The positions you are looking for are very limited and the competition will be fierce, but not limited to locals only. I think you have to broaden what you are looking for if you do need to work and then keep looking for the positions you really want, once you are employed.

Prices been going down slightly in most places. I also heard on the property show that most buyers wants to buy in newer developments.

No you don't have to invite every child in the compound. An 8 year old would mostly not like to be part of a 3 year olds party anyway, so don't think you will offend anyone.

I don't think the Emiritaizason is a threat to the general overseas workforce. Their population is too small to take up that many vacancies. I do see more Emirates even in customer service role which must be a good move for the country, to be out there and seen.

Arabian Expedition is good if you are going for the dune bashing, they are driving close to the Hajer mountains and the dunes are huge. Arabian Adventure is good, but very crowded and I believe they only pick up from hotels. Arabian Nights are also good and pick up anywhere.

Lucky for us we didn't purchase tickets. Firstly I thought it was expensive and secondly I thought the timing of the year wasn't good, it's still too hot to be out in the middle of the day in swimwea, without hardly any shade. Very sad for the families that was looking forward to this event, especially the one that came all the way from Oman.

I love the idea of development work but not sure I'd send my children to an underdeveloped region with no communication (which along with it comes no modern healthcare, no quick transport out in case of sickness/an emergency) without me! School trips have to be extremely predictable and secure for people to entrust their children to them. That being said, I don't think any self-respecting school would suggest Orlando as a worthwhile field trip! At the private school I attended in America, that would never have been an option -- we had 2-week camping trips, a Europe trip (that was closely tied to our western civilization course studies), a few trips to space centers (day trips!), and a California history tour up Hwy 1. Everything was tied to learning and benefit, certainly not pure amusement.. I sadly agree, I know a family that lost a child on a holiday in an underdeveloped country and I can't help to think it could have been prevented if there were better health care where they were staying.

I have a friend that was relocating back to England 6 month ago, as the rents where too high, tired of no seasons, no greenery and the list went on. Guess what? They are now back after a miserable English summer and generally realised the grass wasn't greener and prices are high everywhere.

International City used to have a reputation of being a bit rough, it's certainly not Downtown or the Marina. It's a safeish area, not sure if I would like to stroll there alone in the evening. If your company has staff accommodation there, at least you might live in the same building as colleagues. Dubizzle is good, but some people advertising flat sharing aren't serious. I would wait until you are here and start to know people. Join Facebook groups, many find flat mates that way too.

Victory Heights and Arabian Ranches are great family oriented communities. Other nice ones that would probably be closer for your husband are the Meadows and Jumeirah Park, they would give you a nice villa within good communities. You could try some of the newer developments in Jumeirah, but we felt Jumeirah lacked community feel, but it might depend on where you live. The Villa (that's the community name )could probably also work and it would be easy travel for your husband. The villas and the community is nice, but it doesn't have many shops and restaurants, I think they have a grocery store and café. There might be something more.

Ridiculous - that isn't an educational trip should be a family holiday. Something I've been meaning to post for a whike a friend of mine was working for a profit making school and was asked to organise a local(ish) trip and was told when itemising costings to ensure there was a profit built in / food for thought!! A profit making school wants to make a profit out of a school trip, does 7 days know about it ?? You might be surprised to learn that the profit making schools make a profit out of your child every minute of the day they are inside the school building, even on charity days!

I don't agree with posts that this trip doesn't sound educational. The fact that they are going to the US is an education in itself (sure there will be some snobs that don't think the US got any culture, especially in the areas that are mentioned). Their is probably more educational elements in the trip that isn't mentioned and will be discussed during the trip. Visit to a theme park why not, saves us money to not have to go on our family holiday and pay for two adults that isn't overly interested. We had fun trips in school as well when I was growing up, but not as far away. Personally I think it's important to see as many countries as you can and that itself is an education. We don't have enough holiday days and money to take our children all over the world, so I am happy the schools offer overseas travelling. It's not compulsory either.

Hi, usually they charge 2% buyer commission and 2% seller commission. I am working for the German Real Estate Company Engel & Voelkers. specialized also in selling/buying properties. So if you need any help please contact me. Since when do the seller pay commission? It's new to me that's all and do all agencies charge seller commission?

They are both nice schools. The Springs is a better area to live than Sports City, more parks lakes etc and you are not far from some bigger malls, the Marina and the beach. That's what I would go for. It's a more mature area with less construction as well. Driving here is quite horrific, so good you are choosing areas to live that are close to school. Good luck with your move. Do you really think the Springs is better than sports city? The houses are quite old and the lakes just breed mosquitos! Plus, so much traffic in the springs! But there is that new Dubai British Foundation school in the springs which might work for her as well ... Sport City is only apartments in sand without much around it. I have a lot of friends in the Springs area and they all love living there. The villas aren't amazing, but the community is very child family friendly. The location I personally find better too. I also like that there are more options for dining out, but of course that's only my opinion :-).

