expensive but you get a great service. Hope this helps :-)
