For starters dont be worried. Its not that bad. I too travelled with DS alone at 6 weeks and have been doing it ever since. 1 - Feed him at take off and landing, especially from 20mins before landing as it usually hurts thier ears. 2 - Travel light. Better to stick to breastmilk than lug around bottles, formula, water, etc etc plus your handbag, plus your baby's clothes. Depending on the length of your flight time, take as many diapers as you think you will need during that time, plus 2 extra. Wet wipes, changing mat (u can even buy disposable ones) too. Try to put everything in one handbag or even back pac so that u dont have to handle so many things. 3 - Let baby be dressed in one of those sleep suits Dont bother with fancy clothes. Sleep suits are easy for you and for him. And take maybe 2 extra suits. 4 - Make sure u reserve the front row seats so that u get a bassinet. And make sure the bassinet is padded with an airline blanket before u put him in. I think U just need one blanket for him, unless your travelling to somewhere really cold. 5 - For meals, u can ask them to bring you one plate at a time if you arent able to put him down or something. I usually eat heavy before i board so that I dont have to manage a tray and a running toddler :) 6 - dont worry abt his cold.. and he prolly gonna sleep most of the trip leaving you to enjoy a movie :)

Dr. Elsa is excellent. I am with her right now, and yes, the waiting can be crazy sometimes. I have waited 2 hrs to see her once, and another time I saw her in abt 15minutes. Best is to call them beforehand and see if they are running on schedule or not. She is quite nice at consultations, she doesnt hurry you, she is a lot more open about natural birth and alternative delivery positions, she has right now agreed to let me deliver in any position that I prefer. I told her i do not want to be on the bed and she was fine with that. She hasnt forced any cervix checks on me, she was fine with me not wanting my weight to be monitered. I waited 3 months to get an appt with her myself, but I think she is worth the trouble. Will let you know how labor and delivery goes if you are interested :)

Read Ina May Gaskin - Guide to Childbirth! They shudnt be telling you to do a c-section unless you hit 42 weeks or so. Thats not true i was told way before 40 weeks i was having a c section ...it depends on everyones cicumstances. Yup! Agree with you :) But this lady was told to do a c-section because she is a few days past her due date.. it seemed ore like the doc is in a hurry to get it over and done with.. :)

Read Ina May Gaskin - Guide to Childbirth! They shudnt be telling you to do a c-section unless you hit 42 weeks or so. And your body isnt going to produce a baby that cant come out through you. It depends on whether u want a natural birth or a c-section. If you want a natural one, walk a lot, have s#x, eat spicy stuff, etc And if you want a c-section, well like the other posters said, it isnt that long a time, and i highly doubt if they will give the baby directly in your hands or your Dh's as soon as the baby is born.. they dont just stick thier hands in and take the baby out, its some sort of procedure.. U will have to wait atleast 5 minutes. And u arent going to know a thing anyways. I hope you have a natural birth and soon :) And

Lol! for starters no where in her thread has the OP implied that ppl who send thier kids to nursery earlier are bad mothers.. but can understand why some ladies here are touchy about it :D )i've had the same reaction when I go anti-formula milk too) She was just trying to understand why some people do it earlier than the others. And i agree with her, I find more younger kids here go to nursery.. and i dont know if its the norm in the world, but even i think below 18months is a bit too young for the babies. I have personally considered nursery for my DS at 13 months and at 19months and now i just decided that its definitely not time for him yet. ETTO! Of course, some mothers have to work, and dont have a choice. But i personally think that the OP was talking about mothers who actually dont work, have househelp and still send their kids out to nursery for their own convenience and yes, there are plenty of that kind of mothers too. How many times have you seen kids very tiny babies (below 6months) bawling and thier mothers just continue shopping? Its not because they dont love thier child, its just ignorance. I have had so many people tell me not to hold my baby boy continuously because apparently he will get used to the warmth of my hands.. again ignorance! I think many mothers (not expatwoman.com mothers) do not take the time or effort to actually learn about their children, developments, etc. For instance, how many lo-risk mothers opt for elective c-section simply because they arent willing to bear the pain.. hello? this is your kid?? Ok i've rampled into different topics.. but anyways, i just wanted to say that the OP has a right to her opinions and I dont think she was trying to make anyone feel guilty. Albeit, i think she was wondering if she was missing out something for her kid by not sending her child to the nursery.