I agree with everything you say, but surely you must have noticed that before you moved. Tecom has always been like that. It's a bit like moving to International City and complain it's a dump after you moved in. To be fair nothing wrong to work for improvement.

I was visiting a friend last week in one of the housing areas and at least one third of the houses were empty. Possibly more. And it should be a very popular area, near to the Springs/Meadows but it was completely empty! It's because those houses aren't handed over yet, I think you are talking about the extension of Jumeirah Park that overlaps the Springs. No. My friend lives in one already - they've been handed over for a while - but she is the only one on her street! Ok the landlords probably try to get the rent they want then ? And even though they might be handed over in Dubai doesn't necessary mean they are ready to live in, I know from experience....

I have the same girl every time for both cut and colour. Simple fact is they know that I always book with her and I wouldn't use anyone else. And yes it is Holly. GE, Both times I booked Holly, She introduced me to a new girl, sayin she will do the job. . I have nothing against her or yo... it's jsut that I am extremely unhappy and felt humiliated the way I was treated both these times. Dubai has too much competition, there should be no place for bad customer service. When I booked with Holly she was busy with the owners friend, no one even had the decency to explain that she couldn't do me; that was the icing on the cake and I decided it was my last time in that salon. If things like that happens normal salons would at least phone before hand and ask if it's ok. When I have been driving there I am hardly going to go if she can't do my hair today, I come back another time when she isn't busy. Yes definitely felt like a second class citizen in that place and it isn't even a posh salon, looks like any suburban salon!

LOL I know - I sound like a fruit loop. But I have realized over the years that the best advances often happening after the bottom has been hit. At the moment people are in water well above their head and struggling to find air to get back to the top of the rough sea. If they just let themselves float down they'll find that they may not be on the high sea anymore, but they are in calmer waters and don't have to fight for survival. One step back to take one step forward on a more secure path. But the thing is that many people do still think they are in day dream Dubai. They still think they are a high class of people, living in the land of gold streets, and they are drowning in debt to maintain that facade to both the public and themselves. There ARE people here on good money, just as there are people in the west on good money. But peopleon average money have long tried to live the life of those on good money because that once was possible - and to have a huge savings left at the end of the month after dong it. I think Dubai will become real. There will still be uber rich people who are wow but gone will be the days of people being scoffed at for not living the brunch lifestyle, and in will be the days of people living nice, reasonable lives again. I don't think there will ever be a true long term 'low to middle class' workforce. si,ply because this is an expat place, not a home, but the bs will start to get cut out for many people. Locals have changed a lot over the past 2 decades - I have spoken to so many and have been truly wowed at how switched on they are and how international they are in their mentality (I don't mean international as in "evolution" of things such as Ramadan, I mean international as in their demeanor is very learned), I see good things on the way though. But anything can change tomorrow. We can't predict the future, especially these days. But i am hoping. You seem to forget a teeny tiny detail.. The reason why most people come here is because they're able to save money. Now that this has become impossible for many, they simply leave. It's better to live in your own home country when you have to live from paycheck to paycheck than to be an expat in a foreign country. I want to say this is absolutely right... but I can't anymore. I believe that [i'>was[/i'> the case but today many are not saving anything at all anymore but at least they have an income at all here and they have already set up a life here, whereas to go home is to start all over again and they don't want to do that. But the new wave of expats is a good thing. They are coming in happy on deals and hopefully having done their budgeting before arriving so they won't be arriving here unhappily. (And they are making their budgets before meeting the old school snobbery that exists - you know 'villa vs apartment' '4WD vs budget car' etc. (and the only reason I know about half of these snobberies is from reading about them on here.) I would definitely not stay if we didn't save. There is a younger child free generation here now from Europe, that didn't really exist 10 years ago working in clubs, restaurants etc that have a couple of years in Dubai partying and enjoy the beach in the winter and probably don't save. Those kind of jobs went to Asians before, but I noticed the new trendy places like to employ westerners. The newer expensive schools are mostly filling up with newcomers, so there must be companies offering good deals, but I am uncertain in which fields.

I have only used Essential from your list and had decent result, my biggest problem was the customer service. Twice when I booked, I got a different girl than I booked. I didn't want to make a fuss, as I felt it would be rude to the hairdresser that I was given. And both times the stylist I booked was busy anyway. Once it was with the owners friend and the owner made such a fuss over her and not speaking to other clients. The owner/manager gives a bad vibe when she's in the salon, might be a reason for the high staff turnover.

