Level 1 Day 1 of shred done! Everything hurts! ;) Good on you for starting...I couldn't do it for the first three days without pausing in-between. I am now at the point where I can get through Level 1 without pausing. And the aches and pains are lesser too :)

Wk 1, Run 3 done. Does anyone know of an app that can just tell me when to walk and when to run while I play my own music on my ipod?

Have you checked with the Medical Test authorities? A friend had a similar issue (in another country though), and it seems he hadn't cleared the medical tests for some reason.

Commissions are usually shared between buyer and seller here in the UAE (usually 2% - split two-ways so seller pays 1% and buyer the other 1%)

Am so sore today after starting the Shred yesterday, have just been barely managing to limp along. Though did manage to do the c25k run. Am dreading Level 1, Day 2 tomorrow (those of who do this on an everyday basis, how do you manage with the aching muscles??)

Most Lakes villas and townhouses are 3-4 bedrooms. The detached houses which you can find in Deema and Maeen maybe a little more than 200,000. The attached houses in Zulal, Forat, Maeen and Ghadeer can be had for under 200,000. The best way to find houses to rent here, IMO, is simply to drive around and call the nos. which have To Let signs outside.

Week 1, Run 1 - done. Am on my way to shift those excess pounds. Though can anyone comment - as a newbie (have done some elliptical before), must I run everyday or every other day? Also, if I combine this with the Shred - must I do the Shred one day and the 5k another or must I do both everyday (for maximum potential weight loss?)

I think you have been getting very negative and perhaps somewhat biased reviews of DIA here. DS goes to DIA Primary. Though I am moving him out the coming year, I have to say that I was quite happy with his first year at DIA (he goes to KG1). This is why I have no complaints, am quite happy with the Primary school: 1) They have 1 teacher and two TA's per class of 25 (That is 1 to 8 ratio which ain't bad) 2) They have a very good PE and Music and Movement program. The teachers are really quite good and he really loves these classes. 3) The facilities are good, they have 2 pools, football field, indoor gyms, outdoor play areas etc. 4) The teaching is very nurturing - at least in the primary years - it really helps a child feel secure and his thoughts and opinions valued. Independence is encouraged and I am very happy in my child's progress at being able to express himself. 5) They have a very good after school activity schedule. The child is busy and is able to explore very many activities - creative, sport, intellectual even fun stuff like lego clubs etc. 6) They learn through play. They learn through DOING things, doing projects, having theme based classes - I cannot think of a better way to build an enquiring, curious, eager to learn mind. 7) They have many events in school - which builds on the whole international community spirit - his social skills have developed quite well. 8) At least in the primary years - there is excellent communication between the teachers and parents regarding weekly school progress etc. The main problem I've found and my reason for moving him is, 1) Since they seem to have no written down, set curriculum - sometimes I feel DS is not being challenged enough academically. HTH

Finally managed to kick-start, and went on a healthy food diet and exercise regime.. Diet mainly consists of eating right - balanced proteins (like eggs, fish, chicken), good carbs like veg n fruit n some whole wheat bread and dairy like low fat milk and yoghurt. Started eating a breakfast after perhaps 10 years and did the elliptical at the gym using a hill interval program for 30 mins everyday for a month. Sure enough saw the scales move and lost 3 kg - and this has motivated me to start the Shred. I have a lost to lose to reach my ideal weight (60 kg - am currently weighing 75 kg) Have never lifted weights before - so am a bit nervous - what weight dumbbells do I get for my first month of the Shred? Any other pointers that will help me on my journey to weight-loss? First step done though (got a copy of the Shred from exercisetv - thanks to the suggestions here :)

The Lakes has got to be one of the best areas to live in Dubai - if you're looking for a nice, quiet family neighborhood. SZR is 5 mins away. Great to get to schools as well, walking/bicycling distance to DIA and Regent and a short drive to many other schools including DAA and ASD. The green spaces are lovely, I love how the birds create a racket in my garden, there are 8 or so communal pools, 1 for each mini-community and you're welcome to use the pool of another community if you're bored of your own. There will be a pool, park and playground within a couple of minutes walk, wherever you may live in the Lakes. Common barbecue areas which are great during the winter months. A Choithram within walking/biking distance for groceries, Mall of Emirates and Ibn Batuta, a 15 min drive away. There are bicycling paths and walkways. A Hayya Club for your gymming needs, even a restaurant by the big pool. There is also a football field, tennis courts, basketball courts, children's nursery - all within the Lakes. And of course there are around 5-6 lakes, dotting the Lakes. You will find independent as well as attached housing here - maybe a bit more expensive than the Springs/Meadows though (The attached ones go for around 170k - 190k) We love living here.

I boil some water with a few bay leaves, a couple of cinnamon sticks, large onion and a few cloves of garlic. Add chicken to the boiling water and cook. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can use the broth as a soup by shredding some chicken meat into it or as stock.

Just my personal experience - when I used the supermarket liquid food colours to colour the fondant, I was up half the night trying to achieve the right balance by adding more and then more and then some more sugar as the liquid made the sugarpaste too sticky.. In the end, not worth the hassle and the headache and the time spent... In my hard-earned experience, the gel food colours make colouring fondant a cinch..

Yes but if you are considering a Sep 2011 admission for KG1, I'm afraid most good schools would be full..

Remember fondant is only sugarpaste so the more liquid you add, the stickier it becomes and more difficult to work with. As it is, the liquid food colouring found in supermarkets is a no-no when colouring fondant. Instead you must use gel food colouring (you can find this at Tavola's stores - Wilton brand). A dab of gel colour goes a long way.. Just apply colour to the fondant with a toothpick head and knead to evenly spread the colour - 2 or 3 such applications should leave you with a very nice and bright coloured fondant ball. As for flavoring - I have never flavored my fondant, but I suspect if it is liquid flavoring, the same rules would apply. So search for a dry flavoring like the vanilla flavor powder found in supermarkets for flavored fondants..

I have a Panasonic Convection Microwave and find that I rarely use the convection feature...I use the oven in my cooker and that works for me. Though if you have an all gas cooking-range AND a gas oven, you may want to consider the electric convection feature in a microwave, as the gas ovens here usually end up burning most things that you cook in it... However, my microwave is only used to heat food.. I have a steamer as well and that too remains locked up in the store...rarely used... If I need to steam anything, its simpler to do it in the microwave, or on the cooker.. As to what else might be useful, I find living without my food-processor cum blender would well-nigh be impossible..and if you don't have a maid you may consider a dish-washer as well...

What would all of you have to say about our maids, who all have had to leave their kids behind (mine has 3 under the age of 10) under someone else's care?

We went through the assessment last year. I don't really know how many children were being assessed and for how many number of places. What I do know is that the child that went in with DS, didn't make it. Although to be fair he was 6 months younger than DS and 2 and half, in my opinion, is a little too young to be asked about matching shapes and colours, counting, nursery rhymes etc.. And the poor mite kept crying (as he was in unfamiliar surroundings) and really had no hope of making it. Luckily DS was in a good mood that day and decided he didn't need to be scared of the strange person asking him all those questions and was able to count and match shapes and colours and recite some nursery rhymes etc. HTH

We live in the Lakes and think its one of the best family areas to live in Dubai. Every community of villas has its own common area with pool, park, basketball court, children's play area, sand pit and barbecue pit. All the kids are out in the evening, biking, scooting, playing and its such a great atmosphere.

Our Lakes DEWA bills for a 3 bed+maid+study ranged from 800 to 1400 this past year (not including housing fee).