Maybe I am just reading too much into DD's actions, but DD is 11 months old and indicates that she wants to potty by flaring her nostrils and making a clear grunting sound (not very ladylike), we strip off her nappy and she poops in the potty and then tries to stand up when she is done. If she does not want to potty, then no matter how hard we try, she does not sit down on the potty. She does still poo in her nappy from time to time, but it is an exception rather than the rule. I believe on some level she understands the need to poo in the potty because she gives us her nose flare and grunt and then waits till we put her on the potty. only if we miss the sign or do not respond fast enough does she go ahead and poo in her nappy and then screams till she gets changed. We started doing this when she was 7 months old and it took us about 3 weeks to get her signals. I know that we still do ALL the work, but I really hope that it is a foundation for the future. Thats exactly what my DS used to do, whcih is why i plopped him on his potty. And yes, there were occasional incidents in the diaper, but rare. I think its very helpful especially when we go out, as i really dislike changing his diaper in public toilets. I'd say go ahead and plop her on her potty. :)

i always though that inorder to protect the babies ears u should breastfeed during take off and landing. however last time we flew i was told not to do that, not allowed as baby needed to be facing forward, sitting with his back towards my tummy? ok that is BS! I have taken more than 20 flights before my DS turned 12months and each time he has been breastfed take of and landing. He always had the child belt on him too.

I am a sahm. I used to work in events, crazy hours, always on adrenaline. Pay was very interesting :) But then i had always decided I wouldnt work once I had a baby. We have babies wat? 2 -3 times? 4 times in our lives? And they grow up so very fast. I want to be there for the first step/tooth/burp. I dint want to miss the cuddling. I dint want to be tired for my kids. I am not saying staying at home is easy. Sometimes u even wonder if you will be doing anything else other than changing numerous diapers, feeding all the time, etc etc. But end of the day when baby gives you a kissie, u do forget all that. Loss of personality, i think I am very proud of being a mother. I think working makes u tough, and being a mom makes u soft. Its a whole different experience. I think men feel better when their wives stay at home. I dunno about all these modern theories, but if you go to basics, its the man who provides for the family. And if you stop working, its an ego boost for your DH that you are dependent on him. Yes, i knw it sounds weird, but then your DH knows your quite capable of looking after yourself and you are doing this for the sake of your children. Its a sacrifice on your part. I personally think all mothers who can afford to should stay at home. Its always better for the kids. You have the rest of your life to work. But your kiddies will grow up and leave the nest sooner than you think. I refuse to go back to working full time now.. definitely not untill the kids are in school.. and funnily I have actually discovered something else I am good at and am working on that when I get time. Similarly, for all you know, you may discover something entirely different too! Good luck!

Ok my DS is 20months and half potty trained. Ie, he tells me when he needs to poo, but i still have to put him on the toilet seat (he has a tiny one on top of ours) and i still have to wash him and dress him back again. He is still in his pull ups and he doesnt poo in it. However, his pee is still in the pullup. I started putting him on the seat when he was about 9months old, whenever i saw his face wrinkle up to go. And kept telling him its poo. Now he just holds his bum and comes running to me when he needs to go.. :) I personally think its an advantage if you can atleast get them to tell u to poo. Its easier to clean up. Eitherways, i dont think I will stop his pull ups till he is older. HTH

Went to the farmer's market this morning! I think that it's a great start to introducing Dubai residents to eating locally and responsibly. Sure, improvements can be made, but it's the first step... Today I found on sale: eggplant (aubergine), koosa (marrow), beets with the greens attached, red and white radish, fresh sage, fresh chives, parsley, coriander, broccoli, long flat beans, green beans, cauliflower, tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, various lettuces, rocket, spinach, carrots with the greens attached, red capsicum, yellow capsicum, purplish-black capsicum, small red chili peppers, large red chilli peppers, purplish okra, green okra, free-range eggs (Dhs 10 for 6), drinking laban in a cool glass bottle (Dhs 20), various kinds of honey (Dhs 95/each), Egyptian strawberries (Dhs 5/punnet), mandarin oranges, oranges, sugar cane. Plus the amazing stall put on by Baker & Spice that had beautiful breads, cakes, muffins, jams. Bought everything on my weekly shopping list except potatoes, onions, bananas. Total spend was Dhs 65. I will be going back next week inshaAllah! No wonder we dint find much! U pretty much finished everything!!! ;)

oh i know how that feels!! I had to park in a construction site, with all the lovely men watching me, just to feed ds! I had 3 locals stop by to ask if everything was ok, (prolly cos they saw a woman in the construction area), but when they saw two little feet sticking out of my chest, they just smiled and left :) Honestly, just dont worry. If u need to stop, just stop anywhere on the side of the road with your hazard lights on. Try to avoid the highway till you get confident. Make sure she is fed before u put her in your carseat. Some kids take a few minutes/days before they adjust to the car seat. Just remember, your priority is safety while driving. A few minutes of crying wont hurt her, but make sure you dont get nervous. A cool head will help. And sometimes so does singing to her :) Good luck! And tell us how it goes!

