I'm so thrilled that I have finally had some news about my passport! Having said that they want me to sign a letter clarifying why I want my passport returned to an address that is different from my residence address. I don't recall them asking on the application why I was requesting a different return address but maybe I missed it. Anyways, did anybody put a different return address, and if so, we're you asked to sign a letter clarifying why? My reasons are that I want my passport returned to my work address as 1. That's where I am during the day, and 2. I'm used to my postal address being work as there is a PO box number and I don't have a personal one. JShepard I'm hoping you hear some news soon as well!

my status still says under examination and I got it back yesterday, I don't think updating the system has been their priority so it might still be ok. Can you please post the link where you're able to login and check your application status? I can't login anymore as the system looks different. Thank you!

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope all goes well for you. With regards to your question, I believe that pregnancy tests are only done for housemaids, female drivers, babysitters, etc (so more in the domestic help sense). Therefore, I doubt that it will come up in a residency medical. Check out this link http://www.guide2dubai.com/info/medical-tests-rules.asp Having said that, wouldn't it make life easier for you to just tell your new manager up front? I know it's tough, but I'm one of those people that feels that it's better for everyone if you're just honest upfront. I know you don't want to jump the gun, but explain your situation and at least you will feel that you're going in with all your cards laid out on the table.

Hi SEY83, sorry to hear you've been stressed about your application. I know how you feel. Sorry I haven't read all the responses, but have you tried calling the passport office and making an enquiry? I did this and got through straight away. They were very helpful and reassuring. +44 300 222 0000 Hth x I called the passport office over the weekend, and to be honest the guy wasn't very helpful. He said they had received my documents on the 21st May and then looked up the minimum processing time for UAE applications and said not to expect it before 6 weeks from the 21st May. He also said to treat that as a minimum and there was no maximum time period and he couldn't give me any further information at all other than my passport being at the examination stage (i.e. sat in one of those rooms full of orange boxes). I will try and call them again in a few days. I just hope that with all the media surrounding this at the moment they 1. will get their act together to clear the backlog, and 2. scare off anybody thinking to send off a renewal so that the number of incoming passports drops.

I'm so stressed out about my application now. I still have time, and figure that from the date they received the application (21st May according to their records) until the date I travel I have allowed ten weeks in total. If I don't get my passport back then obviously we wont go home, but also our mini-family break that involves 11 people won't happen either. My MP has sent two emails to the passport office and they haven't responded to either. Now to add insult to injury I can't find the online login page anymore to check my application progress as the whole online interface seems to have changed and I can't navigate to the link where existing applications can check progress. Can anybody post the link of that login page if you have found it please?

I think it depends on the curriculum. The British schools I believe all close on the 26th June, and the American schools I think are closing at the end of this week. However, I know a lady whose children go to Al Mawakeb and their last day was the 5th June. It really does vary, but I don't think any schools, from what I have heard, are as late as July.

Congratulations ladies! No good news on my front yet :( but optimistic given the amount of people that got their passports back today. Having said that I finally got through to the passport office a while ago, I basically got a whole load of nothing and was told minimum turnaround time from Dubai is 6 weeks so don't expect it before then. Guy said mine was at the examination stage. I got nothing through when my MP emailed them either. I have until the end of July but seriously this is just stressing me out now.

I've gone down the email my MP route...it's been 3 and a half weeks since I sent the application so I'm not even at the 4 week mark but I'm concerned now that with the mad focus and people fast tracking in the UK and everyone calling in a panicked frenzy mine will just get pushed further down the pile if I don't enquiry. I was initially going to wait a couple of weeks as I'm not travelling until the end of July but I don't want my patience to go against me. In any case I figure I haven't got anything to lose. My local MP immediately emailed the passport office on an MP email address so let's see, I will keep you posted.

When you applied online you should have been sent an email. If you can find that then the reference number should be on that. It is different from the tracking number and password. There is no way of getting the password etc if you didn't make a note of it at the time but the reference number should be on the email. I just checked the email that I got when I submitted my application and there is no reference number. I haven't got to the stage where I am chasing up on my application but worried I don't have my reference number! ETA Just found my application number when I logged in online (I know that's not helpful for those that can't log in online). edited by SEY83 on 11/06/2014

Sorry to ask again but ... Can anyone confirm the user name and password sent where all lower case? Or should your name and initial be upper case and only password all lower case? I really don't want to black my account. It says if you do it incorrectly 3 times they will block it, is that in total or do they give you 3 new shots after a day or so? Thanks :) For me the name and initial are uppercase, then I have 6 numbers. The password is 8 letters all lower case.