I had the opposite, last weekend we were going out for dinner, both the Ribroom in Zabeel Saray and Hunters in the Westin were fully booked until 9 pm. We always go out early and managed to get a table at the Porterhouse in the Sofitel in the end. It wasn't full there, but busy. The bar was packed. And I was making the reservation a two days in advance. The shops in the malls are just too expensive, people do shop and ship or like me shop on holidays, almost anywhere is cheaper than the Dubai shops. Rental prices has been going down slightly. This is maybe a weird comment, but there are a lot more cheaper cars on the roads like Kia and Hyundai, while before you saw more Prados or Volvo for families.

I would go for the meeting with an open attitude. The school might very well want to resolve the issue and listen to you how to deal with your child in the best way. Personally I wouldn't put my child in a school with 25 children in the younger years. I think that's way too many students for a teacher and a shared teacher assistant. I didn't get what school your child is in, seems like it's been edited. And also in defence to the teacher, if the class is that big and there might be one or two that needs that little extra most of the time, it's really hard, especially with only a shared assistance. Of course if it's true that your child has been hit, that's unacceptable.

Its not as good as a US or European outlet centre. I go sometimes for children's sportswear, like Nike, Adidas and Puma. You can be lucky sometimes, but often the stock is really old or just not reduced enough, so rather wait for sales in the regular malls.

I am shocked your paediatrician told you to dilute the formula, it might be fine in bigger babies when they started with solid. I think you have to find an excellent paediatrician here in Dubai to help you. It was a long time I used one here and none of them was nothing to rave about, hopefully you can find some good recent recommendations.

hello ladies, are there any good suggestions for a hair cut salon (preferably near DIFC :D ) This is my first try in dxb.. any good, not so very expensive salon recommendations please:) If you dont mind driving to Jumeirah then Soni and Vicky @ Cut Above are good hairdressers. Wet cut costs around 180 Dhs with them. Essential Salon near Park n Shop also used to have good hairdresser & same charges. sLaM has good hairdresser but its over rated. I will never pay more than 200 Dhs for a haircut. There are plenty of salons charging under 200 Dhs and doing a great job. I have been to both cut above and Essential and they were both close to 300 dhs for a cut and blowdry, Essential was 295 dhs to be precise. Cut above I think I paid 250 dhs. Are you having cut without blowdry? Yes silvstet, I normally go for cut only without blow dry. I find it useless to get it blow dried as I like to see movements and layers without blowdrying. A good cut should look good without Any extra effort. I specifically mentioned wet cut because many salons don't offer "wet cut only" , instead They offer Cut+Blow dry.... That comes to around 300+ Dhs Sorry for not making it clear. ? Thanks, I didn't know what a wet cut was thought you meant they cut your hair while its still wet, which is normal ? I never dare to ask for a haircut without blowdry, always imagine they will look at me as I am cheap ? Funnily enough when I am having colour I always tell the I don't want a blowdry, as they need to blowdry the hair anyway to see if it's good!

Have you thought about putting him in a British school but in the year below, so year 5 rather than 6 ? No, I wouldn't do it unless he has difficulties in school. The names of the year in the American and British school can't be translated to that the American school is a year behind. It's different education systems and they teach very similar things to what is appropriate for the age group. From what I understand the Australian school is of good standards and it definitely doesn't mean he has missed years, if so he would have to start at foundation in the British or KG at the American, for sure he will not have learned exactly the same things where he is now. We had a real struggle transferring our children from an American school to a British school, because of this issue. And they were perfectly fine, even doing really well at their age groups in the British system.

Have you looked at Jumeirah Park? It is adjacent to Jumeirah Island and the villas are newer and also really nice, but not really as grand as the Jumeirah Island villas, but definitely similar or even better standard than the Meadows. Jumeirah Park also have a good sized community centre. The prices are better value as well.

Kite Beach isn't free to park :-( It used to be AED20 for the day now it has shot up to AED50 and if you don't get there early ( before 11am) there is a huge queue to get in Some of the streets around Jumeriah don't have paid parking  You can park where they have the machines along the beach or at Jumeirah Beach road and walk down. Hi ladies, I am looking for a hotel not far from Media city. Last time we stayed at Media Rotana and it only had a big swimming pool and an empty playroom! I have 2 little ones (a very active 20 month old and a 4 month old) and I think that we will be staying in at least until 3 so need to keep them busy before that. Thank you in advance The hotels around Media City aren't really family hotels. Most of the beach resorts would have kids clubs, but they are also a lot higher priced. Gloria hotel at Tecom I think has bigger indoor play areas.