I found that DS started being interested in toys around 18months.. till then he wasnt so much into them. If your taking him out everyday, wow! thats great! He is just exploring his house now, so let him be. I would say dont waste ur money on too many toys yet. I usually read a story or 2 for DS at bedtime. Even i had felt my DS was bored at around 11months and was even considering nursery for him.. thank god i dint! :) Just let him play with pots and pans.. calculator.. hangers.. odd things around the house that are safe.. He should be fine.. :)

sippycup, i dint realise this thread was started by you. I have seen your baby and she is one of the most gorgeous kids i have seen. Yes, she isnt fat, but then not all kids are. She was very interactive with me, she definitely dint look like she was under nourished or even sick in the least bit. She was such a happy baby mashalla! I am not the baby expert, but as a mother, I really think she is fine and healthy. I am and always will be a great supporter of breastmilk and anti formula milk, and i think you are doing great by BFing her. Seriously, there is blessing in breastmilk, stick to it! And give Fatima a big kiss from me :)

For starters, ask your friend to get a doula! Doulas are amazing birth support women.. so highly recommended! I had my first at Medcare. The doctor was great, but i wasnt happy with the hospital. They hardly followed my birth plan. Plus when it was time for me to push, they threatened me with a c-section if i dint push and i pushed so hard that i tore really bad and had the worst time getting healed. And on top of that got infected. Not a happy ending there. Plus i hear that they routinely break your waters at 4cm whther u like it or not now. Oh and their lactation consultant was fabulous! Very nice lady :) I am with City Hospital now. Doctor is great. Excellent reveiws! Hoping for the best! Can tell u more of my experience next month.

Oh i really have to deliver after the 20th! Before that is just not convenient! sigh! I hope baby knows that! I had BH at 31 weeks with my ds and it was so painful and continous that i thot i was in labor! Had it for almost 48hrs continously every 5-10mins! but yes, jsut turned out to be practicing! Of course, it also turned out that i has a random cyst which made things painful.. This time round i keep getting BH, but i havent really kept track when it started.. it comes and goes, especially since i do carry my 11kg DS sometimes.. And it isnt painful or anything.. just a tightening of the belly.. Pls pray i dont pop before the 20th ladies..

I live in Doha but am here for delivery of my second child. I chose not to deliver at Hamad Hospital in Doha, because they wouldnt let my DH or any other person into the labor room. They are backwards like that. I dunno about cancer, but, during my last pregnancy i had a problem at 31 weeks and they were so thorough, it was amazing! And all we paid was AED 84 for a scan, CTG, urine test, doctor consultation, blood test and i cant even remember wat else. Also, when my DS fell sick, we went to the pediatric emergency and they checked every possible thing, and it was totally free. When my DH's newborn niece fell sick, they were very very thorough with her and found out exactly what was wrong with her. And again totally free for a 1 week hospital stay for mother and child. My Sis in law delivered 2 kids there, for free, and natural delivery. It is not luxury of Dubai pvt hospitals, but the treatment and diagnosis is excellent. Till very recently, they were giving open heart surgeries for free. If you compare Doha and London, well you cant compare. Doha is still developing, and no where even close to Dubai. HTH

highly highly recommend a doula for labor and birth! I had Nicola from Dubai Doulas for my first delivery. And thank god she was there! She was great support o my DH and mother who were also present and worried during my labor. Her partner Elizabeth Bain (http://www.dubaidoulas.com/) is still in Dubai and is simply amazing! She was previously a midwife also before becoming a doula :) Then there is Silvia Winkler (http://www.my-doula.com/), Andrea Guy, Zannie and so many other lovely women! I think u will be spoilt for choice and wont know which one to choose as they are all sooo lovely and so supportive! Having a doula is like having you best friend through your labor. She smiles at you, encourages you, and basically supports you. Its amazing what the female body can accomplish and these women let you believe in yourself.