I have tried twice with the password and username I was sent by uk gov when setting it up.... But it says its incorrect and if I do it again it will lock my account!,, The numbers are what I got when I submitted the application from Gov.Uk. The username is my first initial and surname plus six numbers and the password they gave is 8 small cap letters. I'm not sure if everyone's has a similar format or not. It is case sensitive apparently.

So the Passport office finally emailed me this morning, it was short and sweet, pointing out that the passport is at the examination process - is this the first stage?! Oh and they said that passports are taking a minimum of six weeks now. I think there are only three stages, examination, printing and dispatched (I may be wrong). In fairness that doesn't say much because examination really means the application is sat in a box somewhere until they get round to it. I can deal with 6 weeks waiting, I'm just hoping it's not longer than that.

Glad to see I'm not the only one freaking out about getting a passport renewal back in time for our summer holiday. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the fact that my child is a boarder in another country and travels up and down to Dubai meant I had a tiny window in which to send it off. Anyway am I right in assuming that you can't do anything until after the 4 week period? What irritates me is Fedex said it was delivered on 15/05 yet the Passport Office says they only received it on the 20th - needless to say sat on a desk somewhere! I've emailed twice and all I get is a useless standard reply which doesn't even refer to my question. A few days ago my husband travelled to the UK on business and so I got him to phone the help line (cheaper from there than here) After waiting 30 mins for someone to answer, a very dour gentleman said he could't help because "if you have applied from overseas, you can only call up from overseas to enquire" - and that "a local enquiry on that number was impossible". My husband pointed out the ridiculousness of the whole thing only to be told the passport its still in the investigation stage and to refer to the timing given on the initial application. To make matters worse, I got myself in such a tizz I locked myself out of the online portal so I have no idea where its at now. So guess I just sit tight.. has anyone who sent theirs off around the same time as mine (20th May) had any GOOD news?? The passport office received my passport around the same time as yours. All I have so far is "declaration form received, being processed". I'm trying not to panic so far (I'm not travelling until the end of July), but come the 5/6 week mark I will be emailing the infamous Paul Pugh. Let me know how you get on.

I also suggest that you try Emirates Post who can provide fast courier services just like DHL, Aramex etc. I sent a box full of about 200 wedding invitations to the UK earlier this year and they cost me 300 dhs to send, they probably weighed closer to 3-4 kgs. They can also provide packing boxes for about 5-10 dhs if you need a box.

If the 3 years and 8 months only applies to KG1/FS2 then all British curriculum schools conform to this anyways, so there is no change. That's how I read it based on the KHDA letter that somebody posted and also matches what Horizon and Kings have said.

SEY83, could you please help me, it's all so confusing. My daughter was born on 29 December 2010 and was accepted to Gems royal Dubai to start FS1. Will she still go to school this year? I appreciate your help thank you Bump :) getting too stressed now Sorry Apr04 I was away from my computer! Your daughter still qualifies for FS1 in September 2014...literally by 3 days so if they do implement the new rule properly this year then she will be one of the very youngest in the class. The cut-off for September 2014 is the 31st December 2010.

So FS2 children born Sept-Dec will start at only age 3 - that seems incredibly young considering how formal the education in FS2 is and then they'll have to go back a year perhaps if they move. FS2 children will start at age 4 years and 8 months. I just spoke to my eldest DD's school and she said that they have received the notice from the KHDA that the new policy comes into effect from this September. They are now awaiting instructions from the GEMS corporate office on what to do with children that they have already accepted but no longer qualify for FS1.

So the only thing that has changed is the cut off date ie from September the 1st (except nationals who are exempt till 15th) to the 31st of December. This WILL have an effect on anyone moving back to the UK who has a child who has a Birthday from September to Dec (inc). They may well have to sit down a year, well they will in State and Private schools will base it on academic assessment. I still think that children born between Sep-Dec are the ones unaffected. They will turn 4 between Sep and Dec of 2014 so they qualify for admission into FS1 of September this year. It's the children turning 4 between Jan- Aug that are now going to be pushed back a year so instead of being able to enter FS1 in Sep 2014, they now cannot be admitted into FS1 until Sep 2015. So if these children move to another country they will be a year older than their peers.

So my son was born in June 2012. When should he start FS 1? He's close to my DD who is July 2012, so they would start 2016 it seems! I guess we shall wait and see! Khaleej Times article actually says this will into effect this September - meaning my daughter will re-do nursery and enter FS1 in September 2015: "Schools which start their academic year in September, will be allowed to enrol students who complete the age of four by December 31. These schools will be expected to follow the rule starting this year itself. Other students going to Indian curriculum schools which start in April, will have to complete four years by July 31 of the admission year. These schools will have to follow the new age criteria from 2015." The article later says: "The rule will take effect across the country and it will ensure age uniformity, even when children change their school or curriculum." So it doesn't make sense that this only applies to some curriculums and not others - not that I'm disputing what Horizon has sent out, it just seems odd. I honestly can't see how they can implement this from this September - schools have already sent out acceptances for September 2015, and this will mean that everyone that falls between 1st Jan 2011 and 31st Aug 2011 have to be retracted. It also means classes for this coming year group will be tiny as they will only have students between September 2010 and December 2010 as older than that are already in the system!

I have to admit that I'm on the fence about it all. I agree mine was going to be a little one in the class, and whilst she is very clever she does need help on the social skills part as she can be clingy to me and I think a big school setting would freak her out - she even started crying again when I was dropping her off at nursery a couple of weeks ago (having been there since September and being fine). So all-in-all I was happy to keep her in the nursery setting for another year and opted to do FS1 at nursery and then enter school for FS2. Oh and she also refuses to be toilet trained :( The new policy throws me off guard more than anything else, especially if we ever leave Dubai. It won't make a huge difference to anything, and she will now be in the middle of her age-group which is probably a good thing. If school make her repeat FS1 then at least she has moved from school to nursery so it's a different setting. Like I said it's me that has to get my head around it all, but in the scheme of things its not a big deal.

Ok here is my interpretation...maybe completely wrong because this is confusing. 2014: 1st September 2010 - 31st August 2011 (this doesn't change as policy comes into effect from 2015) 2015: 1st Jan 2011 - 31st December 2011 (this year will be a mess as there will be overlap between this age group and the year before - there will be children here that will be made to repeat a year of nursery) 2016: 1st Jan 2012 - 31st December 2012 2017: 1st Jan 2013 - 31st December 2013 This is from my discussion with my DD's current nursery. My DD turns 3 in June, had the policy been implemented for this coming academic year then she would not have been eligible for FS1 in September as she is below 3 and 8 months (or birthday falls after January 1st 2011) so she would have had to repeat a year of nursery and then move into FS1 in September 2015. The children who will be unaffected by this new policy are those that have birthdays between 1st Sept - 31st Dec, as either way they remain in the same age group. It is children born between 1st Jan and 31st August that will be pulled back a year (causing the inconsistency with schools outside of the UAE) with the reason being to allow them longer time in a nursery type setting as they shouldn't be admitted into school before 3 years and 8 months of age. FS1 will now have children between 3 years and 8 months, and 4 years and 8 months.

So as an example (if this is correct) my youngest would been allowed to be in a year above as to where she is now due to a birthday past the September cut off date. If the age is 4years for FS1 then this will mean year 1 children will be 6 -7 not 5-6 as they are now. I interpret it the other way - that children will be in a year below their peers when they go home. So whereas in the UK children that turn 3-4 will be FS1, here FS1 will be children that are 3.8-4.8.

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of this new policy, mainly because it puts Dubai out of sync with other countries. If I'm understanding properly then my DD who turns 3 in June will be able to enter FS1 this year under the old law. My issue is that I have her doing FS1 at nursery, so I'm hoping when she does go to school that she will be admitted in FS2 as the nursery has a fully accredited FS1 programme by the MoE. I can already anticipate that this could lead to drama, but hopefully not. I think this puts children moving to another country at a disadvantage where the cut-off dates are still September, meaning they are then older than their classmates. I guess at the end of the day it is what it is...

My daughter takes swimming lessons with Hamilton Aquatics. They run classes for children all over Dubai on all days of the week. Your children will be assessed to see which level they should be placed in and then you will be told what days lessons are available. There is a mall called Al Bustan Centre in Deira which pretty much specialises in evening gowns - shop after shop of dresses. Some of the shops make dresses to order, but a lot of them sell ready-made dresses. There is every single style you can imagine under the sun, from simple to extravagent. The prices are very affordable for what you can get.

Food onboard is becoming a joke. Last breakfast I had , inedible. Last "steak" I had was a chunk of rubber that would have removed a tooth. Gotta love the 'aloe vera' yogurt as well…who eats Aloe Vera yogurt?- must be the bulk bargain yogurt- kind of like the bright pink paint you can get 1/2 price at the hardware store lol. Ek catering is a shocker. Biryani is only reliable thing- probably because mostly rice so it is cheap for them. Food onboard is becoming a joke. Last breakfast I had , inedible. Ek catering is a shocker. Biryani is only reliable thing- probably because mostly rice so it is cheap for them. I completely agree with the food being inedible. I have just flown to the UK and back with Emirates, and I was surprised how bad the food is. I usually fly Virgin or Royal Brunei and the food for both is much better, plus you get served more frequently. With Virgin you get the standard meal, a sandwich, jelly beans, chocolate bars, ice cream, all sorts of stuff. They seem to serve you something different every hour. With Emirates we got the standard bag of svoury snack (horrible), then the main meal where the only decent part of it is the snack box that has the crackers and Kiri cheese in it (and thats decent), the bread is hard, the meal is horrible and even the salad isn't great. Then at the end you get a Penguin cake bar. The childs meals are even worse. My children refused to eat the meal because it tasted like plastic, and then all other options were junk food - even McDonalds offers fruit!! I guess I shouldn't complain too much - there are advantages, one of the big ones being the 30kg baggage allowance and the fact that flights are generally on time and if you even lose a bag you get it delivered back to you fairly quickly. They also have good in-flight entertainment. My real disappointment was the food, particularly because in the past it was a lot better, but I generally bring a sandwich on board with me and snacks. I also feel that you get much less leg room.

Try Rouyati (Ru2yati in Arabic) they do Islamic classes for children of all ages. They are based in Nadd Al Hamar near Mirdif. I think most of their classes are conducted in Arabic though which I'm not sure if you want or not, although it would be best to call and check. The number is 04 2899924.

I have to agree with Tattie Bogle and say that 22k is certainly doable. I'm not sure if the 4k is additionaly or included within, but either way you can certainly live. I know of many families that are currently living on less than that much, and they are still able to afford everything they need and also have money left over to socialise, go out, etc. In some cases they have more than one child. You need to keep in mind that you might not live in your most ideal location, so Silicon Oasis or Dubai Land as TB said, or even somewhere closer to Sharjah. I personally think Silicon Oasis is a great location, it has the facilities that you need, it's affordable with good sized houses and the commute to Downtown is only 15-20 minutes. I think in Dubai we all live a lifestyle that we would never dream of anywhere else and spend on things that we probably wouldn't do back home. We go out way more than really necessary. It's true that some things comes with big expenses, such as schooling, but to make it work you as a family have to decide what your priorities are. I think you would find a job if you are a fully trained teacher. I have heard that a lot of schools are clamping down on teachers that are not properly qualified so their maybe more jobs available (don't hold me on that!). Honestly, I think your husband has a decent offer and as a start here in Dubai you will be able to afford to live on it. I would check the things that TDB mentioned, such as flights home and medical insurance though.

Slightly off topic, but not. I have heard from two different people lately that the KHDA have changed their age criteria so that children can only be admitted to FS1 if they are 3 years and 8 months old. I tried to google this to get more info but ended up even more confused. I'm in a similiar boat to you ladies as my youngest is a June baby, but the idea of her repeating FS1 does not make me feel happy, especially as my daughter is very bright for her age. Does anybody have anymore info about this new law? I found the below online: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/change-in-age-criteria-for-kg1-puts-schools-in-a-spot-1.1284047 http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/age-criterion-for-kg1-admission-will-be-3-years-plus-clarifies-uae-ministry-of-education-1.1298594

Could you not agree with the person running the nearest gate to keep track of everybody going to the party (usually you can tell with the gift in hand) and then you can pay for everybody later? I went to a birthday party once and it was on a Saturday morning in less used gate of Safa park and the birthday party was set up very close to the gate. The hostess had arranged to pay for everybody - I can only presume that she had asked the person on the gate to keep track, or had paid an amount upfront and they were deducting from it. I guess it would only work if you were setting up close to a gate and at a non-peak time though, but maybe worth asking at the gate if it was possible. I do agree with the other ladies though in terms of it not being a big deal to pay for yourself to get it, and probably be embarrassed if I was offered 5dhs! edited by SEY83 on 23/03/2014

New Look do carry the maternity range here but it is only in a couple of their branches. I used to trek all the way to City Centre because previously that was the only branch that had maternity clothes, but I believe the branches that have maternity clothes have since changed. I suggest that you give the City Centre branch a call and find out which branch now carries maternity clothes. I found New Look the best - the clothes are very affordable, fashionable and they had a big range. Also Mothercare has maternity clothes, and I agree with Destination Maternity as well - like somebody said it is pricey there, but at the back they have a few ranges that are much more affordable.

Search on Facebook for "Make Up by Dee & Dal", they also have a website so you could try a google search as well. I can't recommend them enough. They are twin sisters that do both hair and make-up, and I think their prices are very reasonable. They will come to you and bring everything with them.

SEY, i didn't see you post, sorry for the repeat post so quickly! Need to log into the site more regularly! Oh don't worry - I just found it hilarious that you posted pretty much the exact same question as me and then referenced it in the same way I did as being daft given that we live in the desert! I only needed a bucket full of sand for something at my daughter's school, so ELC worked for me, but I can imagine filling a sandpit would be tough.

It's like deja vu! I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago with an equally similar intro to my question. I ended up buying it from ELC. It was 25dhs for a 10kg bag of sand...I know that sounds like a lot, but I was surprised at how small the bag was.

I love the downstairs area, I was telling my husband that if we didn't live in ET, then this is a place I would want to come and spend my weekends as it has something for everyone. My kids go down to the play area every weekday, I use the jogging track as often as I can (I used to just run on the pavement by the restaurant area), and it now all looks pretty! I'm even happy to see business at some of the restaurants is picking up as so many places have packed up and left. It's a shame we have to leave in November having lived in ET for 4 years and have been waiting for all of these projects to finally be completed.

I started alone doing insanity at home for like 3 weeks and lost 5 KGs in 3 weeks. then i injured my knee and the doc advised me to stop.. after my knee got better (2 weeks) i joined FF and thought i'd only attend the classes and do some treadmill.. i thought i would never use a PT.. but honestly i met the most amazing trainer and i love her to bits.. she's great i workout with her 3 times a week.. and the 2 other times i attend the zumba GX class. i can tell you i see a huge difference.. i already can see muscles.. and toning around my tummy.. if you have the money it is so much better to spend it on your health rather than on anything else.. FF also have this new thing called myzone and it records everything.. your heartbeat, calories.. i will continue with a PT until i reach my goal.. then i will do everything i learnt on my own and continue attending zumba.. i love zumba it's so much fun.. a bit of a break from weightlifting.. and circuit training Instead of Insanity, try a program by the same instructor (Shaun T) called Focus T25. It's 5 days a week, 25 minutes each, but a very intense 25 minutes. You will definitely see results, and with it being so short it is very manageable. It also includes a modifier for each exercise, in case you feel like some of the exercises are too tough. I have done Insanity and the results are amazing, but it is a very very tough program which requires a high amount of dedication. I think Focus T25 is much more reasonable. In all honesty I was very skeptical about the home exercise programs, but this has been mind-changing for me, so I highly recommend. PS. I do not work for them in any way shape or form, I'm just sharing my experience, as I am a full-time working mother with 2 young children and I just couldn't afford the time to go to the gym, so this worked well for me.

I don't know the Lime Tree Cafe recipe but in case you can't get a hold of it then this is a really really good recipe - I have had so many compliments when I make this cake, although I don't add the walnuts in the cake. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/carrot_cake/
